WTF I’m watching the Two Towers as I type, and was thinking just before you posted this, “what are the differences between the books and movies?” And then you post this! Crazy
It’s been years since I’ve read any of the LotR trilogy. The part you mentioned about Gollum not knowing why Frodo and Sam were going to Mordor might be true in the films too. To my knowledge (I haven’t watched the movies in nearly 2 years), neither Frodo nor Sam said anything about destroying the ring in front of Gollum in the films until after Frodo spares Gollum when he attacks him in Shelob’s lair. After Gollum says the precious made him attack his master, Frodo says he has to destroy the ring for both their sakes. Gollum freaks out and pounces on Frodo, who then throws Gollum off the mountainside. I never noticed the correlation until you mentioned it here. Just a cool little tidbit I thought of.
"Bring your pretty face to my axe!" 🤣 Best Gimli quote ever Also, yes! Celebrating the differences between the books and movies yet again! Dont remember the TTT book as well as RotK...time for a reread!! 😁
I really appreciate how Tolkien didn't write the infirmity of Théoden as caused by an elaborate sorcerer's curse but rather an ambiguous mental affliction (something he may have been familiar with himself as a war weary veteran), that was only amplified by Grima's insideous influence. I understand that cinema is a visual medium and changes had to be made by Jackson to convey this to the audience in a more spectacular way.
I agree. However, it upsets me that Tolkien never showed Theoden react to the death of his son more explicitly. It always strikes me as a huge missing element that they filled in with the movies.
Wish I got to see the Huorn. And the eyes that peered out of the forest as they passed by. But I see why it was cut in the film. And Aragorn was prepared when he jousted wills with Sauron in the Palantir.
Faramir in the book has a rock-solid moral compass. His key line is something like: "Even if the ring of power were laying alongside the highway I would not stop to pick it up." Once he finds out Frodo has the ring Faramir is not tempted in the slightest to take it from him or hinder his quest. I don't see the point in the movie of having Faramir deciding to take the ring to Gondor and changing his mind because of Sam's (...there's good in this world that's worth fighting for...) speech.
People can debate about certain scenes in the movie compared to the books, but I always thought the movie did a great job when Gandalf releases Theoden from the spell. One of many favorite scenes from TTT, the film. Thanks for posting!
It's somewhat ironic that Tolkien specifically warned a filmmaker in 1960s that Theoden most definitely was *not* under any kind of mind-control spell. But if there was a mistake to make, Jackson was likely to find it.

Hello Yoysten! Happy early 4th of July to you. I wanted to give you a cool "what if" scenario to explain in a future video. I wanted to know what you think would happen if the Istari had come during the 2nd age and played an active role in the war of the last alliance? Would Saruman still turn evil, will Isildur still claim the ring, how would the 2nd age of Middle Earth play out with the wizards involvement? I'm very excited and curious on what your thoughts are on the subject.
Hey! Thank you, you too! That is a great question! I think if the Istari had taken apart of the great alliance of Men and Elves, and stayed true to each other, Sauron would not have stood a chance. Possibly, if they had knowledge, wisdom and foresight enough for it, the Wizards could have convinced Men and Elves to destroy the One Ring, if it was at all possible. Those are my thoughts at least!

