- Ninh explains ‘Could NFL Europe work today as a Developmental League?’
With the recent demise of the XFL and AAF, could the NFL bring back NFL Europe (or NFL Europa) as another developmental league - and furthermore, could it work?
Ninh explains the story behind the rise and fall of NFL Europe, which started life as the World League of American Football (WLAF) and ended as NFL Europa. However, would a revised NFL Europe work in today’s economy? The NFL is hosting four games a year in London, this has changed the landscape of the National Football League.

Do you want to see a NFL developmental league return to Europe?
Comment away!
Ninh Ly of course I do
Asia also need one.
Ten teams in two divisions bringing back some of the old markets and covering every country represented in the EFAF Big 6 (look it up if you don't know about it already), have games shown free-to-air domestically (Channel 4 making a comeback?) as well as NFL Network and/or some of the big networks here in the States.
If the timeframe was similar to the AAF and XFL, you could have a whole season run March-August.

EAST: Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Frankfurt

what's the point of having 2 divisions when you only have 8 teams?
No, you need cities with adequate stadiums in terms of field dimensions. You dont have any money to build any new facilities. So with this in mind:
Berlin, Dublin, London, Edinburgh, Rome, Cardiff, Barcelona, Paris, Munich, Amsterdam, Brussels, Marseille etc.
Cool, that's not bad ... I'd remove Brussels for Edinburgh, and Vienna for Amsterdam and that's pretty solid.
@@deathtoluke Canadian Football League only has 9 and had 8 the majority of my life and it worked fine. The last playoff spot is determined by win total and not placement in division which kept things more competitive I think.
i.e.)4th place team in west has a better record than the 3rd and 4th placed teams in the east so the west team joins the east playoffs.
West can replace Brussels for Edinburgh and East can replace Vienna with Amsterdam
Also, 6 New divisions can be added (4 Non Europe, 2 Europe)
North: Los Angeles, Toronto, New York and Tokyo (Which does seem a bit out of place but still)
South: Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane

In Finland, we have a league with 7 teams of which the one in the capital, the Helsinki Roosters, is absolutely dominant. They've won it all like ten years in a row. I'd love to watch them play teams from all around Europe, and so would many other Finns. A huge percentage of the population of Finland lives close enough to Helsinki where there would definitely be enough ticket sales.

I would like to see a video about the new Elf (european league of Football) and what you think about it.
Hard to say really, I've not seen a great deal of it.
With the NFL season going to 17 games, it would be better to have the one extra game of the season of each team to play throughout Europe, not just in London, but also in potential European markets like Berlin, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Dublin, and Rome before reviving NFL Europa. It needs to develop more interest to the Europeans to the game not only to watch but also to play.
Yes, I believe that would work.
I hope NFL Europe can be restarted again with many significant fixes included selective choice for the field so the field used can be fit to NFL standard
BTW, as an Asian, currently only very few countries who well known this sport, such as Japan, South Korea, and possibly Philippines. But I hope NFL can expand their markets also to Asia so they can make NFL Asia, and many Asians may be appreciated it. I think this sport should be third most popular football code after soccer and rugby union

