After getting this car, I felt a little insecure about it because of all the hate that the prius name has gotten over the years. People like your remind of why I got it in the first place. Its awesome for the its utility and affordability. On top of that, its one of the most reliable (if not the most) cars out there. I've had mine for almost 2 years and have just been loving it more and more because it just doesn't cost me anything to run it other than gas and oil changes every once and a while. I'll be following along on your camper build! keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment Roy! I am really surprised with how many people love this thing and what I’m doing with it. I feel the same way, I bought it with 180k on the clock and you would never know it. Definitely the most solid vehicle I have ever owned not to mention getting 50mpg is a dream come true.

I've owned everything from a Tacoma, Tundra, Venza, pretty much everything under the Toyota moniker, and let me tell you...I love my 2013 Prius, best car ever. Yes, it sucks so many people have this "I hate hybrids" attitude, but screw them! If you were to see me walking down the street, I definitely don't fit the Prius look, I look like I should have a lifted truck or a motorcycle. lol

I need to get a bumper sticker that says I'm not a tree hugger, I'm just cheap! I own a Prius Prime. Love this idea. Not sure if I'm brave enough to take the seats out. I have been looking at trailers, suv, and trucks. My car is paid for, why would I want to go in debt again just to travel? I'm going to work with what I got and maybe buy a small trailer for stuff.

I have owned everything Toyota from the MR2 to a Tacoma, Venza, Tundra, I currently have a Prius and LOVE IT! Basically, like you, I watched 100s of RUclips videos on different vehicles, and the Prius was hands down, the best car for traveling. I have traveled many times and slept in my car, zero issues, I would recommend rain deflectors, so you can keep the windows slightly open at night while sleeping and not worry about condensation. Great video sir

I have done a lot of Prius camping. I like this idea of replacing the rear seats with a flat storage box, because it's going to free up the passenger front seat. Also it provides a superior sleeping surface compared to folded down seats. Basically, you're strategy is to say, "hey I'm going on a camping adventure. Why am I hauling around this mostly uncomfortable couch??"

Be sure to keep the battery vent filter (level at backseat passenger side tricep height) especially with your dog being a shedder. The big battery hates getting overheated.

Slide your seats all the way forward. Remove head rest and your seats will lay even to meet your back seat. Many people do not know this . Whats really cool, is if you sit in the rear seat, say on the passenger side. The back of your seat becomes like a recliner. Great for just relaxing while on the road. Much more comfortable than the front seat just leaned back. You actually are propping your feet up for the ultimate in comfort. Me personally id have left one seat just for this reason alone. But i do like the idea of maybe taking one out and creating a storage area there. Essentially making it a 3 seater. But, there is rhe option of a hutch with an insert, and adding a cargo insert for extras.. im just spoiled by the built in recliner. Great for naps or just reading a book.

I lived out of my Prius for about 18 months. I bought some long, black shower curtain cloth and put some command hooks above every window and would just hang the curtains up when I slept in it. For the windshield, I had a retractable Sun visor that Velcroed into place. Bought another retractable visor for the rear hatch; mounted at the top and put a Velcro strip on the bottom end so when it was time to sleep, I’d just pull it down and Velcro it into place.

    Great video.
I'm selling my 1996 diesel Sun Voiger. It was big and fun, but it has become an issue for many reasons.
My Prius, on the other hand, offers a different avenue for exploring the outdoors. I always used it as a power supply while camping in Yosemite.
I'll add another 12v battery or two in parallel (the same type of battery) for more capacity, along with a pure sinewave inverter and an outdoor kitchen (fridge, inductive stove, and microwave) in the rear hitch.
Other things to add would be more insulation, a flexible solar panel on the roof, a tent for the rear hatchback when camping and a 2" lift kit with more robust springs to access forest service roads.
All this will affect the aerodynamics and mileage, but I'll wait to see how that ends.
    The Prius is a workhorse.

The generator on wheels idea is what sold me, too. My V is going to be a road home for a while, then move up to an electric transit - as soon as they're ready. If Tesla put out a van - I'd be in one! At least wishing. Wish I had the skill you do!

