My tortoise has been a family heirloom for 80 years + we don’t know his real age bc my great great grandfather found him while cycling which is quite weird bc we live in England so he kept it.
hol up, great great GRANDfather?!?!.? that tortoise is prolly 100+ yo already,
That is freaking awesome!
The tortoise is being passed down generation to generation isnt it?
Really lucky fella he is
If you dont mind, may i know how big your tortoise is?
I want to know how big your tortoise now
I'm in quarantine and I suddenly want a pet tortoise really bad
Same!! A life long companion
Do lots of research, don't listen to what this person said in their vid. Look on tortoise forums about the specific type you want.
By looking on a tortoise forum, you an see the opinions of other tortoise owners on someone's recommendations.
How did you KNOW Lmaoo same
Think about it, is a huge commitment
I have two Hermann’s and they live in the garden as there about 9 years old now! It’s great because they come up to you and eat from hand but you need to clean their shell with coconut oil once a week
my mum, sister and I want one but my dad says no :((
we’re trying to convince him tho lolll
edit: we got one lolll
isabelle brown get one anyway xD
Vybzx he caved 😂 we’re getting one next week!!

@@isabe11e6 they will become best friends. Tortoise is basically a dog
What type of tortoise did you get?
My Greek tortoise only costed about $100 because they were on sale🤷♀️, this is really good information for any new tortoise owners. Thanks for informing your viewers.

Wow that’s an amazing price!I got mine from a cheep breader, mine was 113 for a baby Redfoot :3
Big note here: they live a verrrrryyyyy long time some can be 100+ years old.
K b My baby is gonna be in my Will then
Not all of them

