I think 2. Safety is the issue. Not being on the main floor and 5 min from work is great. You will get used to the freeway and hanging clothes outside. Also the shower room allows you to dry clothes inside. Too bad the closet isn’t in #2.
Thanks so much for sharing, it’s like an episode of house hunters international! I think you went with the second option because of the higher floor, proximity to work, no bugs, no “thank you money” offsets the cost, and of course the amenities!
I’m not moving to Japan for a while but I’m still looking for apartments so this was really nice to see! I think I would go for Apartment 2 if I knew I could afford it. The bigger room and nicer finishing on everything is nice. Also I think I would completely ignore anything on the first floor. Bugs are an absolute no
If you're going as most foreigners as an English teacher you won't be able to afford something for 1400, even like 700 would be too much, I've been seeing the salary it's shit :( I make more washing dishes in california
@@rodolfo7077 oh I’m definitely not teaching. Im pretty sure I’d lose my mind. I don’t actually know what I’m gonna do yet but I know I can’t afford something that expensive yet.
Congratulations on getting your new place. Personally I’d go for the second one. Had a much better quality of finish to it, plus the security and peace of mind being above the second floor. Being in between areas could be fun for exploring too.
the second one is so charming!! i think since it checked off more of your requirements, it’s best suited for you despite being over your budget. so i hope you picked that one hehe. but any place can be perfect if you think of it as your home and make it your own 😌
I think you choose unit 1 because of all the cafes nearby but I hope you choose unit 2 because it's way nicer and really, it's not hard to throw out some clothes and you do get used to living to a highway. Can't wait for the apartment move in video!
Thanks for another great video! My Husband and I are moving to Japan in August, and while we will have lots of help from his new employer with the moving/housing process, I love videos like this with tip & tricks. I would especially be interested in any suggestions you have about the process of introducing yourself to new neighbors, learning your way around local train travel (for newbies to Japan), and best options for finding local Nihongo classes! :)
I think Apartment No.1 is what you chose because of the trendy area you mentioned that was walking distance, the size of the apartment was good, and it is cheaper than the second apartment. Side note: I don’t mind spiders compared to other bugs/ insects 😅 jars are wonderful forms of transportation for spiders to the outside! But only if you’re feeling brave 😊 I hope the move isn’t too taxing and good luck 👍🏻
This is tough but you were very detailed with your pros and cons. I think the cheaper one being closer to shops could cause extra spending due to that convenience so maybe the little more expensive one is worth being closer to work, further from shops and more convenient amenities in the building. I just hope you can get creative with some type of sound proofing and maybe under the bed storage. Good luck with your move. we hope you are happy with whichever decision!
I'd go for #1 bc I'm a heavy sleeper and love going under-budget >:) but I hope you chose #2! I feel like the convenience of the combini and other amenities and the short walk to work would save you a lot of time! (time that could go towards relaxing, playing games, ᵐᵃᵏᶦⁿᵍ ᵐᵒʳᵉ ᵛᶦᵈᵉᵒˢ ʰᵉʰᵉʰ, spending time with friends, etc! ^^)
Yeah, apartment 2, with the 5 minutes to work, a package drop-off, etc. The noise, once you have your stuff in there, I don't think it would be so noticeable. Plus you can always wear earplugs for sleeping. So, I'd say you went with apartment 2.
I think that you probably chose option 2 because even though it was a bit above your budget, it has so much more of what you wanted and it's so close to your new job. That being said, I probably would have chosen option 1 because the kitchen was bigger lol.
If I were you, I would have chosen the second one! Even though it’s a bit more expensive, safety is definitely most important, especially since you’re living alone. Plus, you can always buy extra storage for your clothes. The negative parts of the first house can’t be improved using money but the second one can!
