  • I have coveted this palette for years and I finally bought it! Blick had a great price and I had a couple of tubes of paint I needed to order so I couldn't resist: shrsl.com/3kvrl (blick)
*If blick is out of stock Amazon has them for a few dollars more: amzn.to/3yF60pr (tip: check "other sellers" because they have cheaper ones but delivery is slower.
    **Jackson's has them cheaper! www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/sch...
It's hard not to be biassed because I have wanted this palette for a long time. The enameled metal palette is heavy-duty and well made. Schminke is a top watercolor manufacturer. You get the palette and 8 half pans for around $83. I am happy with my purchase. Colors included are: Cadmium red light, Carmine, Lemon Yellow, Yellow ochre, Prussian Blue, Ultramarine, Sepia and Dark Olive Green (looks like Hookers green)
    Pros:
    High-quality enameled metal palette
Split complementary mixing colors are included so you pretty much can mix what you want.
The palette holds about an ounce of water, enough to fill the cup all the way but I recommend only filling in halfway so you can hold it and not slosh it out of the cup when rinsing.
    Brass fittings should prevent rust.
    Cons:
The colors are very traditional so they may feel lackluster if you prefer a modern palette.
You could lose the cap if you are not careful
The water capacity is small, about an ounce I would guess. I found it very serviceable with these paints.
Bottom line: I will call this a useful novelty palette. I can put it in my pocket with a small sketchpad and brush and be all set. I won't replace my Portable Painter and my primary travel watercolor palette but for quick trips, it does nicely.

Regarding the Whiskey Painters and whether they really painted with whiskey... Yes, they painted in pubs and taverns using their drinks for their water. It started way back when, as they say, with a group of friends who belonged to the Society of Akron Artists in Ohio. One of them was a traveling salesman for his manufacturing company, and he used to take a small set of paints and a brush he had devised, something like our current travel brushes, that would fit in a tin aspirin box. Remember those? He cut down pieces of paper to 4x5 that would fit in his shirt pocket so that he could paint after work wherever he was traveling in the pubs and bars while he relaxed. The patrons of the bars loved it and he would give his paintings away. He called them his “Whiskey Paintings.”
He enjoyed it so much he convinced a bunch of his art buddies back in the Akron Watercolor Society to do it together after their regular meetings. They would all drink and paint, using their whiskey water, and then put all their paintings in a hat, draw them out, and each go home with a painting! He had his factory design and produce the original mini palettes which he gave out to his buddies.
The original club had 14 members and they drew up a charter with a set of bylaws in 1962. The membership is limited to 150 members, and you have to be sponsored by one of the members, and someone has to resign or die before a new member can join.
    whiskeypainters.org
The reason I know so much is because years ago when I was a young woman studying art, I took a week long workshop with Marc Moon, AWS, one of the original members who was a masterful watercolor artist. He was in his late 60s at the time, and was nationally known. In fact, I saw him described on their website in this sentence. ...”with legends such as John Pike, Tom Nicholas, Paul Strisik, Don Stone, Marc Moon, and Edgar Whitney.” So you can see where he ranked amongst watercolorists at the time.
After the workshop each day, our class members would gather in the evening after supper at a local fancy tavern and he would paint one of his mini paintings and give it away to someone.
One night he chose to paint my portrait and it was outstanding! It is one of my treasures to this day. But best of all, a couple of weeks after he returned to his home, a courier pulled up to my door with one of his paintings, a full sheet, double-matted and framed beautifully. I was astounded! It’s one of the most beautiful watercolors I’ve seen, certainly one of his best. Everyone who sees it remarks on it, especially fellow artists. I knew he had sort of “taken a shine” to me as his student, but I certainly didn’t expect that!
    Sorry to be so long-winded!

@@thefrugalcrafter I thought you would enjoy knowing that it wasn't just an urban legend or myth that they used whiskey on their little paintings. The Whiskey Painters of America is having their first group exhibition after Covid on Nov. 27 of this year, and the paintings submitted can't be any larger than 4x5 and framed no bigger than 8x10. But some of the artists can pack a lot in that small space!

