Starting out with clips of the "Moro Castle" fire, this black and white mystery movie moves fast with murder, attempted murder and continues with suspense until Karloff solves it and the detective almost eats his hat. Great movie. Thanks for the post. Joe S

This movie with Boris is great movie. I love Boris Karlof. These are great black and white movies.. I love them. Thank you Timel are as Classic Movies. Great job.
Note @ 2:21... the attorney, Victor Martin, is the actor Henry Brandon. Damn good actor!! He went on to play 'Scar' in the great John Wayne film, 'The Seachers'. In real life, he was an inch taller than Wayne, but the Duke towered over him in the 'The Seachers'.
I have been watching these Timeless Classic Movies along with many Charlie Chan Movies, ... It;s quite bewildering why the producer and director did not invest in a few pairs of hand cuffs ... I am glad I found these great movies. ... very entertaining
Insurance rep. in 1st scene is Tris Coffin who plays a hotel clerk in the Wong film The Fatal Hour. Coffin has a great part as the "good" Dr. in The Corpse Vanishes w/Bela Lugosi. Coffin, whose name suggests death, co-starred with Lugosi & Karloff who played iconic death-related figures Dracula & Frankenstein's Monster, respectively.
Why isn't anyone talking about the handsome William Stelling??? He is so sharp-looking he could be a modern day actor even in this ancient movie. I'm looking up his other movies to watch as well!...

The lawyer was clearly not doing his best to help the accused, but other than that, I didn't see any clues showing who did it, or why. Even the ending failed to explain what the motive was.
I'm the opposite. With the exception of Cool Hand Luke, I don't watch black and white. The people act so bad that it's hard to believe anyone ever talked like that.
The "Wentworth Castle" shown in the opening is actually footage of the SS Morro Castle, which burned in 1934, in one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century.
@Righteous Indignation. The similarities between the events are notable: both liners were destroyed by fire with terrible loss of life; both captains were non-factors during the disasters (Morro's captain died mysteriously the day before that ship's fatal fire, and the Yarmouth's captain was among the first to leave his burning ship); both ships had large amounts of wood in the decks and structures and many layers of flammable oil-based paint, which fueled the flames; fire drills and other emergency drills were non-existent in each case; emergency alarms and S.O.S. signals were not effectively initiated to alert passengers and seek assistance (although for different reasons); the employment and effective use of emergency equipment and lifeboats were minimal and, of course, both ships' names included "Castle." The lessons learned after the Morro Castle debacle led to safety improvements in the design, operation and emergency procedures of U.S.-flagged liners, but the foreign-flagged Yarmouth Castle did not benefit from those improvements. Otherwise, the Yarmouth Castle fire/sinking might never have occurred.
@Timeless_Classic_Movie - another wonderful who-dunnit with some laughs thrown in! I have been watching a LOT of these old b&w movies lately (nothing much else to do) and it seems to me that I saw another movie about the "Wentworth Castle" ship disaster, but I can't recall the name? But heck, at my age, remembering to put on my underwear is quite an accomplishment...
Trivia -- the lawyer in this film Victor Martin is a young Henry Brandon. Henry is famous for three roles: he was the decrepit old man Barnaby in the Laurel & Hardy classic "The March of the Wooden Soldiers." He was also the opera goon who told the Little Rascals' Alfalfa that he "signed the contract" and had to sing "The Barber of Seville." And he portrayed the evil Native American Scar who butted heads with John Wayne -- when Wayne was looking for his niece in the western classic "The Searchers." Brandon deserved to be a far bigger star.
Great Movie, dialogue acting etc. But, can someone explain what happened? I need an executive one paragraph plot summary, written for someone who watched the movie but doesn't get the motivations, etc. I'm assuming it could be argued there was a commercial decision to make it complicated, so people would have to pay to see it again! Or, perehaps it is just me? I don't see any other comments along this line. God's Love, Movies 'B'!
Karloff as an Asian?! That’s guy bizarre! English accent and all too. But I’ll watch anything with him in it, one of my all time favorite actors and people. He was truly an interesting man and never of kind. Wish we still had him with us.
The film uses actual news footage from the burning of the liner SS Morro Castle, which caught fire on September 8, 1934 during a trip from Havana to New York.
I've watched a few of these Mr Wong movies and as interesting as they be it's very hard to take the Withers character. His portrayal as the detective is very annoying. He's too overbearing, he never thinks before coming to conclusions and he never takes his hat off.
What ever happened to the money from the Titanic which wasn't even the Titanic? There is no statute of limitations on murder. Lawyers get all over this.
That is very correct in the opening scenes a ship was on fire with a lot of un-breathable smoke! Inhaling smoke on a seagoing vessel, the smoke will kill you first. From the lack of oxygen.
And along with the (not homicidal) Dr. from The Corpse Vanishes in the 1st office scene, isn't that Toby as one of the news hawkers, also from The Corpse Vanishes? I believe so. Any other connection between these two films, aside from each starring a well-known horror actor?
ah, so. Henry Brandon also played Foo Manchu in a movie serial. This movie should be remade with George Clooney as Mr. Wong. I love it when Richard Loo says, "I go to your universary, U.C.R.A.)
One tires of the 'Dopey Sidekick' that gets written into most of these old B movies. Seriously dopey, enough to make me sure the girl reporter wouldn't be able to tie her own shoes, let alone drive a car.
Watched this movie...it seems to me that the ONLY indication that Boris is Chinese is his last name is WONG. He has a British accent. Hong Kong was a colony of Britain. Possibly his father was Chinese and mother British. People look at these old movies through a lens of POLICITAL correctness missing the value of the work of the movie and then waxing philosophical about the woes of Old Hollywood. FYI-----Today non-gay people play gay characters, non meth-heads play meth-heads, Russell Crowe (a New Zealander) played a Roman. It's called ACTING!!!
The average American doesn’t know the difference between Chinese and Japanese cultures any more than Marjorie Williams did in this movie. She responded to the allegation that the Chinese man committed suicide by saying “it makes sense, they commit _hari hari_ “ ...meaning the _Japanese Samuri_ tradition of Hara Kiri.
Marjorie Reynolds also had an uncredited role in “Gone With The Wind”. I think she was one of the guests at the barbecue at Twelve Oaks in the beginning of the movie.
hard to cover up a change in actors but it was done in the part where Mr. Wong takes to to Chinese man. Look close and you will see the Chinese man has grow very old in just a few seconds. This is a Bloppy of the 40's.
Remember Hong Kong was a British colony for many years, with many British citizens living, and marrying people from Hong Kong. It is possible those who learned to speak English from British citizens did learn the language as spoken by the British.
