  • The Otaru Snow Light Path Festival was the highlight of my Hokkaido trip! Magical, enchanting and beautiful ice lamps along the canal in the snow.
The Snow Light Path Festival takes place at the start of February in Otaru, a town on the coast in Hokkaido, Japan. It's only 30 minutes from Sapporo by train, so you can easily go on a day trip from Sapporo. There are 3 sites: the town centre, Asarigawa Hot Springs and Tenguyama, which is up a mountain ropeway. We went to the town centre site, which has two main areas: along the canal with the warehouses and the Temiyasen former railway line. It starts at about 5:30pm as it gets dark, with illuminations until 9pm. There's an amazing variety of snow lamps and displays. It's so creative and magical! It lasts for 10 days and overlaps with the Sapporo Snow Festival, so you can visit them both in the same trip. In 2020, the Otaru snow light festival will be on 8-16 February 2020.

If you find yourself in winter conditions again. Try putting your electronics in the inside pockets of your coats. Body heat will slow down how quickly your batteries die. Dress in layers to even better effect, plus it will help regulate your temperature, get too hot take a layer off, get too cold put it back on. Lastly, take a portable battery to recharge from and keep that close to the body until your ready to use it. Tips from a Canadian who lives in a place where it gets to minus 40 in the winter.
Cheers and well done with the videos, my Son and I always enjoy them :)

A wonderful upload!!!! Those snow sculptures are hand-crafted, and the ambience is magical. I was really impressed by the ice log house made of hand-made ice logs! True that the Otaru Snow Fest has more home-made feel to it than the snow fest in Sapporo. I would love to visit there! As always, your vlogs are so informative!

    Yeah !
The new video has come !
I didn't know this Otaru snow path festival. It's my big mistake.
But, I could know this festival by your video !
    Thank you so much !
It is very beautiful, charming, and impressive !
Sapporo snow festival is very popular.
But, I felt, that I interest Otaru snow path festival than Sapporo snow festival.
Just now, I decided, I will go to Hokkaido on next February !
And, I will see both Otaru and Sapporo festival !
Thank you for fun video and nice information.
    I have some information too.
There is the small museum at end of former railway Temiya line.
Former cash career car of Japan national bank is conserved at that.
This cash career car was hidden a existence for security.
If you have a interest, please visit to that on next visit.
I'm looking forward your next video.
    Please enjoy !

Thanks for the info! :-) I'm glad you decided to visit Sapporo and Otaru! I wonder what other snow festivals there are! :-) When I was planning my trip, I thought the Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival looks beautiful - but it was difficult to visit from Sapporo. Maybe one day I'll go! :-)

Yes, Sounkyo is difficult with one day trip from Sapporo.
And, highlight of Sounkyo ice fall festival is light-up at night.
So, if you watch that light-up, unable to one day trip from Sapporo.
Probably, you know, there is a famous hotsprings in Sounkyo.
I recommend you stay Sounkyo-Onsen hotel or Ryokan for one night.
      Please enjoy !

Don't know if you ever watch Japanese dramas, but there is one called Massan that is loosely based on the history of Nikka whiskey with Rita and Masataka Taketsuru (known as the father of Japanese whiskey). It's like 150 episodes, but each episode are only 15 minutes long.

Have you -a girl- ever traveled all by yourself in Japan? How safe is it? What about to more remote parts? Like the Oki islands?

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  5 лет назад +1

I haven't travelled by myself, but a lot of people do (lots have commented on my videos). It's a pretty safe place - crime levels are low, and I've seen videos from people who live in Japan (female) who feel safe to walk around alone at night. I often feel unsafe here in the UK, but in Japan I don't often have that feeling. Can't really say about remote areas but I believe it's the same all around Japan - I've heard that people are friendly in the countryside as well.
