Don't worry about it. I'm still trying to get my head round all of this atmos carry on anyway. The binaural translation is a little bit trickier than I first assumed

You'll be okay mate... relax the noo at least... your missus and the weanz will be feeling your feelings.... hope things will be good Paul, your right in all you said BTW.
Hope you're all good mate. One thing I can add as someone with ADHD.. Dopamine stacking is a serious problem for everyone, it's when you get locked in to what you love doing and you get lost in it, often alongside a coffee and no breaks. You can quickly burn through dopamine leaving you feeling like you need to do extravagant and over complicated mix moves (not to mention getting ear fatigue). It's a dangerous thing that leads to a cycle of repeated disappointments in mixed outcomes as well as the feeling that you just need that next piece of audio gear or plugin. When you run out of dopamine it leaves you at a below baseline level that you're just itching to bring back up which often makes us make the wrong decisions. Also as engineers we often have an outlook which focuses on looking for problems, instead we need to look for and amplify the best parts of a mix (and life). If we make our next mix purely about looking for the good and ignoring the bad you'd be surprised at how much better it sounded. Sorry for the essay 😂
Big up to you, Paul! Great advice! Every one should find a mentor and an accountability partner! Or set up a podcast and endlessly chat shit with your mate 😂
Good luck on the health stuff. 100% on taking extreme care with YooBoob as a learning strategy. There are some solid people BUT without a specific Master to lead you, you will likely fall into a spiral hole. You Master, if well chosen may only work in one style (I was trained in making AM Radio jingles) BUT what you learn - the moment you step past thinking it is knob positions - everything you learn is transferrable to whatever kooky sub-sub-sub-genre you find yourself in. I can fast-track a student and save them so much time money and frustration compared to the typical waste that happens when people crowdsource. It takes a different approach but the results are so much more useful in getting things done. :-)
Damn man, your channel blew up since I last saw. Nice one!!!! Don't worry about the MRI, everything will be good. There could be a hundred reasons why your liver is not functioning correctly for now.
Great advice Paul! It is certainly a difficult business to get into with all the possibilities that people have in their home studios nowadays. You need to offer something people just can't do at home, and ATMOS mixing could be such a thing. I don't know about the importance of live recordings nowadays, which needs a studio too. Fingers crossed.
It takes years and years to be great, decades, but this is not a bad news. If this thing was easy, everybody would be great. You didn't waste time. This is not a race. If you love what you do it doesn't matter. If you're doing it for the money (only) forget it.
Good advice paul :) My friend just went through the same and has come out of it cancer free and even if you get the worst news like he did if you have a positive attitude this will make a a massive difference. My best wishes to you and your family stay strong and positive and i am sure it will be ok.
Wow, Paul, you floored me with that opener. I really hope the news is good. Doesn't seem to make the audio world matter so much, but nevertheless a well said piece looking back, and I do agree with a lot of it, especially the trap of getting too invested in the nest of bragging and superficial twaddle on social media. There are too many people desperate to be noticed with their 'hot takes', and I only watch a few trusted ones, like your good self. Forging a career in audio is very tough and it just does take a long time, because the breaks are few and far between, and every tom, dick and harry think you can buy a computer, download cracked software and be a producer musician. So building a real career, like yours, takes time. But I am and always willl be impressed with your learning and evidence-based reasoning. So good luck with everything, and be good to see you back swearing and laughing again!
