Beaumont California, one of the worst places to live.
Just on the city side of debating whether to call it a town or a city. Hotter than hades ex-wife, broker than a gambler playing the slots at a truck stop, and dustier than the american dust bowl... It is picturesque though, in that dystopian sort of way.
Though the city is thriving compared to the town of rippley ca. Which is just on the town side of the same matrix. Also near where I try to shoot feathers out of the sky! (Dove hunting)

These ultra cyclists are unbelievable. I would crumble from the sleep deprivation after 2 days. On my last holiday, I met a guy from Italy who rides around Europe very slowly but consistently. He got up at 6 am and started riding whilst I had to sleep until 8 but then always reeled him in after a few hours and we rode the rest together. The beautiful variety of cycling.

I had the honor of riding with Lael Wilcox last Saturday. She has an incredible joyful attitude and was quick to stop and talk with young children, as well as a big smile and wave to any cyclist she sees. She has been self supported throughout much of this journey. She reminds me much of a friend, Bonnie Allison whom raced RAAM many years ago. This type effort requires extreme will and determination!
    Cheers to LAEL

New York State’s 1200-km Empire State Trailway (on which I’m riding at this moment) is truly beautiful, if also uneven. At that length, you are bound to go past both idyllic marshes and drab, decayed towns of our Rust Belt. I still love it all.

Has Mark seen what Lachlan did on the Tour Divide? It's not around the world, sure, but Lachlans approach was very structured and utterly successful. And that's what LMs magic is all about. He broke the TD record in an almost casual way, while exactly knowing what he could take to get where he was headed. Lachlan is a rider that can ride for 48 hours straight while being faster than anyone else. He is the guy to which getting up in the morning and riding till evening is taking the easy route. I think he can do it and I think he can smash the record. On an attempt like this, there always is luck involved, but if there ever was a rider that was capable of doing it, it's Lachy.

To protect your rims from public transport bike racks, I carry a short piece of garden hose cut open length wise to put in between.
Stiff enough to stay on your rim, thick enough to protect it and small enough to fit in your pocket/saddlebag.
Should work better than Haribos. Plus, you then can eat your Haribos while on the train.

There really need to be different records for Supported and Unsupported distance records.
Lael appears to be "semi-supported". She doesn't have a RV with a crew following behind with everything including food and water like Mark, and is carrying her own spares and gear, but does have her wife doing social media/photography and taking care of sleeping accommodations at hotels and etc.

    • @out_spocken
      @out_spocken 5 месяцев назад +2

Agreed. Unsupported or supporter. Simple. I mean it's hard to prove unsupported given you can be communicating with someone remotely for organizing accom while you ride...but maybe it's a case of not having anyone carrying anything you need?
Difficult. But huge difference in energy being used on unsupported vs supported agreed.

Mark Beaumont is the real deal. His comments are very straight talking and to the point. Love listening to his thoughts.
It's also worth pointing out that riding faster is only effective up to a point, because riding faster means you're burning disproportionately more calories, and the digestion system will be the fundamental bottleneck, not your FTP or Z2 power.
Being a larger rider and having more fat reserves to make use of seems like a better initial condition than being in WT shape and leanness, especially when considering the immune and hormonal systems.
Lachlan is probably the best and most experienced WT rider to try this kind of feat, but I do wonder whether his body will hold up to the rigors of 2m+.

Hey, I don't have any friends that like cycling so I figured I'd share this with you guy. I got some cycling shoe! They are clipless shoes! I wear a size 17 in US which is a 52 or so in EU and finding anything that has fit my feat has been a pain in the butt. However I've been on a health journey (appreciating the helpful guidance from Dan along the way) and I'm down 50 pounds (which is 22.7kg or 3.6 stone which is a fun measurement) and I found that I can fit into size 16 running shoes which is a 50.5. So I figured I'd try to find some cycling shoes and after going to a couple of local stores, no dice there, I found a pair of 50s online. They came 2 days ago and fit!!! I'm so pumped about it. I've got clipless pedals coming in the mail tomorrow!
I know this isn't really what this comment section is for but I didn't have any where else to share it. Love you guys at GCN for making feel less alone in the cycling world!

You make the argument that creating community rides on the model of Park Run will end up being competitive. Here are a couple of suggestions to reduce this risk. 1) Do not time individual riders. 2) Do not provide a list of finishers by place 3) Remind participants at the beginning of each ride that "It is not a race". If participants want to keep track of their own time, it's up to them.

Lachlan is showtime and I think he'll do great and with routes not being the same, let his stand on its own, not really fair to compare. Certainly quite a training ride for the next Unbound, if nothing else. 😀

With respect to the Blue Ridge Parkway. 20 years ago, you would not have seen a bike. However, in the past few years, cities like Asheville (sitting on the park way)in North Carolina have set up bike lanes and free bike fix stations. I, with my son, vacationed this summer in asheville with our bikes and road in the Blue Ridge. It's fantastic to see bikes in groups and solo on this stunning mountain road. We will be back for sure.

Gravel existed, but it was just a form of mountain bike race. When I raced XC in Alaska, some of the longer races we did were on gravel roads; although I would NOT want to have been on a gravel bike for them due to the washboard. Washboard is BRUTAL and really make suspension forks necessary.

re: the best routes as measured by instagrams/km -- Si is right, it's probably measuring the population density and/or rider density of the broader area, multiplied by the proportion of instagram users. I think you'd have to also set them up as Strava segments and then check for the number of riders completing the segment/route.
Imagine two routes: On route one, ten people a year ride a 10km route and each of them take 10 pictures each, you end up with 10 pics/km. On route two, a thousand people a year ride a different 1km route and of those thousand, one in ten of those take 1 picture, you get 100 pics/km. Yet, I'd hazard a guess that the _first_ one is far more picturesque.

Back in his day it was glass jars with metal lids and he mounted them on a rotating slat arrangement to maximize space efficiency. I am well on the way with my plastic sourkraut jugs at the rate of about 2/ month. Handy and very good for the microbiome too!

Oh ffs it's nothing at all like riding an ebike. What about picking a day where the wind helps? Is that cheating or just riding In favourable conditions? Same with sweeping corners and spotters. It's smart and in fact safe. Drafting sure...doesn't seem right..but everyone does that everywhere.
You can do the same thing if you want. Otherwise just ignore KOMs

There used to be a few short rides here in the evening just for fun. They did become races for some of us, but that was never a problem. What ruined them was people stopping at bars along the way and then riding drunk plus the rides became too popular and so uncontrollable.
