Fun fact; The Thames stopped freezing over because they built the embankment for the tube and sewer which condensed the Thames and sped up the water flow which stopped the freezing over.
this is not true
It still freezes over upstream above Teddington when it get below 8 degrees for a few weeks
I worked on the Thames in the 1970s and 80s and it froze over a few times at Hampton

this was like my childhood, waking up in winter temperatures in the early minuses, with a thick layer of ice in the inside of my bedroom windows, and then helping my dad make the coal fire
Wow, where did u grow up? Also, how old are you? So much has changed is a short amount of time. I used to be amazed at what Jack Frost used to do to our windows as a child . You never see windows ice over anymore and I’m only 55.
-12f here in Minnesota today with 30mph winds. 🥶 Still went out and filled all the bird and Squirrel feeders. 😊

First rule of winter boat life is never let the fire go out!
I'd be up every 4 hours putting some fuel on. They would only need to get up once each lol. Great life though.
For a Good Fire,
Mix Coal & Logs.
A Little of each Alternately.
The coal will Give the Heat & the Logs will Give the Flame.
2 much of Either will make the boat Too Hot then too cold.
Feed a Fire Slowly & Often. for Constant Heat.

Back in the 70's I remember waking up to glass of water frozen, and the toilet bowl frozen. There were times in the 60's when the water pipes froze and split. We were on a lake in Central Ontario, Canada. Some nights we were woke up by the Ice on the lake splitting with a ZINNNNNG!! and heaving up.
I've often wondered how our ancestors survived in caves with rudimentary heat and fur blankets. Glad you were prepared, and not taken by surprise. I've subbed to keep track of you :D Happy New Year, 2023...

When I was a lad in the early sixties, we lived in a big Victorian house with no central heating or double glazing. In the winter, I would wake up with the inside of my bedroom window covered in lovely frost patterns. I would sit there in my pyjamas and draw patterns in the frost and don't remember being cold.

Just up the river from you near Abingdon. Had couple of early 5:30-6:00am starts on site during the recent cold snap. A couple of mornings were -10C. Not quite Russian like, but that's pretty cold for our part of the world. Did see -18C a few years ago. Made the skin burn that! Stay warm! Merry Christmas to you both!

In my cabin , I have a wood fired slow combustion firebox... I modified it, Theres 4 runs of 1 inch pipe that keeps the 300 lt hot water system nice and hot... And theres a 10 cm pipe that runs all the way through with a 90 degree bend at the end.. On the inlet end theres a little 12 volt hi flow fan from a computer.. That blows toasty warm air all night long.. As long as I put a small log in before i go to bed and another around 4am..
That was my bedroom windows every morning when I was young ☺
My mom has some Christmas tree deco's that are easily 50 years old or more. But after my dad passed away she stop putting up Christmas stuff. We still exchange gift's and have a good meal but that far as it goes.
The trees beutifull so is the snow cold is ok and your artistic skills are cool as think anyone would love a hand made card like that hope youz had a lovely christmas and hope new years tops

In the late forties and early fifties when I was a Child, having Ice on the inside of our Window Frames was nothing unusual. Before we went to bed my Mother would iron the Sheets with an Iron full of hot Coal from the Fire. If we were cold my Father would put and extra old Coat on the bed. My two Sisters slept at the top of the bed and I was at the bottom with my legs facing up. I learnt to swim when I was two.😂😂 I am 79 now so it did me no harm. Our bodies are meant to work hard, not be mollycoddled.
I wish my wife will want live on the boat:D it's nice freedom
Been there, done that, except all I had were two small room heaters to keep a 50 foot houseboat "warm" during a week of -15 degree F weather. Three layers of clothing, two pairs of socks, furry slippers, gloves - I survived, but it was all day. I didn't have a furnace or a wood stove!

Looks like a canal barge in England. Where in England is this? Tbh 2 degrees Celsius ain't bad, in day nice fleece as long as it's dry will do and at night go to sleep (whiskey or 2 get you warm).

Very different to my experience of Henley in 2022 on a glorious summers day.
I would love the frost fairs to come back along with deep snow in winter making Christmas proper also seeing the shops close at 12 noon 24 December and be closed fir at least 2 days. We really do not need all this silliness. I do wonder how in 1970 and 1980 we managed to get ready for Christmas with no Sunday trading and very few late night shops.
We do need to take a step back and reset society

Ah I remember that well, ice on the inside of my boat, waking up in the morning with what felt like frost on my bedroom floor⚠️
Harsh winters and boats don't go well together, I survived a couple of bad winters and went back to a house with proper central heating!
I did find a solution though, where I moored up I found a mains electrical point that was left on!
Being the ever resourceful type, a lead was plugged in at bedtime and a small fan heater left on minimum, gently blowing lovely warm air under my bed all night.....
Wow I woke up so.snug and warm, no more frost inside my bedroom, only thing is my mouth was so dry my tongue was stuck to the roof of my mouth!! 😲😳⚠️😁
