Hi. I'm a non native speaker from Brazil. I have some teaching experience and I'm looking for a certificate to make it easier for me to get an online job either in Brazil or in another country. Do you think I need other certifications such as TOEIC or TOEFL? Is a cheap TEFL certification enough in this case?
TOEIC and TOEFL will prove your English level. You’ll also need at least a 120 hour TEFL certificate to teach online. If you wonky want to work online then the cheaper TEFL should be enough. I have a video coming out soon on teaching online for non-native speakers which will have some extra tips!

Excellent Video... You are an Angel... most of these videos are confusing. I am 67 years old and able to go anywhere, after 2022. I do not have a Bachelor's Degree in English... but I am a Licenced Teacher here in the US. Over 4 years of experience with teaching at Colleges also. I would love to teach English in Italy. I did not see Italy on your list (sad). I also Teach Drama for Acting for Stage and Film. I also am a NLP (Neuro Linguistic Program) Hypnotist. Would I be able to teach in Italy with the TEFL online certification? And... I was told I needed to be able to talk Italian if I want to teach in Italy, which I think is smart to know both languages. Thank you for your help.
Teaching in Italy can be tricky unless you have EU working rights. The easiest way to get around this is to go on a student visa and teach English part-time on the side. With a US teaching license you may be able to find a job at an international school in Italy teaching in your subject area. You can apply for these jobs through recruitment agencies like Search Associates or International School Services. However, these schools may have age restrictions due to the visa.

@@ESLTeacher365 yeah, and there's financial aid available as well, you'd still need to pay 50 dollars to get the certificate mailed to u, but it's cool, peer reviewed assignments and micro lessons where u have to submit recorded vids of u teaching... pretty cool

CELTA is more equivalent to a bachelor’s than a master’s. DELTA is the master’s equivalent. It really depends on where you want to teach. Which countries are you interested in? For non-native speakers it’s always best to be as qualified as you can since some countries, schools and employers prefer native speakers (which is unfortunate and discrimination 😔)
Hi Jamie, Thank you for this video!! Can you please help me? I have master's level education in the sciences and have some teaching experience with children and university students. I've debated going with ITA, but after seeing your video maybe I dont need something so exhaustive. I would be so grateful if you could give me some insight, I am hoping to get a certification before I apply for jet in fall 2025 while also going to full time university (so I need a more flexible certification process if possible if you know of one).
Can i teach english as a non-native speaker if i know almost no grammar? I'm pretty fluent in speech and writing, but it's all instinctual and subconscious. When someone asks me why is something the way it is in english all i can say is "it's just is". Would these courses help me bridge that gap or are they more for people who just need to brush up on their already existing understanding of the language?
You absolutely need to know grammar to teach English. If you do a TEFL course it won’t teach you the grammar, it will teach you how to teach grammar. I recommend brushing up on English grammar first. There are lots of helpful books!

Yes, CELTA is one of the most expensive courses. However, they don't offer job search assistance. So I personally recommend ITA over CELTA if you are looking for job search help.

If you don’t have teaching experience I recommend CELTA or International TEFL Academy (link is in the description). The difference is that CELTA is more for teaching adults and ITA offers lifetime job search assistance but CELTA does not. I recommend starting with ITA and if you feel like you want more later on, you can always do a CELTA.
Hi Jaimie . I have completed my Mba and passed IELTS test with the hope of doing a course abroad. But unfortunately it did not work out. So I have been training students for IELTS for the past 4 years. As a change of mind, I’m looking for a english course and ended up watching your vedio and it was worthy. Can you suggest whther TESOL OR TESL is best for teaching in English speaking countries??
Hi! TEFL/TESOL/TESL are all the same thing. Different countries use different acronyms. I am currently teaching in Australia using my CELTA certificate. This is the Cambridge brand TEFL certificate. Each country has different regulations to get a visa to teach there so I recommend choosing your top 5 countries and researching the requirements. Jobs can be competitive in English speaking countries so it’s helpful to have an actual teaching certificate as well as a TEFL. I hope this helps!
Hello! I have a teaching license with a clde endorsement (cultural/linguistic diverse education) does this have any standing for teaching english abroad or would you recommend getting certified in one of the options you mentioned?
I still recommend getting a TEFL if you want to teach ESL because you’ll want to learn the methods to teaching English as a Foreign Language. For interviews you may be asked to teach a demo lesson, so it’s best to be well prepared.