I have 2 Whiskey Painter's Palette, but without the water cup and flask. I had my husband pull out the center rail with pliers. In the first palette, I now can fit 15 Winsor & Newton pans, in 3 rows of 5 with the pans in vertical/portrait orientation. I got the idea from a Jane Blundell photo.
The 2nd palette I filled with tiny square 1/4 pans. In that way, I can fit 24 pans. 4 rows of 6. There's enough room left inside to put a thin travel brush & a few extra pans if you put them on their sides.

  • @justacatwhocantype

I like Sepia for monochrome painting or on a really limited palette with only a cool blue. And I love Schmincke paints! They are my favorites along with Winsor&Newton - Yep, I'm boring. I also love my old Lukas paints but I recall your video about how you bought that Turquoise, and apparently they have sadly changed....
Both Schmincke watercolors and gouaches are excellent, and here in Germany they are also quite reasonably priced. And I absolutely love that Schmincke refuses to add honey to any of their paints. I know, people love their honey paints, and I do like myself some Sennelier, but overall I am not a fan of honey paints. I like paints that dry hard and solid. Paints that will stay in their pans and not act like a magnet to dust and cat hair.
If you would like a granulating Utramarine by Schmincke, their French Ultramarine is great. They have 3 Ultramarines: a mixed one, this non-granulating one and a really granulating French one. Schmincke does have a few nicely granulating colors in their regular Horadam line, it's just not that many, but they do exist. They also have a lovely Potters Pink.

  • @suzisandpiper
    @suzisandpiper Год назад +4

If you get the Winsor n Newton or Daler size half pans, they easily fit down the centre. The Schmincke are a little squarer and bigger which may be why they sell it with the 8 pans instead of 12. If you put magnetic tape on the pans each side you can leave off the rails and get two extra pans in by turning them length ways. I have 14 pans in mine x

Their French Ultramarine granulates pretty nicely and is a single pigment colour :) I could totally understand why one wouldn't buy Schminckes from overseas - for me here in Germany DSs and DaVincis are the more costly options - I could totally imagine it being the other way around for y'all in the States. And yes, let me confirm that you could totally refill pans with the tube pans and they work just the same as if you bought the pans. Most colours in my palette are Schminckes - aside from very few Van Gogh's and one Windsor and Newton - and I bought most as tubes and filled my own pans. And they do rewet and paint just as nicely as the few odd pans that I got.

I normally get them in tubes, but recently bought the set of 9 full pans on sale (under £40, too tempting!). As you say, the swatch sheet is “nothing to write home about” 😂 but they do mix beautiful colours! I painted a colour wheel on the back of my swatch sheet to get more inspired 🎨

I'm so glad you treated yourself. This palette is DIFFERENT and the weight really adds something to the whole aesthetic of it. The cuteness value is off the charts. It was actually my first intro into artist quality watercolors. I didn't use it much because I wasn't yet comfortable with the intensity and I wasn't familiar with pigment numbers yet. Meeden half pans fit perfectly, BTW. I added the following Schmincke colors to mine: Pure Yellow (PY154), Potter's Pink (PR233, beautiful granulation!), Cobalt Violet Hue (I have never been able to find a pigment code for this color but it's very pretty), and Neutral Gray (PR255, PB60, PO62). I set them up with the yellows, reds, blues and pink/purple on top of each other and then the others across the bottom row.

I know that I will succumb to the temptation at some point but I am strong for now. I am going to live vicariously through you. The way Schmincke rewets, the way it glides over the paper, how finely ground the pigments are, just tickles my watercolor aesthetics to the max. Enjoy 👍
Edit: ah yes, Schmincke are one of the very few brands, which have the exact same paint in their pans and their tubes. I love that. In addition to the stable quality of the paints they are easily my ultimate favorite.

I also loved the beautiful carnations you painted. They were so pretty. I thought it was interesting that you mentioned people might be disappointed in the pay out of the Schmincke colors. I think if anyone really feels that way, maybe they need to reassess their thoughts about paint. Vibrancy is often unrealistic - especially in landscape and nature scenes. When I paint with my M. Graham paint I have to really tone it down because it’s too vibrant. I don’t have to do that with my Schmincke paint. Thanks for the great video!