    • @Nemo-yn1sp
      @Nemo-yn1sp 3 года назад

@@tunedime The seat is screwed up the way it slants so far back/down and is not adjustable. Didn't happen at first, but soon my right side started having issues - neck, shoulders, lower back, sciatica. Tried all sorts of fixes, even an upholsterer (who made it worse, though I specifically said make the bottom level, take out the slope). Got to the point where I was crying to drive.
In March, I toughed it out, drove 3x in 6 days about an hour each day and after the third day, woke up in such pain I could hardly walk. Spent over a week mostly in bed til I could get to my acupuncture doc (couldn't drive to get there). Really bummed - looked for a long time for that car, really wanted to hit the road in it, only had it 6 months. $$$Lost, too. Discovered that others have had problems, too.
I have a 04 4Runner and had an 04 Camry before the V, no issue but the seats do have hard bumps under them. Had a 2013 Camry Hybrid for a week (Carvana gives you a week and three tries at a car), seat had the same bumps under, sat in/drove several newer Toyotas. Miserable seats if not electric.

I'm taking a 1993 Delica Star Wagon L300 turbo diesel back to the states from Japan using a military TMO move, which I plan on converting for van life. My mom was pissed because she apparently was gonna give me her old 2007 prius I learned to drive in for christmas when I to home to live with them for a year.
I'm thinking of just putting that delica into long term storage for that year and taking the prius anyway to save money. My deli really is my dream car, but the prius would be a much better car to daily drive on... And, the more research I do, the more I think I can make it do what I want for that year. I'm going to colorado, and my plan was to go car camping up in the mountains on weekends. And budget wise, I could build put the prius to do that a lot quicker and cheaper than the delica. I plan on safari-ing it. You can get about 2 inches of lift and all terrain tires on one for pretty cheap, and the bed, battery, and AC system are already better than what you see in a lot of RVs, already from the factory. Combine all this with front wheel drive, a skid plate, a winch, and practice some welding making a custom bullbar with tow loops and some LED lights, and... Well, it wont be as good as a 4WD or AWD vehicle for offroading, but with some good driving, it should get through most trails in the local rockies just fine, without bottoming out all the time like we used to.
Anyway, something else I want to do, and the reason I bring this up, is if youre interested, there's a cool upgrade you can get. Theres 3 levels of battery upgrade you can get, from 1,000 to 3,000 dollars, that replace the spare tire with an extra battery, add a house charging port, and add compatability with wiring in solar panels. Also, it can be used to force the prius to drive purely as an EV under 40 mph. So if you want to get some of that fuel economy back from things weighing you down, like dragging a trailer, that's a great option.
Also, I like the prius... But hated driving in it. Its so political that even the mere sight of one had rollin coal modded to hell truck drivers tailgating me all the way to 20 over even though I stick to the slow lane, deciding that's not good enough, finally availing themselves of the passing lane, then try to run me off the road, while flipping me off and calling me a c#$%... And I was just a 17 year old kid borrowing his mom's car because I was too poor to get my own mind you. Kinda f@#$ed up, Colorado is a beautiful state, but I honestly wouldnt care if the residents got glassed. Half the reason I wanna bubbafy mine is just so people won't recognize it as a prius, and f@#$ right off.
Long term, there's a company that's set to finally release some commercially available in-wheel electric motors in 2023, that are fairly adaptable to legacy wheel hardware. My ultimate dream is to hybridize my Delica, and squeeze out some good gas mileage out of a bigger older van.