I don't think players would want to live on a different continent for a substantial amount of time. That an the London series features pro teams, a minor league isn't going to feature the best of the best. Putting a developmental league were American football isn't that popular isn't a great idea, you're watching scrap players with a few exceptions. Most of Europe isn't interested in American football either. The only way it might work is if a majority of the players are from there home country.
Yes, technically you're correct and that's the reason why it died the first time around. I technically would have said the exact same thing two years ago.
Nowadays, there's a surplus of good (star power) college players, and so long as they don't do silly things again.
Marketing and money solves everything.
The truth is a lot of very good college players don't make the NFL there is a lot of American football players today with good size or speed just not NFL size or speed.
Genuinely never thought of the nfl potentially re doing nfl Europe😂😂 I would have just guessed they would move the jags over here tbh but that’s actually an interesting way of getting nfl quality players over here
It would solve a few problems, yeah.
It ABSOLUTELY could work. I was in Paris last year and a lot of bars were advertising Super Bowl parties. The fanbase is there. The NFL could make it profitable now with digital streaming so American fans don't have to watch the games live. Luxembourg deserves a team tho. That country is rich as crap and also can easily host teams from Paris, Duesseldorf and Amsterdam. The XFL didnt bring the Dayton Triangles back but I'd root hard for a Luxembourg Lions/Legends/Legionaires/ whatever team any day.
I dunno about Luxembourg but I largely agree with everything else you said.
I'm just biased cause I used to live there.
Ly: we need a place for surplus college players
CFL: Am I a joke to you?
The CFL has the imports ratio.
It’s pretty clear that the CFL wants to be a nationalist stand alone league without affiliation. It has a model that’s working for them, and it’s more comparable to the KBO or Nippon League in baseball than anything else.
@@dafastestogre Very similar, except that the NPB allows for players to become "non-foreigners" (for lack of a better term) if they've played in the league for long enough. For example, Wlad Balentien has played 9 seasons in the NPB, so he no longer counts as a "foreign player", as he's become naturalized.
Good point on the CFL requirements ... something like 10-15 non Canadian players are allowed on each team ... if a European League did not have the same requirements and paid the same or better than the CFL ... a developmental league of of former college players could work.
@@sethfinberg348 It's max 20 americans minimum 21 canadians. on a 46 player roster.
It's like...you need local interest, a desire to for the local population to play themselves, and a quality product. It's a weird positive feedback loop that's kind of hard to start. Minor league baseball works in the US because you know the players you watch today can be the superstars of the future (because rarely does a player just *start* in the majors) and baseball is just a really popular spectator sport. It's harder to do with football because there's never been a real "developmental"/minor league outside of college. So you need to convince a few hundred players that relocating to Europe is their best opportunity, and that they'll have the opportunity to basically "audition" for the NFL. I mean, in theory, it's pretty easy to go "we'll get quality undrafted/unsigned/cut players, and maybe some veterans who would rather start in the D-league than be a backup/situational player in the NFL," but if there's no establishment, it'd be hard to convince them to go. It's like Bill & Ted's "We need Eddie Van Halen in our band, but we need a triumphant video first, but we don't even know how to play, which is why we need Eddie Van Halen!" bit :)
BUT
If you have a quality product, you could even get American football more ingrained as a sport people in Europe want to play, then you improve the overall player base (by luring soccer/Gaelic/Aussie footballers, rugby and maybe hockey players to play American football instead). It'd be awesome to see American football become more international the way baseball and basketball have.
Yes, I think you're pretty much on the money.
It's a interesting loop of things that have to go right (in succession) in order for the sport to work anywhere.
That said, I think you're correct in assuming that any European league may have to draw players from other sports in order for there to be that much demand to sustain the sport in the first place.
I agree. Very good assessment!
I sure remember them being featured in Madden 05, I actually pitted the Baltimore Ravens I guess the Amsterdam admirals
Cool!
The ELF is actually a good product. Crazy good. They beat a scrub team of American players that in previous years past would struggle against. Still not NFL level but there's staying power there. Go Galaxy!
The XFL ended due to a pandemic. There’s a curse on new leagues. If Europe started again a war or something would start 😂
Probably yeah.
Oddly enough, Covid may be the reason for this to start up again. The NFL salary cap is looking to drop roughly $20M+ next season. A bunch of stars may be out of work. Picture guys like Andy Dalton, LeVeon Bell, Jameis Winston and Antonio Brown as well as the collection of practice squad guys, undrafted players as well as local national players in NFL Europe. As far as TV, the NFL is a giant in itself that could use this as a means to push the NFL Network to cable/satellite providers in Europe and self distribute the games.
@@JoeyNiklas If they're cutting expenses to save on costs, it makes no sense to increase costs by starting a new league.

