Showing a black person listening to heavy metal is what normal black people do. I grew up listening to different genres. we should stop putting ourselves in a stereotypical box
Tbh. The whole “black people only listen to rap and R&B and if you don’t you’re not black enough” rhetoric has always made me side eye. Seems extremely reductive and stereotypical.
Facts, it's like they think we're all the same person with the same tastes and interests, when that couldn't be farther from the truth
Look I listen to all kinds of music myself. We're not a monolith. Right now I'm really into the Soul Funk bands Fantastic Negrito and Black Pumas.
I’ll be impressed once they depict a black character listening to some harsh noise.
Thank you! I'm a 40 year old black woman and I love classic rock!
Julien getting cooked in these comments. Deservedly so, there's no justifying a cop hitting a biker when they can easily just pull up beside him and wave for him to stop
No, he said it wrong. He didn’t mean the cups were justified.

Julian is getting roasted so bad for all the right reasons 🤣
Julien’s reaction is real for the majority of Americans who don’t think cops intentionally harm civilians. They do.
You have a better chance getting struck by lightening than being intentionally harmed by cops. People like you need to stay off the internet because your "confirmation bias" is worsening your perspective of the world.
Yep
Remind me not to ride a bike or wear headphones around Julian.
Facts bruh!
I'm brown, which may or may not be relevant, but one time two cops detained me for riding my bike without shoes. Evidently that's "reasonable suspicion."
To me, it's just comfortable. The peddles are smooth.
lol. Julian there are million ways the cops could’ve pulled him over. Even with headphones lol
Being black, brown or any other minority you already suspect to police. Julien double down with saying, well if only if he complied?? Mf the whole movie.
Julien is out of line here. That’s the instigating point of the movie. If that was a White cyclist, that officer would definitely do whatever it takes NOT to ram his bike with his car. TF. My man completely missed the mark.
Corey’s face when he said that!
Julien is a goofy for saying the cops are in the right for knocking bro off his bike i knew there was something shady about him
Okay I thought I was the only one who felt there was something shady about dude.

tf is wrong with ur brain? where did he say that?
He didn’t say that.
@@thefirstbourne149 didn't say what?
By Julian's logic if you were walking with headphones in and a cop was trying to flag you down and you didn't hear them, they are just doing their jobs if they pull out their baton and bash the back of your knee instead of tapping your shoulder. WTF?
No that's not even close to what he said actually.
Yeah Julian let his racism slip out.
@@davidgeldner2167It's the same logic
Excatly
Remember, they never ran the sirens nor the lights because it would trigger the cameras in the car. They hit him because they profiled him. They made up the evading arrest just to have a reason to search him.

20:20 is when Julien really messed up and showed himself.
I seriously cannot believe Julien just said that. I had to stop the video for a minute because what he just said was so disappointing. That type of thinking is one of the reasons why mess like this continues to happen today. The cops did not have to knock him off. They could’ve seriously hurt him. They were not doing their jobs. They are just crooked people in uniform and the movie did a wonderful job in showing that.
If you believe this you are as partisan as Korey in believing this “real”😂
@@ItsJustCartierUmm Civil asset forfeiture is absolutely real and cops use it to straight up steal innocent peoples shit all the time. Just use google dude, you'll find dozens of articles detailing people who had the audacity to be driving around with lots of cash when cops pulled them over. “I gotta haunt these motherfuckers myself” is such an unbelievably cold line 🥶 One of the best films of 2024. Pierre is electric and Saulnier is quietly one of the best directors working
Saulnier has had a pretty damn good record so far, Green Room is also really good.
Pierre is as electric as Keenu Reeves…all action with no emotion yet 10/10 for the people that hate his acting😂

