The most impressive thing about this episode is that it manages to be so so gripping and intense despite only being set in one tiny room for the whole episode.
Widdums7
Bottle episodes can be extremely creative because the writers have to figure out a way to make that limitation interesting
@@thewerewolff7248 this is the magic of dr who. Well no anymore cuz now they have a far biggest budget
@@hothemeep1219 budget has fuck all to do with it, it's incompetent writer's. The best writer could do whatever he'd like with a huge budget
The first thing you mentioned is my favorite part: He didn't win, he freaking lost, we don't get an answer...hell, we don't even have a name for the thing, we just call it the Midnight monster. Everything about this episode is just amazing.
What really gets me is that at the end of the episode when Donna repeats after the Doctor, it freaks him out. It really shows how much the situation disturbed him.
I never saw it that way, I just assumed he hated her trying to speak Italian badly with that accent...lol
@@Defensive_Wounds No dude, it's because he just had traumatic event and almost died from creature that repeated after him and was draining him. Why would he tell her no just because of bad accent??!?!?
RageBash chill, they were just saying what they originally thought the scene meant. No need to get aggressive
@@ragebash13 I think he was joking
I LOVE midnight. Honestly the last 6 eps of S4 are some of the best of New Who full stop
Just commented the same!
Right???
Rebekah K new who? who in general
The part where they all are so quick to believe that Sky was safe is so emblematic of how people are willing to latch on to any way of feeling safe or going back to a terrain that they understand as fast as possible regardless of the contradicting signs or potential consequences. Also picking a scapegoat that makes you feel insecure or that comes across as other...perfectly what humans want to do.
The reason they believed skye is because wanted to believe that it was over. This whole episode is a psychological study on what normal people do in horrible situations. The sheep mentality takes over. It's awful but probably true. This is my favourite episode of doctor who.
It's an amazingly dark psychodrama. I was, not to exaggerate, slightly in shock after I first watched it. Midnight indeed!
Can we all agree that this is the monster that almost defeated The Doctor for good... the midnight entity...
My guess is its part of the devils leftovers who seek for revenge after the Doctor. Maybe the dark hole shred him to pieces which still are living. That would fit by the way the entity works !!
Let's pray it never comes back.
I would say the name of the monster that almost defeated the Doctor for good is called "A Group of Humans in a Panic."
@@firefly24601 Yeah, but without the "entity" they would have never done that in first place, you get it? The "entity" was still the CAUSE for all of this and yeah, the result would have been ironic. The Doctor who always saves the humans wherever they are, nearly were killed by their hands out of fear. Sky had also that same smile like that posessed dude from the devil episode. When she stood right under the spotlight while everyone else were standing around her. She smiled like that Toby dude.. i am sure!!
@@Preceyese-Seyeght I agree with most of the things you said. The similarities with The Satan Pit are remarkable. But the only person the Midnight entity only ever directly controlled was over halfway through the episode. No group control like was done with the Ood. It mostly manipulated (indirectly) ordinary people through fear, and then like a nuclear reaction they fed off each other. Even when he DID control Sky at the end, he only used her to manipulate the others into doing something they were already all-too-willing to do. They had the fear in them and were willing to do anything, Sky just gave them an channel to focus that fear into an action.
Whereas in the Satan Pit, the group of humans fought back, and did not ultimately give in to its attempts at fear. That's why he had to use the Ood to further his goals. If he could have gotten them to leave in the rocket through fear alone, I doubt he would have even thought of using the Ood.
Lesley Sharp did do a fantastic job as Sky, didn't she!!!
the music adds so much to the episode doctor who music is always on point
"Molto Bene"
One of The Best Episodes of The New Who ❤️
It’s a common misconception that in order to make something great you need big budgets or complicated stories. But some of the most creative and interesting ideas are forged from enacting limitations on what you can do. Limited setting (train car), number of characters, the creature is not really shown and instead is left to the imaginations of the viewer, perfect implementation of cosmic horror elements! One of my favorite types of stories.😁
Honestly, I'll bet this was the most scared the Doctor has actually felt that he was going to die. There was NOTHING he could do to not get thrown out of that ship, if not for the brave sacrifice of the hostess.