Thanks for the vid. Based on the 2 I personally would choose the first option 1- the separated toilet 2- walk in closet 3- location and convenience.. having the accessibility to conveniently walk and enjoy the area and local shops. Would also I’m sure help with content if you wanted to edit outside of home but not travel far
1st one was good but it’d be better if it was on the 2nd or 3rd floor. I like white noises/light sounds bc it’ll make me sleep easy? Lol. Plus it seems affordable. The 2nd one is really nice for an upgrade! I think you chose #2❤ you deserve it, girl😊
My pick would be number 1. Better location and the separate bath area and the walk in closest! My daughter moved about 6 yrs ago, I remember her stress level! She lives a couple hours from Tokyo, so much easier than your move. Good luck!
This was really interesting to watch! I've seen a lot of apartment tours, but never a Japanese apartment hunting vid. So I didn't know much about the different kinds of amenities, pricing, exact size, etc. It seems like the cities in Japan have way nicer and cheaper apartments than in places like New York, lol. Oof, I definitely would've picked Apartment #2, but Apartment #1 is cheaper in the long run, so there's that. I just can't stand orange walls, haha, and Apartment #2 was suuuper nice.
Even if I LOVE the bath area in the second one I think you choose the first one that is also very cute! To be 5 minute walking distance from work sound great ✨ ( or maybe I'm completely wrong 🤣)
Congrats on the new place! I kinda hope you picked the second one because the first one looked pretty bad tbh, but I get it if the money was the deciding factor. Been there! Also I’d love to see an updated how to move video!!
I think the second one just for the privacy of being on a higher floor, but it looks lovely too! Whichever you chose, I hope you are very happy there :)
if you're a light sleeper and noises outside wake you up easily, try a white noise machine if you haven't already. i thought it was keep me up at night but it's honestly been a game changer for my sleep.
Apartment 1 had built in cockroach pest control - spiders’ favorite snack ;) I think I have heard that there’s actually a specific type of large spider Japanese people want to come into their homes and hunt pests (they hunt at night); maybe that’s just in the countryside. Ps: Apartment 2 will require some excellent space saving strategies but definitely an awesome choice. Might make for some great videos: how to save space in tiny apartment (Marie Kondo style?) ❤
lvoed the video, please do a tour then! I think 2 is good, for security and convenient, even tho I think first one could make of a cute one! but comfort is important :)
Id chose the 2nd apartment, it looks very nice the closet space is a bit small. if the counter space in the kitchen isnt enough you could add a fold out counter that u can pull out while cooking.
Not bad at all! I would 1000% pay 135,000 yen for that! Where I live in Canada a place like that would be around 2000-3000 dollars a month. I’m looking into moving to Japan and renting out my current place (which I could rent for $3200) which would definitely cover pretty much any place there from the looks of it. Thanks for this video!
Given all the information you cited it's a tough choice. I like to open my balcony windows which makes it harder as you have to choose between visibility from the street or traffic noise (and pollution). Sound you can take care of with noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs for sleeping. (The custom made ones, not the foam bits.) Bugs are off-putting, but closets are the toughest call. If you have a platform bed with storage under it, that would help to ease that burden. But you have to store lots of things like suitcases too. I'd pick #2 for the extra amenities. If you can work toward a minimalistic style, it will be more comfortable in the long run. Personally, I would have sucked it up in your current place for a bit longer, done the commute, and moved in the off-season when I might have more choices. But that's me.
2 would be best! It’s only slightly over your budget but you can apply your “thank you” money for the difference. Plus, you can keep your window open and get your natural light in there. All the amenities that would allow you to live a less stressful life are also available in the second apartment, along with a convenience store. 2 it is!
I'm guessing Apartment 2 because you want to treat yourself to a nice place. It's ¥135,000 just "slightly" above your budget. I wouldn't mind moving an apartment like this. My UTokyo dorm room is absurdly small now. It's always good to live a little
Excellent video. I learned a lot. Never thought about the downsides of a ground floor unit. You definitely taught me a lot. My wife's Mom has a washer, but no dryer. It's kind of a pain. Her sister has a comfortable apartment with one of those drying bathrooms. Very weird. But it seems to work.
i love house-hunting stuff! thank you for sharing!! between the two i would personally pick 2...mostly because of the bathroom (it looked so nice and so much storage! plus i prefer having the toilet together with the rest in one room) and like you said with being not on the 1st-floor because of insects i wish you good luck on your move!
