Great idea for this series, but this 'vintage filter' is terrible

I bought the same last saturday ( same colour same engine 2.0 , from 1989) 110000 km, 2500 euros. The steering wheel is big and low which can be a pain for tall people; the steering is heavy and the car sits low compared to modern sedans. The history of the car is unsure but the car is very comfortable. It's a shame petrol is so expensive in France ( 80% tax) because it s a good car for cruising and is very stable at 150 km/h.

I've been driving a 1992 190E 2.0 automatic for about 6.5 years now. Nothing much has gone wrong with it except for a leaky water pump, thermostat, 2 ball joints and a hole in the (still original) exhaust. All of it pretty cheap to fix. Why spend €10.000's for a new car when you can drive such a dignified, well built, classic car for a mere €1500 with no depreciation and a few €100's/year maintenance & insurance costs?

A friend of mine had a company car Merc 190E bought for him new around 1994, it was manual and had wind up windows and as such was a basic as you could get, but it was a Merc and drove beautifully!

I love this car. I got a 1992 190E in white. 2L engine with automatic transmission (my frist auto after 10+ years of driving).
I got it for £4k with only 60k miles on the clock, and now it's at 67K after a year of owning it. That was from a garage, and even had a 3 month warranty on it. A few things went wrong, but they honoured their guarantee and fixed everything. Even went above and beyone to provide me with a temporary car dropped off to my work place.
I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. It's quiet, smooth, reliable, looks good, comfortable. It catches peoples eye too. I frequently get compliments for it.
It's nice... Being able to look out at a car park, and your favorite car is already the one you own.
It's a no nonsense car... It gets the job done without a fuss, and everything is well built.
It's like a time capsule... To a time when things were proper and good.
no blinding LED lights, or stupid digital displays. No annoying push buttons - Everything's a clunky, robust switch.

I had a beautiful 2.0 auto in black with full black leather seating and the full electric pack with a/c, a top of the range choice. I bought it when it was ten years old for £3000.00 with just 11000 miles on the clock from a lady doctor who had only driven it from her home to the surgery (true story). The first time I took on the motorway and drove 100 odd miles at 90mph there was like steam/smoke coming off the underside. I pulled in at a service station and got an AA guy to look at it, he said it had never been driven over 30mph and was literally just burning off the factory oil coat on the underside. I drove that car for 10 years every day and it never once let me down and had so few issues I can't remember what they were. All you had to do was service once a year and do oil changes. It had awesome Mercedes alloys and every bit of it was intact including the medical kit. I eventually sold it to a guy who was a camera man on Top Gear and until I moved abroad ten years ago I still saw it occasionally in London and kicked myself for selling it - I sold it for £3000.00, I had ten years of great driving and got every penny of my money back. I still miss that car.

  • @craigbarber4140
    @craigbarber4140 8 лет назад +1

My son and I share a 190E 1.8L manual and we both love it, so it gets our vote. I see some people comment on the expense of owning a Mercedes but this is incorrect when you can work on them easily yourself and use second-hand parts, especially at self service wrecking yards when items are priced the same as any other make. They are reliable and safe.

I bought a 2000 Mercades CLK 230 Kompresser convertible for £500. Its in a lovely dark red and has a nice beige interior. The only thing wrong with it is a tiny bit of bubbling on the wheel arch. It's a top scec Avantgarde model and it's quite well speed. Front and rear parking sensors, 2 stage heated perferated leather seats, wood trim, remote locking, fully 1 touch auto electric windows, electric retractable roof. I mean it's not as well equipped as the modern cars I own but still weel equipped. I bought it 2 months ago with 80,000 miles and it now has 81,000 miles on it so spent a good 1000 miles with the car

1000€-2500€ gets you either the 1.8 petrol, 2.0 petrol, or the 2.0 non-turbo diesel ... The 2.5 turbo diesel is 5k+, and the Evo can get to 200k € easily...

It's a good car. But please treat it with the love and respect it deserves.
I know this makes me sound old, but they simply don't make cars like this anymore. Once it's gone, it's gone kind of deal.
Don't take it racing, or show off in it. Don't speed around corners or generally act like an idiot in it.
When you crash one of these cars, you're hurting every car lover out there.

Lots of things we wanted when we were kids or young adults but couldn't afford now became available for a fraction of their original price. Good things do come to those who wait indeed, and now we value them even more as we see the difference between them and modern cheap crap they keep on churning out.