Three of my top ten Who stories come one right after the other here. The library two parter, this one, and the next one "Turn Left".
Doctor Who is known as a family show but at the same time one that kids “watch from behind the couch .”
Easily one of my favorites in the whole series.
Just a little fear and a little paranoia is all it takes to turn even the most everyday of people into monsters.
This is legitimately one of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who EVER! It was one of the few times I felt like the Doctor was in actual REAL danger, and I LOVED IT!
We saw Rose at the end of series 4 episode 1
And we also saw Rose briefly, again unnoticed, on a screen in The Poison Sky.
@@johnmayhew9769 you're right we did
Ahhh.... But you all missed Rose in the Library... Yes, she is there. Its tricky, but its Moffat.
@@karmakkaze where!?!
@@hayleyparr6565 Okay. Go to Geeked Out Nation's viewing of Season 4, Episode 8. He pauses it at 20:00 and you will see Rose and Bad Wolf on the wall.
This is called intellectual horor....no need to see the monster, the monster is just a reflection of us.....just look at everyone hoarding toilet paper, meat and food like mad men.....if the power grid would to go down...we would certainly kill each other! This is a tribute to the Twilight Zone episode "The monsters are due on Maple st."
This episode is a masterpiece, I love it more then blink or heaven sent.
Normal people: this episode is a masterpiece
Me: ok ye it is but more importantly *COLIN MORGAN AKA MERLIN LIKE WIPWMRMFJZIAGSTHRN*
Edit: I watch a couple of Merlin reactors if anyone else is interested
-TheTrophyMuncher (already in the replies but ya know why not here to)
-Lukeyread
-7th hour films
But seriously we need more Merlin reactors.
I recently finished Merlin after I started watching it a few months back. I'm so sad it's ended... it became my favourite series. :(
He is why I loved this episode so much even though he didn't do much
We've broken down. In the middle of nowhere!
@@BronyBurningAxe I watched it when I was younger but since I couldn't remember much I rewatched it last year and then when I finished it I remembered why I hadn't watched it for so long because that ending just😭😭😭😭
@@freyjarichardson1519 Yeah the ending destroyed me. I don't usually cry watching things, but I cried several times during that finale.
I know that this is INCREDIBLY late but I agree 100% with your review. One thing I love is that a lot of the time when the screen focuses on Sky you can see her reflection on the wall as if there is something else within her. The shadow of herself. Someone actually put together a play called Midnight based on this. It bombed but hey, that is how much it affected people. This is scary because you get to know these people at first as normal people but then they turn into monsters themselves and you have to wonder....what would YOU do under the same pressure. A master class in suspense.
i really want to watch a version of this episode as a play... i think it would be really good!

This is one of my fave episodes. The acting is incredible. The writing is brilliant. Just the brilliance of the timing. The synchronisation the actors nailed. That’s enough to make it a top tier.
This was the episode that hooked me into nuWho. I’d seen classic years before. Didn’t think a reboot would be good. But then came this episode. Amazing. 10/10. You are not overblowing this. This episode is this amazing. And doctor who has been terrifying kids for 50 years
Not only kids 😅🙋♂️
One of the most amazing things is this only exists because RTD had to fill a gap because the guest writer for this slot couldn't do it in time (or it was too expensive or something, either way they couldn't film it at that point). This was written deliberately on a budget at shortish notice by Russell.
Not overplaying the episode at all, one of the best episodes of who ever also this show did terrify me as a kid especially the clockwork people from the girl in the fire place episode for some reason
Yeah they are creepy to me too
Yep 😂 could not sleep with a clock in my room for years after that 😂
One of the most gripping episodes of television ever!
This is one of my top five episodes for sure, it was number one for awhile but there is some cool stuff coming haha. The making of this episode is very interesting if you can find it you should check it out. The way they filmed and recorded the repeating is very cool. I agree that the lady playing Mrs. Silvestre was so scary and good, she should have won and award for this.
