Who says that remakes are never good? This is probably the greatest remake in movie history. For more Goldblum goodness, check him out in another great remake, _The Invasion of the Body Snatchers,_ (1978).
Don't 4get "Cape Fear"! Not a horror & no Goldblum, of course, but impressive & a MUST SEE as well!!! ✌ ❤ 🚬
I had no idea this was a remake!
Invasion of the body snatchers is on the list however I didn't know Goldblum was in it. Might have to bump it up a bit!
@@RyanCarrington Donald Sutherland is the star but Goldblum has a great part in it. The original 1950s version is excellent as well.
@@RyanCarrington the original Fly has a different tone and outcome, not entirely due to its age. It's worth a watch imo even though it's not going to hit you as hard emotionally.
@@arisucheddar3097 Should watch the original just for the ending.
They rarely make such developed characters in big movies these days.
Too much work
This goes beyond your traditional "gross out" movie and becomes horrifically tragic. An incredible movie that never loses its power. But then, this is David Cronenberg we're talking about, and if you haven't, you should check out more of his movies.
The Fly II (1989) by the way is well worth checking out, it's not quite as great as this one, but it is underrated, give it a go, and do a reaction vid to it (because no one else has yet as far as I know, you'd be ahead of the curve on that!)
the fly 2 is more a B movie that kinda goes in a different path of the fly. Its a straight tv feeling. while the effects are still good, sadly theres no character developtment. The dog scene is hard to watch.... I grow up with B horror movies, so i do think the fly 2 is a decent movie by its own.
@@cassandramcbride7007 Hi Cassandra, that's a fair assessment of it, but as you say, worth a watch if you love this one.
There is also Braindead from Peter Jackson - more disgusting than this film, but at the same time one of the funniest movies.
@philrob1978 The Fly II had some good scenes early in the film, but other than that it was junk compared to this 1986 film. The dog scene in The Fly II was so upsetting, the Fox network cut it out when they aired it around 1990 or 91. Instead of writing an original sequel script, they took scripts from sequels to the 1958 original ("Return of the Fly" 1959 and "Curse of the Fly" 1966)...combined those to make this sequel. I believe it bombed when word got out it wasn't good, but it was much anticipated from their teaser trailer.
That was a grat reaction!
-" Is it your child?"
-"No... it belongs to a fly"
😂😂
😂
The original 1958 "The Fly" had a sequel one year later, "Return of the Fly." While the original was filmed in color, the two sequels are B&W. The 3rd installment "Curse of the Fly" was in 1965. I recommend the 1958 Fly as it's one of several memorable scifi films of the '50s and stars Vincent Price.
@Grouchy Marx I love the original as well, I saw it about 6 months before this 1986 remake. It's not as gruesome. It was also recorded in stereo in 1958, which was a new thing! The sequel was a cheap B&W film, made cheaper only so 20th Century Fox would have a bigger profit (even though the 1958 Fly movie was a big hit). The Fly (1986) is in surround sound, it sounds great too. Also if you have a good sound system, the teleportation in the 1958 movie (they were called "Disintegrator Integrators") has a COOL sound when it's running, almost like a spaceship taking off!
@@CoopyKat I know. Have a good sound system and it does! Love and grew up on those '50s scifi classics during the '60s on up. 🖖👽
@@GrouchyMarx Very cool! There are lots of classic old movies. I'm sure you've seen Forbidden Planet, another favorite of mine.
We generally do say vacation. I never noticed her saying holiday before.
I only spotted it because it's unusual to hear from an American as a Brit 🙂
I never heard her saying holiday either. We usually do say vacation here in America. I find it odd that UK/Aussie folk don't say vacation. I love language because of this. It's so interesting that the same language has different words to mean the same thing.
@@RyanCarrington You should watch the sequel with Eric Stotz
i almost consider this a canadian film , and canada seems more in tune with its British heritage
I think I felt sad because Seth wasn't a bad person, he was just a victim of a very unfortunate circumstance. He knew it was irreversible, and he just wanted his humanity back. As Ronnie said, "he's so scared, and desperate ..." I felt for him. A true tragic character.
