As a Queens resident who lives near LGA and often drives on the Whitestone Expressway, I love watching these big commercial planes bank as they line up for their final approach. And that's my Home Depot at 1:20 (lower right).

You are flying the Expressway Visual to Runway 31. I have flown this approach many times as the captain of a Boeing 757, and it was challenging, but great fun! It is one of those rare times an airline pilot gets to fly like we would a Cessna or Piper, hand flying while maneuvering to the runway. If flown purely visual, the procedure was to fly to the Maspeth gas tanks in Brooklyn, crossing them at 2500 feet, then make a right turn and follow the Bronx Queens Expressway to near Citi Field while descending to 1000 feet. Abeam Citi Field, we would make a huge left turn at low altitude to line up with Runway 31. You knew you were on the correct vertical profile if you were just slightly below the top deck of the Citi Field stadium when making the turn to final. Of course, this approach could also be flown using high tech RNAV and VNAV, and letting the autopilot fly the approach. But REAL pilots took the opportunity to hand fly it using only the visual cues. I had to retire at age 65 in 2015, but still vividly recall every detail of this approach with fond memories. Thanks for posting and letting this old pilot relive his glory days!
Thanks for sharing your experiences. The Maspeth / Elmhurst gas tanks were demolished in 2001, and Citi Field was built in 2009. So it would have been Shea Stadium at the time, if flying using the gas tanks as a landmark. Also, the flight path follows the Long Island Expressway, not the "Bronx" Queens Expressway. (There's a Brooklyn Queens Expressway, but it travels north-south, west of LGA.)

I went to St John's U, class of '81. I was always amazed that planes could make that ridiculous turn directly over my head on the Whitestone Pkwy and still land safely. Great vid!
Passed citifield to the left. I went there recently and you have a perfect view of aircraft landing on rwy 31

That turn can be scary over Flushing Meadows Park with coming in over the nation's largest city and landing on only 7G runway. Loved the one going out on Runway 4. I think the best is the River visual coming up the Bay and Hudson with the best views of Manhattan if you get a clear day with the hook over The Bronx into 22. Great job fellas.

OSTARAEB4 I flew from o’hare to LGA in the summer at night and we circled around Manhattan a couple of times, it was stunning.
While I wish you hadn't cut it off before the aircraft had slowed down/exited the runway, that wish does not detract from how awesome this video is. :D
WOw awesome video! SO many things going on during this approach especially the departing aircraft just before touchdown (which is a normal thing at LGA).

WWWOWWWW...this is quite a relaxing video to watch..big big big time....what real gorgeous technicolor and such high quality videography of the gorgeous landing at LGA..((right from the cockpit too)) on that warm mild SAT 1/19/13... BTW...last time I landed at LGA was way way back on 2/22/67...via the Boston Eastern Shuttle..in a 727-er....that's right..over 48 years ago...I remember it very well.... and of course....RUclips had a long LONG way to wait to finally exist from way back then........ heeeheee

So good to hear, ''Flaps Flier''....I have just turned 10 at the time...so one can guess at to how young I am today...and I flew inside a Lockheed Connie on the way TO Boston from LGA 2 days earlier...Anyways...727's have been flying since 1963...right after the 707s and the DC8's... YASVW for my watching your own AWESOMED video...which is so enjoyable....and BTW.... LGA airport has given me such fond memories..since I used to drive a cab there and JFK many times since 3/19/78((you notice I am VERY GOOD with DATES)).. as I lived in Port Washington LINY many years ... till we moved here to southern RI over 29 years ago, 9/3/86. BTW..I have a lot of videos of Tstorms((I got some big ones this year alone))
I recently landed at Laguardia in some pretty heavy cross winds....That turn over the baseball stadium is pretty scary during windy conditions.