I have a question. Wasn't there a third age tale tale about someone in a boat who ended up in the Ice Bay of Forochel or something like that? I'd like to know more about that story.
Arvedui was the last king of Arnor. It was he who gave the ring of bwahir to the men in the north. His ship had the last two palantiri of Arnor, Annuminas and Amon Sul, both lost to the Ice in 1975 of the Third Age.
I love this series! Just like lembas bread in which one nibble can keep a Man on his feet for days, so too does the content of one video from Men Of The West, satisfy my Tolkien hunger for a week; if just barely ;)
This is a great video series! One difference (as in, the movies don't talk about it at all) that is in my opinion worth mentioning is about Common Speech and the language of the Rohirrim. With them, we have to differentiate between how it is given in the books and how it was actually spoken. This is different from Quenya and Sindarin; they are given as the elves would speak them, but the Common Speech is "translated" to English by Tolkien, as he pretends to be merely the translator of the Red Book and not the creator of these stories. Rohirric is related to Common Speech (and more closely to the Hobbit dialect) but more archaic, so Tolkien "translates" it as Old English to draw a parallel - Rohirric sounds to a speaker of the Common Speech like Old English sounds to a speaker of modern English. To give an example, in-universe the elves really say "Elbereth" (it's Sindarin that has no real-world equivalent, so Tolkien leaves the text "untranslated"), but they called Frodo "Maura" - Frodo is just a translation of the name, just like Rohan is actually called Lōgrad in-universe.
I've been binge watching this series in the past few days and I'm enjoying it a lot! Here's but a minor correction coming from a linguist who cannot help but mention such things: The plural of medium is media, not mediums. :)
Hey, just because you used so many pictures from Lotro, I found it worth mentioning, that in the game the "Horse and the Rider" poem is written in anglo-saxon on the floor of Meduseld - which is pretty neat, cause it explains why Aragorn knows that poem so well; he did ride with Thengel and had been to his hall and would have read the poem there many times.
I know it used to bug my wife and daughter when I'd say watching the movies, "But that's not how it happened!" But you know what: Despite this I still love the movies! Thanks for this series.
I feel like the journey through ithilien represents men fighting in a distant land during war and realizing that their home country is not so different from foreign ones that are ravaged by war. It acts as a warning to the consequences of the weariness of duty and what should happen if they fail.
This was the one bit in the film/book difference that irked me - I really didn't appreciate how they treated Faramir in the movie :( I understood WHY they did it, but I wasn't happy :(
Faramir posed a legitimate conundrum, though. His stoic refusal of corruption, while noble in the book, would kill the emotive impact of Frodo’s journey. Also creates a little B plot of his rejection by his dad... And I don’t think they had the narrative room to distinguish the strength of the Numenorian blood.
@@jackcoleman5955 nah, don't buy that weak defense of Peter Jackson's crappy character development. Only character who suffered worse than Faramir was Denethor himself.
@@jackcoleman5955 I hear what you're saying but have point out in the movie he never actually got the ring TO Denethor anyway, and his father's disaproval of him is present and obvious regardless of Faramir's intentions. Anyway, it seems to me if he had let Sam and Frodo go (like in the book with that stern warning not to trust Gollum) it would make it all the more obvious Frodo is losing control of himself later on.
Jackson's treatment of The Ents is one of his biggest betrayals of Tolkien's vision, IMHO. Its pretty much the point where my interest in the films began to wane.
@@tima5033 making them clueless as to Saruman's treachery, & making them unwilling to go to war, without Pippin tricking them. As bad a betrayal as the s**t they pulled with Faramir.
The language of the Rohirrim is not akin to Old English. Tolkien said he supplanted it with Old English to stimulate in the readers the feeling of almost understanding it yet couldn't that the hobbits would feel when hearing that language, much like he changed all Westron to modern(ish) English as the hobbits fully understand it.
Considering current events, would you ever do a video exploring Tolkien's views on race? A few not so great voices seem to hold LOTR and the Legendarium up as an example of either racism or as supporting racial superiority. I wonder if discussing things like Tolkien's letter to a German publisher pre-WW2, or his evolving views on Orcs, the fall of Numenor, or even Sam's thinking about the Southern Men (as touched on in this video) wouldn't be worth exploring. Controversial I know, but maybe necessary?
The Men of Gondor, that include Faramir and Boromir, were black haired. Why they made them both blonde is beyond Me. But there is no telling with Peter Jackson's reasoning.
You can't top Tolkien's March of the Ents. The Arwen scenes in TT and ROTK are painful as they clearly just eat up time from the actual book material. As a result, the new characters are all sidelined, which is a flaw FOTR does not have. TT and ROTK fall into the trap of over emphasizing the characters from the first film and not the new characters. Also it was a huge mistake to not end on Shelob. It's really absurd how much of the film ROTK is actually material from TT.
Wow, they really dropped the ball in portraying Edoras in the movie. Aside from the Hall, it was a completely depressing collection of primitive thatch and straw huts. I GET that they wanted to play up the sense of despair but I feel they should have been able to do that while showing the true nature of Edoras.
I can understand fans not liking Faramir being an antagonist in the movie, but at heart he is still a good person who is trying to do what is best to save his country and does do the right thing in the end. What one prefers comes down to a matter of preference. I do prefer Frodo in the movie wanting to save Gollum and Gollum actually trying to make a turn towards being good, it adds to the tragedy of Gollum's character.
Faramir is one of my favorite characters in the book, for his actions and abilities give some insight into just how "superior" the men of Westernesse really are, when their potential is realized.

What if everyone in the Lord of the rings universe had Lightsabers instead!! Just curious. 😉
That's frickin Obi-wan Kenobi 😂😂😂
Even if it had lightsabors it wouldn't be as bad as starwars
@@llkjjjss thank you master

Am I the only one who wants him to read an audio book of The Lord of the Rings .

What if
Thror defeated Azog
Isildor still lost the ring but survived
The elves helped the dwarves when Eribor fell
first
It would be great if the publisher came out with a Lord of the Rings Edition in the proper sequence rather then the way it was written
The movies are to different.
The movie scripts were written with a left writing foot. I never really cared for the movies.
