    In summary, the Rolex Daytona is popular because some lady, who was informed about watches, bought one for her husband because they were on clearance sale. Such was her regard for the watch, that she engraved a passive aggressive message on it before handing it over. Lo and behold, and no thanks to the actual merit of the watch, that man happened to be Paul Newman. And to this day the Rolex Daytona enjoys unearned prominence.
    I couldn't agree more with WF&Co.'s assessment.

      Well, the Daytona became a famous watch around the 90's, when they were using zenith's movements. Then every version became even more famous, and for that reason people started looking for vintage versions of the watch. So, actually, the merit behind that fame is of the watch, but not this particular model! PS. I love them all!

      Epic....fail? I find it hard to prove it with facts and not just a 'guts feeling'. Besides personal preferences, arguably the Speedmaster Pro is in more wrists than the Daytonas. Don't get me wrong, both chronographs are gorgeous and carry lots of History. But let's be honest and put our fanboy feelings behind

    • @ashez01
      @ashez01 5 лет назад +17

      @@aromaticsnail I get your point but as far as I perceive this statement, Rolex got the market share which is the ultimate desire of any company... Lange & Söhne...!!

      nualdifa modern day omega can only dream of Rolex’s business model.. it’s not a gut feeling it’s simply fact.. omega has to invent a new limited edition speedy every month to push a few more sales and regularly offloads old stock it can’t sell to the grey market.. Rolex uses the same design it has forever and can sell more that it can produce, with waiting lists now closed or running into tens of years..

    • @bigpoppapump5993
      @bigpoppapump5993 5 лет назад +3

    • @aromaticsnail
      @aromaticsnail 5 лет назад +1

      @@nickgoode3062 sure, but can you actually know how many watches Rolex sells? As far as I know, the foundation doesn't publish figures. And if you want to talk about "using the same design" compare a 50's pre-moonwatch and a 2018 counterpart. True, Omega milks their moonwatch cow as much as they can. But Rolex is on purpose limiting production to give the illusion of high demand....nothing new...very similar to the diamond industry. But that doesn't change the fact that both are great watches. I just don't agree that there are facts that prove a Daytona is superior to a Speedmaster Professional. As facts, we can use COSC v. METAS certification, as the tests are based on well-established criteria that is comparable.

    The dial on the Paul Newman' Daytona looks like paper, doesn't it? 😂😂

  • @MrAristaeus
    @MrAristaeus 5 лет назад +66

    The Paul Newman has beautiful negative space. The eyes can rest (and bathe, if you will) whilst taking in the features that become highlighted as a result. It’s the combination of having the subdials AND the negative space that is so appealing. There’s a tremendous confidence in a watch that doesn’t have to cram the dial’s real estate, selling it to the viewer in every square millimetre... even if that is a retrospective explanation for its popularity, in addition to its celebrity association, I think that is why the watch appeals to haute horologists today.
    It’s why I like it in any case!

    The size of the brand didn't have anything to do with NASA's selection of the Speedmaster. A NASA employee drove across town to a watch shop, bought a ton of watches, including Rolex, subjected them to a series tests, and selected the watch that came out the other side in best shape. That was the Speedmaster, with other watches destroyed beyond function. Omega was subsequently notified and obviously pleasantly surprised. The rest is history.

    Hey guys - another excellent review/comparison, as always. I love that you refrain from things like numerical scores and outright judgements, instead letting the watches, their historical or aesthetic contexts, and interesting features speak for themselves and thus letting us judge them on their own merits. It's how reviews should be done, I think; after all, your experience of a given product might differ considerably from my own, and it's almost a certainty that our tastes won't run exactly parallel. Put it this way: there's a reason why I come to you guys first any time I want to learn more about a given piece.
    So, with that in mind, I have a request. I know that the watches you showcase are limited by your inventory, and that harder-to-come-by brands probably don't make it across your workbench(es) very often, but recently I've developed a fascination with automatic watches that have cartwheel-style rotors. For example, the Grand Seiko SBGJ021 Limited Edition (link below). In searching for other watches with similar adornments, I came across Speake-Marin, and fell instantly in love with their designs. So, if you ever happen to get one in, I would be beyond thrilled to see your take on it. Also, just a thought, a video showcasing automatic watches with unique/interesting rotor designs. I realise that it's perhaps a little too narrow of a focus, but just a thought. Thanks again, as ever, for another beautifully shot and produced video; keep 'em coming!

      Yup. Speedy > Daytona all day everyday. This coming from a guy that owns two steel Sports Rolex. The Daytona is just ugly and has zero soul. A copycat design from a Brand that otherwise sets the standard in design (DJ, Sub, GMT, etc.)

    Get a Steinhart and get a very good option of Paul Newman homage. Rolex's new Daytona is a big chunk lacking of that tool watch they used to have. It pretends to be a luxury watch and those polished surfaces make it scratchable.

    I want the new design but with legibility and size of old one "small wrist club"

    Because it isn't. The new watch looks just as good, will be more accurate and for the change you can buy a flat, a car, travel the world and.....you get the drift. Vintage cars I can appreciate as they look different but to a non watch enthusiast it is just another Daytona.

    Sorry, you haven't sold it to me. The newer Daytona is much better looking than the historic version. The rest is pretentious. Then again I don't have the cash to buy it so it's moot.

      I really don't like the new Daytonas. Too shiny and matte. Not enough sharp edges and WAY too much text on the dial.

      I prefer the new Daytona. The vintage one looks nice, but I still can't understand why people place such a high value to it. One thing I would like to see different in the new Daytona is solid chrono sub dials and not just the dark ring. The three rings give the dial a busier look than is necessary.

      Jsuarez6 Agreed. Have you checked out the Gevril Tribeca? Not quite Rolex. But I think it’s the second best thing to the Paul Newman Daytona.

    The 6263 was my holy grail even before I knew the horological relevance and its price. It simply looks awesome. Clean for a chrono, all measurements fit together. Designwise, this is the upper class of what watches really can offer. Sadly, pricewise this one is upper class too

    The Daytona has "everything".
    Everything as in, the time, and no date, and a chronometer that's pretty much useless today. A GMT is miles more useful in every way.

    It was featured in a small scene in 'Crazy Rich Asians'. It's early in the film where Astrid gives her husband Michael the watch. It's unclear from the articles I read if it was the actual Paul Newman Daytona or another vintage Daytona from that era. Either way the fictional character could afford to pay for the Paul Newman.

    the notion that you can get a new daytona for retail is a fucking joke. most rolex dealers wont even call when they get one unless you spend over 100k per year on rolex's.

    It sold for 20 million dollars because that is what someone was willing to pay for it due to less supply and more demands but certainly the £9k Daytona is more superior like a rabbit is to a rat. We live in an era of excessive wealth where the rich are using all sort of medium to store wealth such as wine, cars, arts, watches, along with other conventional assets. The £9k Daytona is a realistic proposition.