Flew as a passenger on this same path yesterday. Why can't the plan come on a straight path and land as opposed to making this sharp last minute turn? Reminds me of Kai Tak approach in HK
would most likely conflict with traffic from JFK and departures like the delta you saw before they landed also this is quicker than having to vector traffic around the airport to set them up for a longer straight in approach
@@madmax232 And \ or this approach minimizes the amount of time the planes are low over VERY densely populated areas of Queens.
Growing up as a child about two miles from the airport it was always fun to go to the supermarket at 78th Street and 31st avenue and watch the planes come in over Jackson heights at about 200 ft altitude just before they cross Astoria Boulevard immediately followed by crossing over Grand Central Parkway, immediately before landing on Runway number 4.. in later years as an adult, I recall a few times landing on to runway for in the midst of a nighttime thunderstorm. Now that was exciting, let me tell you

I noticed that the approuch before the Park is very straight, right before the long u-turn.
I am from Poland🇵🇱 and here in Europe we dont have landings like this. The only highlight here is the London City Airport were you land between skyscrapers.
I would like to visit the USA one time. Maybe in Winter.
I imagine LGA is an airport where the ATC staff REALLY have to pay attention and be mentally alert at ALL times. One little miscalculation or lapse of judgment on their part and the results could be disastrous. I imagine it's equally challenging for the pilots who may need to react very quickly to avoid a collision if ATC makes a mistake.
You are right, but pilots also had to be very skilled to land at LGA. I was a pilot for United on the 757/767 based at JKF for 15 years and routinely flew into and out of LGA. Even though I have flown all over the world, I consider La Guardia to be one of the most challenging airports of all. While it has two 7,000 foot long runways, that 7,000 feet goes by so fast when landing than when I finally brought my 757 to a stop, there was never a lot of runway remaining. But that said, it was my favorite airport because it constantly challenged my professional flying skills.
@@MrSuzuki1187 I lived in NY during my teen years and yes, pilots have to be very skilled to be able to land at LGA, especially Runway 31. And you also have high winds to deal with on the runways.
Believe me, I have the utmost respect for pilots who are able to handle getting into Runway 31. I've been a passenger on flights coming into LGA many times and it looks hard even when you're just a passenger.
The city made it even more challenging by allowing those humungous blue buildings to be built by the Number 7 train line. You're only 500 feet above the ground and those buildings are almost halfway up to that height and you have to go right over them.
You have to wonder what the developers were thinking when they designed those buildings.

My thought at first, but the GPWS callout isn't the same. SWA doesn't have 40 or 20 foot callouts. Definitely a 737 though.

Tzadik Vanderhoof They do that to keep the flow of planes going in and out quicker. Also, the fact that LGA only has two runways instead of the four runways at JFK. Fun fact, if you were wondering: New York has the second busiest air space in the world! Thanks for watching.

I've flown jumpseat in the -80 and that's not what this is. My first captain assignment was on the 737, and judging by the trim noise and the vortex generators in front of the windshield, I'd bet my last buck that this is a 737. You can argue about what version of the next gen it is.

Arthur Yagudayev You live there in the 1970's? Engines were a lot louder then! Lots of 727s and 737s (with the old thinner and noisier) power plants! Hard to watch Mets games on TV! Jet noise would drown out the announcers for 20 seconds or so every couple of minutes!

There was a plane taking off on the intersecting runway. Someone gave the wrong command to one or both of these planes.

This was one of the worst approaches into LGA I have ever seen. First of all, the video looks like it was filmed with a film camera (maybe it was). I have seen thousands of landings onto runway 31 and never an approach like this that took multiple turns to line up. Well, not to impugne but I am gonna, Delta. That figures.
It was 11yrs ago tho.

To be a pilot you have to spend a lot of time to get your pilots license. If that is an issue, I would suggest drone flying or joining the Air force or the Navy. Best of luck :)

La Guardia airport should be relocated away from the center of the city! It is too close to the commercial and residential areas of Queens NYC ... This is people lives that they are risking ... LGA is a time bomb ticking away ...