We will soon find out, the newly founded European League of Football will start games in June 2021.
One little correction:
American Football was a thing in Germany long before WLAF / NFL Europe.
The first title game, German Bowl I, was played in 1979.
Remember football isn’t like the other sports, England is holding the sport back in Europe, at least the states have MLS, and Europe has a big basketball culture, not England. It’s not easy to get to the NFL and the physical level is what gets you to the NFL. Skill players are running 9.98 10.5 100m sprints and 40in vertical leaps and bench press 225lbs 20 reps, and kids in the states start early training and it will work if England will grasp the sport and understand the sacrifice of what it takes to play
I think you underestimate the talent of our native athletes. I recommend that you watch that documentary about the NFL holding camps in London.
Ninh Ly I do,and the thing is, that it’s a lifestyle and it’s our number one sport. It’s America Canada Mexico and American (ruled) countries and it’s not easy as Europe thinks just to make it. Imagine Europe just had one super league in soccer a 20 team league with Madrid, Barca ,Man U ,Liverpool Chelsea,Arsenal, PSG, BMunich, B lev, A Madrid, Tott, AJax,Gala,Juv, Napoli, AC Milan, Inter Milan RBull, Newcastle,Porto, now fill the teams up with the best players in the world and its going to be a lot left out
I just got my Frankfurt Galaxy Jersey as I live in the US took me 2 months to get it !
Is the issue of CTE not a concern for European fans of American Football? As a Texan, I love the sport but I could see the lack of youth / parent interest driving the sports popularity down over time.
It probably will be when the poisonous British media needs something to complain about.
Ninh Ly thank you for your response.
One Year later and there is a European Football League even with the same Teams from the NFL Europe:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_League_of_Football
I feel like an NFL Europe per se wouldn't work, but what they could do would be to prop up some of the leagues outside of the US, where teams could then unload some players they feel that could use the seasoning while also helping their brands abroad while the foreign leagues would be getting an additional way of increasing funds by partnering up. You'd still have the national quota, the teams wouldn't play in large venues unless performing well in attendance levels and the level of play would improve abroad to make the game interesting for those markets the NFL is interested in catching.
I think it could work exactly as you described ... under the banner of NFL Europe!
@@NinhLyUK You mean like a sort of post-season deal where the champions of each country square off, not unlike the early days of the Champions League?