I had that palette before it went MIA 😢
I had removed the rails and placed magnetic tape under the pans and was able to add 4 more Schmincke half pans. I guess the tape gave them just enough lift to free some room between the the rows so they were able to fit nice and snug.
ETA: I forgot to mention that my colours are lighter when I pick them up from half pans because the water to paint ratio is different than when fresh from the tube. If I put a bit of paint on my palette out of the tube, then add water, the consistency is thicker. If I want the same strength from the half pan than I get out of the tube, I have to wet the half pan, scrape off a bit of paint with a dry brush or knife, and add it to the palette, then I dilute with water. That way, it's samey-samey. I also do this when I paint with the Schmincke half pan I make myself. For met, it's that darn water-to-paint ratio. 🎨😉

I had this exact thing with the 8-pigment set since 2017. The exposed metal edges have rusted. I just ordered another without the paints this time ($80), plus another without the water tank. I am making two pigment sets with based on brands, and I got the second one without the water tank because I find myself not using the built-in water storage. But then again, when I need some water, it’s there. However, I think they should include two wash basins (for cleaning and clear water) - now I can use the old one as a second water basin. Yes, I agree the pigments are not as vibrant or intense, and had replaced all with Daniel Smith. I plan to fill in the 2nd with W&N Artist-grade. It’s currently priced some $120 in the Philippines for the 8-pigment set, and the one one without the water tank and without the water basin is $30.

Hi Lindsey, yes the color palet are pretty traditional. They are produced since 1892. There are 140 colors + the supergranulation colors. They have a dot card for the 140 + an extra dot card for supergranulation. Some are more vibrand. I love the way they flow and almost of there hole range every color acts and reactivad the same way. I hate with Daniel Smith that some behave not same way. And yes as their webside sa , the reason why they flow in this way is in the formula. In Germany they are not exacly cheap but DS is more expensive.

I solved the loose water container cap by attaching it with the lip connector on top. It’s not perfect, but fits much more snugly. I did add 4 empty Cottman pans in the middle row.

I'm a beginner in the watercolor workd. I inherited an old old Windsor Newton set that my brother never touched from the late 70's. And recently treated myself to the large travel set my Magicfly. I like them both and the magicfly has the mixing areas like you are mentioning. I love ypur reviews! Please keep them coming! Oh no! Another palette I NEED...😂. I love Schmincke and they’ve really upped their game with all their new super-granulating colors. Since I love granulation, their French Ultramarine is my fav ultramarine of all brands. They are more expensive in the US though, particularly now. But well worth it and I get the tubes at Jacksons for the best prices. Thanks for this review (I think...lol).

It is not really a whisky painters palette, it is a Fome palette made in Europe, Italy I believe. I have the one without the water container. Same colours. I added four colours from the Horodam range and they fill some of the onmissions. I have a second identical one without the Schminke branding, so 24 colours in something that will fit in a small pocket! Lovely! But these tins far predate the Whisky Painters. As far as I can remember I added a Quin gold, a purple I forget which, there are loads, an alternative green and their gold which is really lovely. The second box came as a completely different set of nine in an ordinary palette, I added to that as well…. Enjoy your set, the paints are lovely…. I love your excitement over setting it up! The schmincke paints are designed to be pretty well behaved and consistent with each other, they really do wet very well indeed, no predropping water needed.

I’m telling myself I don’t need more Schmincke pans….but oh, that palette! 😍 I have one which looks similar but doesn’t have the water reservoir; it’s just the palette part with the little rails. Solid as anything! I like the colours in your new palette. Enjoy! 😊

This is a lovely palette. Schmincke's 'finest ultramarine' is supposed not to, or only a little, granulate. The pigments are grinded very fine. For more granulation the french ultramarine is the better choice. I love that they have both.

Lindsay- I have used this palette for several years for plein air painting. It is tough to get the water out of the flask, but you get two half water buckets, so plenty to do a painting. As you will discover, half pans do fit in the center, but you need the “smaller” pans. Jackson’s pans fit, but old DS pans do not. It is a very nice useable palette for outdoors and encourages lots of mixing. I do find the mixing area a bit constrained, so sometimes you need to clean with a rag.

