- Abandoned in a parking lot for 7 years, scavengers picked her parts. Tucked away in a barn for another 15 years, West Texas winds layered a fine carpet of dust onto her body. Irene had little chance of survival. Only one man could save this Hemi Orange Dodge Dart, and it took him over 20 years. Super Bill.

This makes me happy to see. My great grandmother had a 71 Swinger with a slant 6 and when she passed away she left it to my father who had visions of making it a 440. Sadly when he passed the car was sold and hasn’t been seen since
Love the 71 dodge dart, I grew up with one here in Scotland and my dad sold it after my grandad died, I deeply deeply wish we still had it, but i know i will never be one of those lucky people to have one in there life, I will never be in a financial position to get one, dad duties come first,

I'd bet the spare parts are in that building somewhere. The guy working on it that leased the buildings probably just set them off to the side somewhere. doesn't really matter I suppose, Ol' Bill doesn't even know how to properly put the key in the ignition, let alone restore a car. IMO.
For its size, the 318 was no slouch of an engine and could work really well at high revs without flying apart. Nice long lived engine.

The car was never a beast, though. It was a 318 two bbl with A/C. Uncommon but not rare and really not super desirable.

It would be a great car to convert into a Demon lookalike. It may not really be one but you could make it look like one. Much of the work is already done.

My 1970 Plymouth Duster 340 is sitting in a barn on my mom's farm. I intended to restore it and took it all apart about 25 years ago but then decided to spend the money to go to college instead. It's been sitting there waiting ever since.

All you guys have it wrong. This is a great video. Perfectly details why so many good cars went away. Poorly stored vehicle gets assaulted by the uninformed using haphazard methods resulting in needless damage, right before your eyes. This is easily the most painful of Jerry’s videos to watch. You can tell it wasnt a performance model because of engine color.Had it been the 340 it would have been orange.Still a nice find but I'm betting the mileage is 118k and not 18k.A car with 118k will look just as clean as 18k if taken care of.

I used to take my son to Mr. Gatties for games and pizza back when I lived in Amarillo, its what those coins are for.
Unlike a lot of other people on here I think the 18,000 recorded miles is right. The interiors on those don't seem to have been particularly high quality and the white ones in particular tended to get very tatty very quickly but that one still looks really good which would suggest low mileage. Another factor that suggests the recorded mileage is the fact that the digits on the odometer line up well, on vehicles that have been round the clock, i.e. have done over 100,000 miles on a 5-digit odometer the digits rarely line up nicely due to wear in the mechanism. The fact that this one does line up so well suggests that the recorded miles are right, though that doesn't necessarily mean that it's the original odometer, it may have been replaced at some time so it's showing original miles on that particular odometer. But, based on the condition of the interior and the general state of the body, which is pin straight, other than the area that has been repaired, which would be unusual on one of these with higher miles on it as they were pretty renowned for rusting horribly even in good climates, so I'd say it genuinely is that low a mileage. I suspect it might have been a grandma/grandpa car that wasn't used much and that the person gave up driving after bashing the rear quarter, then someone bought it to make something fun out of but the project stalled and it ended up as the story shows. It's certainly a cool, fun old car even if it isn't an original 340 car...

My first car was 71 swinger. The 318 in 1971 still had some power in such a light car. Tab on column releases key... knucklehead.
the first number of the mileage is not straight, so it has flipped in mileage. however so very awesome to watch. my fav car, my fav year of this car, my fav color.... i enjoyed it all. thanks for he upload.

At 55 Im probably a little younger than Bill and when I was in high school (late 70’s early 80’s) a dart of any variation was a non-starter or a girls car and could be had for well south of $1000.00... how times have changed

I grew up in that era. My brothers lived and breathed Dodge. My brother lost a Dodge Charger Purple plumb 440 to an underhood fire. Car burned to the ground. He replaced it with a Dodge Challenger 440 lime green and raced it every weekend. Sadly it sat and rotted away from Michigan rust. My other brother drove Dodge Darts, Dusters and Chargers. I miss going to the drag races as a kid. Those were the days!

I own a 69 GTS so I'm a Dart snob. Chrysler made things super easy to identify what you have. He said he knew it was a 1971 model. Dart swinger 340s were only produced in 1969 and 1970. Dual scoops and bumble stripe means it is a "clone" or "tribute" of some kind. Some 340 Dart Swingers were produced for the Canadian market in 1971 so that can't be completely ruled out until you look at VIN and fender tag. Best case scenario: you have a nice, low mileage 318 dart with (maybe) a transplanted 340 or 360. nice car but obviously they don't know anything about mopars.
The paint looks mint condition under all the dust, the under side of the trunk looks like it was just painted..!!! 👍👍👍

When I first told him on the phone he said no that the guy said it was a 340, then I told him the engine code is correct he agreed. Of course, those 318-powered Darts are real popular to modify with a 340.
Stroke and bore the 318. You will end up with more ci than a 340 and you will still retain a numbers matching car.
I knew it was a swinger right away. I'm not even a Dodge guy. I have buddies that would love that car.

Dodge did make a 1970 Dart Swinger 340...but ZERO came with sixpack from the factory. It still sounds like you had a nice car though.
Only mopars that came with 340 sixpacks were the 70'AAR cuda' and the 70'T/A challenger someone put that sixpack on yours, I have an original 70'swinger 340 4spd.
Had a 70 Dart Swinger 340 , 727 auto with 3:91 posi. Went overseas in 86 an within a year my Dad sold it for almost nothing! Still love my Dad, may he rest in peace, but I have always hated the fact he

6 pack dart convertible from Central Dodge in Springfield Mo and still own it to this day . My wife peferd the Challenger in 1970 440 6 pack which we still have as well, little back window over head console Dana rear.