Either is fine, but I'd recommend a regular Prius, or the Prime. The v (small v, for versatile, the wagon....not big V for trim level 5) is the only Prius I've driven which I'd hoped to like, but didn't. It doesn't have the quickness of a regular Prius. I actually felt sorry for it when I put my foot to the floor and it didn't take off anywhere near like a regular Prius. I currently have a 2005 Prius that I love but barely use since getting my 2017 Prius Prime, which you can optionally plug in. The Prime is a real wolf in sheep's clothing, and all the advantages of a Prius are 10x better in a Prime. By the time the engine kicks on when you sleep in it, it is time to get up anyway. Usually over 8 hours of heat or AC before the motor kicks on to recharge. More like 15 hours in fall or spring. 6-8 hours when it was a 100 degree day and only dropped to the really muggy dewpoint of 75 degrees overnight while you're sleeping in perfect AC comfort. Likewise when heating to 70 when it's 0 out. (Obviously degrees F). The compromise in the Prime is the slightly higher cargo deck, and no cargo space under it, no spare tire. So much less storage and a bit less headroom above the bed, but still enough. Room for a 50 liter compressor fridge behind the passenger seat, perfect height to level your bed. Unlike any van or RV, I can comfortably drive my Prime 900+ miles per day to get where I'm going, solo. You can set the cruise control above 100mph and it still isn't straining. One day I cruised 94mph almost all day long out west, burning just under 3 gallons an hour. 2 gallons an hour got me 84mph with no wind. 1 gallon per hour 61mpg at 61mph. 1/2 gallon per hour about 80mpg at 40mph. Incredible car. It also outruns much faster cars in big mountains and/or long stretches of hairpin turns. I push them until their brakes are almost on fire, then blow them away when they're defenseless, my brakes are warmed up but nowhere near overheated, due to most braking being regenerative rather than friction. Snake River Canyon near Globe, Arizona was epic. Somewhere out there, are Mustang GT, Maxima, and lowered/chipped Accord owners still shaking their heads that a Prius blew them away. Only the Accord didn't give up. So I let him catch up the mile I got ahead of him. Then when he was 50 yards behind me and pulling out to pass, I put a quarter mile back on him and baited him to try again. He didn't take the bait twice. So I put a mile on him and returned to more reasonable speeds than going 45-85-45 for each 20-25mph turn that seemed to be about every 1/4 mile apart. Anyone who thinks a Prius is not a great car for car enthusiasts, is wrong. Despite all the fast driving and never plugging it in on that 8338 mile trip, plus extreme AC usage, just using it as a hybrid I averaged 46.8mpg on that trip. When you can drive a car like Mario Andretti for a month and average 47mpg, that's my kind of car. Lifetime, I have 80K on it and average mpg is 61.2mpg including that trip, so without the trip, quite a bit higher.

I’m 6’2 and lived out of my 06 Prius for almost 18 months. It’s plenty big imo. The Prius gets a lot of hate for being a small car but there’s plenty of room inside of it. Not a while let of wasted space in the Prius.

Very impressive! I have the V, which has even more head room. Only problem. My wife and I are old! She’s 74 ,I’m 78. I don’t think she could crawl into the car to sleep. But, I love your adaptation. Congrats.

Yeah when ppl say to me "a Prius, are you crazy" I have 2 words: climate control. That's what sold me.
And I've been having the same idea as you to cover bed platform: something waterproof, easy clean and pliable that won't kill your knees to crawl on. But I'd prefer rubber matting - a bit less toxic; and I'd keep it whole (wouldn't cut seams) cos spills happen and I'd rather have to roll it back to access drawers underneath than the possibility of getting moisture on the hybrid battery.
But all good and I love your attitude 🤗

How do you get air to the Hybrid traction battery? It needs the air to stay cool.

you can take the spare tire and move it the middle oi the back seat box and gain even more convenient back hatch space.

Good job! I was looking at buying my buddies 2014 Prius for hauling transmissions for full size chevy silverado pickups, but it did not have enough height clearance for the bell housing of the transmission with the seats folded down. That is why I was torn between the Hond Fit/Jazz and the Prius. With those back seats torn out, it looks like you have enough room for an engine or transmission.

Its also important for people to understand the prius transmission is not the CVT belt driven transmission. Those are horrible and I would not recommend towing anything with a belt driven transmission. just going to strip out the belt and ruin the whole transmission. The prius transmission is gear driven with an electric motor. They are so robust that oftentimes there is no transmission fluid even in there at all and they still run for years with no problem. I honestly don't understand why no one else is copying the design.
