They played their own instruments on most of their albums. I love seeing kids today get introduced to, and love, the music of my youth! I think that is one of the most underrated thing about Beastie Boys - when the legal hammer came down on sampling in the 90s, they were like "alright, we'll just start playing our own instruments and still make hits"
Beasties started as a New York punk band in about 1980. They caught wind of hip hop in its infancy when it made its way “uptown” . They fell in love with it and gave it a shot themselves. In 83 they made a song called Cookie-puss. It was a weird but sick instrumental track that made waves in New York clubs and was played by legit hip hop DJ’s of the time(including Bambaatta). As they developed into hip hop heads they hooked up with Russel Simmons and Rick Rubin and were a huge part in the rise of Def Jam records…. Their first record License to Ill (‘86) was dope quintessential 80’s Hip hop. Lot of groundbreaking things on that album (can’t get into it now). It was one of the highest selling rap records of all time until just recently. That said, they left Def jam, moved to California, did tons of psychedelic drugs, dug through tons of record crates, and eventually made what is considered a sampling masterpiece. Their 2nd album Pauls Boutique (‘89) still holds the record for most samples on an album. Beyond that, their vocals interplay and mesh on this album like no other rap group before or since. Many say it’s their best record…. …it was a commercial flop….. So they said fuck it. They built their own studio to hang out and record in, they started playing their instruments again and just started vibing, getting live in their studio just jamming and letting the tape roll…Out of these hang out/jam/recording sessions came their 3rd album Check Your Head (‘92). IMO the best Beastie Album of all time…It was absolutely ground breaking as it mixed punk rock and hip hop (and everything inbetween) like no other band had before or ever will……it’s a layered, eclectic, vintage and progressive at the same time, psychedelic, funky, jazzy, edgy, raw fucking record. A musical gumbo that is 100% true hip hop at its core. a mixtape when “mixtape” meant something different than today…. I recommend listening to that entire album from start to finish in one sitting…. The next album ILL Communication (which Sabotage is from) came out in ‘94 and was essentially an extension of the previous album and that production approach, and has some amazing stuff on it. Arguably their peak…. Every album after that had its own unique feel and were all progressive and incredible. Hello Nasty (‘98)is mind blowingly great. The beasties evolved like no other band in MUSIC…let alone hip hop. Truly one of the greatest American bands of all time, transcends classification but they for sure embody the true essence of Hip-Hop. Another aspect of their game are in fact their videos. Since 1980(HolySnappers) thru their last video (Too Many Rappers w/Nas) they made absolutely hilarious, endlessly cool, creative music videos…that’s a huge part of their thing…also they are AMAZING AMAZING live performers…(seen them live for almost every album). I highly recommend watching their live tv performances. I’ll let you go down the rabbit hole…so I’m gonna skip song recommendations…i suggest one whole album a week in chronological order. your mind will be blown. They have a very unique kind of autobiographical documentary that they did live it’s on Apple TV and is called Beastie Boys Story. Maybe watch that first or during your deep dive…. I left a comment (& now am reading others comments too) I suggested checking out the hits on their debut album and then put on "Paul's boutique" and start at the beginning and follow with "check your head" it's not like the Beastie boys ever put out anything that wasn't mind-blowingly excellent. They're definitely a must hear type of band. And one that you benefit from taking the journey from start to finish. Me and my friends loved them as a punk act but boy oh boy, , , what they did w/rap, , , , after their chart topping debut rap album, , , friggin changed music as we knew it. And we love them for doing so, , , , there is nothing quite like the Beastie Boys. Hell, even people (and musicians even) that I have known who claim to not like Rap music an look down their noses at me for saying that the Beastie Boys are just one of my favorite ever. In the 80s, I told my brother that the Beastie Boys started as a punk band and he laughed at me. Heard the punk Beastie Boys on KZSU Stanford college radio...playing some of the best music at the time in the Bay Area. kFJC a close second.

