Wrong! A teaching license (certificate) is NOT issued by the US government, it is issued by the state dept of education where you apply to teach, and only after you have completed ALL requirements (Praxis exams). Some states do not require Praxis exams, but do have other tests, and standards vary from state to state...Florida is easier than NY, etc.
When I said that the teaching license is issued by the US government I meant that it's issued by a state department of education as opposed to CELTA/TEFL/TESOL which are issued by privately owned companies. I hope this clarification helps.
It should also be clarified that toefl, tesol, esl, celta certificates can not be used to teach esl in American public schools. Some people have the impression that it's possible. However, it is possible to use these certs to teach in SOME countries' public schools, of course not all.
I am Malawian citizen and a primary professional teacher with a certificate, I would like to have an international teaching qualification. Is it possible to enroll in this program though not intending to live in U.S? Will I be able to be awarded the certificate still?
I would be grateful if u address my question....Is it possible to obtain it here from india, fyi I'm currently planning on doing the celta course...if possible, where should/can i apply for the US License??

Hello Richard, that's a very good point. I believe there's a specific teaching license with a concentration in teaching ESL/EFL.