Oh, gosh, I have had this palette on my wishlist for the longest time! I think they put the sepia because it mixes well with all the other colours and also gives you a nice grey - however, it's made up of 3 pigments!
Schmincke has 3 Ultramarines in varying degrees of granulation. Usually, they put their Ultramarine Finest which is non-granulating into their palettes. Then they have just Ultramarine blue containing PB15 and PB29 as you mentioned and a granulating French Ultramarine, which is PB29. If you want even more granulation, you coul go for the Cobalt Blue Deep (PB74) which is also on the red side but a little darker.
For burnt sienna, I would reccomend the transparent Sienna (PR101). Their Burnt Umber is a one pigment colour - PBr7.
Generally, Schmicke are usually known for their transparency and the formulation in their pans is the same as their tubes. They have not changed their formula, though. As you noted, they are perfect for glazing and do look very vibrant on the second glaze or used in milk consistency. I definitely love them on all papers but I can only compare them to DS and Sennelier paints. By the way, I have very old Schmincke watercolours from my father and grandmother from the 50s of the last century and they still rewet in an instant just like all their new paints. 😍🥰
I agree with you on all you said about the tins! Schmincke still have those sharp edles, as far as I know! 😔 And how cute is that W&N-palette!! I have their plastic one - also from my father. It's very practical but not half as cute! Oh, I also like to keep brands to themselves in complete palettes. As for all my paints that are bought loose or in tubes, I keep them by colour. 🥰😍😘

You can put 14 W&N pans or 12 Schmincke pans, the middle row is standing a little bit above the others, but the Van Gogh and Rembrandt pans fit in the middle row perfectly. If you leave out the stoppers, you can fit whole pans in it!

How exciting! I love travel palettes too. I have a bijou box - not Winsor and Newton. I have actually filled it with 15 pans. I had some ceramic original Winsor pans that I was keeping because they were historical but I decided to use them. Better to be used than stored in a drawer. My box has only two wells and because it’s not original I’m tempted to create more wells with hot glue. I’ve read other people do that. Enjoy your Whiskey Painter’s box.

I found that palette about 3 weeks ago too. I had been stalking it for a while, and the empty versions were just more than I could bring myself to buy. I purchased it just for the palette, because it was a decent price, but I’m ok with the paints too. I have some Looneng brand half pans from Amazon that fit just fine in the center, I also added 4 more colors. I didn’t get any duplicates with my other Schmincke tube paints. It’s probably too heavy to hold for my arthritic thumbs, but I’ve used it on my desk almost daily since I got it, so it has proven to be very useful. Their Ultramarine Finest is just about the smoothest ultramarine I’ve seen, while their French Ultramarine is one of the most granulating. Their traditional paints are definitely smooth and finely ground. Interesting that you think they are brighter on cellulose than cotton. I hadn’t thought about that, but I have a Montval swatchbook and also noticed they are really nice on that paper. I’m gonna play with that this afternoon, I’m also going to do some Susan Harrison-Tustain techniques on some Arches paper. She builds lots of layers and it looks like you can dive into her paintings. Jackson’s has just posted a new video on their art blog with a Schmincke rep, it was very interesting, their philosophy is that the artist should have complete control. No wild flow here! They do not use any enhancers or other ingredients besides pigment, ox gall, gum arabic and water. Except for their newer brilliant colors. Thanks for doing this review!

Ohhhhh Lindsay that's so exciting!!! I just got my unicorn palette a couple weeks ago-- the Frazer price palette stocked with my friends half pans. I used one of the layers for half pans for a small piece of cotton rag and for a silver black velvet size 8 travel brush. It's truly perfect. The only thing missing from the kit is the sketchbook!

Lucky you, it's nice to splurge from time to time. For some reason every brand I own has a weak ultramarine except for Schmincke. I own a rare palette (Slimline) but i had to add reds for the reason you mentioned and browns for skintones. This brand is one of my favorite but the default selection could be better in my opinion.

Just a suggestion, when you go to the eye Dr take a small swatch or paints with that pesky fine print and see if they can help you read that level. It helps having the actual item you want to read in hand when it's something so specific.