Personally, I would choose apartment 2 the motorway/highway wouldn't bother me as I've lived beside one nearly all of my life so I've learned to tune out of it unless they happen to be doing major repair work cause that's another story altogether lol. Grats on the move and I'm looking forward to see what you chose in the end.
You picked the 2nd one and thats the one thats worth the money. Yes youll have to walk more to get to things but walking is good exercise. You could also get a bike and that distance would be nothing.
I would pick the second one. I lived in a street level studio before, curtain was always closed like you mentioned, which felt boxed in and the interior didn’t get natural lighting. The experience was rather depressing and I would not do it again.
I'm guessing you went with Apartment 2, mainly because of the street level / security issue. Looking forward to seeing the moving vkogs, hope it all went smoothly 🤞
I'm thinking you went with apartment number 2 just because it met more of your criteria and you could use the "thank you" money towards future rent. 🤔Number 1 had some good things going for it too though... I mean that walk in closet, entryway, and large overhead kitchen cabinets are something to consider. It will be fun to see what you chose!
Congrats on finding a new place! 🎉 And if I had to guess...hmm I'm not sure, maybe the 1st one? 🤔Athough I probably would've chosen the 2nd one (despite being a bit over budget) due to not having to pay the thank you fee 😅. Anyway, look forward to your future moving vids and hope the everything goes (or went depending on when you're reading this ^^) well!
Very informative video. I came back for a Japan trip a few months ago and I started thinking about going there for work. You mention NYC apartment hunting vids, but even US tier 2 cities, I wouldn't find any apartments for 1k USD. Not for buildings that have the accessibility Tokyo offers.
Hello, This was great video! Question: beside May/April, what would be another high season. We will be moving to Tokyo mid august to start business school in September.
I also think you probably chose the 2nd one. I hope everything goes smoothly with you move 📦 I'd be interested in hearing more about moving in Japan, etc. because I'll go to language school next year and also have to decide if I want to rent an apartment or move into a share house 😊
Oh wow, very difficult decision. I kind of liked the first one a little better. It looked more spacious. However I would have and I think you did too, choose the second apartment because living on first floor and having to probably live with the bug problem a long time would be out of the question for me. So I think you’ve chosen apartment number two. Can’t wait to find out which one you’ve really got.
I think the 2nd one. I showed apartments for 10 years and non-negotiables were never up for debate. 1st floor and safety for single women were top of the list… same for the luxuries 🤣🤣
Hello~ I would've gone for the second one but I'm a heavy sleeper so I wouldn't be bothered by the highway. That said, a 5 minute walk to work sounds heavenly 😩✨ and the conbini is a double edged sword cause nice but also I wouldn't leave the building lmao
Apto 2. The problem is the same as the 1st - noise. Personally, I like apto 1 more - more storage and more light but then you said is ground floor and that is a big NO. Never feel confortable is a big no for me so I would have picked 2nd.
I'd say you went with #2. Apartment #1 being ground floor is a deal breaker, too many cons being on a ground floor in my book in a dense urban area. Not to mention the street noise is more apparent vs white noise effect in the 2nd.
I will take parament 1, due to the fact that it is not near to a Highway. I rather deal with a smaller road with less traffic than a highway with more traffic. I believe you chose apartment 2 since it more mode.
I think you chose number 2. A lot of things in that apt would make it comfortable for you. I think?? Either way you are so knowledgeable about these things and you’ll make the right decision either way. It’s all about compromise right?