I had a ‘69 Dart. 340. This was back in the 80’s. I drove it from Seattle to just into Idaho where it threw a rod. It was a fun car up to that point. After that it wasn’t much fun.

Speed 1971 and built in Windsor, Ontario. There’s a good chance I put the pistons in that engine. The engine plant was next door to the car assembly plant.
Also if it was a true 340 car, the hood would have about 3" holes under the hood scoops.. And when the car was in the shed it didn't have the wing on it. somehow the wing showed up when they where puling the car out of the shed, LMAO..

It also should not be titled "Muscle Car Barn Find" Cause its not a Muscle Car... The title is just to get Views, False Views !!! The title should be 318 Dart, Thought to be 340 Swinger. Also the Small Block that the Carter AVS was offered on was the pre 72 340's. So either the engine is a 318 with a 340 intake and carb, or its a 340 out of a 1971 or earlier car, which was a much better motor !! 1972 had a Thermo Quad Carb.. And now I see where he sets the wing on the trunk lid, My bad...
The exhaust Manifolds are not the correct ones for a 1971 340 to.. That style exhaust Manifold was used on 1972 and later.. 1971 also still had a steel crank and higher compression, 1972 340s did not. They had a cast crank with counter balancing in the harmonic balancer and torque converter.. But still a cool car to start with for a build..

71 Dart swinger 340 was only available in Canada, engine size is stamped in the block right below driver side cylinder head on the front, might be a 340 swap.
Correct, I believe two dealers pushed Chrysler to build them some 340 Swingers.
I'm pretty sure the 71 swingers were available with 340 in the US as well. If it's a Canadia car built in Detroit it will have a made in USA export tag on the radiator support.
72 was the Canada only 340 Swingers - not many of them made
Jerry Heasley 1971 340 swingers were only avail in Canada. Edmonton and Regina Dealer specially ordered 50 each. Only 100 built.

My first car was a 1975 Dodge Dart Swinger bought for $1,200 in 1996. My brother and I put a rebuilt engine in it, repaired some fuel lines, and I took to college my senior year. It was awesome! It was light blue with a white faux vinyl roof. It was lost in a major flood during hurricane Floyd in 1999.
Sounded like Jerry lost all interest finding out it wasn't the Factory 340 in there..Goodnight Irene! LOL

I can't believe old guys like this didn't remember that Chrysler products had a tab on the bottom of the steering column to release the key. I hope somebody who knows what they're doing ends up with this car before it's damaged any further.
That was for floor shift cars. Column shift cars, just turn the key. If the wheel was locked it would bind on the switch, turn the wheel a bit right or left to relieve the pressure on the lock
Well your just as big a dumb ass as them then....because there is no button on the bottom that you speak of on a mopar....dipshit.
Could very well have put it in upside down, if memory serves correct they only went in one way, but it was opposite to the other manufacturers.

It might be educational while you "know it alls" are talking smack about ole guys on here that have probably forgotten more than you've learned thus far in life. You wont find one key release on any mopar ever that had a column shifted automatic..... like this car in the video. ever......go look.

As soon as I saw the hoodscoop's I said to myself "Dart Swinger." Also I was a Mopar parts counterman for a "few" years.
I have a 77 Monaco coupe with a 360 and I got a reproduction wing for the deck lid and a Duster/ Demon hood scoop and put them on it along with Chinese made Super Bee and Scat Pack emblems and people go crazy over it! They think it's a real muscle car! In fact several people had a new one just like it! Same color and all!
That's a pretty good paint job to be in that good of shape and come back clean that easily

louis fisk rubbing the paint is the least of the worries. You obviously have never restored an older vehicle. Its going to need full body and paint to even come close to being factory.
Tell me about it they broke the key because darts had a button on top of the steering column that you have to push to release the key
@@billypoe5217 I had a '67, and a '69 Dart as well as a '70 Charger and none of them had a button to release the key. Most likely the key was put in the wrong way and got jammed.
I was thinking the same thing, Louis. At least when he put the rear seat on the roof he set it upside-down and not with the steel brackets digging into and cutting the vinyl roof.

Jerry Heasley I think what Franks trying to say is the term "Barn find" originally meant unrestored all original used car that was parked out in the barn and pretty much forgotten. The kind you find 70/80s stuff under the seats etc and time capsule if ya like. You wouldn't have said it referring to a car like in this video because this dart has been redone at some point and was driven until at least 99 then incredibly "abandoned" by previous owner. "Foreclosure find" maybe?

@Wayne - What do you mean? You think a Dart isn't a musclecar? 68 Hemi Dart is one of the fastest musclecars ever made. They did make some other big block darts, too bad this one wasn't a real ram air hood.
With a 340 cam, that AVS and manifold, and dual exhaust, that car would wake up and run really sweet.
Hahaha I grew up in junkyards. Every single Sunday, me and my cousins would go run around the yard a scrounge the new cars that just came in during the week. We’d come back with pockets full of filthy dirty change and trinkets. The occasional piece of Jewelry or something shiny. Hahahaha good lord those are some of the best memories of my childhood!! My cousin and I would always get in trouble for like locking our younger cousins inside of cars. After I went to work there at the age of 14. The junkyard lost all of its mystery and magic. That’s why four years later I left the land of grease and gas and stuff that doesn’t wash off. To become a carpenter and work with wood. I never looked back. Now I’m a 48 year old framer and life is just a little bit cleaner.
its a 1971 dodge dart swinger most of them came with a 318 engine but a few had the 340 from looking at the speedometer its a factory 318 car my husband loves dodge cars very few swingers came out with the 340 engine if that car has one your very lucky its still a great find either way

The 70s mopars have key releases on top of the column. You can even see it. You can also see the mopar build sheet in the rear seat still.