We did! 😁 MTV played almost exclusively music videos from 1982 to 2000. So we rushed home from school to 'watch' our favorite songs. Remember, there was no internet for the general public until the mid 90s and it wasn't even super useful until maybe 2001 or 2002, plus no social media until what, like 2008? So MTV was like our VEVO and RUclips. 💜

Beastie Boys are my favorite band of all time, they are fun, all the time, you hear them grow as humans from their 1986 debut album Licensed to Ill, which was the 1st rap album to go #1 on Billboard and has sold over 10 millions copies, to their sample heavy 1989 masterpiece Paul's Boutique, back to their instrument playing roots on 1992's Check Your Head with the ultimate banger So Whatcha Want, to this 1994 epic Ill Communication which featured Sabotage, then in 1998 put out Hello Nasty which featured Intergalactic....they just kept evolving and getting better as musicians and humanitarians and doing what they want, starting a music festival called the Tibetan Freedom Concert, they had their own record label Grand Royal, they put out a magazine, their final concert was headlining Bonnaroo in 2009, in 2011 they put out their last album Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2, and unfortunately MCA passed away from cancer in 2012 which ended the Beastie Boys as a active group. Their music videos are incredible, the samples they use educate you on other genres, its a whole Beastie universe. Dive in man. The Guitarist on this song was....Adam (Ad-Rock). Before the Beastie Boys was a hip-hop group they were a Hardcore Punk Rock group. Adam was a guitarist in another band, and when the Beastie's guitarist quit he stepped in. This was back when they were 14-17 in High School. The three of them changed sounds and ran into Russel Simmons, who was working to try to get a record setup for his brother Joseph "Run" Simmons with his little known band called Run DMC. They got helped with a few beats by this guy named Jason Mizell (a.k.a. Jam Master J).

One amazing thing about Beastie Boys is they always made their own music (after their first record). Sometimes sampling. Sometimes live recording (like Sabotage). Sometimes they'd record their own jams and then make beats out of them. Super inspiring group.
The Beastie Boys reinvented themselves… TWICE. That’s THREE ITERATIONS of the same three-person group. They went worldwide in late ‘86, breaking out with “Fight For Your Right To Party”, and all the other songs from the Licensed To Ill album. They were out of Brooklyn on the Def Jam label. They kind of played out the ‘80s NY rap scene, and moved out west, and you’ll hear the next version of the group with songs like “Whatcha Want”. But they didn’t really feel like themselves until they wrote this song, and this third version was them finally feeling comfortable in their own skins.
Beastie Boys came out in the 80’s but evolved and remained in the forefront of music right up until Ad-Rocks death in 2012. Apple has an amazing documentary about them and I highly recommend watching their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…. Im an 80s baby and I remember when this song came out in 1994 and I loved it so much. When the Beastie Boys released "Sabotage" as the first single off Ill Communication in early 1994, the song became a defining track of the '90s. Much of this is thanks to Spike Jonze's music video, which acted as a parody of '70s cop shows, and gave the song its iconic middle-finger attitude. In the rap genre that was dominated by African American acts, the Beasties stood out for their ethnicity - three white Jewish kids from Brooklyn, New York. Yauch was born to a Jewish mother and a Catholic father. He was raised Jewish. And although Im an 80s baby. I mist say the 1990s was the last of best decades. Now there was alot of great songs and movies that cane out in the early 2000s. But honestly the 90s was the BEST.

Been with the Beastie Boys since my mid teens. There are probably 4 threads of Beastie Boys. 1. Started out a hardcore band as young teens and then drop a thrash track in most albums. You’ve picked Sabotage which fits that or maybe Heart Attack Man (still cracks me up). 2. Minimal tracks tracks on Licensed to Ill like Hold it Now, Hit it. 3. Straight up sample heavy Hip Hop from Paul’s Boutique forward (both LA and NYC). Check out So Watcha Want or Get it Together. 4. Live instrumental funk/lounge band (could be my favourite) Check out Something’s Got to Give (the video is ace too). And for a Leftfield track check out Cookie Puss and the story behind it.

