[OUT OF DATE] Is Melee Hunter DEAD in Phase 4 of Season of Discovery? PTR First Impressions

- The first thing I noticed when the PTR went live were the changes to the Melee Hunter playstyle. The rune itself saw some adjustments and no longer gives any cooldown reduction to anything, but now gives mongoose bite the 30% chance to reset raptor strike, which previously was only applied to raptor strike itself.
This combined with the new cobra slayer chest rune allows you to actually use mongoose bite without anything attacking you, however the rotation could still use some major work, with a hard 6sec cooldown on raptor strike, unless it resets itself, you'll have lots of time in your rotation doing absolutely nothing.
Even if mongoose bite is available to be used every single time it's cooldown is up, which is 5seconds. You'll still have tons of room in the middle of combat where you're just doing absolutely nothing. And the new Cape rune slot only really gives us additional movement speed.
Let me know what your thoughts on the changes are but regardless I know we all can't wait for phase 4 season of discovery.

Feels really bad man. I really invested in melee hunter and played it since the start of p1 and not I just feel silly since I can’t play it at max level.
I think your analysis is spot on. A few things to note:
1) That hit and run rune is meant for the 2H Survival Hunter who has to range weave with chimera shot (which ironically, is currently bugged).
2) I suspect that they are going to turn 2H hunter into the Nightfall spec for casters.
3) If they don't give melee hunters a raid buff/debuff/utility then people will bring Trueshot aura. It's that simple. The success and failure of melee hunter hinges on that one simple fact. Because otherwise you will stack the raid with 20 warriors and bring 2 Trueshot Aura hunters. Yawn. Boring.
As a suggestion I propose the following: Melee Hunters need a raid/dps "aspect" which feels less meme than aspect of the hawk to slightly boost your pet's dmg anyway... Give us an aspect that gives us and our parties the feral druid 3% crit buff (not stacking of course). Feral druids will love this because then they can play Omen of Clarity if there isn't a melee hunter in their group.

Meanwhile ranged is gonna have free traps with nearly half as much cooldown and trap damage that scales to your ap. So there's hardly gonna be a need for steady shot or aimed shot, freeing up a rune slot and a talent point (if you even wanted aimed shot). They've been buffing ranged for months while slowly taking away things for melee. We should have seen this coming.
What are your thoughts since the rework?
I like the idea they have here with adding runes to accommodate and differentiate DW/2H builds but they missed the mark. Wyvern strike seems cool and it would make SV hunter classic melee weaving (or range weaving now) viable but the skill isnt worth taking over dw spec. They should give WS a unique debuff and maybe up the damage a bit. Would be cool to see hit and run reworked completely.. ie give us fugging disengage already!!! Id rather run the trap runes with that type of build as well as kill shot. Cool stuff and it is definitely more of my idea of a melee hunter from the beginning of all this.
It seems like with hit and run and the new wyvern strike rune, there's gonna be a return to melee/ranged weaving in survival spec and a 2h.

they are making all our rotations so complex and complicated its crazy and steady shot just rots why bother even putting a rune in for it how many freaking key binds do I need to play my class this is not fun
phase 1-3: play melee hunter. phase 4: play ranged hunter. I love the illusion of choice in this game xD
Phase 1 it was range with melee weaving, phase 2 it was melee, phase 3 was half melee then half ranged, p4 looks ok for both, you are missing the point, for me its mostly the trees you could play (bm half the season) and the useless for 2 phases lonewolf rune, i started sod and hunter just to play him without pet, and thats more frustrating
Raptor strike is also no longer instant.
Which makes everything SO much worse
it is still instant despite the tooltip not reflecting that
Melee hunter was fine, but those devs had to f it up.
As a hunter I don't want to play warrior so I'm happy to shoot my bow again

bahahaha. i love it. mongoose bite procs when they dodge, and the set bonus also makes it so it procs when they dodge/parry/you miss as well......other set bonus is that in decreases targets chance to dodge, and decreases your chance to miss when you hit them with mongoose bite.....ummm wtf? entirely contradictory.

I quit sod yesterday and unsub, as main hunter I was hyped since phase 1, but the poor class and rune design after phase 2 made me sick of the game, melee hunter is dead in phase 4 after I invested so much time and effort into it. I've been very patient with all nerfs hunter got but this on is too many now. Especially when you look at other class who gets sick runes / class changes like shamans (shaman are going to kill pvp in phase 4 just like they did in phase 3). Hunter is gonna be by far the worst class to play in phase 4 sod.
I feel ya bud. I invested everything into my melee hunter too. Was bis phase 3 and then they announced they wanted to "diminish melee hunter" and i quit a week after and so glad i did. Fuck this game.

Ranged hunters aren't exactly thrilled with the spam all traps constantly meta they're leaning into either. At least this ranged hunter isn't. But this is more of a PvP perspective and we all know that's a trash perspective to have. We'll see. Still processing most of these changes.
I actually agree with you. Trap launcher just feels bad even in raids, that's why I stayed melee in p3.
@@Kippzo It took a few weeks to get used to in raids. And I was constantly comparing vanilla/classic rotation to what it had turned into in SoD. Crazy different.
I'm totally disappointed with the new hunter runes and changes.
If you read the blue post you would see melee hunters are also getting wyvern strike if talented into wyvern sting, chimera shot resets wyvern strikes cooldown as well. I believe thats why they added hit and run to weave in some range shots.
too bad it's on the same rune slot as Dual Wield Specialization, that's a no-go
@@TonyAllainOh dear, that is a problem, but I wonder if a melee weaving build with a slow 2h may be viable.

@@joelswatten9611nobody wants to weave. Its an annoying playstyle that will do less damage than pure ranged. Mongoose bite did so little damage that an extra 40% isn't worth adding it to your cast bar. Pure melee hunter has effectively been removed from the game. Raids wont bring one when ymthey can bring TS aura for more raid damage plus more damage from the hunter itself

Need to activate PTR account by going to your account settings > games and subs > scroll to the bottom and there should be an option to create ptr account

Does that actually sim higher? The data wasn't out when I made this video but that's actually so much worse. I didn't even consider it because you'd have to ditch Dual Wield Spec for Trap Launcher and Flanking Strike for Kill Shot. But I guess not having to use Cobra Slayer on Chest lets you use Lone Wolf, which is just super overpowered 30% increased damage. Still even with that setup Kill Shot only hits for a few hundred on the PTR. Regardless I'd still never want to actually do that in a raid in a million years.
@@Kippzo with tsa and 20 suv, kill shot hit as hard as 2h raptor. So that it feels like you are still using raptor strike every 3 seconds. But yeah it is bit worse than dw, and kill shot crits on mm spec not as high as pure raptor strike spam

THats great melee hunter was too OP, number 1 on the damage meter statistics, high above everyone else.
You’re just factually wrong. It’s not even in the top 3 dps specs currently on p3.
I play warrior shaman hunter and rogue all melee and hunters are the lowest of the 4 already. My warrior like a good 200 to 300 dps higher then the hunter already. I can see p4 melee hunter prob be 800 dps where as warriors and shamans will be will over 2k
Melee hunter was never #1 and is currently #4 out of melee classes. Idk where you get your made up rankings
@@brandonwilson4740 he was number 1 multiple weeks out of these 10. You are right that now he has moved to 4. But he is still 4 and high above like 17 other dps specs. Its all on wowhead