Hey Julien. Do I as a Deaf person deserve to get knocked off my bike by a cop? Do you understand what you actually advocated for? After all, I can’t hear the cop, so I guess he’d be within his rights to give me a concussion or worse due to that fact.
22:08 What a stupid take from Julien. Corey and Martin gave him the look: "Wanna repeat that?"
Julian's excuse for the cops knocking him off the bike is how you get situations like the cop who did a pit maneuver on a pregnant woman and flipped her car, even though there was not enough of a shoulder to pull over and she was following her legal duty to continue to a safe place before stopping.
You don't make excuses for garbage behaviour.
No justice, by the way. He got away with that nonsense with impunity.
@@LG4K4K My thoughts are that you don't get to needlessly put people in life threatening situations at all, and if you try to look at their record after they almost die in an attempt to justify your actions, then that would make you the worst kind of scum.
I remember that. It was horrible! That cop is a THUG!
I’m with Corey. Don Johnson was great, but Emory Cohen, man I despised him. Aside from how this film used dialogue to up the stakes, I also really loved the simplicity of the action. If this was Reacher or any other big tough guy against a ton of normal people, for some reason everyone knows martial arts. If a highly trained individual is coming up against a normal person or a group of them, they don’t have to pull out all the moves, but of course all these shows and films try to make it entertaining through fights alone so naturally they make it flashy so everyone can fight. But here they were really useless against him to the point he was relaxed and didn’t have to break a sweat as all the tension comes from dialogue. Just as much as I can love all these action scenes with great choreography, sometimes it’s nice to just get something very simple. I also completely agree that Aaron Pierre is a great leading man. He’s currently linked with the role of John Stewart in the Lanterns show. Seemingly between him and Damson Idris, but even if he doesn’t get it I think this film has put him in demand. Probably because it’s come out so close to Alien: Romulus, but I can really see him and Cailee Spaeny together just shooting up Xenomorph’s. He just suits that franchise for some reason and I think they’d work superbly well together.
We've been so blinded by unrealistic action films that realistic action bores us - people don't realize how quickly fights start and end. Martin pointed out the grappling, but he only grapples once...but as the stakes were upped, his tactics got more brutal to match it...non-lethal, but effective. Plus, I've never seen this but the emptying weapons of clips was a really neat tactic.
The action set up was great too...establishing early on his non-lethal approach and then that the police have all this non lethal equipment - foreshadowing the last act. Saulnier's writing was really good here.
The set up with the non-lethal weapons and his approach was so well done and clever.
The setup was laughable af….who tf rides a bike with over 30k in 2024 as if no one would rob them especially in a racist county😂
@@ItsJustCartier we get you wanna not like the movie...but u don't have to be dense. No one sees someone riding a bike and thinks "I bet they have 30K on them" let alone "let's rob them" . Talk about unrealistic 🤪

Soo...According to Julien it is A-ok to get knocked off your bike then ripped off by the cops. Got it. This is one of the most solid Netflix movies I have seen in a long while. The main character came across as strong, self-assured, and determined without all that alpha male overblown violence usually shown in action movies. Not to mention the main character wasn't bad to look at even after being knocked off his bike...Again, SMH Julien.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rambo didn't kill anyone in First Blood. He injured them. The one cop that died was because of his own ignorance.
Thank you for correcting that.
This happened to an marine vet who had his life savings in cash on him while traveling to his kids in CA. He was randomly pulled over by Nevada state police and they took his money. He was respectful and complied to everything they asked. This kind of crap is ridiculous! The legal loophole they are using forces you to prove innocence instead of them proving guilt.

Can anyone else NOT picture John Boyega in this role? This apparently was his movie until he had a fam emergency and had to quit mid-production. Aaron was perfect as Terry.
Every other movie John does these days is something vaguely racial related or fighting cops, which is fine but I miss his sci Fi era. We lost nothing by having him not involved because we can see him in Detroit, Naked Singularity, and others.
@@LARKXHIN i've seen some of those films, like the bank one, and he was great in that. I was thinking moreso on the lines of the physicality of the role. Aaron with that MCMAP stuff was dope. Can't really picture Boyega getting that diesel'd out for a role.
Absolutely 💯
Everything happens for a reason and Aaron Pierre was perfect for this role. I can’t even picture Boyega in the role. He lacks the physicality to be believable as a badass former marine with ninja skills.

I don't think Korey is understanding what Martin is saying.
Sure the MC wasn't killing cops, yet the fact he was assaulting cops is enough for him to be put away. Which is true.
Korey: it’s still real somehow even though the cops have every authority now to throw him under the bus
That's where the Rambo comparison stopped. Rambo was murking dudes while Terry had an effective but non-lethal approach.