Damn, listen to Bestie Boys a lot in 20’s but never seen the videos. Was never around a tv. We where always going places of at work. Even when I was younger, never home, dad kicks us out of house 10am and didn’t come home until the street lights came on. Growing up in 70/80’s were the BEST. Dude, growing up through the 80s and 90s was the shit. New music videos from our favorite artists got us amped. These bands and rap groups would spend insane amounts of money making a crazy video to promote their latest release. Dont get me wrong, I do love the convenience of streaming music when it comes out now. But back in the day, seeing that new video drop and play in heavy rotation on MTV up until the release date of the new album? It got us stoked for it. Then the hunt of finding a record store that had your album in stock was always an adventure. I'm about to sound like an old man here, but I miss the old days. Lol.

This is from the 1990s, they are doing a retro video that mocks the 1970s detective style tv shows. Also, it’s before CGI, so they had to blow up a car in one take or build a large budget to blow up multiple cars. We didn’t have the internet back then so the only entertainment was on tv or in theaters. So yes, music videos were a new thin in 1981, and for 20 years people ran Home to watch new music videos. Note: The Beastie Boys write and play their own music when re-cording and worked with DJs to replicate what they did. (Mix-Master Mike bring their main DJ) but sometimes on stage they have multiple DJs.

I listened to a lot of different stuff growing up, mostly rock, metal and hiphop (leaning more towards metal, but still keeping my ears open to other music), but the very first album I ever purchased - as opposed to shared and copied, which we all did at school - was the Beastie Boys “Licensed to Ill”. Loved it and still do. If you like Sabotage you’ll probably like two of the hits from that album which also use electric guitar riffs - “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right to Party” and “No Sleep till Brooklyn”. Both classics! The album also has more old school hiphop tracks like “Brass Monkey”, and “Paul Revere”. I still know all the lyrics off by heart 😆

So this song came out when I was in middle school (mid 90s). I saw it on MTV and my mind was blown. I didn’t know at the time, but these were the same guys that I heard in the late 80s when I was a little kid. Their song “fight for your right” was a hit on MTV, and my uncle was in high school and he was into it. I didn’t give it much thought, but I remember the music video and song. Then I was in high school when intergalactic came out.
I’m biased, but the 90’s were amazing. So many good movies and music. Rap exploded, Grunge exploded. Pulp Fiction shook up the world of film. Boyz in the Hood. Menace to Society. Most of the artist from that era are still huge to this day. It’s a true testament to how wild the 90’s were. As a white kid from the suburbs, hearing NWA was a huge eye opener. I heard stories of a world I didn’t know existed. Great experience.

We did! 😁 MTV played almost exclusively music videos from 1982 to 2000. So we rushed home from school to 'watch' our favorite songs. Remember, there was no internet for the general public until the mid 90s and it wasn't even super useful until maybe 2001 or 2002, plus no social media until what, like 2008? So MTV was like our VEVO and RUclips. 💜

Beastie Boys are my favorite band of all time, they are fun, all the time, you hear them grow as humans from their 1986 debut album Licensed to Ill, which was the 1st rap album to go #1 on Billboard and has sold over 10 millions copies, to their sample heavy 1989 masterpiece Paul's Boutique, back to their instrument playing roots on 1992's Check Your Head with the ultimate banger So Whatcha Want, to this 1994 epic Ill Communication which featured Sabotage, then in 1998 put out Hello Nasty which featured Intergalactic....they just kept evolving and getting better as musicians and humanitarians and doing what they want, starting a music festival called the Tibetan Freedom Concert, they had their own record label Grand Royal, they put out a magazine, their final concert was headlining Bonnaroo in 2009, in 2011 they put out their last album Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2, and unfortunately MCA passed away from cancer in 2012 which ended the Beastie Boys as a active group. Their music videos are incredible, the samples they use educate you on other genres, its a whole Beastie universe. Dive in man. The Guitarist on this song was....Adam (Ad-Rock). Before the Beastie Boys was a hip-hop group they were a Hardcore Punk Rock group. Adam was a guitarist in another band, and when the Beastie's guitarist quit he stepped in. This was back when they were 14-17 in High School. The three of them changed sounds and ran into Russel Simmons, who was working to try to get a record setup for his brother Joseph "Run" Simmons with his little known band called Run DMC. They got helped with a few beats by this guy named Jason Mizell (a.k.a. Jam Master J).

