Here is what I'd guess at, as a long-time viewer: Sonimus Britson, Sonible Smart EQ, Tim P.s compressors, God Particle, Kirchhoff EQ, Wavesfactory Trackspacer, Master Plan (this one is new to me).
      Here are mine:
As a producer: Ableton Live Suite (DAW), IKM MODO Bass, IKM MODO Drums, Amplesound M, Amplesound SC, Nomad Factory Motown EQ, Softube Mutronics Mutator, Softube Chandler Limited Germanium Comp, Eventide H910.
As a mixer: Kirchhoff EQ, Split EQ, Track Spacer, Motown EQ, Weiss DS1-MK3, Smart EQ, Classic Clipper, Transient Shaper, White 2A, Bus processor.
I know I cheated, but I think it's fair to have 10 for each hat.

Hey Paul, hope you are doing well, and congratulations on the new studio, although I’m no audio engineer, I totally agree with you, it’s a basic thing, if your monitoring is bad then mixes will be bad, no plug in will save you. Actually I just upgraded my interface, a topping e2x2 as recommended by you, not a top notch interface but I’m sure it’s better then what I have atm, a very old Mackie Onyx Blackjack with more then 10years old, btw I do everything on headphones. Thanks for the videos you post on RUclips, very helpful, cheers

You don't need to apologize for not creating content. No one in their right mind would blame you for prioritizing the work that is clearly your calling. Hearing your mixing exercises in Produce Like A Pro made me enjoy the songs as if they were mixed by a top engineer, which made me realize your potential is real. I see no reason top labels and artists could not benefit from your instincts, thoughtfulness, good taste and, obviously, a great ear. So, who needs more plugins anyway?

I think when I first got on you tube not long ago like I am today, I misunderstood how a lot of people trying to sell and or talk you out of buying plugins seemed strange. I use plugins as tools. I only use them when I need them. Sure, I got a lot of plugins now BUT any time I need anything I need to do something, it's right there to make it work. I am also a floor installer who does his own Mechanic work for my vehicles. All my tools I have just sit mostly BUT they sure do help if you have something when you need that certain something. LOL I hear ya. Its time to get busy. I got TONS of music man... TONS...... I play every instrument. I used to be lead guitar in a metal band but that's not all I play by far. Do what you have to to get yourself where you want to be. My old mixes were SO SO BUT lately man I have been on it. I just need to finish these ideas and maybe get a Channel going for music and what I used to make it or something I don't know...

Fantastic. I come from an era , where we didn't have plugins . Automation was 4 guys on the desk mixing well into the "idiot hour ". All very hit and miss ? Yes , but human and exciting. There are hundreds of plugins at my disposal , but in reality , i use 5 or 6 . I still love the sound and value of outboard gear. I used to remove all the clocks in the place . If we spent more time on an album than prescribed , it was because the finished article was going to be worth it sonically . There are so many devices today , that we don't really need. Total distraction. I couldn't agree with you more. One thing that annoys the shit out of me is, everyone running around yelling " it glues the mix " . Horseshit ! The most noticeable thing for me in modern mixes is the lack of separation . People shove a thousand noises onto tracks and then " glue it " , then face a shit fight trying to re-establish detail. I may sound like i don't like modern mixes , but when i hear a track where the music plays support to a kick drum , i want to stick an electric drill into the engineers ears !

I realised a long time ago that most of the plugin industry is just marketing and hyperbole to sell plugins. I stopped reading reviews and now just concentrate on the plugins I own, and unless something new and amazing comes along I won't be buying any more. I don't need another LA-2A emulation or tape saturator.

  • @marksaxon

Yeah great points. I'm at the place where I roll my eyes at another new compressor, eq, limiter, channel strip, etc. I've already purchased more than I will ever need (and I'm kind of ashamed). Demo plugins if you can before you buy and compare them to what you already have. I'm spending more time mixing and determining out of what I have are my go-to plugins and then ignoring the other ones. I have them if for some reason I feel like I need something different but I'm at the point where I'm using like the same 3-4 compressors, 1-2 channel strips, 1-2 tape emulations, etc. Delays and reverbs are the one area that is tough since those can vary in color/style and can interact differently across styles of music.

I used to obsess over plugins for years, does it sound analog, if i could re-create the curves and so on and whatever. In the end it's all about the music and how it makes you feel. Most of the hit songs, even my or your favourite songs probably have 20 yo plugins, cramping eq's all over them. I can't remember what video on YT I watched but the best advice was to delete all the plugins except the ones you really use and know the ins n out of.

