I'm following along with my "new" mercury 110 and this is perfect. I love that you show how to remove parts without special tools that cost a fortune. Tip master. Also, I was able to replicate your homemade puller using the same bolt setup you have with an existing 4 slot puller I just bought. Good for flywheel and this application. You're the man!
The trick with heating the case and the bearing falls right out, works great. The shifting paw has a flat side with two lobs. The case has a short wall (or a small shelf) the flat side of the paw faces the short wall. Watch when you take it apart. I was switching cases, 9.8(1970) to 7.5(1979). They are reversed, so you need to change the paw. Flipping it over looks like it would work, but it is tapered on the inside of the paw and will not seat on the shaft in the same position. Luckly I had the paw from both cases. So I just changed out the paw to match the new case. I got my bearings from a local bearing supply shop and saved money and time. To remove the retaining nut behind the prop, I used a black pipe nipple. I cut the sides with a saws-all leaving two tits to fit the slot in the nut. Then used a pipe wrench to turn it. worked great and was quick and easy to make. Good Luck All and be safe on the water.
Thanks for the info Michael! I'm the second owner of a 1962 Merc 400, that has been used in saltwater extensively. Even though I use Salt Away, and wash it down thoroughly, one of the parts in the gear housing have been eaten away. I'm tearing down the lower unit to figure out why my water pump is not working properly. It turned out to be the water pump cartridge assembly that was leaking between the cartridge and the stainless cartridge insert. The aluminum housing was eaten away about 1/16 of an inch, so It wouldn't make a nice seal. The whole assembly was frozen in, and thought I might need to drill it out. Fortunately, after about a week of soaking/heating and pounding down on the top of the gear case, with the shaft in a vise, It finally broke free. More amazing was that I found an old-new stock complete cartridge assembly. Was trying to figure out what type of puller I needed to remove the forward gear, and found your video. After about a minute using map gas, it popped out so quickly that I wasn't able to catch it with my hand underneath. Luckily I had a blanket on the floor. My next step is to remove the roller bearings from the gears. Hopefully you have a video on separating the gear from the housings. Thanks again for your help. David
Very good video. I have been searching for one like this and yours is very good. Also your recommedations to suppliers is good. I would not be intimadated to tear into one now.
I just rebuilt a merc 500 lower unit I just put the prop on and tapped it with a rubber mallet to knock the bearing carrier out, it was definitely an interesting project
👍👍👍 Good video . Only thing I was concerned about was the shift shaft didnt see the e clip under seal housing and the shift cam looked backwards lobe groove going to the right. Cause when took apart it was going to the left min 14:11 . I was paying attention .Cause I’ve learned a bunch from watching ya videos .. Awesome droning of the Banana👍👍👍👍. As always Sir thanks for the ride along ..
@RMDCreations Thank You! Love your videos and I refer to them on a regular basis. Live in NW Wisconsin and for the last several years have been working 50's-60's and 70's OMC Outboards and 1962-1970 Mercury 4hp thru mostly 9.8 hp Merc 110's.
Michael, you are very easy to watch, and I have gained a lot from you. My question is, on the port side of the gear housing (1967 9.8 mercury) is a hole. When I changed gear oil and tested it, some oil weeped from the hole. Is this normal? Thank you God bless the USA.
I watched both episodes of this 9.8, what was the verdict on the bad wires and no spark….. did the customer pay to get that fixed also ??? I love all your episodes !!! Keep on puttin them out !!!
Hi Mike. Really informative video. Sure would be interested to know how much the parts cost for the rebuild. I have a ‘94 9.9 Mercury 2 stroke that runs great but suddenly decided that it would not select forward, neutral or reverse. With shop costs at $180/hour plus tax I am debating wherther to attempt the fix myself or get a new, 20hp motor with a five year warranty. (Those would be Canadian dollars as I’m in Vancouver)
MISS INFORMATION ON MY LAST ENTRY: The flat side of the PAW is not near the short wall (or small shelf). The flat side of the Paw is opposite the short wall. Sorry for the confusion. I also ran into a problem with the changing the 6 point prop shaft to the newer 8 point(prop shaft is smaller) the spline (for the shifter gear on the prop shaft) are shorter in length. So measure these if you are interchanging the two shafts. (Read previous post for motor and years)
I have 66 or 67 merc 4hp with a completely seized up lower unit. This video will be really useful once I can get the locknut off of the propeller shaft. With the blade blocked the whole shaft turns inside the propeller when I wrench on the nut. I can turn it both directions. Any idea as to how to get that prop off? Thanks
I have an engine like the one here in Brazil, but oil is leaking from the elixir at the bottom and water is getting in, but nobody messes with these old motors here and they don't even have their oil seals for replacement, complicated
What I've run into with these is the driveshaft and shift rod will rust and be pitted due to being made from carbon steel. I've had to acid wash and skim coat with JB weld before. I much prefer Evinrude and Johnson. Oh, and by the way, that's a 9.8 isn't it, not a 9.9?
Lol I never like Mercury's I only like Jonson's Evinrudes I have been hunting for a 90hp an a 115hp most all I fine are way to fare from me I'm up in Central Michigan. Its good to take pitchers of all you are taking a part or do a video for your self so when you go to put it back to tether you will know where everything gos. I looked for that tool $38.99

