  • You can find my review of this line of paint from 6 years ago here: • Schmincke Akademie Wat...
If you like to grid out your pages like this check out my sketchbook stencils: shrsl.com/4fgfz
I have been pining for this sweet slim tin since I fist saw it. Schmincke has cute and unique tins. The regular price of this was scandalous considering that the paints are their student grade line but I kept my eyes open for a sale and I found one on Amazon: amzn.to/4beWfj6 at the time of posting it is still on sale with a 12% off coupon.
If you are interested in the flask palette I showed with the Professional Horadam paints you can find it on Amazon: amzn.to/3u1lWmE or Blick: shrsl.com/4eamo (for less than I paid!) no regrets.
    Pros:
    The unique tin!
    It was on sale
The paint selection is good and useful, I like it better than the colors in the other Schmincke Akademy tin I own
Pigment info and lightfastness info included
    Cons:
It's pricey for student-grade paint (but I knew that going in) and it's probably much cheaper in Europe,
    Bottom line:
I bought it for the tin. I will probably put the paint I prefer in it. It's probably not the best use of your watercolor dollars but I wanted it for my collection. I was weak but have no regrets!

not all artists are obsessed with buying new supplies every week. Some enjoy painting more than the buying aspect and buy the same thing when they run out instead of having 400 tins of watercolor.

I took the metal insert part out and used tack to hold the pans in next to one side, rather than having them down the center of tin and so made room for a water brush… Great video! Enjoy your product reviews so much!

I bought a Schmincke palette for the tin too, the "square" kind, but it also had their coolest palette choices ever (compliments and darks). Much more fun than their typical selection! I saw this one and thought it was adorable and should fit in a pencil case!

I collect palettes too and got this for the tin. Im going to take it with me on vacation in April and let my sisters try it out. Eventually ill replace the white and black with some artist grade Schmincke colors I got (test sets in some really beautiful colors) to make it more useful. You're a great influencer Lindsay but you've never steered me wrong. I love this tin. 👍🏻👍🏻

When I worked in advertising, I learned a trick for keeping pens. Get a good sized jar, like a pickle jar or something tall enough to fit the whole pen. Put about 1-2 inches of water in the bottom of the jar; place the pens in the jar, caps on but points down (have some ink in the pen); screw the lid on and store. We used to do this for Rapidographs and it kept them unclogged for a fairly long time. I assume you remember those and how temperamental they were, so it should work with fountain pens.

Hi Lindsay. This was so fun to watch. My hubby gifted me this set for Valentine but 6 of my pans are different: where you have white, Magenta, Cyane, Permanent Green, Yellow Ochre and Black - my Akademie tin got: Carmine, Indigo, Violet, May Green, Olive Green and Paynes Grey - just an observation, but still worth to share with you since I got on the feeling that you would like to be informed that apparently in Europe the content of the tin may be different. Awsome review!. First time ever for me to allready have the product you upload a review of.. lol... so this is a treat!.

    • @iwonanl
      @iwonanl 5 месяцев назад +3

That's strange. I live in Europe and was keeping an eye on this set because of the tin. The colors are exactly the same as in Lindsey set, original names in German as well; so white and black etc. I can see on the pictures and also listed in the description by the art shop that sells it.... So I would not say European set is different....

@judi not to enable your buying but this can be adjusted by tightening the clips, or by putting magnet tape on the bottom of the pans/tray. I remove my tray and put pans right on the bottom. I agree it's annoying when they move! But almost all tins do this.

Great review Lindsay! I'm not even finished at the start of writing this comment, but I'm thinking something I normally don't for most pan sets: Do I need this immediately, no, but I could see myself getting one as a travel/limited space set. I enjoy the color options--I already use PY151 and PR255 as cadmium alternatives when I want high luminosity, and I could very happily use the black or umber for a quick plein air value sketch (not that I've started that practice yet, lol). I might swap the convenience greens out, or one of them--I like the flexibility of blue + yellow, and I don't find it makes a huge time difference, so I'd add one or two stronger blues, but this ultramarine almost reads like a cobalt to me, which I prefer for skies. I also almost never prefer English/Venetian Red as a burnt sienna replacement, though I like it for certain results. Thanks for always dealing with me thinking out loud in your comment section, resulting in a paragraph, lol.

Hullo Lindsay, I have found the Academy paints from any company are simply not good enough to use in professional artworks! I was disappointed in college when the instructor insisted on student grade paints! I was a rather advanced student and after I showed up the first day with “non-class” approved supplies, I got a pass from the teacher. Now they did say if I was bringing my own selections I would be graded more severely than other students. I figured this class was an easy A, it was. I do enjoy watching your videos and seeing you create some wonderful art! Thank you for sharing Lindsay.

It’s so cute! I was lucky to get the set with horadam paints in it. Like you I’m addicted to these unusual palettes, but you could squeeze that box into the smallest space left in your suitcase when travelling…love it! I also find slim palettes really useful if working on a small desk, b y the time you’ve got your palette open there’s often not enough space for your paper or sketchbook! PS about the pan shape, as I understand it, Schmincke use a sweet manufacturer’s machine to wrap their pans so I think that dictated the slightly different profile. I always think they look like sweets when I open a new set!

I got the 12ct with blue white plastic says schmincke across it. It was kinda week, the flash were anyway the paint seemed to reset well but it was more opaque than the professional line but I noticed that fact made it easier to create a more even wash for skies and such. its not as shiny as van gogh. Which is nice. I just really liked how the big washes turned out. But id rather have more transparent reds for flowers.