Depends on what plugins you use. If you use a lot of saturation and analog emulations then you will most likely hear a benefit due to decrease in aliasing and less audible phase shifts in top end due to niquist being shifted up an octave.
However if you use mainly pro q3 and use plugins that have high qualify oversampling then you won't hear much of a difference

Would you recommend to not start a plugin comparison channel these days?

    • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  2 месяца назад +2

I've done more than just plugin comparisons but plugins are a big distraction as it involves a lot of prep, testing and normally working on the same multitracks and stuff for ease and consistency.
Reviewing plugins doesn't benefit my career any more unless it involves talking about plugins that I'm actually using day to day.
New plugin releases hardly ever give the audience the opinion of someone who has extensively used it for like 6 months. Normally you've got 2-3 weeks if the dev has sent you a license prior but for many channels it's gonna be a case of get a demo, try it for a day, record half arsed examples next day, record the video, spend the next day editing, crack a video out. Whole process can sometimes take 3-4 days. If you do a plugin video a week, when you actually got time to mix?
Comparisons end up being the biggest waste as it has no benefit to you, none whatsoever. If you are comparing plugins then you definitely aren't mixing, you are matching curves, level matching etc etc days wasted all so people can argue online about their confirmation bias. Doesn't help you or them. Just confuses them more

monitors and headphones will 100% bring you to the audiophile territory whether you want it or not. at a point you will start to listen to the equipment more than you listening to the audio because you are subconsciously doing that 16 hours per day how hard you try not to do it. To say it's beyond our control is just ridiculous I know, but not many get out of it alive without becoming a self-certified audiophile. You see, not a single person on earth just wake up one day and randomly choose to be an audiophile but... we got a million of them today but at least half of them can't admit it even after spending 15k on their new bookshelf speakers that sounds more or like the same with their last 3 pairs. It's genuinely funny how you go into "mockney" when you're mocking a particular viewpoint, it's interesting that you associate that accent with "being wrong about stuff" 🙂. The real pisser in this pursuit of perfection is when you realise that, as you inevitably age, your hearing becomes worse and worse and you can't hear a lot of what your speakers are presenting. At every present moment in time, this is the very best your hearing is ever going to be... Aaaggghhhh! That hearing of the high end detail will evaporate soon enough. It's a lesson though and acceptance will only ever result in a more content life. Still, look at all the greats still knocking it out of the park, Bob Clearmountain, Ed Kramer, CLA and all the rest. Their hearing is considerably less than it was when they first started, but they're still going strong. Don't get me started on Tinnitus! Love your stuff mate, all the best to you.

One compromise might be to focus on the plugins you do use, where & why/how. Maybe mention the new plugins that you substitute for previous ones. As an extension of what you were saying about not always needing plugins, I'm actually more into stuff about getting the sound right while recording now, like microphone choice, angles, etc, rather than fixing things afterwards with EQ. I suspect it would be a massive time-saver especially in your own studio, finding sweet spots for drums, etc. It's interesting to read early studio recording techniques, when they didn't have much gear and they really had to think about mic' placement and isolation panels, reflections, amp settings, etc. I think I'd even still try to record bands as a group, minus the vocals & solos. I remember finding playing my parts with headphones on, listening to the ghost track was just nothing like playing together. The ghost tracks were way more natural sounding & energetic than the overdubbed parts combined. This is also how studios got so much done in the early days, but I suppose musicians were much better rehearsed back then.

But THEN... +once in a blue moon+ you stumble across a plug-in that DOES +legitimately+ change everything for you, and DOES make your mixing 50% better.
It re-ignites that thought/doubt you have that MAYBE there IS +another+ plug-in out there that will, with a single knob turn, actually improve your mixes in a way that would have taken months to learn otherwise.

This is an interesting evolution to hear from another engineer. I went through this same process over a decade ago and decided I needed to switch towards getting better studio monitors. Friend of mine was into the Hi-Fi world as well as pro audio and convinced me to go to a Hi-Fi convention. There was a big difference in quality back then between studio monitor quality and Hi-Fi quality. I turned to him and said I want to make something that has this quality but the functions a studio needs. A couple of years later we ended making our own monitors. Because quite frankly we didn’t like any else out there. Haven’t looked back! I’ve made a few pairs for some engineers and producer friends of mine that were convinced they wanted them in their studios. Have fun during this phase. Lots of good products out there these days. Have a good set of hi-end reference songs to playback on each speaker test.

