The intro was actually funny. The first seconds I thought to myself "Oh no... Not another intro..." But then I was actually enjoying it. And yes, it was funny :)
If I may, you should always first disconnect the stop awitch in a no-spark situation as it very often the cause, thus possibly saving you a lot of time and frustration in solving the issue. Keep safe and be merry !
I just picked up at 50hp version that stopped working 11 years ago so I should have that on the channel soon. It looks so similar but bigger, heavier and 4 cylinders
Man, I’m impressed. You sure are getting lucky with this lineup. It definitely would not go like this for me if I bought a bunch of random outboards. Ha. I’ve never worked on any of that vintage. Nice that one was fogged and carb cleaned. Maybe it was running when it was put in storage? Looking forward to the next episode.
hey Mark, thanks for watching and for the feedback, the one I am filming today is the 10hp evinrude “crusty crab” and I think this one is going to be a handful! Really appreciate the comments, especially if you see me doing something stupid hahah.
you are in luck my friend, I just got a 500 version in the shop a couple days ago, it is a complete mess so I am going to completely go through it in an upcoming video… also you can email me at partscannongarage at gmail dot com (won’t let me post an email address for some reason)
Yes, if you are standing behind the motor, it is on the right side. As I was feverishly searching the web for a fuel connector I came across a diagram of the fuel system and saw that the fuel pump is a little rectangle on center of the right side and they even sell gaskets for it. I am hoping I don’t have to touch it, but we’ll see. I ordered a fuel connector and it should be here in 5-7 days. You reminded me that I should prob do a better job pointing things out on the inspection step.
Those mercs had some very nice features compared to other brands of that era. There's not much plastic in them. The cover over the ignition keep it clean and dry, and provides some shielding from electrical interference. That big flywheel helps to let the motor troll at a very slow idle, perfect for fishing. I believe they were first to specify 50:1 premix, so you could troll all day without fouling the plugs.
I agree, it seems well designed. One thing I noticed is that all the others have an obvious way to start them if the pull start breaks, I guess you could wrap a rope around that flywheel with the teeth on the top?
@@partscannongarage Well designed? Yes, but to a fault as they seem over engineered IMO. Most manufacturers go about things in a similar tried/true way, not Merc. Mercs racing heritage led them down some paths that let them make an arguably superior product, they can be a nightmare to work on and sometimes fragile in use. No parts commonality between years on some models and none between different HP engines. Special $$$ tools required for some routine tasks, and technician levels of knowledge to repair what are simple procedures on other brands.
@@memyself3275 I can totally see that for sure as I found like 3 different fuel connectors for example, whereas evinrude seems to have one from the beginning of time until now hahah.

hahahah, thank you, it certainly is “something”

Wait until you see part 2 of “Cinder Block”, your advice was definitely needed, I completely forgot the newer motors had safety switches!

I have found your channel
welcome to the channel!
I have the 500 version of this motor. How can I message you to ask you some questions?

Can you find a fuel pump on that motor? Some of the old motors used a pressurized tank and you really dont want to go there.