I'm no can of NFL but I think it'd be a great idea to implement so long as the same mistakes aren't repeated. I'd say it would work in Ireland. I am proposing a name for a Dublin based NFL Europe team: Dublin Harps.
Cool idea ... Dublin Harps. I like that!
I have a feeling that the XFL will return. The reason the league was canceled was through no fault of its own. It was just a virus that blew everything to hell.
Regarding the topic of the video:. I would love to see NFL Europe to return. Field Goals from 50+ yards were worth four points, a rule that I think should be implemented into the main US game, but to make it a bit more challenging, I'm increasing it to 55+.
It all points down to whether someone is willing to pay off all the debts and creditors from the last regime in order to retain the rights.
Vince McMahon as expressed interest, though nothing seems to be concrete.
As for extra point field goals, I agree.
If there was a europe league I'd Put teams in London, Scotland or a second England Team not from London, Frankfurt, Berlin Hamburg, Dusseldorf, 6 or 8 teams just to start actually no more than 10, allow that league to build, keep most games in small soccer stadiums, there are a bunch in Europe, allow more fan interaction and involvement
Apparently there's a new European League, mostly based in Germany that's trying to do this.
I think it would work better if they used the name "gridiron" instead of American football
They tried it. Nobody uses the term, everyone prefers 'American Football'.
love too see an irish team {one of my dreams]
Nfl Europe would be an amazing idea
As far as I can tell, the path to a new NFL Europe would involve 1st an expansion team in London, because (as you've pointed out) the groundwork for such a team has already been laid. Then, a 2nd NFL proper team in Germany - doesn't much matter where, if the sport was previously popular throughout that country. Then, once there are teams established in the continent, creating a full-on European league should follow, I think. I don't know if it'd work as a 3rd NFL conference, or a companion league, but either would work, I think. I don't know how it would take for NFL Europe (version 4) teams to be on the same competitive level as NFL proper, but I could envision some day having a Superbowl match between NFL US & NFL Europe.
That would be cool to see, yes.
IMO I see most teams in UK & Germany. As an Ami in Germany, I find a lot of Germans are becoming interested in Am football. I know at least one player was drafted from the GFL straight to the NFL.
Watching this after the elf has been already founded
Don't forget that NFL Europe would be competing against the over-saturated market of both rugby codes in western / southern europe. I would be favorable to expand the game in the north of europe, where rugby isn't really a thing (it worked for germany, idk why shouldn't it work in denmark or poland)
I don't see them as competition for the same fans though.
The German Football League started in 1979 outside of US Army bases. It was quite well known in Germany.
I believe so, yes.
Get the NFL down in Nigeria. We got Nigerian princes in the league and most foreign players in the NFL come from Nigeria and West Africa. More Africans are playing in the game then Europeans
Interesting idea.
To be honest, even in the 90s a $30 million per season loss was a rounding error for the NFL. They were looking for an excuse to kill it. The dynamics are different now though, so we‘ll see what happens.
Yes, I believe you're right. And things are definitely different now.
After seeing the video i think, You can make a video about how Association football can actually work in north America 🙂🙂
It can! And technically it does.
@@NinhLyUK Speaking of Association football, can you make a video explaining the Apertura and Clausura(Opening and closing) system in North American leagues?
Every time I talk about sports with my american collegues, two main objections are raised about soccer:
1) scores are two low, thus it is not exciting
2) you can have a tie and that's unamerican (some people said to me ironically or semi-ironically, but others really meant it!)
I honestly think that rugby could be more their jam and I hear that is growing quite quickly there (still miles behind soccer though)
It is interesting video I like go to the nfl London games
It's a fun time! If you get tickets to the London games, I highly recommend it!
Actually, the UK, and particularly Wembley Stadium had quite a long history of hosting the America Bowl pre-season game, which was well attended, and, thanks to Channel 4's coverage of the NFL, from the 80's, the NFL had a pretty good following of the NFL, hence, why the Monarchs attracted big crowds at Wembley.
It'd actually be very nice.
But at least they should make better jerseys than the one you're wearing, leave an inch or two sponsorless.
It would be cool.
And those jerseys weren't too bad compared to hockey ones.

If the nfl ever expands it should all be european teams and create a brand new division

Barcelona
Frankfurt
Amsterdam
And NFC europe division would include
Paris
Madrid
Berlin
Milan/Rome
Start it up with hamberg berlin amersterdam cologne frankfurt vienna then expand from there.
You're throwing random names in the air. There has to actually have considerable fans in a market to be a viable professional team.
Have you done a video on the German Football League?
Not yet?!
Since you have all this cool old sports stuff, and you're stuck at home... you think we could get a virtual tour?
Possibly?!
Can you do a video on why the USA isn't as good as europe at football, though it tends to excel at most other sports?
I'll consider it.
It would be huge in UK and Germany
Absolutely!
Would love this to happen. Have a European league that would eventually be 32 team-strong but initially starting at half that number for two or three seasons to drum up interest.
Idea for quotas of European homegrown talent is excellent. I'd love to eventually have a European draft of some sorts for these teams every year.
Here are my 16 initial teams:
3 German teams: Berlin Bombers, Munich Madmen and Hamburg Hurricanes
3 UK teams: London Knights, Manchester Monarchs, Glasgow Gorillas
2 Spain teams: Madrid Matadors, Barcelona Dragons
2 Italy teams: Roma Gladiators, Milan Maestros
2 French teams: Paris Piranhas, Marseille Sharks
Portuguese team: Lisbon Leopards
Dutch team: Amsterdam Admirals
Swedish team: Stockholm Scorpions
Russian team: Moscow Storm
Then it'll expand to include teams from Greece, Ukraine, Croatia, Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Czech, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Serbia, Slovenia, Ireland and another Russian team in St Petersburg.
I would be interested in hearing more about any research you did about football in Germany today. If the NFL were to try and sponsor play again in that country at any level, do you think the Germans would be interested?
Definitely
It could work if London’s team could have most of their schedule at home. It’ll allow for their fan base to grow and have something to look forward to with some regularity. Then travel after their game before their bye week. Similarly have US based teams travel the weekend after their last game of their bye week. That’ll give them a week to acclimate and work out. I’d personally would love to see a team in London. I’d travel just to watch a game.
Speaking of the XFL, what are your thoughts on its OT shootout format?
Good idea in theory, too bad I never actually saw it.

