French drivers were top notch and tarmac specialists in all racing series for decades.
The Donegal international rally is regarded as the biggest in Ireland. It's a 3 day event with some of the best rally stages in the world. It has attracted some top drivers through the years including Ari Vatenen, Jimmy, Colin and Alistair McRae, Craig Breen and even Ken Block. The footage is from the start of the Knockalla stage . You should watch some onboard footage of that stage.

When I used to live at home when I was like 19 or 20, I would come home full of drink and drunk as a skunk (I'm Irish) and it could be 3 or 4am and I would turn on my laptop and watch Rally Ireland video full blast. My father used to go mental over it, but as he said himself, "I'm just glad you made it home" he never said that. He normally said "Turn that shit down or i'll ram that computer up your hole"

Seb Leob contested this rally ahead of that year's WRC-counting Rally Ireland. Irish roads are unlike any others and, though Loeb was, is and probably always will be the greatest asphalt rally driver ever, he still needed some serious prep.
Even though he'd never seen the roads before, he still won by 2 mins from one of the best British drivers of the time. The fastest Irish driver was nearly 6 minutes behind Loeb. The man operated on an entirely different level.

Those Citroén C4's that you thought were more modern looking came out in 2004 😂Citroén are known for polarising designs that then other companies just copy that's why they always look "modern"
I have a 2008 model of the 5 door version of that Citroén C4, most reliable, most fun, and best car I ever owned, bought it new in 2008, never thought I'd keep a car 20 years but I'm nearly there now.
The Prodrive Subaru's had a unique anti-lag system nicknamed the rocket. Anti-lag works by igniting unburnt fuel by injecting air into a hot exhaust manifold to spool the large turbo quickly. The Subaru WRC cars were unique because they did this with a combustion chamber after the manifold that resembled something closer to a jet engine without a fuel injection system (though from the outside it looked like a little rocket hence the name). This system allowed the Subaru's to spool their turbo's almost instantly at IDLE, which is why most of the Subaru's (The WRC cars, the ones with the body kits and cool wing) launched without building any revs. It was a clever system that got around strict rules that banned the air injection from the turbo's wastegate (or BOV) into the exhaust manifold, which were typical of antilag systems of that era of rally. Of course the system was eventually banned.

Loeb did Donegal in 2007 as prep & development for Rally Ireland, the C4 was quite new after replacing the Xsara WRC & they needed to set up the suspension for the Irish roads, Irish tarmac settings are very different from normal tarmac suspension settings. Great vid as always Ian

I had a red '02 ZX3. I still miss that car. Lowered by 1.5 inches with upgraded struts and shocks, strut and shock tower bracing, CIA, 4 to 1 header and HKS exhaust.
Hey, I just found an interesting video from 1963. It's a road-trip from central London to Bath, filmed from an old MK2 Jaguar. It's pretty wild, the roads have much less signs and lane indications, often it seems like it's every man for himself.. there's some highly dangerous roads and the motorway has no speed limit yet, so that leads to some interesting overtaking etiquette. It's uploaded by Maxustaxus and called " London to Bath in a MK II Jaguar in 1963 with George Eyles, F231".

The WRC Corolla driven by one Mr Carlos Sainz Snr. Who of course is the father of current F1 driver, Carlos Sainz Jnr. What a machine, short wheelbase, great engine, very reliable car.

Btw, generally, the pronounciation of "oe" is like the Norwegian "Ø", but if you look that up, most of the phonetic "translations" are wrong.
If you look up Loeb for example, the guy says LOBE, which is just completely wrong.
Ø is closer to "uh", as in "uuh what`s that?"
It`s hard to explain, but it`s not LOBE, think "the" and "uh" , so "Luubh" and you`ll be closer (:

Martin Schanche is more known for his Rallycross carrier!! He also drove the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Boring Era in WRC, Leob was too fast for anyone else. 7 titles in a row IIRC(I didn't, it was 9 apparently).. He entered the Donegal rally as prep for the WRC event later that year

Great timing, The rally was just on over the wekend, I live in the town it's based from.. It's not a WRC event but still has a massive entry list of top end machines from local, national and international competitors. And then there are all the people that come to town for the weekend.
For an idea of how tight the stages can get, there was a great on-board from 98 I think of Andrew Nesbitt going up Knockalla.. Co-driver sounds a bit funny too but it's a beautiful hillclimb up a coastal road which turnes into super tight country lanes. Well worth a look.