The best plug-in company is universal audio and that’s only because they study hardware to the point where they can replicate eq curves saturation and compression of the actual hardware, there are no tubes, circuits etc that give plugins the aesthetic is plugin users. so desperately desire. That being said plugins are getting very accurate in replicating hardware, however aliasing still seems to be a problem but there’s a change coming soon just don’t know what it is

The amount of acoustics advice I've had to throw out in order to get a usable mixing environment is ridiculous. Also, if you're sensitive on the high end, then be careful with headphones. Tinnitus may appear suddenly. I'm noticing the start of a backlash against excessively detailed monitors because they are not representative of the typical listening environment. Some hit records are now being mixed on budget (but reasonably neutral) monitors in supposedly non-ideal setups. The big main monitors now serve as studio ornaments like the large format analogue consoles of the past.

    • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  2 месяца назад

Headphones have nothing to do with tinnitus. Mixing at overly loud spl levels for long durations does. It's all relative to sound levels and duration

    • @womagrid

@@PaulThird Of course. I found it's easier to overdo things on headphones, that's all. Obviously there are other reasons to mix at lower volumes, like delaying the onset of ear fatigue.

I love that you're spending some time on trying out speakers. As I've stated repeatedly, I believe mixing on speakers (or at least checking on them) will be a good thing for you. Plugins really haven't been bothering me for a couple of years now and I believe I have you to thank for this development. Even the couple instruments and reverbs I still know I want (and have been wanting for years) are still not getting bought, because I simply put my money in other areas. And surprise, surprise: I still get my music produced just fine without them. I put more of my money in things like advertising, (prettier) room treatment, a new chair, etc. now. It may sound nuts, but prettier room treatment is something that makes every day a little better. Functionality is the bare minimum, but art/life without aesthetics is like sex without emotion. It's a long time and a lot of practice to master anything! But, I really don't like the word 'master'. As it implies that whatever it is you're putting your time into, that it is a task that can be "completed". And that doesn't apply to everything. Playing a musical instrument, producing, mixing, mastering.. is never ending and ongoing, always a new style or technique to try.. and then there's improv - writing and performing music on-the-fly in realtime, without rehearsal. (Just that 10,000 hours of practicing you put in getting good enough to play in real time!
"10,000 Hour" is only a quotation that was coined in the book “Outliers: by Malcolm Gladwell", there's nothing inherently special or scientific about that number..
So, I decided long ago that if I was going to learn and 'master' something. Then I would have to adjust the mentality surrounding the idea of 'practice'. Because I have ALWAYS hated the word and the very premise of practice. Ever since starting piano age 5/6. "Do some practice" was a phrase often heard in my house said by my mother.
So, as an adult - I took on the mentality of enjoying *the journey* and *not* having a target,! And, keep moving the target backwards, so I am always moving forward and having somewhere to aim.
Compared to.. I picked up Guitar in lockdown 2019 and I practice every day with ease because I enjoy the way I practice.. and whatever 'level' I am at, I am enjoying the journey of learning. I think it helps that I started improv practice straight away - so a lot of my practice is ear training and playing by ear, so I can pretty much noodle my way to playing any song I want to a certain degree by ear.
What is it that I am doing when I open my DAW and mess about trying to make tracks, trying every plugin, playing with all the controls, writing my own chord progressions that sound absolutely whack... That is the very definition of 'practice'.
It's about mindset. If I had sat and 'messed around' on the piano, without fear of failure, without aiming for perfection. I would have progressed infinitely faster than my actual piano career because often I avoided doing anything at all because it had no joy in it. 20 minutes just with the keys under your fingers, is better in every way than not touching the piano AT ALL. Which was my default.
Playing a piece for an exam required rote repetition of bar after bar after bar, endlessly. Until you're just a machine, playing back a midi file. I can't even remember any of the songs that I learned to play for exams, because I didn't even like them. Anything that I've taught myself to play by ear because I enjoy the piece - no trouble whatsoever/

You make a lot of sense. While making music is for me something I love and I have no need or desire to make money from it or achieve any level of fame I like the things I do to sound as good as I can make them. Because of my circumstances proper monitors are not an option so headphones is what I use. The best investment I made was Neumann NDH 30 cans and Topping A30 Pro headphone amp. Used with SoundID Reference and CanOpener I really like the results I get. I am doing my best to cut down on the number of plugins I use and feel that doing more with less is then way to go.
