  • Опубликовано: 13 май 2024
  • On our latest episode of Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet, we are joined by Irish golfer Rory McIlroy.
There’s only one subject to start on: Roy Keane snubbing a young Rory McIlroy asking for an autograph whilst the former footballer was on international duty.
The Northern Irish golfer gives a full lowdown on LIV Golf and his stance on the breakaway league as well as his views on the latest big-name to join the organisation in Jon Rahm.
Rory also chats about supporting his boyhood team Manchester United and the prospect of buying shares into the club as well as his relationship with Tiger Woods and the formation of their TGL - a venture formed by the pair which is due to launch in 2025.
Our panel also discuss Rory’s incredible 2023 Ryder Cup and high pressure moments in sport, as well as the prospect of completing a major should he win the elusive Masters at Augusta.
We ask your Community Questions, with Rory revealing who his best friend in the sport is, which former professional footballer he reckons would be the best golfer and who was his footballing hero.
Finally, Rory, Ian, Jamie, Roy and Gary relive Rory’s 9-year-old appearance on the Gerry Kelly Show by taking on a golf chipping into the washing machine challenge.
Will one of the best golfers on the planet show them how it’s done or will one of our former professional footballers cause a shock?
If you liked the episode don't forget to let us know in the comments and if you want to listen only you can catch Stick to Football on all major podcast platforms.

From Northern Ireland but many in the North still consider themselves Irish. He chose to represent Ireland at the Olympics, so while he may say he’s on the fence, when push came to shove he obviously felt more Irish. It is probably irrelevant anyways seeing as the underachieving UK try to label every Irish sportsperson (we have lots) as British, to the point where the likes of Evan Ferguson (born and bred in Ireland, playing for Ireland) has to ask reporters to stop asking him about playing for England 🤡🤡🤡

Getting on like a complete man child, falling out with people over nothing and taking the huff. Couldn’t believe a man in his 60’s got on like that. He fulfilled the stereotype of footballers used to getting everything their own way and couldn’t cope if something happened to him he didn’t agree with. Feel like he showed his true colours and showed he’s a bit of a fool. Was disappointed and embarrassed for him.

interesting to hear rory talk about the bust up in the rome car park during the ryder cup and going in depth about what happened in that moment with cantlay and joe lacarva on the 18th green on saturday, what rory did on sunday in the singles was quite spectacular, he hammers sam burns with 7 birdies and an eagle, as shane lowry said even tiger woods in his 2000 prime would never have beaten rory mcilroy on that day.

I use Ian Wright as an example of how I can't understand racism. How can anyone not love this man is the 1st one? Then he's such a friendly bloke how would the colour of skin come into it? Then have you seen his passion when watching England? He's got to be one of the most loved people in our country. I was a little shocked when I found out that Roy Keane said one of his best football friends was Ian Wright. That was years ago. But Roy explained he said when we played each other we both wanted to kill each other for our teams. But we never held a grudge & we always shook hands & had a laugh after the match. He then said since he finished playing he found himself doing a lot of things with Wrighty & they got on fantastically well. He said it's all about respect his could you not respect Wrighty? I'll trust Roy Keanes judgement every day of the week.

That was brilliant, fascinating to hear Rory talk a bit about what actually goes through his mind in a tournament. Wrighty bang on as all ways. Don’t think Keano’s ever been that quiet. Great show GN, more of the same please.

I was with the Irish national team in the 90s during a friendly (for reasons I won''t mention). After the game, the whole team signed autographs on a sheet of paper the referee passed around. All the signatures were there ! Except, the next day, I realised Keane's was missing...

I remember seeing Roy Keane at the Blue Planet Aquarium back in 2000 with his family.
I was with my kids after coming back from Cork where I was working.
Our eyes met and I saw the look on his face because he knew I recognised him.
I would never have asked him for an autograph because he was on a family day out, even though I’m a huge United fan.