@@MentalStillness well, that's the thing.
Rambo was also suffering from PTSD and had a mental break, which lead to him killing the cops that were hounding him.
I loved Anton Yelchin, one of my very favorite young actors. His bizarre death still blows my mind. I saw The Green Room shortly after he died and for me, its so bittersweet seeing him in such a great, entertaining movie after death
Agreed. I'm sure he would have gone on to give greater performances.
This movie didn't have as much action as I expected.....but I was still entertained and actually glued to my screen. It made me anxious watching this guy try to navigate through that hillbilly town. This film had me saying to myself "Damn, how is he going to get out of this?".

Jeremy Saulnier is such a great director, and this didn't disappoint, either. One of my favourites of the year.
To Julienne's critique of the main character screaming in rage at a couple of points, that's the point. As a veteran who's endured some things, we are known to be calm under pressure, subdued, but when the moment of catharsis reaches a boiling point whether for good or bad reasons, we can erupt. That was a very well observed and true take on the character.

Martin's point about the battle with all the cops coming after him is a great point. In that scene there's no reason for them to stay in that area behind cop cars, he could be easily outflanked by having cops just go around.
I put this on thinking it might be ok and was amazed by the end of it. So much better than it had any right to be. Well written and compelling from start to finish.

Looking forward to see how this movie addresses it.
I thought about that season of The Shield also. Very good. I think Anthony Anderson played the main antagonist that season.

The main character Terry Richmond was listening to Right Brigade by Bad Brains, a black punk/reggae band. And he has the bands album art lighting bolt tattooed on his left forearm. Check the movie soundtrack. Legit!!!😎
There's been a lot of people online saying Aaron Pierre should be the new Blade...ironically he was supposed to be playing a villain in the new Blade movie, possibly Deacon Frost.
While the movie is enjoyable, I felt the beginning suffered from lazy writing to the point where I questioned if Terry either had no sense of urgency, didn't love his cousin like he said he did, just lived under a rock his whole life, or if he had a plan of waging war with the cops from the start? Its like the writers couldn't find a better reason to put him into conflict with the corrupt cops. If the owner of the restaurant is willing to wire Terry money after his money was stolen than why not ask the owner to loan money to get a rental after he sold his car? If Terry was willing to give his bike to Summer to sell for around a thousand dollars than why not Terry sell his bike and put the money towards a rental
I think that sometimes Martin just needs to bump Korey so that he doesn’t repeat himself like a broken record…

Yea what is he talking about. He is a close quarter combant expert. So he made it to the point. Where he had the advantage. They didn't call more help in because. They was corrupted. They didn't want anybody else to know. So they kept it within the town.
Aaron also played Malcolm X in Genius. I thought he was better in that. I think he's a fine actor, with nice range and vulnerability, but I also found some of his line readings a bit flat. He was consistent though, maybe a little subtle for an actioner.
Julien is one of the worst additions to DT since it started.

Welp Julien is who I thought he was👍🏾. Just happy it was kept in the review instead of edited out. It’s not shocking that he’s that openly ignorant. It's a grounded movie did you really think Terry was going to be a cop killer? Fuck the Police but if he did that shit would've got worse. State Police would've came in.
One of my favorite parts of this movie was really how grounded it was: like the characters are so aware of their environment and also make very human mistakes. Like terry at the beginning when talking to summer, a car in the distance revs their engine, and he is easily alerted to it speaking of how instinctive he is. Blink and you will miss it. Then there is the part with the fire where he trips and falls on the fire 😂😂 like he is still human but still badass
"Learning maths with John Rambo" sounds like a great show!
The tension and the build up was everything to me! I loved it alot! I just love good realistic dialogue and reasoning in movies ❤❤
The Institute for Justice does a lot of work with helping people that get targeted by Civil Asset Forfeiture. It's scary to think that Civil Asset Forfeiture is unfortunately legal all over the US and a lot of innocent people get robbed by the police for no good reason, but at least there are some good people trying to do something about it (and winning quite a few cases, too).
I haven't seen this movie yet but listening to your description in the first five minutes I was thinking Rambo. Naturally I was pleased when you said the same thing a few minutes later.
The single take sequence when Richmond parks the dully under the bridge and climbs out on top and up to the road was chef's kiss. This had no business being so good. Saulnier delivers again.
