    what a great video !! can relate so much, and always feel like a fraud when talking about photography like I know something. And I like your editing with the video, can't grep why you don't have much more followers, but I can promise they will show up with this content you're making!!

    I would say absolutely not an imposter. I live in Calgary, and I wish my photography was anywhere close to what you produce. I love watching your videos, they inspire by showing what is possible. I am planning to go to Wedge Pond in the next few days. Hopefully I haven't missed the fall colours.

    Interesting vid. I think there are different niches and we are best suited to photograph what we enjoy the most. I would dread (actually, I'd turn it down) shooting a wedding but love landscape, macro or architecture. Keep up the amazing work!

    The pictures at 4:38, the one with the chain and at 6:01 with the buildings I really enjoyed. I would say that good locations, like the Canadian rockies are an easy way for beginners to take decent photos. But I would also say that its the photographer who is committed and taking in the work who gets the better images. Its not just the Location itself. For example, I lived in Canmore for a work and holiday in 2018/2019 and it was kind of my first year with my camera. I took some decent photos and some of them are still my favourites. But if I would get the chance to shoot in the Canadian rockies now I would do other shots and probably better pictures. And don't screw up taking pictures of the northern lights :D Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and pictures and think you are a good photograph and its not just the location. Merry Christmas.

    Very relatable. Moving back to my hometown in Finland after a two year stint in Japan really killed off my inspiration for a long time.
    Great location, great light and gear you enjoy using all contribute to high quality image making, the less of these you have the harder it's going to be. An epiphany that has taken me way too long to realize is that I don't need the best gear on paper, I need good enough gear that I enjoy using, which is why I'm getting rid of my Sony gear and going all in on Pentax K. The Sony stuff is technically speaking better in almost every way but I just have way more fun shooting an SLR.
    Finally I'd like to say that personally I find it very important to print and display my work to get away from social media being the sole judgement on the value of my work.

    • @simoncennals
      @simoncennals  Год назад

      Very well put. It's about the enjoyment of shooting as much as the end result. Photography takes you places and makes you see things in new light. Recently picked up a Ricoh GR3 and take it out with me where I wouldn't normally bother. Resulting in getting some good images in places I didn't think we're worth shooting.

    I kind of look at photography as a "you get what you pay for" thing. In my opinion, based on experience, you can apply everything there is to know about composition but if the location isn't right and the lighting isn't ideal then you'll often feel disappointed and begin to ask questions. I'm from Weston super Mare, so I'm aware of all the stigma attached to Bridgwater, and I think you managed to capture a calming side of a usually really busy and unappealing place and you've turned it into a warm and cosy set of images

    First, I think younger folks are too sensitive to the likes/feedback you get through social media. But most people don't know what they're seeing, and may not appreciate your craft. So, take social media response with a grain of salt. Secondly, I think almost all photographers have a little insecurity, and they crave appreciation from others. I've seen this via Flickr, via my friends who shoot, and via members of my photography club. And I think it simply reflects our desire to continuously improve -- and of course, we cannot help but compare ourselves to others because of it. But I have learned to cut myself some slack ... I can't change the weather. I have limited control over my schedule. I have limited funds for equipment. I can only do the best I can in the moment I have and with the equipment I have -- and with my skills and eye, which are ever-evolving. Sure, someone else might get a better shot, and good for them -- but I am only in competition with myself and only I know what I had to deal with to get a particular shot. I will say this, though -- going on photo outings with my local photo club helped me a lot. I feel more confident in my street photography as a result. You might want to think about finding some photo pals to shoot with, because watching a bunch of people all take different approaches to the same thing helps you expand your own view of the possibilities. But all that said, you are not an imposter. You have captured amazing shots - and anyone who RUNS miles and miles to shoot something is NOT an imposter, LOL! My only piece of advice having heard your concerns, and having watched Fototripper and Adam Gibbs here on YT a lot, is that if you are concerned about capturing the predictable compositions, just MAKE yourself walk around to look for different compositions. But I don't think you will ever get over the feeling that you can do better -- and really, you don't WANT to get over it, because THAT is what will always drive you to improve.

    I think on Instagram people want to see perfection, so it's easier with beautiful places like the Canadian Rockies. Likes on pictures from the most popular places is because of the algorithm and popular hashtags, it pushes it to more people than unknown locations even though pictures from those unknown places might be so much better. So I wouldn't be worried about number of likes, they are mostly not about the quality of pictures. Also on Instagram there is just little connection with the audience so I would say it's more about the places than about the photographer.
    Here on RUclips we can see how creative you are, how much work there is behind all the pictures. And we can see that you are also a good videographer, you know how to make a good video. For example when you were on a run with your friends - so well done. Or this video, such a nice idea.
    Sometimes it can be also difficult to decide who you want to target. More general audience or just other photographers - that can also be a factor in number of views or likes. Algorithms have a lot of power so it's usually just up to them, who they want to show the content to. Sometimes it can be sad because there is so much amazing content that won't get discovered...

    FWIW, I enjoy your videos. I don't expect you to be the greatest photographer to have ever lived. And if truth be told some of the greatest photographs to have ever been made were due to luck as much as skill. So, don't worry about it, mate. Just enjoy it. And as long as you are doing that, it's worth doing.

    The UK is even a better place to photograph than my home country the Netherlands. No mountains, everything is flat as a pancake, so you need a great sky to have some counterweight for the bottom part of your photos 😅 Btw great photos of the Rockies. Never been there, but then to be honest even the hills of Limburg (southern part of the Netherlands) are making us smile. Anything different than a straight horizon is already a mountain to us flatlanders haha 😂

    Your Bridgwater photos are skilled and beautifull. Nice composition, morning light etc. However, they will never compete on social media with Rockey mountains. So many photos and videos are flung at a human eye, that it takes a huge amount of effort to capture an audience for more than a second. One of the social medias sent me stats about the amount of entries I've viewed (or rather scrolled) this year. It was more than 200 thousand. There's no point of measuring your art quality by "likes", overwhelmed human brain just doesn't see your work.

    I dont believe in imposter syndrome unless you set out to specifically copy a composition or look. I have been to locations where logistically due to their location and position make it near impossible to not take the same photo as everyone else does. A good example is Horse shoe canyon. It is what it is.

    • @simoncennals
      @simoncennals  Год назад

      For sure, horse shoe canyon is a great example of that. I suppose it's more when you feel like you aren't as capable as others think you are. Like if someone asked me to shoot a certain job I may think 'if I do that the results won't be great and they'll realise I'm not actually that good'!

    • @walkingmanvideo9455

      @@simoncennalsPhotography is like singing, we all have our own voice. Trying to sound like a great singer is not what its about, its about singing the way you do. Some people will admire your photography and others will not. This is part of society and being human. We can't please everyone and at the end of the day nobody is better. I tell you why. Here in Australia we have these cooking shows where michelin star chefs grade aspiring chefs dishes. What society and these snotty michelin chefs dont understand and convey is that, though they think the meal is no good, to others it would be a meal to die for. The same goes with photography. Unless your photos are dismally poor because of low experience and lack of knowledge, they are just as good as anyone else in the eye of the viewer. Social media has a lot to blame for all the stresses content producers deal with today.

    There are great photos taken in not so great of places, and not so great of photos taken in great locations. The photographer matters for sure. BUT, i do feel having iconic, beautiful locations is going to give a slight advantage, but even then, living a 5 minute drive from lake louis doesn't mean your going to have the best shots of it. Keep doing what your doing!

    • @simoncennals
      @simoncennals  Год назад

      For sure, hard to deny that mother nature plays a big role. But it's's the combination of location and skill that results in the best images.