Waters of mars. Listen. Those are the only two episodes I rate higher than this one. Listen reminds me of this one
One of my favorite episodes and one of the terrifying monsters of doctor who. Not just the midnight entity but human fear.
This is my favorite episode in all of Doctor Who. Also, the first episode I ever saw! It's just so brilliant how this episode has the ability to be so good and so terrifying with just a group of actors in a tiny set. One of my favorite things about this is the horror in the Doctor's eyes when they're discussing throwing him out and he can't talk. You can just see how terrified he is and how desperately he wants to move. It's just so fucking good.
Intense, gripping, an analysis of the fickle nature of human society, and all this in one episode of a 'kids Sci-fi show' God I love Doctor Who sometimes 😀 "The hostess, what was her name?" You mailed it with your ending analysis 👍🏼
Midnight basically takes every single trope of New Who and subverts them all perfectly. It has some of the best atmosphere, the best acting, the best writing, it's one of the best in all of New Who
P.s. The actor playing the professor, is the son of the actor who was the second Doctor in the sixties. So glad you've enjoyed these past few episodes.
The only character you are familiar with is the Doctor, therefore we end up relating to him most in this episode. So that feeling of fear that grips you when his voice has been taken and he’s about to be thrown out. Oh man, when I first saw this it felt like I was the one trapped and being dragged to my death, not the Doctor. Brilliant! So thrilling! 😆
To this day this has always been my favorite episode. Might be because I love horror, but more so eerie/creepy movies and shows. I think it was one of the few they executed perfectly
The next handful of episodes are some of the best ones of the show IMO
This won’t be the only episode that deals with fear and paranoia and makes you question if the ‘monster’ exists or not!
This episode was so good they showed it in my school class like the week it came out.
8:16 *Please* That moment still give me chills you can see the fear in the Doctor's eyes here.. David's acting here was a level 😳
I love this episode and I know a lot of people don't, it is also my birthday episode. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've been waiting for you to watch this episode.
It's tough seeing the doctor not being able to do anything.
I think the creature was creating fear, the more they talked the more they got scared and the more it learned, it took the doctors voice because he was the smartest in the room, he had the most experience and knowledge and it didn't take long for it to figure that out. Plus them already singeling him out didn't help.
I really liked Jethro and Dottie.
Fun Fact: The Almost Bald Man with Glasses on the train is actually Patrick Troughton's son, who of course played the 2nd Doctor
Creepy lady is the wonderful Lesley Sharpe one of my favourite actresses. Lesley worked with Russell T Davies and 9th Dr Chris Eccelstone before in The Second Coming
I agree with your review Midnight is an absolute brilliant fantastic episode everything about it is perfect. Oh BTW Doctor Who has a long history of scarring children! 😀😀
your face at 4:19! EVERY Whovian has THAT face at THAT moment. That makes you an official Whovian.
I’ve been watching this show since I was 4 and don’t think I’ve ever been too scared. The only thing I could not watch until about (ashamedly) 13 was the CGI face of the woman in the park in Forest of the Dead.
As for your question "this show wouldn't terrify kids?" Classic Doctor Who (1963-1989) was famous for being so scary that kids would hide behind the sofa while watching it. So while its family viewing, they also are trying to recapture that
This episode is the most terrifying episode of anything that I have ever watched. Reminder that Doctor Who can be considered a kids show in some circles lol
I've just come across this vid - now I need to go and watch all your other Doctor Who reactions. This is one of my favourite episodes because it's so contained - mostly in just one set.
I don't think the creature influenced them, it just enabled them to show who they really were, their masks stripped off by fear. And having a go at the Hostess "it's your job!" - yeah, like she's been trained how to handle this sort of situation …
I've seen this ep at least a dozen times and I've never managed to see outside moving anything.
The music is a tremendous component of the tension and suspense.
btw, It was Rose.
I've seen a vid on YT where they're doing this as a stage play - I don't envy the actress who's playing Sky - she's got to learn the whole damn script, everyone's lines, and the timing has to be perfect all the time.