This is a nice little tin! Great for travel! I'm a Schmincke fan, and would love the tin, but not at the price they are now. And FYI, for whatever reason, Holbein pro grade wc (do they even make a student grade?) use hues for a few of their colors.
like Viridian Hue, Cobalt Blue Hue, Vermillion Hue and maybe a few more? (they offer the regular non-hue in those colors too.) I guess it's gives customers a lower price option? Per usual: fun review!

I did find this interesting, I enjoy hearing your commentary even if I'm not going to buy anything because you know so much and you notice details I know nothing about which you explain very well (plus you give me some good ideas.) It's soothing just watching you paint and such in-between doing other things, but for some reason this video got super choppy on me halfway through. No other video on YT, I paused and played like three others from diff channels which were all fine, checked my internet which seemed fine, and I don't know what happened. Am I the only one? It was so choppy it became extremely distracting. 🤷‍♀😅😓

@@thefrugalcrafterYeah, I don't know if something random but weird happened with my browser suddenly (I use Firefox) if no one else has commented about it. I kept pausing to let it buffer, went back several minutes to replay, I tried refreshing the page, tried viewing lower video quality, tried other people's videos which didn't do that (and these weren't previous tabs either, I opened new tabs so they didn't have a cache.) I admittedly didn't try starting over from the beginning to see if the beginning suddenly got choppy or if it was just around the halfway point but it never got better after that so I gave up trying to fix it and finished the video that way. It was so wildly choppy that I can't believe no one else mentioned it so I guess I got unlucky and it was just something on my end. I never had this happen before so it confused me. 😅

@thefrugalcrafter Hay Lindsay, I remember you saying you were looking for a granulating yellow... I was playing around with one of my Rosa Gallery sets and wondering what I'm going to do with the Umber (it's in Every set!) It turns out it's considered a neutral yellow (?) Idk, it doesn't act much like a yellow when I mixed it with Blues... but I got a nice dirty granulating yellow when I mixed it with yellows. I got the most granulation mixing it with lemon, but it leaned green. I got a much nicer yellow from the cadmium deep and yellow ocher. I was swatching on the backside of Cellulose watercolor papers so I probably didn't get the best results. You have so much experience you probably already know this, but I thought I'd just say...

I bought this tin with Horodam artist grade paints in. It was just under £32 in the black friday sale at cass art in 2022. It sold out quickly, never to be seen again. Wish I had got more as artist grade half pans for about the same as a cotman half pans and a cute tin was a bargain! 😍 It had the usual suspects - split primary, couple of greens, earths, sepia and a black.

Thank you for a delightful review. Embarrassingly I am the owner of a set of Schmineke student watercolors purchased for the tin!!!! Right there with ya!
There are sooo many student watercolors. It is so confusing. I saw a video of yours a while back ranking your student grade paints. You had Art Whale number 1. Pretty Excellent 2. You had Van Gogh (my personal favorite) third from the bottom. Here Van Gogh was your first choice for student grade watercolor?
Have the formulations changed? Or have you changed your mind? Either way I’d love to see an updated “student watercolors comparison “. if the previous video is out of date
Thank you for all you do. Happy Summer

Buying paints just for the tin? Yup, been there and zero regrets, but mostly because my big purchase was the $35 GenCraft palette box. I love that box. The paints are fabulous as well, if you don't count the likely fugitive nature, or the fact that they re-wet so easily that layering glazes is kind of impossible. So yeah, I am all in with your enthusiastic tin collecting. :) Are you limiting your collections to the high end products with the cool-factor paints included? If not, have you tried those plain metal storage boxes yet? They're thin, and come in all kinds of sizes. The ones I bought (4.7"L x 7.1"W x 0.6"H) were 4/$14.00 and will hold 48 half pans. I can't remember if you mentioned it in this video or another one I recently watched, but you talked about using some Krylon appliance epoxy spray paint -- I think that will make my own set perfect.
Those new templates of yours are such a good idea -- I love that the "leftover" cutouts are in the package. So many great uses!
Shiny spots: My beloved Mission Gold paints will do the same. I adore these paints, but do not like the shiny. More/thinner layers seems to be the key -- I'll know more as I gain experience and control of my water.
Do you ever just use gouache for your white? I love having white on hand for the occasional use, but so far most of my watercolor whites are pretty useless.
Ox gall -- thanks for the tip about adding it to my water! I didn't know you could do that. I might even have some -- I was experimenting with giant bubble recipes awhile back -- I'll have to research if the stuff goes bad after awhile.
Sorry, long-winded as per usual. I've been binge-watching way too many of your videos in the last couple of days. What I really need is for you to come sit across from me at my table while I ply you with questions.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

I do use white gouache or the inktense antique white block or pan paint. It's super opaque and already dried down.

      @madhabitz 5 месяцев назад

@@thefrugalcrafter Ha! I was just re-watching the MissionGold 48 palette review and I've got the video paused with your hand holding the Ph.Martin's white bottle while you're explaining why Chinese white is included in this set and what it's real purpose is for. lol... cracked me up.
I haven't done the watercolor highlights-thing yet, so that's not what I haven't been after with the gouache (yet). I am still dealing with the muscle memory I have for my acrylics, so I often try to mix some white in if I need a tint. I haven't done it often, but it's there when I need it...... and there's still hope that I might learn how to just thin some paint or leave blank spaces, eh?
Anyway, you've given me a lot of options and food for thought. Thanks!
