I liked how the stage only had chicken-wire at the front, so the sax-player can jump into a fight.
My favorite part about the original Roadhouse is when Patrick Swayze jumps off of something. It was so beautiful and graceful. It was like a swan.
Cuz Patrick Swayze could actually fly.

I like Paul Smith as Bluto in the 1980 film. He was also great in Midnight Express, Dune (1984), and Crime Wave, the first Cohen Bros movie. Connor MacGregor isn't even an actor.

The original Roadhouse is an objectively "bad" movie but it works ENTIRELY due to the actors involved. Everybody on that one, particularly Patrick Swayze was bringing their A game to a D script. There's no way you're going to recreate that with different actors.

Ya original sucked, people liked Swayze, hot chick, violence, throat rip out season. Not much else. Top Gun was bad but people love it anyway too.

Yeah. First Roadhouse had charismatic leading characters and did pretty good world building. It was still a dumb film, but fun to watch. Swayze just owned that film.
This movie was a chore after the first half. Once Conner entered the film it just was all over the place. I don’t even know Conner’s motivation.

Since I watched the trailer, I've been feeling that this comes off like an American Bollywood film, with the over-the-top action with one hero fighting off 10 men at once, goofy characters like the funny henchman, the cannon fodder henchmen with no thoughts, and the cartoonish villains, an under-developed romantic plot, and an absurd overall plot of some guy deciding to put his life at risk for complete strangers.

I’m so glad they kept the absurd violence in the movie. The best part is the moment when a random guy shouts “BAR FIGHT!” And immediately random people start whipping each other’s asses like cartoon characters. I LOVED this silly ass movie!
It's at that moment that I realized that it was basically a live-action cartoon 😅

They said the gangster father had built this town. Built schools and local businesses. But I got the impression there wasn't anything but a bookstore, gas station, hospital, police parking lot, and a bar. We never saw a town. Why would anyone pay to visit the bus stop on the way to South Beach.
That swagger he's got is comical. I mean he looks the part but he's a terrible actor.
Waiting to see, but have one slight issue. Think they should’ve kept Dalton mysterious. The original never answered any questions like where’d he learn to fight? Why was he a bouncer? Feel this is a major part of what makes the character and movie so timeless. This remake, by explaining so much, I think may have dated its lasting appeal. Hope I’m wrong.
Actually in the original Roadhouse Sam Elliot taught him how to fight and Dalton was a bouncer who tried to avoid violence after he killed a man in a street fight.
Road House (1989) is one of my most favorite guilty pleasure movies of all time. These other movies are dead to me because in no way will they ever achieve the perfect recipe of redneck + cheese + schlock of the original. #PainDontHurt
Just watched it. It started off good enough, but when McGregor shows up, it definitely goes downhill from there. Still entertaining, but it did go off the Rails come the 3rd Act.

Anyone think Hollywood will ever get these sequels and remakes out of their system and make something original? Patrick Swayze was Roadhouse. I get that having a familiar title and some pretty boy actors help sell a movie, but Hollywood is getting so lazy. I've seen Roadhouse - the real version. I don't need to see someone else play that role. J
aden Smith and Jackie Chan are both good at what they do, but I didn't need to see them basically recreate what Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita did so well. Whether it's a white guy or someone of a different colour, Hollywood needs to show their actors more respect and give them original parts that they create. What used to happen is that someone's first bit hit that made them a star was a character they defined. Macchio was and is the Karate Kid.
This isn't about woke. If anything, it's about a studio not getting behind their actors, white or black, to the point that these poor people are going to be remembered for doing something someone already did - and usually better. These young actors and actresses should be remembered for creating iconic and original characters in movies with good scripts. But they won't be, because Hollywood wants the cheap, easy way to a box office hit, and they're the pawns. There are no risky movies anymore that pay off. Just as we're starting to get more diversity into movies, which is long overdue, conveniently we're seeing less originality.
I'm white, but that sounds pretty offensive to me, of you're a black or brown person or a woman. You don't get to create something cool and original on your own. You have to be the "black" or "female" version or something already done a million times before.
So here’s the thing about the original vs remake debate that kinda annoys me. Hollywood produces more original movies now then it ever did in the years before 2000 (around when all these remakes started). Now are there more remakes and sequels? Sure. But that’s because there are more films as a whole produced and distributed now than before. And original films still make up the bulk of films released. People just don’t see them.
I mean I never needed diversity since there's tons of Hispanic media without Hollywood. They truly live in a bubble if they think other folk aren't represented already.
We have plenty of original movies. Nobody goes to see those. They would rather complain about how there are no original movies.
Your point about what *_”these poor people are going to be remembered for…”_* falls flat when speaking of Jake Gyllenhaal or any other known/famous actor with a slew of other movies under their belts.