First one had a spider 🤣 but it looked like a deal to me. Like, the second place was beautiful, it had all the bells and whistles but the space in apartment 1 is just so great. And the ease of walking to fun trendy places, and work distance. It just feels like a steal man! BUT THEN, being on the first floor 💀 I was gonna say you went with apartment 2, just cuz 🤣🤣 but now i really dont know. They both have such great pros and great cons
I think you chose the second one because it looks nicer, higher level, 5 mins from work, no thank you money, 24 hour garbage disposal or whatever that is, etc
Thank you for showing everyone the new places you went to look at. I think you have chosen the second apartment because you don't have to pay the thank you money. 😂 also, a 5 minute walk to work sounds ideal.
Gosh the whole apartments go immediately thing sounds terribly stressful. That was the housing market the last two years in Ohio! It’s a bummer you can’t wait until you find everything you want but I hope you got enough of the important stuff from your list!
I personally would have gone with #2 since it had a nicer bathroom space and was closer to work. I can't wait to see which you picked, I think it is hard to find a perfect fit and both had some good and bad aspects. Are there a lot of options for moving companies for you to help package up and transport your furniture/boxes/appliances?
I lived in a studio for about a year and it's just so claustrophobic for me not to have one separate room for my bed and my pile of clothes and stuff like that. I might actually put a folded futon in that walk-in closet in the first apartment and sleep there :P
Apartment #2. It was nicer overall. That walk-in closet in Apartment #1 - hard to pass up in Japan, Tokyo. Don't know if the apartment is worth Y25K more but that being said I would go with #2. Like your down to earth style videos. Wish you all the best.
You can't hang clothes outside in either apartment, they're both noisy but the second one is not as noisy... and it has package delivery boxes. I think you chose apartment number 2.
APARTMENT ONE OR TWO!?! Let me know!!! The movers are coming in 10 minutes as I’m writing this btw loll
Also I wanted to make a cute house hunters graphic but I ran out of time before the move 🥹
oh I hope it's 2, all the convenience items make it a winner
I think two!
i think 1 because of the area, walking distance and it's cheaper
I think you probably chose apartment two despite the higher rent
The second apartment had me at “5 minutes from work”
I think the 2nd one 😅
I think 2. Safety is the issue. Not being on the main floor and 5 min from work is great. You will get used to the freeway and hanging clothes outside. Also the shower room allows you to dry clothes inside. Too bad the closet isn’t in #2.

Second apartment. Plants outside might help for deadening sound. It's a nice balcony and amenities.

Apt 2 for several reasons but for me the closeness to work is #1. You will be going to work daily so the location is much better.
I would pick the second one. I lived in a street level studio before, curtain was always closed like you mentioned, which felt boxed in and the interior didn’t get natural lighting. The experience was rather depressing and I would not do it again.
The second one!!

Both were nice to me, but I think you chose the second one
Both apartments seemed to have a lot of kitchen counter and cabinet space for a studio in Tokyo. Both seemed very nice for the prices you quoted.
I think you would pick the second one. I personally would pick the second too 😂
I personally would have gone with #2 since it had a nicer bathroom space and was closer to work.
I think I would have picked the second one
Did I see you in Jiyugaoka yesterday? Did you wear the black dress with sun glasses?
I'm moving to Tokyo in July. What area do you recommend for a 29 year old dude?
I would have chosen apartment 2 😊
great video hope the move goes well 🙂
Apartment #2. It was nicer overall. That walk-in closet in Apartment #1 - hard to pass up in Japan, Tokyo. Don't know if the apartment is worth Y25K more but that being said I would go with #2.
Like your down to earth style videos. Wish you all the best.
I AM INTERESTED IN A MOVING APARTMENT VIDEO
You can't hang clothes outside in either apartment, they're both noisy but the second one is not as noisy... and it has package delivery boxes. I think you chose apartment number 2.
Can you make one on how to get a job in Japan as a foreigner? Please 🙏
Please do the updates video I'd love to see it!!
The second one?