Thumbs up on your review sir! I tore through the series a few years back. This particular episode I watched at work on a Saturday night - Sunday morning shift at about 03:30. Lights out, all of it. By like 03:50 I had the lights back on. I love this episode!
This is one of my favorite episodes. It's scary, shows how rubbish humans are, and despite seemingly a throwaway episode actually seeds into the finale. Plus I love just the doctor in a room. Its a great set up and aside from angels the most terrifying monster not only in dr who.....but just in general fiction (in my opinion but could you imagine if this escaped Midnight?!)
There's a saying: "Nothing is scarier". Knowledge counters fear so if we don't know why something bad happens, then we are really afraid. We know almost nothing about the threat in this episode.
Always appreciate your reactions, you've always given an authentic response, which is why this is one of the best Doctor Who reactions anywhere ever. great stuff- thank you
This is one of the BEST episodes EVER. I watch it at least 5 times a year and has shown it to everyone I know. You can watch it over and over and its still amazing.
We saw rose in 4x1
Rose was also in The Poison Sky and in the Library
Killashandra Falta when?
I know that there are other parts in the series but I can’t remember when for some reason.
@@wardjunior1450 (I answered this once, but I don't think it took. So excuse me if its a repeated answer.) It is very hard to catch, but it IS Rose. On the walls of Cal's house there are two paintings. One is of a blonde woman, and the other is below that painting and is of a wolf.
Mob Mentality: the episode. God I love it.
This episode and "Blink" are the two episodes I show people to get them into Doctor Who. One of the best episodes ever.
adorkability The thing is most of Blink doesn’t have the Doctor in it.
@@flee4342 True, but it's a really good episode.
What makes it more scary is like you said, it turned the Doctor's main "power" against him, his voice. The problem is showing this as an episode to people who don't watch Doctor Who, they aren't familiar with him that much of a character, so it turning his power against him doesn't give the same fear factor we have as viewers.
This was Rose's third teaser appearance in season 4. First at the end of Partners In Crime, second in The Poison Sky, again on a screen in the background.
Her fourth. She was also in the Library.
Okay, before I give extra Brownie points, you have to tell me where! There's a child's portrait (by Cal?) that could be of Rose... DVD ready to roll!
@@johnmayhew9769 Okay. Go to Geeked Out Nation's viewing of Season 4, Episode 8. He pauses it at 20:00 and you will see Rose and Bad Wolf on the wall.
You DID mean that picture! I think you earn the Brownie points. I mean, I just saw a girl who looked a bit like Rose and a dog (?) but I think now you’re quite right. Bad Wolf! Thank you!
@@johnmayhew9769 Moffat is a tricky fellow, lol! You are VERY welcome.
Bonus points: Did you catch the wallpaper in Cal's house? It's a FOREST...
This is one of the best episodes of all time.
Midnight is my 3rd favourite Doctor Who story of all time. So scary!
I think the reason this episode is so scary is because it shows how quickly normal people under duress become paranoid and violent.
If you are interested in Colin Morgan and want to see more of his work in horror genre I HIGHLY recommend watching his short series "The living and the dead"
He plays the protagonist. It's an INCREDIBLY well written show and Colin's performance is outstanding!
He's great as merlin too!!!
It’s the fear of the unknown.
You have seen rose, she appeard to Donna in ep 1 then rose was on the screen in the tardis during the sontaran episode also then in this one
God tennent is so good my favorite doctor i cant wait to see everything else doctor who has in stall for you
I never thought that you would give any episode a ten.
I always have mixed feelings because I've always wanted Colin Morgan to play the next doctor (or one in the future) but I don't know if that could work considering he's already played the established character Jethro in this episode. However, he NAILED this role and I wouldn't want to even think of someone else doing his part. Fingers crossed he comes back as a regular character.
Well, he later go on to play Merlin which, if you know your 7th Doctor era at all, would be a neat little in-joke if they did cast him as the Doctor at some point.
You last saw Rose in the beginning of the season, At the end of 4x1 partners in crime
She also appears briefly, again unnoticed on a background monitor, in The Poison Sky!
And in the Library...