Imagine if you die before your childhood pet dies lol
Turtles live for 80 years and tortoises live for 50 years
P.S. That is if your good at keeps things alive
They have the cutest little faces! I saved a tortoise from walking on the road, and brought him back to the nature park, and fell in love them since then.
I have 4 Greek and 1 Turkish and Iove them so much they live in my backyard and have plenty of space. I don’t like when pets are hold in little enclosures...
Edeline Aurora wow
Hope the birds don’t get them
i have 2 russians and they have the greenhouse which is seperated in2 and also an outdoor area i hate seeing them in tiny cages
The Magic Twister they can still be killed, my neighbour hood is filled with hawks and owls you can see them sitting on fences and chasing squirrels, turtles would be easy pickings
U cant have a pet tarantula set free :v
Found my tortoise in my back yard, we started feeding him and giving him water, and Hummpfre has been a part of our family ever since
I have a Hermanns Tortoise and he is honestly my whole life. I love him so much and honestly, idk where I'd be without him. I'm looking forward to spending the w
rest of my life with my little companion
Hi! I know this is an old comment but I’m looking into getting a Hermann’s tortoise, what surprised you the most about them that not a lot of people told you?
@@blueberrypawsome how much he eats-
he seriously eats a lot so I'd definitely recommend investing in growing your own plants if possible.
also how much he makes me happy :)) some people say they're "useless pets" which I think is horrible and completely wrong cause that little guy can put a smile on my face in seconds!
@@leegornik8656 alright, thank you!
From personal experience, as long as it doesn't snow where you live and you have an enclosed space (at least a square meter, preferably larger) with dirt and partial sunlight ( a garden or a flower bed or anything similar) , you could keep a healthy greek tortoise basically for free: they eat any sort of weeds and grasses that grow and you can sometimes give them some vegetables or vegetable and fruit scraps, I have two healthy greek tortoises and i rarely ever feed them, they just eat grasses and weeds that grow in the garden on their own
do they grow large? i want to get a smaller breed since i can accommodate a smaller tortoise better, this comment has me leaning on getting a greek tortoise so now i’m curious as to how large they grow? and how large is the enclosure?
@@faithdada8437 They don't grow very large compared to other species, most adults are around 5 to 8 inches in length, in some cases they can grow up to 11 inches, I currently have an adult female that's 10 inches but this is very rare and it's by no means the standard, females typically grow larger than males so I would suggest getting a male if you're after a smaller tortoise, also if the tortoise's age isn't a concern to you, I would suggest buying an adult that you know isn't gonna grow any larger, but that's not really a big issue as I said they rarely get over 8 inches especially males, as for the enclosure, most people say it should be 2 feet by 3-4 feet or larger, but i would argue you can get away with a 2 feet by 2 feet enclosure if you don't have a particularly big tortoise as long as you clean the enclosure regularly. I hope u find this helpful, if you have any more questions I'm always happy to help.
@@youssefadouni8983 can you tell me what type of vegetables they eat ??
@@zinebsamad0553 Pretty much any fresh vegetables, you can give them fresh parsley, collard greens, lettuce, dandelion greens, shredded or thinly sliced cucumber and carrot. You can also give them some fruit occasionally but it shouldn't make up a big part of their diet, it should only be a small snack as too much fruit would be bad for them.
@@youssefadouni8983 Alright thanks .BTW I bought a baby turtle but it doesn't want to eat at all and I wonder how many days can a baby turtle resist for not eating anything and it's been so many hours that it's sleeping lol (didn't die at least) if you have any idea please answer me back
I have a sulcata tortoise. Had her since she was 3 months old. She will be turning 30 yrs old on 10/2020. She's a tank, tipping the scales at 120lbs. I hate to point out, they need to be outside to grow and be healthy. Im here in arizona. They need the sun. They burro deep. Grass to graze on. They are dinosaurs. It's a very big commitment to own one of these tortoises. You must have a backyard big enough for them to roam around. Even in the summertime when it reaches 110 + degrees they need that burrow and they can survive on fruits and vegetables. Best if you try to grow your own garden here in Arizona my tortoise ''Tremer'' loves grape vine leaves. You should check her out on RUclips. All you got to do is type in her name as above the tortoise. So yeah check out '' Tremer''. And share her vids.
Thanks🙂
Is her pee easy to clean?
1:29 I personally think that's the cutest tortoise also because I have one, it is also one of the most popular tortoises around.
Same
I have to disagree about the substrate cost... A bag of sterilized topsoil from Home Depot is like $3 a bag.
I use bark
I just got sum topsoil and I really recommend it!It holds up the humidity really well, and it lets my tortoise burrow way easier
I am going to get a Russian tortoise and this was really helpful 👍 thanks
i live in Canada. My Sulcata Tortoise just turned 10. As long as ur willing to take them on daily walks during the spring and summer, they pretty much feed theirselves (+ produce $25/mo)
When they free range it’s a lot cheaper indeed! The only expense is food and medical bills 😆
I have a greek, spur thigh (Male) tortoise (he's name is Bert), he's 4 years old. I reccomend getting one! They are easy to look after and are great pets. I got him for only £75 pounds which is pretty much a bargain compared to other prices.
150 f now this days my turtois brothet
Thanks this has been a real help convincing my dad to get a tortoise for my birthday
I have one local Indonesian turtle. White cheek turtle. Her name is Cleo. She has been 16 yrs stay with us since our marriage. We love her so much as I love my kids. So happy to have pet like her
Massimo Captain That’s awesome!
This is very helpful thank you so much! 😊
No more expensive than a dog or cat hell really no animal is cheap
Ants are
Fish are
Emm fish where I like are 20 pence each :/
@@idiot7456 Mate where are you keeping these fish? The set up is expensive !
Technically, the animal itself can be reasonably priced (depending on the animal) but in terms of the set-up, food, etc. they can be expensive. My gerbils were around £15 themselves but for a good gerbilarium, food, bedding, toys, etc. the price begins to add up. My fish (a common clown) probably was more expensive than them in terms of the set-up, though! 😂 To be fair, I've had her for 3-4 years though and my gerbils for only one and a half or so.
Thanks for the help now if definitely going to get one myself!
Thank You! Thinking about getting one so thanks for the information!
This video was helpful but thankfully in my area it’s very cheap!
Such great info! I really wish I had a torise!!
Thank you sooooooooo much this helped me a lot
I just watched a lady have a tortoise since she was 10 and now I want a pet that will never leave my side

Thank you for the information. I'm new to your channel. 👍👍
I have a tortoise, and this can help me!
I want a pet tortoise, I think it matches my introverted personality. I wonder where I can get one in the Philippines.
You should get a tortoise,in the Philippines, the humidity is high right? If so,I think theirs tropical tortoises where you live
Funny story, i was coming home from church and as I approach my street to home, I see a tortoise crossing the street. And im like hell no, so i park my car and pick it up and take it home. Welcome home Master Oogway 🙏🏻
Aaaah,do your research!
That's the best name ever
OMG SAME I found mines crossing the street and took him home 😂 his name Mr.Franklin
Ive honestly wanted a tortoise for my farm because I constantly grow food and most of the food dont get used and i often dont have much buyers. At least I'll have a little big guy to munch on them. And as a bonus they'll give me fertilizer
Fertilizer is very toxic and deadly to tortoises,so I recommend harvesting all your crops then growing them without fertilizer
@@moodles_yt8374 Actually I think he means that that tortoises droppings would become fertilizers for his crops
I’m looking into getting a Russian tortoise I am a big animal lover and I want to welcome someone new to our animal family and this has really helped thank you so much