In your knowledge or understanding, how is Trinity CertTESOL? I don't want to teach young learners at all. Is TEFL mostly about teaching young learners? Will it be worth every penny if I go for Trinity CertTESOL? Please guide if you can!
CertTESOL is the Trinity brand TEFL. I haven’t taken it but I did take CELTA and they are similar. They are very good courses for teaching adults. It depends on how you want to use it. It’s usually for new teachers or a top up for experienced teachers. There’s also more advanced courses like DELTA.

I have a 10 years of teaching experience, so I think the MID-LEVEL TEFL would do. I am looking to do mostly online teaching. What would be your recommendation specially on the one the Canadian employer would accept. Thank you.
Do you already have a visa to work there? It will depend where you are teaching - private academies, universities, etc. In general, you’ll want a quality TEFL with teaching practice like CELTA or CertTESOL.
@@ESLTeacher365 The visa is in the process, we have applied for the Canadian PR. I was thinking to apply for online teaching. It depends on your nationality, if you have a degree, where you want to teach and if you want to each adults or not. CELTA is great for the EU and Middle East for teaching adults. However, no job support is given. If you want a comparable course with job search assistance, I recommend ITA: bit.ly/ITATEFL

Yes I recommend level 5 courses if you don’t have previous teaching experience because they go more in-depth than the basic 120-hour courses. It’s best to do a course that has a teaching practicum so you can get feedback on your teaching.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to find a good institute for the TEFL certificate course and it is quite exhausting. Hopefully, you might suggest a prominent and trustable institute for the TEFL course online outside India.
I only recommend certificates where I have personally spoken with the company about their certificate. I haven’t spoken with TEFL International. You can find my recommendations in the description box.
DELTA is above CELTA. It’s usually if you want to be a director of studies (DOS) or a teacher trainer. You need at least 1 year of teaching experience before you do DELTA.
What if you just want to teach English in your own English speaking country? All these videos on RUclips seem to focus on teaching English abroad, but are there jobs in English speaking countries?
Each country is different, but typically if you want to teach English or ESL in your own country, you can become a certified teacher and get a teaching license and teach in public or private schools or get a TEFL and teach ESL classes at language schools. I teach in Australia at a language school and have students from all over the world.
It depends on the country. I have a video about teaching abroad without a degree. Each country has different visa restrictions and even some visas or requirements of specific schools will be more demanding than others.

Me too. I am brazilian living in USA for 12 years and moving to Portugal. Taught portuguese and English in school for 15 years but I would like to take Tefl course, I just don't know which one
I did not realize that people get both a TEFL and CELTA. I'm being told that having the money and time that I should get the CELTA. I'm 51, have 3 degrees and have done some teaching and substitute teaching.
CELTA is great for teaching adults, but not kids, so just keep that in mind. It also depends on where you want to teach. If you fill out my survey in the description I can better guide you.
Hi, how are you? My question is what tefl course have you taken? I mean the prices you've been explaining the whole video in order to get the certificate.
I personally did a CELTA.

@@ESLTeacher365
Age restriction? Due to the Visa? I'm not sure what you're saying (LOL) I'm too old, since I'm 67 years old? Yes? No?
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of this... WOW... I am so impressed how knowledgeable you are about all of this.
I'm still thinking about how you went 6 years without a TEFL... I would love to just go over there and be able to teach English and/or Acting/Drama... but I'm too scared to try that.
I Fear you're right that the schools would need me to do the TEFL which I totally respect that in this day and time.
So... what you're saying is:
(Try) the Student Visa ... How do I do that?
Thank you so much for all this valuable information.

But it is good to know that I can contact you when I'm stuck.
Thank you...
I know I can re-open my Acting Studio & NLP/Hypnosis office again and make a lot more money than what I'll make teaching abroad, but here in a few weeks... I am moving back to Albuquerque, New Mexico... and for once in my life (Retired) I do not have anything or anyone to tie me down (sad)...
I don't have a house, because I have been taking care of my mother for the last 7 years.
I need to buy a new car... new furniture etc... in other words... I'm FREE to Wander.
This would be the only good time to Teach abroad. Then I could come back to New Mexico and set down roots again later. Once I do settle down, I wouldn't have the money to travel. Because I know teaching abroad doesn't pay very much.
LOL. The money isn't the reason I'm doing this.

I am Spanish. I hace a BA in English philology and Master's in Teaching but to teach abroad are not válido I need Tefl or Celta, I was suggested to do celta since I have already experiencia ,but is like having two master's in Teaching

It depends on the country and school. Often you won’t need an additional certificate if you have a license in ELL.
You typically don’t need a TEFL on top of that.
