SubhanAllah it's amazing that this applies to the time of the Salaf and how they might've endured fitna between ulema and only until later certain discrepancies were resolved by the later generations. For example to fitna of isnad with Habib ibn Abu Habib

@51:30 Imam Ibn Hajr says in his Hudā as-Sārī the muqaddimah of Fath Al Bari- there are 1341 Muallaq narrations (in Bukhari) v2 -pg 511 -Dar Resalah Al-Alamiah 4th Edition. The Balaghat of Imam Malik are stronger than Bukharis Muallaqat.

Umar ebn Abdul Aziz emphasized writing knowledge. ther were books before Imam Malik's book, but sincerity is important.
Many wrote the 40 hadith book collection. Iklas go far.
what are hadith books not based on fiqh or tazkiya or stories or adab but fully on fiqh - they are called hadith ahkham.
Bulgh Mahram falls under fiqh. Umdatul Ahkham. Muharral by ebn Abdul Hadi
Muwatta is first book we have that is hadith ahkham.
Jami is a book of everything. Stories, tafsir, Aqidah, sirah, fiqh.
Sunan Abi Dawud is Hadith Ahkham, Nasai, Ebn Majah.
There is dispute if Tirmidhi is Jami, jami means comprehensive.

Md Adam Ethiopi has a line of poetry saying on what is jami.
Muwatta means to path a pave.
When Malik wrote Muwatta he presented it to 70 scholars and they said it was very good and all of them agreed to it's high value.
Imam Malik said he saw a dream of the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him saying pave & simplify the way of knowledge.
Muwatta means to pave and simplify the path.
The only book that will remain is the one in which is for Allah!

Malik said he entered Abi Jafar Mansur, a ruler at that time who said truth is you are upon good. And you deserve rulers to respect you.
Ibn Qaldun said Abi Jafar mansor was an 3lim.
He said I want you to write a book, stay away from strict views of ebn Umar and leniency of ebn Abbas, and shad views of ebn Masud.
ebn Masud was 3lim of Kufa, and Abu Hanifah met him, MEcca's imam was ebn Abbas and Medin'as imam was ebn Umar.
There was a divide of ahl HAdith or Hijaz and Ra'i or Ahl Kufa.
Imam Shafi masdressa was to study with Wadi Abu Yusef, Shaybani who are students of Abu Hanifa and then took knowledge from Imam Malik.
AbdurRahman ebn Mahdi said to Imam Shafii now that you met two schools create a middle path , and he wrote his risalah!
This is usul al fiqh.
Ahl Hadith were said to be overboard on words.
This goes back to hadith none are to pray Asr until you reach Quraydah, some sahaba said it's literal others said it's just meant to rush there.

ebn Qayyim says to reconcile word and meaning is enter usul fiqh.
a person can pray in a dark room nude and say the ayat the night is a clothing...
Ahl Ra'i strggled to find hadith so they used qiyas.
all mathhabs dispute on what is evidence.
they agree, Quran, hadith, ijma and qiyas is evidence...
then each mathhab suggested something else.
Hanafis use istisan, masahil mursala. - Imam Shafi disregarded Istisan.
Imam Malik said ijma MEdina is special.
Imam Shafi said why is a land proof against others?
yahya ebn yahya laythi... a ruler would have i/c w/ his abd bints in Ramadan and then free abds everyday.
Yahyah said a marsalah mursala , you have to fast 60 days instead.
ebn Taymiyya speaks of this in kitab bayan dalil butlan tahlil.
Abi Jafar said if you complete this, I will make it a constitution to the Kaba.
today if you don't follow a personal ijtihad they say you are off.
Imam Malik said don't do this, it's only my ijtihad and ppl have heard from hadith I haven't.

they took hadith as their religion. To take them away from this is rough.
Abi Jafar said if you would of obeyed me I would have commanded the people.
Maliki scholar Abdil ebn Abdil Bar in kitab jami bayan ilmi wa fadli brings this story, under chapter ihsaf fi ilm or being fair and just in knowledge.
Some issues have no iktilaf or differring like in Tawhid Ilah or Tawhid Siffat...
but where to put your hands, there can be differring.
Bukhari specialized in hadith of Imam Malik, Sahih bukhari is the most sahih book as it has the most sahih isnad.
Also Bukhari is Jami, while muwatta are ahkham.
Imam Malik errored in many isnads and many are daif.

Imam Bukhari has balaghat, 4 hadith that are daif and disconnected...
These hadith are side points.
Yet Imam Malik used bhalughat as sahih, he didn't use the condition of a connected chain as for it to be sahih, so Bukhari had a more rigid standard.
Muwatta has mursal hadith, mursal is sahih to Malik, Shafii takes it w/ 5 conditions.
TO pave the path is a virtue to Muwatta still has a book of virtue.
Md ebn Hazmi Dhahiri, was harsh on Muwatta,
Walid al Baji refuted ebn Hazm.
Hazm's Muhallah has athar of sahaba - says its above comparative fiqh & said its for beginners.
Hazm says deviI does qiyas and we shouldn't do qiyas.

ebn Hazm on ayat not saying oof to your mother, does it mean not to hit?
Dhahabi said Sahihayn, then Muwatta. then the 4 sunan.
Muwatta has hadith with fiqh, to him he said this is more beloved then just memorizing fiqh.
Shah Waliullah Dehlawi said if you want to do ijtihad, read Muwatta Malik as it has good ahkham hadith.
habib ebn habib read muwatta on imam Malik.
Ai DAwud said he ia kaththabs, Ahmad critisized him.

Yahya ebn Bukharin, many imams ijazah goes back to him.
Dhahabi said habib ebn habib
Bhukari avoided yahya's work as it's based on habib. - Qadi iyad reporeted this.
Yahya ebn Main tested abu Nuaym, mixing up hadith attributed to him & not so, and he noticed it.
Scholars don't accept hadith attributed to him when it's not.
Students comparing there collection of hadiths to habib ebn habib is barely different.