Gonna adopt a tortoise from animals shelter gonna get them a special area in my garden

I got a baby red foot I use Eco-earth loose coconut fibre substrate for the enclosure it’s pretty good Charlie like digging around and stuff in it lol and also feed my tortoise with maintenance formula with fruit Tortoise food and there just every day food pellets but have to make them a bit soft but has everything a tort needs in it and also have tortoise treats that he just Deavours and cuttle bone just if he wants to Bit on it it’s good for calcium a lol and natural Forest tortoise food with added vitamins and materials but Charlie don’t like that much so I sneak it in with lettuce cucumbers once in a while for him and I only had the little one for about 2 two months so far and also let him on concrete to file his nails and eat some green leaves to. And I am starting to grow plants in his enclosure to
Please don’t keep certain types of tortoises in tanks, tables etc etc. The best thing for a tortoise is fresh air and at lest 8ft long outdoor pen. Only bring your tortoise inside if it is too cold or there are predators near.
Just a note.
🐢🐢🐢
Also there is a MASSIVE DIFFERENCE between tortoises, turtles and terrapins. Please do research and don’t get from Pets at Home, Petsmart, Petco and big chain stores as they are just in it for the money. Also make sure that you’re not getting imports.
Thnx
Xx
To late I'm already getting one! LOL
thanks this helped alt!
alot
Glad it helped! 😊
I have 3 and 4 year old tortoises called Bobby and Turbo and they are hermann's tortoise.

Anyone know if there are any special considerations to be made if I'm planning to have a tortoise in Texas?
Long triple degree summers, bipolar weather conditions, and anywhere from no winter to freezing over
True Story: My Nan owns a tortoise with a backstory. My great-grandparents once had a neighbour who worked at a train station and one time he was searching the tracks and found a tortoise covered in sand (this must have been around 65 years ago). When he got the tortoise, he brought it home with him and showed his wife. They owned the tortoise for around 5 years. One time when my mom was at her grandparents house (my great-grandparents), the tortoise owner asked her and her grandparents if they “want” the tortoise. My mom and great-grandparents thought he meant that they could hold the tortoise, but instead meant do you want to HAVE the tortoise, like literally own. So one day, my great-grandparents ended up with a random tortoise. They asked the neighbour about the back story and he told them about it being covered in sand, hence why they called the tortoise “Sandy”. Soon when my great-grandparents got too old to own it and my great-grandad died, they decided to give it to my grandparents. Remember, this all happened around 40 years ago (when I still wasn’t born). My grandad is sadly now dead but my Nan is still alive, taking care of Sandy. I do see the tortoise a bit when I go round my Nans house but of course it is now in hibernation. Sandy must be in her 70’s now so she probably has a lot more life to live.
Sweet story
So make sure to have those spare lights when the other one breaks. :)
You forgot to mention food dish, water dish, and a hide (was that included in the enclosure cost?). Additionally a tortoise bone for filing down their beak and calcium supplement.
I love turtles and tortoises
I liked the red foot just trying to find 1
Redfoots shouldnt be more than 125, same for yellow foots. Unless they have crazy coloration.
I’m getting three turtles from my friend so I’m buying a lot of stuff and a fridge just for them with all there food and there baby’s by the way but I’m sooo exited!
Lavender Power that’s adorable! I hope everything goes well with them :D
Is there a certain species that doesn't need any heat source? Because my brother found a turtoise on the street once (probably someone who abandoned it because they don't naturally live in my country) and we kept it for a little while and we didn't have any heating. Then we gave it to grandparents who had turtoises already and they keep them in their yard. But my country has a rather cold climate and I don't think they have any heating for the animals. But they are still active and haven't died yet, so is it a certain species or?
reptile rescues are full of tortasis you can pick one up for like 25 quid

Hey so my dad has had a turtle since the 70s but it just passed away but my parents recently divorced and I’m thinking about getting one but I’m not gonna get one until like 2 months because I gotta do research
Get the app Tortoise Table and it shows all the weeds and flowers they can eat! People usually leave wood out in yards so you can get some to make play pens and homes! You can rescue a tortoise for £20 sometimes and for a water dish they are only £3-£8 small bowl in Walmart/ Asda! Edit: if the tortoise is living inside in a warm temp then they will be fine just keep an eye on them and make sure they progressing and stuff! My mate has had a tortoise for around 3 years and my dad is thinking about letting me get one as you can get them cheaper then these videos
Thanks for the tip!
I want one and I’m calling him Dave
But if you want to have it outside however you have to buy substrate
