As much as I do love Charles, I think Frank was by far much more fun and satisfying to watch them be cruel to. Also, Trapper was soooo much better and funnier than BJ. Much more handsome too.
I disagree .. I think Winchester was much better than Burns .. Might have been a pompous arrogant SOB .. But least he was human... Frank never evolved past being a parasite .. No offense to the parasites. :D

Agreed. And-when he left, along came a Winchester-Major Charles Emerson Winchester...the Third, to be exact. He was kinda like Frank Burns in some ways...but different in some ways, too. Major Charles Emerson Winchester was his own special "Brew" of a person. In at least a couple of ways, he did some things that Frank Burns could never do. After all, he was the one who got rid of that ridiculous Colonel Flagg! And, at times, he could actually be... gracious. Mostly, though, he was the snooty Major, that Pierce and Hunnicut had fun with...but there are a couple of times, when their chicanery backfired on them, courtesy of Major Winchester. It was all in good fun. I miss those days... watching, laughing, and learning. M*A*S*H was one of the funniest, zaniest, and, at times, most heart-wrenching, shows that I've ever watched!
American telly showed it with the laugh track, BBC 2 in the U.K. showed it without - the DVD, I believe, offers two versions - one with the laugh track, one without! If you watch it with the laugh track, the “audience” aren’t let into the operating theatre! When comedies were performed in front of an actual audience, an announcement would say “(Programme name) is filmed before a live audience!”. Well - they couldn’t film it before a DEAD one!
They had a patient with Hepatitis, and they thought Frank had given it to the patient. Ipso-facto, they needed his blood tested to insure he wasn't contagious.
That came later in the episode. The initial blood draw was because they had a North Korean patient who had AB neg blood, and Frank was the only person in the camp with that blood type. Frank, being the original Tea Partier, wouldn't donate blood to an enemy solider so they did the draw without his knowledge. The patient later shows Hepatitis symptoms so they need to check Frank to see if he has it. They don't do another blood draw, instead they fake the latrine being closed (Radar tells him they're redecorating) and they get Frank to pee into a bucket to get another sample.

I prefer without the track. So I can just let my emotions flow with the story of the episode. I'll laugh if there's funny things or be a little sad during a sad part.dont need that fake laugh every 5 seconds to cue me to laugh
Just my personal opinion but I didnt think Wayne Rogers portrayal of Trapper John was good. Elliot Gould in the original MASH movie was much better, livelier and funnier. On the show I felt BJ was a better character as his replacement.
Larry Gelbart and Alan Alda just had a great relationship as far as writer and actor goes. Rogers got less and less to work with as the 3 seasons progressed. Alda and Rogers had great relationship off of the show and great chemistry on but it wasn't 50-50 like it was supposed to be originally. That's Gelbart's fault for not letting Rogers' charm shine. Rogers left the show because of it. Although he claims other reasons dealing with contract issues. He was great on the show "House Calls" that would've lasted longer if Lynn Redgrave hadn't left the show due to dispute involving her pregnancy. By the time Farrell got on MASH Alda had started to take over the show and maybe allowed Farrell some more character development with his being a devoted husband blah blah. But the show became less humorous.
I mean this with no disrespect because it's just a TV show that came and went over 40 years ago. I could not disagree more. Trapper was awesome. BJ was by order of magnitude the worst character on the show.

While the show would be made better if filmed without accounting for a laugh track, since they added breaks for the laugh track, it kills the rhythm

Elliot Gould played it sleazy but smart. Rogers played it more goofy but smart. Movies and TV are different media.