The Beastie Boys were a big fan of TV and cult films from the 60s and 70s. Intergalactic was fashioned after the Japanese monster films from that era. This video is inspired by various cop TV shows from the 70s like "Starsky and Hutch" and "Baretta." They did another video. "Body Movin" which was inspired by Mario Bava's "Danger: Diabolik" made in 1968.

One amazing thing about Beastie Boys is they always made their own music (after their first record). Sometimes sampling. Sometimes live recording (like Sabotage). Sometimes they'd record their own jams and then make beats out of them.

The Beastie Boys reinvented themselves… TWICE. That’s THREE ITERATIONS of the same three-person group. They went worldwide in late ‘86, breaking out with “Fight For Your Right To Party”, and all the other songs from the Licensed To Ill album. They were out of Brooklyn on the Def Jam label. They kind of played out the ‘80s NY rap scene, and moved out west, and you’ll hear the next version of the group with songs like “Whatcha Want”. But they didn’t really feel like themselves until they wrote this song, and this third version was them finally feeling comfortable in their own skins.

Beastie Boys came out in the 80’s but evolved and remained in the forefront of music right up until Ad-Rocks death in 2012. Apple has an amazing documentary about them and I highly recommend watching their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…. Where you might also learn LL Cool J used to be an awesome rapper before he was a NCIS actor….

Im an 80s baby and I remember when this song came out in 1994 and I loved it so much.
When the Beastie Boys released "Sabotage" as the first single off Ill Communication in early 1994, the song became a defining track of the '90s. Much of this is thanks to Spike Jonze's music video, which acted as a parody of '70s cop shows, and gave the song its iconic middle-finger attitude.
In the rap genre that was dominated by African American acts, the Beasties stood out for their ethnicity - three white Jewish kids from Brooklyn, New York. Yauch was born to a Jewish mother and a Catholic father. He was raised Jewish.
And although Im an 80s baby. I mist say the 1990s was the last of best decades.

Dude, growing up through the 80s and 90s was the shit. New music videos from our favorite artists got us amped. These bands and rap groups would spend insane amounts of money making a crazy video to promote their latest release. Dont get me wrong, I do love the convenience of streaming music when it comes out now. But back in the day, seeing that new video drop and play in heavy rotation on MTV up until the release date of the new album? It got us stoked for it. Then the hunt of finding a record store that had your album in stock was always an adventure. I'm about to sound like an old man here, but I miss the old days. Lol.

I listened to a lot of different stuff growing up, mostly rock, metal and hiphop (leaning more towards metal, but still keeping my ears open to other music), but the very first album I ever purchased - as opposed to shared and copied, which we all did at school - was the Beastie Boys “Licensed to Ill”. Loved it and still do. If you like Sabotage you’ll probably like two of the hits from that album which also use electric guitar riffs - “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right to Party” and “No Sleep till Brooklyn”. Both classics! The album also has more old school hiphop tracks like “Brass Monkey”, and “Paul Revere”. I still know all the lyrics off by heart 😆

So this song came out when I was in middle school (mid 90s). I saw it on MTV and my mind was blown. I didn’t know at the time, but these were the same guys that I heard in the late 80s when I was a little kid. Their song “fight for your right” was a hit on MTV, and my uncle was in high school and he was into it. I didn’t give it much thought, but I remember the music video and song.
Then I was in high school when intergalactic came out.
I’m biased, but the 90’s were amazing. So many good movies and music. Rap exploded, Grunge exploded. Pulp Fiction shook up the world of film. Boyz in the Hood. Menace to Society.
Most of the artist from that era are still huge to this day. It’s a true testament to how wild the 90’s were.
As a white kid from the suburbs, hearing NWA was a huge eye opener. I heard stories of a world I didn’t know existed. Great experience.