I think it could. Send Nick Mullens there to get further developed. I remember Brad Johnson played there in 1995 while with the vikings. Remember you don't get better if you don't play. One that stands out is Jay Fiedler not the strongest arm but turned out a respectable player ala 2001 and half of 2002. Plus Nick Mullens has that gun slinging mentality that could help with that as well as cut down on his turnovers

When I heard of NFL Europe 🇪🇺 for the the first time, I thought is was football as in soccer ⚽️. I had no idea Europe tried literally American 🇺🇸 football 🏈 for some time.
I think NFL Europe could work as a European development system and work alongside the XFL which already is working with the NFL.
It could work if done right I hope it comes back
I agree.
Even as an American, I'd rather have NFL Europe back than the XFL. Every corner of the US already has a NFL or NCAA team (except Alaska), and a developmental league team will always be second fiddle. And I'll keep saying this every time it comes up: The NFL would have made much more money on American TV rights to NFL Europe games if they linked NFL teams to specific NFL Europe teams, because it creates an instant cheering interest. Obviously you'd have to link multiple NFL teams to a single NFLE team due to the numbers difference, but just keep division rivals separated and you've got 1 team to support and 3 teams to cheer against. Unfortunately, I think the success of the London games has ironically doomed a NFLE comeback. They're not going to want to risk screwing things up and confusing the market about their product. Or re-build a successful NFLE franchise in London, only to suddenly have to yank it away and replace it with the Jaguars. It's not worth it. I feel badly for German fans of American Football though. They got a bad deal in this.
Could 'E'CFL (European Community Football League) work I think you mean.
Take our rules... or we'll make sure the French don't join!
What do you think about the proposed europe division with 4 NFL teams
I don't know. Before I would have said impossible, now I'm not so sure.
Explain the rules of kronum
Kronum already explained their own sport adequately.
Italians here. I don't see it working in Italy, at least not on the long term. As a novelty sure, but building a dedicated fanbase is hard. Here the team sport is soccer, while other sports barely rack up 5k attendances, even successful ones like Olimpia Milano (basket). The national teams have more following (see basket, volleyball and especially rugby), but this would be a club competition, so not really the same thing.
Back in the 70's an elephant ran wild at an A.F.L. game in Melbourne. Guess he wasn't a fan.BTW The reason why you feel so tired from flying is due to the lack of oxygen. Get some oxygen tanks. Finally, the N.FL. owners just like it as it is and they don't want any competition.
It could work if it was JUST Europe why have NA teams?
You are right, NFL Europe could work, but there are a LOT of things that need to line up. American football is more than a game, it's a culture. If Europe wants QUALITY football, you need to start seeing peewee leagues start, schools need to start leagues, bars/pubs need to start supporting teams and ideas. I love the game, I'm passionate about my team, and I would love the European sports fans to enjoy the game as well!
I was a fan of the World League of American Football and was a season ticket holder to the worst team in the world, the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks that had a record of 0-10. They would move on to become the Ohio Glory before the league would fold.
As an American, I've always thought that if Germans really got into American football, our players better watch out.
Honestly, the NFL could pick the eight largest markets in Europe and put a team in each. Expand if there is a need to new markets as interest develops. Should work, unless interest really isn't all that great. As an American, I have zero clue about actual interest level. Just leave my Jags alone. They stay put!
If they can persuade high school players to go there instead of dealing with the NCAA like what basketball is doing then it can
Then what would happen to college football?
They'd go to College first, as that's the best shot of making the NFL.