All techniques worked as advertised on my 9.8 perfectly. Thanks!
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching

Thank you for your video for 9.8 Merc. This was a very needed video. Nicely done! Not as many Mercury video as OMC on RUclips.
thank you, any relation to the legend himself? thanks for watching
No relation, just a fan! Carl had a good story and hope his American story continues. Thanks again.
I followed your instructions and it worked exactly like you said . Thanks !
Very good video. I have been searching for one like this and yours is very good. Also your recommedations to suppliers is good. I would not be intimadated to tear into one now.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching

Thanks for watching and your comment.
This is very good video told me every thing I need to know now to find a drive shaft for mine thank you very helpful
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching
Thanks for the instruction, great step-by-step process. Do you have specific links for the bearings and seals you used?
You make it look easy ,great video thanks.
Thanks for the video, I have a 9.9 johnson that I just wanted to have look into. Will certainly take my chance during the winter
You can do it, thanks for watching

Nice catch. I actually disassemble one that was different than the one I put back together. Thanks for watching.
Well done! Exactly what I was looking for. Chuck in Barnes, Wi.
Glad I could help!

Crowley Marine is slower than slow! Great vid!
True!

GREAT video. There are zero complete ones out there.
Awesome, thanks for watching.
Nice job Mike
Thank you and thanks for watching
great video michel
Glad you enjoyed it
I don’t know about your memory but for me if it’s not going back on a unit I tag the service work done to it and attach it to the unit ! Works 4 Me !
I have been doing that on the outboards I have in the shed
I watched both episodes of this 9.8, what was the verdict on the bad wires and no spark….. did the customer pay to get that fixed also ??? I love all your episodes !!! Keep on puttin them out !!!
I never heard back as to what it was.
Nice work on the gear box can’t wait to see it run.
Thanks
Tim
You and me both! Thanks for watching
Just realized this is a Mercury not Mercruiser.🤣🤣 Just did one of these. Piece of cake.
Yes it was, thanks for watching

$300 plus in parts

At 32:53 I didn't see you put the shim back in before you reinstalled the bearing one did come out how important is that.

If it froze to the shaft, I would try to heat up the prop. If there is rubber in the prop this may not work.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina There is rubber on the shaft. That’s what’s turning. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it

MarineEngine.com is a good place to locate parts. thanks for watching

You are probably right on the 9.8 vs 9.9 Thanks for watching
what about the drive shaft seal???
I would typically replace all seals if I have it apart. Just easier that way, thanks for watching
any chance I can mail you mine and you can rebuild it for me and charge accordingly if it's even worth rebuilding??
it looks like from the video that you put the shift cam in upside down!
different years have the forward and reverse backwards for some reason. Thanks for watching
