  • There are many different versions of the Boeing 747 and each airline is able to change the platform to best suit its needs. But, believe it or not, designs flying today are very conservative compared to the versions of the 747 that never saw the light of day. Let’s explore the world of ‘could-have-been’ 747s.

    747 trijet would have been awesome! If they had developed this version back in the 1970s the future versions of larger variants like the 747-400 might also have been developed as trijets with larger engines for fuel efficiency.

    I think the versions that stretched the upper deck would have made the 747 less viable of an aircraft for Boeing to manufacture, as the upper deck would not be super useful for carrying cargo. The reason why it even has an upper deck is because it was designed as a freighter.

    Double Decker variants are my favorite. Years ago, I read in ENR Magazine about them, and I thought, "INCREDIBLE." New strips, gates, terminals, etc. would also have to be outfitted. $$$$$. I'm obsessed with these planes in particular. As a kid, my brother would drive us to IAH (Houston), and we would, at night, watch the 747s take off and land at the end of the runway ( of course outside the boundaries). He got his private pilot's license eventually. I never did (out of fear). I TRULY appreciate those who do pilot. INCREDIBLE men and women.

Also, they’re also interesting coz they have their quirks and features like a spiral staircase found in -100,-200 & SP,ladder thing and nose door found in the freighter variant, and an elevator that are probably found in all 747 generations*).

    My favourite is the 747-8, although I've never ridden any 747 since Jan '89; my fifth 747. That was a fluke, being a short flight from Detroit to Denver. All were 200's except the 1st one I rode in Dec. '77 which was a 747-100. Since then I've been on the 777-300 in 2014 and in October I rode the 787's shortest variant from Vancouver to Frankfurt and it's middle length variant 2 weeks later in early November going and coming back (From Vancouver to England and back 2 weeks later.)

Beauty, grace, efficiency and success. Those were the days when Boeing could make all your dreams come true.

    • @Ampersandrascott
      @Ampersandrascott 4 года назад +2

      Vieux Bal I have a kind of love-hate relationship with the 747-400. My design group had to figure out how to get those damn winglets on that airplane and still maintain guaranteed Interchangeability. That means that you should be able to install any winglet from any -400 onto any other -400 without having to modify parts or hole patterns. The blended contours on the wingtip made it really tough. We did it, but it wasn’t easy. Not then, anyway. We used hard gaging back then because all the neat digital stuff you have today didn’t exist.
      Don’t get me wrong. The
      -400 is a great airplane, but I think the -8i is proportionally much nicer looking. And, of course, the systems updates are a quantum leap over the -400. Plus, we added a RAT to make it safer (a HUGE RAT!).

    We aren't sure if the 747 program is done with yet. The 747-8i is still finishing production. Or at least to my knowledge. We don't know if a new "747-LG4, 747-LG5, or 747-LG6" LG stands for Last Generation as large aircraft demand for aircraft of its scale drop. It's just a 747 designed to finish the bi-level aircraft lineup.

    My favorite variant would be the size of the 747SP with only 2 engines instead of 4. With 2 new powerful engines and all the advantages and techinques used in 787 & 777X this would a variant that could keep the Queen of the Skies flying until the end of the century.

    JAL wanted a Fixed Landing Gear version of the 747.
    Boeing considered it. As JAL was a good customer. But any other use of it, resale, or cancellation of orders. Was a leap not worth taking.

    I mean, surely with modern engines like the GE9X they could create a twin-engine version, or a conversion kit for existing 747's. They came out in the 60's, engine's have to be twice as powerful by now, for airlines that already operate the 747 they should be able to opt to have them re-engined where they lose engines 1 & 4 and replace 2 & 3 with something more modern.

      Like the Airbus A380, the Boeing B747 only has a few more planes on order. Both of them were killed by the move from airlines using a hub and spoke concept to more of a point to point concept, and with twin engine jets getting the range needed to cover those routes.
      It's possible that eventually there will be new aircraft with the capacity of the B747 or A380, but they likely would be twin engine planes.

    As of February 2019, the 747 has been involved in 162 aviation accidents and incidents,[226] including 63 accidents and hull losses[227] which resulted in 3746 fatalities.[15] The last crash was Turkish Airlines Flight 6491 in January 2017.[15] There have been several hijackings of Boeing 747s, such as Pan Am Flight 73 where a Boeing 747-121 was hijacked by four terrorists and resulted in 20 deaths.[228]
    Few crashes have been attributed to design flaws of the 747. The Tenerife airport disaster resulted from pilot error and communications failure, while the Japan Airlines Flight 123 and China Airlines Flight 611 crashes stemmed from improper aircraft repair. United Airlines Flight 811, which suffered an explosive decompression mid-flight on February 24, 1989, led the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to issue a recommendation that the Boeing 747-100 and 747-200 cargo doors similar to those on the Flight 811 aircraft be modified to those featured on the Boeing 747-400. Korean Air Lines Flight 007 was shot down by a Soviet fighter aircraft in 1983 after it had strayed into Soviet territory, causing U.S. President Ronald Reagan to authorize the then-strictly military global positioning system (GPS) for civilian use.[229]
    Accidents due to design deficiencies included TWA Flight 800, where a 747-100 exploded in mid-air on July 17, 1996, probably due to sparking electricity wires inside the fuel tank;[230] this finding led the FAA to propose a rule requiring installation of an inerting system in the center fuel tank of most large aircraft that was adopted in July 2008, after years of research into solutions. At the time, the new safety system was expected to cost US$100,000 to $450,000 per aircraft and weigh approximately 200 pounds (91 kg).[231] El Al Flight 1862 crashed after the fuse pins for an engine broke off shortly after take-off due to metal fatigue. Instead of dropping away from the wing, the engine knocked off the adjacent engine and damaged the wing.[232] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_747

    They should have used a trijet design on the tail and kept the 4 engines up front so they would have 7 engines. You can never have too much redundancy for safety.

    Boeing would have made a huge impact if they used 2 ducted fan electric engines along with 2 GEnx on the 747-8 passenger version

  • @DKStuntz1
    @DKStuntz1 4 года назад +1

    Aside from the complexity factor, would a 747 Trijet really be more fuel-efficient than a 4-engine 747? Of course, a 747 Trijet would use 25% less fuel than a 4-engine 747, but it seems to me that it would also have 25% less power, and thus a lower carrying capacity. With just 3 engines, could it really be any larger than the DC-10 or L-1011, and still be able to fly well?

    • @HesJustSteven
      @HesJustSteven 4 года назад

      I highly doubt it would fly well, just from looking at it, it was gonna be too heavy, I would've needed engines more powerful than the JT9D and it would not be able to carry as many passengers and if it did, its range would've been abysmal unless most of the cargo hold was fuel tanks. It probably would've been a slow gas guzzler.