Excellent video. I got really lucky at the beginning of my career when I transitioned from a full-time muso to make friends with a guy who turned out to be one of the best engineers in my country, I didn't even know. I was really good with DAWs and plugins at the time, so we traded knowledge for technical help. He really set me up on my path, and we're still constantly helping each other out with info 25 years later.
great vid and all the best healthwise, mate! dont let stuff get y down, no matter what. being a family man is always takes priority. i tip my hat to ya. much love & thanks for the nuggets, mate
Hope your MRI goes well! Way more important. Great advice on the networking. I have grown weary of internet advice. It's just a place where everyone is hawking their wares. Not saying they all do and certainly some do have some good tips but the best advice I wish I gave myself 15 years ago was to use your ears and don't mix to a frequency analyzer. It's taken me so long to break those habits and now my mixes are a bit more organic and cohesive. Plugins are certainly a problem as they can only be as good as the person using them. It wouldn't matter if you have the best compressor on the planet if you don't know how attack, release, ratios, knee settings, etc work for certain instruments/types of music.
Amazing advice and video! Networking truly is everything! I’m in a new town now (portland) and I’ve been focusing on networking and i met some amazing and incredible engineers/producers who have already been saying positive things about me. Trying to be patient and explore the new studio spaces available to me here. Getting artists to work with has always been the challenge. I get some every year, but not enough to pay bills from. I really want to earn enough to survive, which is easier with the lowest amount of expenses I’ve ever had now. Building up a studio space myself in the basement of where I’m staying now and i gotta wait on some stuff before i can set up (specifically a desk coming in July). Also hope it’s not cancer ❤. Be well!
Hi Paul. They might just be being extra cautious because of you're age and it'll hopefully turn out to be a common cyst or something. Was it blood enzyme tests that raised the alarm? All being well... I wonder if you've tried Acustica Lava yet. Seems like a pretty useful tool, some impressive reviews. Good luck!
I recently got the same news. Just a quick phone call from the hospital saying " Oh by the way, we think you may have liver cancer ". " Oh ok, i'll just go about my day then ? " . I hit quite a dark space. For 3 weeks i layed there thinking " Oh well that's me, I'm fucked ". In the 4th week , the hospital called. " Sorry, there was a speck of shit on the lens...., my bad " ! " Oh that's ok we all make mistakes "..........Faaarrrkkk ! I know where you're at Paul. Fingers crossed , that spec of shit has relatives in the UK mate.
That's why you pay people that put out work that you respect. If you can't strike up a relationship with them then try and study them. Trying to get a good tutor for free is pissing in the wind but if you offer to pay them for their time you may find it opens a door
Good luck at the screening, I hope you don't have cancer! Networking is the key to success. Working is the key to getting good. But networking also affects getting good and working also affects success. I'm really only a great mixer on the material I produce myself. Give me a limited time (like 1-2 days) and a track with live instruments from a genre I'm not very familiar with and I will still make rookie mistakes in terms of the overall balance. Getting familiar with a limited amount of key tools was an essential part in my development. And whenever I produce in a new genre, it takes me about 20-30 productions to "get it". Of course the first productions are occasionally great too and rarely trash, but it's only after many productions that the results become good or even great on a regular basis.
What Ive learned is make the best of your time and stop wasting it on shit that doesn't matter. I've wasted a lot of time on a lot of shit in the past haha
@@PaulThird Haha, that's true Probably one of the realest and most effective takes for anyone on the planet. I'm still wasting some time occasionally. Hoping you're good!
Tests are just precautionary to rule out worst case scenario. you'll be alreet don't worry about it :) I've had 4 MRI head scans myself, lemme tell ya when your heads right in the belly of that machine its so fucking loud!! 🤣
@@PaulThird 100% the scan happens in like 5 minute sections and I’ve had to redo a sections a couple times during scans cause my head flinched when the insane noise started up again 😁 just means it’ll take a bit longer , at least there’s no harm done like with an X-ray/CT scanner . Best thing to do is tell the operator and they have extra cushions to pack the body part in more tightly to reduced risk of movement
Hope all goes well for you Paul! If you do get some bad news, lean into it and figure out what’s next. You’ve been pushing forward for what’s next anyway. Just another step forward. I’ll be thinking of ya🤘

Paul, I do this for almost 40 years, besides beeing a lawyer. You are right, my best learning curves was working with other producers and engineers in the studio, and theirs.
