My school just got done with this musical. In our production the role of Samuel was changed to Sammantha (so a girl could play a part) and there were more girl pirates then there were boys. I go to an all girls school, but we invite guys to come do shows with us. Also in our production the Police were all played by girls but they had to act like men, except for the Sergeant, who we had played by a girl
I am currently doing a production of this show too, and the pirates are all played by boys, but the officers are all girls. I am an officer... But the officers are led by a guy. The shows are coming up soon and I'm super nervous...
I know I'm 5 years too late to address this, but...why on earth would you change Samuel to an actual girl instead of just crosscasting and having the girl play a boy? If nothing else, it completely messes up the storyline with Frederick and Ruth (and Mabel). Literally the whole point of the "Frederick-Ruth-Mabel" thing is that Frederick's never seen another woman except Ruth since he was 8 years old, until he sees the Major-General's daughters. I went to a school where we constantly had more girls than boys in the shows we did, and we just crosscast the girls so they'd play boys. In Oliver we had a girl playing the Artful Dodger, in Joseph most of the brothers were played by girls, in Wizard of Oz the Cowardly Lion was a girl too, and in Les Mis we had girls playing sailors and soldiers and fighters on the barricade.

Kevin Kline is having a -lot- of fun. You can tell throughout the entire production.
I love it when actors have fun. This looks really fun to perform!
It's well worth a look. Well casted all around but Kline steals the show.
Fortunately, the Major General rolled a natural 1 on his Listen check, so it all evens out.

"WITH CAT-LIKE TREAD!"
It makes sense, they're pirates and they're used to announcing they're pirates and they're here to plunder. Sorry, Vary Piracy with a little burglary.
this is like thinking you're healthy by eating tons of cottage cheese, we're being stealthy by bursting into song
Kevin Kline's outrageous dancing in this number... Not to mention the epic shout-singing and sword waving. I can't stop laughing.
I can't get over how freaking epic this song is!!
What song? All I could hear was the sighing of a breeze
This is the only G&S operetta written mostly in the USA in NYC during December of 1879 and there is even a plaque there commemorating it.
when the "come friends who plough the sea" hits i lose my mind
The cannon at the end kills me every time
I love this G & S plot.
I love Kevin Kline and think he is seriously underated ! He is just flipping great.
MICKEY AND THE THREE MUSKETEERS AHHH SONG
I will always remember Kevin Kline as the Pirate King. Awesome.
When the Paladin in plate armour has to make a stealth check
Major-General:"Wait. I think i just failed a listen check."
I Love how G&S musicals are funny and poke fun at operas
Can someone please let the uploader know there’s no audio in this clip?...wait...
Sorry but it's silent there is no audio in this video.
What do you mean, you can clearly hear the footsteps of a fly among the sighing breeze
