      Me too. As a co-driver back in the 80s and 90s we really depended on good map skills and pacenote skills. I once navigated on a road rally for a very nice guy who's best result was around 30th overall. We were second overall on a national championship night rally before the car broke just after halfway and it was the first time he'd been on pacenotes, Co-drivers can make a huge difference, especially at night.

    • @sugoruyo
      @sugoruyo 3 месяца назад

      As a former driver I have to say the navigators and race marshalls are the unsung heroes of the rally world. I mostly drove alone on the hill climbs but I learned first hand that a good navigator can make the difference between life and death.

  • @rexoid0800
    @rexoid0800 3 месяца назад

    When you realise that this is pretty standard as rally onboards go, you really can't comprehend how fast the really fast drivers are and how in tune with the car and listening to the pacenotes. It is poetry in motion in the most ultimate way. One mistake and that is the end. Real bravery.

    There’s a possibility the guy “just chillin” could have been a race marshal. Night rallies are So cool. The driver is basically limited to what he can see in the head lights. His co-driver is how he knows where he’s going. You also have to note he’s travelling at 90 + mph through some of theses sections!

    Normally they practice the track before, go through by car and the copilot/navigator makes notices to every curve or uneven part on the track and read it during race to the pilot. Otherwise it would not be possible to drive so fast... 🙂

    USA missed out in early days of ralling principally due to the size of vehicles produced by USA car manufactories . Most were like floating bedrooms . BIG is BETTER . You could & I have had a party in the ' YANK TANK ' .
    Rally cars are NEAT NIMBLE nice & full of GET UP & GO GRUNT ! Rally , is for the living who have far better reflex , eyesight , nerves , super quick thinking & have a passion for excitement . The USA would think it was a good idea on a nice evening to drive to the loczal drive in & wrap your arms & legs around another person .
    Rally drivers had the idea to & drive through the bush wrapping their arms about the steering wheel & legs/feet about the go peddle , brake peddle & pray they would not scratch their cars paint job .
    Two versions of a good night out .

    I don't know how it is elsewhere, but my experience across the Czech Republic is that animals migrate in the morning soon after dawn and in the evening, shortly after dark. In the evening, they migrate to a safe place, or to a place where you can hunt.
    In the morning, they migrate from safe places to somewhere near water. For example, my sister knew that in the winter at 7.30 a.m. three wild boars would be running on a particular stretch of road. So she kept an eye on the clock, and when she happened to be in this place at that time, she preferred to stop and go outside to look around. Usually at that moment the wild boars ran out and she had a great spectacle. Many drivers experience the same here, and not only with wild boars.
    For example, it happened to me that I was afraid that I ran over a pheasant, so I stop, get out of the car and look where the pheasant is, and at that moment a deer ran into my stationary car. And the deer looked pissed at me, like I was to blame! Our wild animals are usually funny, just don't piss them off. :)

    I wonder, since you have glasses too: do you ever feel truly confident in a car? Ever since I got mine, I never really did. Before, I was confident. Then I noticed I needed them. Age is a cruel master. Since, I always leave a margin. I just don’t trust any artificial aid, be it glasses or keep-your-lane systems or complete autonomous driving, it’s just no.

    just to give you some perspective on speed, 120-130kmh is the most common highway speed limit in all europe, so, you can really appreciate how amazingly fast those machines can take the turns in a narrow, twisty and bumpy road

    Wait until you see it at night on snow
    Also stadium racing where they race against each other in stadium
    Knock out races and have bridges dirt and some even have pavement mix
    We used to get this live on TV here in Australia 🇦🇺 during 70 / 80s in the hay day of world rally
    Then for some reason the broadcast stopped
    I'm guessing because more local racing took over like v8 super cars amongst others type here
    Water skiing and power boat racing used to be on as well
    Without all other sports footy cricket soccer basketball ball net ball surfing
    As you see lots of sports in competition and more locally
    Sad loved watching it
    Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

    Brother...when you are driving in a rally stage you don't think, you just do. You just drive. And if you are the codriver you just sing the pace notes. Rally isn't a sport you can stop to think.

    The risk of wildlife runniing out on the road is definitely there. Wild boar and deer mainly (hitting a wild boar is like hitting a brick wall btw). To avoid wildlife collisions, we are taught to slow down, use all the lights we have and have "split focus" on the sides of the road. Except for the very good light, these guys are not going for that advice, for sure. :)

    Driving a local road in Cornwall. Sped up to make viewing less painful, but indicative of normal driving conditions (in fact better than normal conditions). It helps to have some knowledge of the road. ruclips.net/video/ppsSvM_KWow/видео.html

    It's crazy until you realize that they do it all the time. They know the routes by heart and that's the only way to fight for the podium. Great route knowledge. Let's remember the blind people. They know where to go because they know by heart a lot of places they've never seen or saw a long time ago.

    Ian don't be afraid. With the very loud noise, and the'bang' of cars, it's very rare to cross some of them.
    And before the official competition cars, there are 1 or 2 opening cars (rally cars most of the time) to check the road and prevent major change or danger on the road which will not appear in copilot notes.
    And most of the area there are fans here 1 or 2 or 3 hours before the run. So wildlife stay away.

    Easly WRC should be top motorsport discipline, when we consider the sheer amunt of knowledgez skill and confidence, that every driver and co-pilot have to develop, in order to reach the finish in one piece on somewhat decent position. Road surface - whatever the road was made off, weather - whatever currently is falling from the sky, in the sun or at night...