lol come on dude. Road House 89' is a BAD movie. It's entertaining but half the fun of road house is just sitting around with a buddy and poking fun at it. It's a movie that takes place in a world where bouncers are mythical figures known nationwide and the most mythical one of all is tasked with cleaning up a bar literally called the double shit. It is so not fucking Jaws.

Dalton in the original demanded 5000 a week and that was because he was the best professional bouncer, who's a legend In cleaning up bars. It seems like no one remembers that, he got rid of shitty employees, and made the remaining ones more professional, they even ended up wearing uniforms and treating the job more seriously.
Yeah this was different and that's ok. It's not disrespecting the original. It's just paying a tribute to the basic concepts. It seemed like everyone was having fun making this so I liked it.

Totally agree. JG was great, but McGregor spoilt this movie. Rampage Jackson and Ronda Roussey were way better cross-over actors.
I wish they switched out mcgregor with an actor less known that would put in the body work like Jake to match the character. Mcgregor just seems like some unkillable cartoon character that always seemed to take little to no damage from combat. He was very out of place.

I love the original Road House, it’s so good and Patrick Swayze was amazing. I can see Connor McGregor sucking the air out of this movie because I feel he sucks the air out of just about everything.
The writers and studio needed to be slapped for making this ...
McGregor nearly ruined it for me. I was really enjoying it up until his OTT entrance. He got some good redeeming moments to be fair but thankfully he wasn't in it THAT much that it became too overbearing. The final fight scene bugged me a bit in that you could see McGregor tapping on Jake when it was time to move a leg out of the way etc to get to the next move. I still really enjoyed it. Gyllenhaal doesn't make bad movies he's a brilliant and full on Actor and he was by far the best thing in this. Edit: the name of the store next to the book shop is the 'Double Deuce' which was the original name of the club in the original Swayze movie.

They should have cut the nurse out. Make the book shop a family run boat tour of the keys so the whole Fred the tree makes some sense, and he still gets access to a boat. Combine the daughter with the love interest if needed. Why keep the surgeon love interest and throw out the throat ripping?

I stopped watching because of how that love interest came about…going to try again just for Jake and this review. But that was just annoying.

Literally just about anything beats the original.
I feel like the original Roadhouse was more about the bar and its workers and this one is more about Dalton and his struggles to overcome them.
Like in the original you care about the blind singer and you care about the other bouncers. You tend to watch as Dalton becomes that change they needed.
In this version we get a montage showing he is teaching them tips....but then immediately we move on. I don't even know the bartender or other bouncers names.
I feel like even though the story is 2 hours, it feels like Vin Diesels xXx movie rather than Roadhouse. An action "MAN!" film with girls and lots and lots of punching lol.

That was my thought. A cartoon villain isn’t a bad thing as long as it is entertaining to watch. From what I have seen it looks like the Conor scenes are at least entertaining.

You're probably right. Of course, given your keen powers of observatissue, but keep in mind the writer writes a story. The director/cinematographer sets up all the shots and films it.. but the Editor is the last director and they may feel something goes together. But wasn't written that way. Or did the director have intent for it.

I thought the truck attack on the bridge seen was a dream sequence because the CGI came out of a Fast & Furious physics text book. Did they retrofit the truck with the engine from a Tesla Plaid?