I happened to pause at 4:19 as i was getting up to grab a drink and that was the most perfect pause i think i've ever done by mistake
4:19 *LMAO THE REACTION TO END ALL REACTIONS*
I thought it was a very good Episode as well. You should do a Reaction Video of your Friend or Friends watching this Episode. In Britain the kids love being scared in a TV Episode and can't wait for the next one. It's been that way from the start of Classic Who.
Amazing run of three episodes here.
This is my favourite Doctor Who episode of all time
I loved your reaction to Rose showing up on the screen. :)
My guess is its part of the devils leftovers who seek for revenge after the Doctor. Maybe the dark hole shred him to pieces which still are living. That would fit by the way the entity works !!
I knew you would like Doctor Who horror episodes. This season has more.
As good as silence in the library and forest of the dead.
A very scary episode best left open agreed. Also I love davids performance you can see how scared the doctor is which I feel is rare to see
Edit: I'm also so impressed you've sent merlin! I love merlin! ❤️
This episode was the type they did on the original Twilight Zone or Outer Limits.
Just a little FYI, Russell T. Davies said in an interview with Radio Times that this episode was a reimagining of an episode of The Twilight Zone called " The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street". If you've never seen it, it's amazing! Also, the next episode is a doozy too.
I immediately thought of that episode of "Twilight Zone" when I first watched this. Makes sense now.
This is still the scariest episode of Doctor Who EVER!
I called it 2 times now that you would give a 10. ^^
Sky Silvestri is cause of new year special. 50 anniversary you can find hints through out the episode. like the no 50 in the vehicle and outside of it too at the beginning
Also the dress from that Sky lady is pitch black with Rainbow colur blinking stuff attached to it like the silvester sky !!
This is to me the best episode of nuwho, possibly the best ever. Everyone points to Blink as the scariest but I can rewatch Blink now and am still amazed by it but NOT scared anymore however watching Midnight again is actually painful. The Doctor's greatest weapon, especially Tennant's Doctor is his ability to talk and it is turned against him. The reality is no one really knows how they would react if put in the same situation. They may say 'oh no, that wouldn't be me' but would you cannot be sure. This is a masterpiece that even schools have put plays on about (you can see them on RUclips) And you are NOT getting too worked up about it, everyone feels the same. :-) Oh and Sky is played by Leslie Sharpe. And the music was awesome too!
This episode was terrifying, honestly I try to avoid it because it’s so realistic, the darkness and the worst of human kind can be seen here. When good people do horrible things because of fear and paranoia. The first time I see doctor actually admit that he thinks he’s better than anyone in the room and his brilliance can’t save him here. He usually commands the room and can control a situation but here, no. He also just like all of them, did not know the hostess’s name. Spent time w/ her, conversed w/ her, and never knew her name. That’s not like him. Bet that’s how the women from the Witch Trials felt, helpless, voiceless, as the people around them did horrible things out of fear.
This episode is so hard for me to watch. I can't handle fighting and so this one gets me horribly anxious and upset. It also is so sad.
Season 4’s last episodes are just incredible
Great reaction to a great episode, really enjoyable
Best. Rose. Reaction. Ever!
this ep is so scary because it's more about human horribleness than anything else.
Yeah! My favorite Ten' episode!!! So effing fantastic.
Nope I normally dont watch dr who reactions but I came for this one because how amazing it is.......they have to say she switched bodies......because the alternative is so much scarier.......that you are no longer you.....something else is you....
What mic do you use btw?
The original Doctor Who was a children’s show. The “reboot” was a prime time evening show.
I remember seeing this episode when it aired, it traumatized me
This episode has a Twilight Zone feel.
Looking forward to the next 3 episodes......!!
Series 4 is just great! So many wonderful episodes!
The professor I believe is the second Doctors son
This is one of my absolute favourite episodes of Who, everything about it is so impressive. If you're interested there's an excellent behind the scenes video that shows how much work went into getting all of the sound and repetitions right..... and don't worry you didn't overplay it one bit!

This is one of my favorite episodes. So creepy!
This is definitely a personal top episode for me, just for its execution. It's a bottle ep, but it's such a great bottle ep.
