The stars of the Broadway show reprised their roles in the film verison, Rex Smith,George Rose, Linda Ronstadt, Tony Azito, and Kevin Kline as the Pirate King.
Nobody can do the Major General like George Rose. I found out the saddest thing about him yesterday. He was gay and had no real partner or heir but really wanted one. So he eventually adopted a 14 year old boy in the Dominican Republic and he was going to leave everything to him. He wanted to help this young man grow up to be prosperous and teach him all about music and such. Several years later in 1988 the adopted boy, along with his biological father and a couple of other men tortured George Rose for 8 hours and then bludgeoned him to death. They tried to make it look like a car accident and although they eventually confessed, they were never given a trial and the adopted son was released from jail and did end up receiving part of that inheritance! George Rose’s body was dumped in an unmarked grave in some trash covered cemetery in the Dominican Republic. He was so talented, kind and intelligent. The man did not deserve such a brutal and tragic end
My god… what hideous creatures those beings really are. I cannot believe they got away with it. What sinister monsters. Should be sentenced to the gallos. My god I can’t believe that, that’s made me shed a tear.
They cut out the middle verse, which is by far the hardest. It's full of references hardly anyone would get these days. Yeah, I used to have the whole song memorized. Not sure I could still sing it today.
Anyone else confused by sat a gee. I did a cursory bit of research and I think I've got it. More correct would be sat a gee gee as gee gee seems to be a slang for horse and sat a horse is to sit properly on and utilize a horse. So when he says rode a horse he's telling you what he meant with that nonsense turn of phrase that seems to have originated in this musical. Gee gee seems to be slang for horse due to gee being used in horse riding as a command at times by some groups. But it confused me at first and this is only speculation based on my quick research and reading of the script. Now I kind of want to research the other lyrics to see if they are clever references as well. Probably, given the legendary writers.
Killed by his 14-year-old Godchild, his Godchild's Father and Uncle just because George Rose was gay. And George Rose intended to inherit his fortune from him.

Wait, I'm confused. Is the woman's father a major-general? The beginning seems to be somewhat vague on the subject, and the fact that the entire rest is his admitting that he knows nothing about military matters just confuses things further.
This is a recurring theme in Gilbert and Sullivan. Now landsmen all, whoever you may be, If you want to rise to the top of the tree, If your soul isn't fettered to an office stool, Be careful to be guided by this golden rule. Chorus. Be careful to be guided by this golden rule. Sir Joseph. Stick close to your desks and never go to sea, And you all may be rulers of the Queen's Navee!