😩😩😩
I really wasn't expecting this movie to get as sad as it did.
I love the development of all three main characters in this, especially the near-reversal of the roles of Seth and Stathis; The latter goes from being an arrogant jerkass to being spurred to do the right thing in the end, and Brundle slowly losing his humanity, going from a good-natured man to desperate abomination.
I always wish Seth had maybe started his teleportation experiments with a plant or something, before trying the baboon. 🙁 On another note, you were right when you thought that Americans usually say “vacation” and not “holiday.” That is true! 👍
@MontaqZoso This entire movie was filmed in Toronto, Canada. That might be why they used "holiday", that could be a Canada term as well.
You might want to give Requiem For A Dream (2000) a watch. Wonderful editing and cinematography, deeply disturbing themes, and a top notch cast. Have something fun and light to watch after to cleanse the palate afterwards, as this one leaves an empty void within you by the end.
Watch it as the first film of a double-bill, and make sure the second film is "It's a Wonderful Life".
Caught it yesterday, but came back to leave a comment, keep it up
Thank you ☺️
Gotta react to the greatest film shot in New Zealand. No, not The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Kiwi masterpiece 'Dead Alive' (aka Braindead) 1992. It's an absolute amazing Halloween or weekend horror cult party film.
Amen!!!
This movie is a metaphor for watching a loved-one gradually die of a terminal illness. Seeing them fall apart before your eyes and feeling their fear. But there’s nothing that you, or they can do, except await the inevitable. 😔
Now i'm sad! :(
@findlestick Many people at the time this came out in 1986 could relate to the fact that it does mirror real-life diseases and illnesses. The ending is very sad, but it's still a great film.
LOLLL I love watching people's reaction to this movie, one of my favorites. It IS a very draining movie half way in.....but it's still really good.
It's brilliant!
The Fly 2 is a must see. Nobody has done a reaction for it for some crazy reason
Maggot scene when I was a child: OMG this is disgusting and I'm traumatized forever.
Maggot scene as an adult now: Giggity!
I love this movie and the score just makes it even better. This movie came out when I was a kid and even then I always found it so sad. And the end when he comes out of the machine, I have the same feeling no matter how many times I've watched it, "how sad that he just wanted to event something great and this is where his life ended up". He never could have predicted that the cost of being a great inventor would be this ☹.
I wasn't expecting such depth when I went into the movie. Heartbreaking!
The original Fly with the great Vincent Price, scared the hell outta me when I was little, he had the body the size of a fly but a human head
Vincent Price did the speaking part in Michael Jackson's Thriller
There is a Fly 2 you should see
By the way Jeff and Geena were married
My favorite Geena Davis movie is
A League of their own, with Tom Hanks and Madonna
Vincent Price didn't play
the mutated scientist in the original.
That was Al (David) Hedison.
Price played his brother.
@@laustcawz2089 Captain Crane from Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea🙂
The 1970s and 1980s will always be the Golden Age of Hollywood. Always.
FYI, the director (the great David Cronenberg) played the doctor at the abortion dream. His more notable movies usually have some sort of body horror element to them. He played the bad guy in Clive Barkers Nightbreed, he had a killer mask in it IMO. Glad you got this back up, great movie and reaction Ryan! Peace!
Nightbreed is one of my favorite horror films and very underrated in my opinion
@@joshuayeager3686 Yeah, I don't think it gets the love it deserves either!
Oh cool!
Thanks for watching, man! 🤙
David Cronenberg's The Fly is how you make a great horror movie and great reaction man! The reason why the horror is so effective is because of the likeable characters and brilliant performances from Jeff Goldblum, Geena Daviz and John Getz and I love the fact that you mentioned them showing the prototype telepod at the beginning and how that telepod comes into play with Brundle's twisted plan to cure himself in the climax, great movie!
Welcome to The Fly fanclub!
Hands down one of the best sci-fi horror films of all time.
Actually, a couple of your predictions did happen in the original version of The Fly which is also worth watching.
The doctor in the dream sequence is director Davey Cronenberg.
The telepods are enlarged versions of Ducati motorbike engine cylinders.
About "holiday" vs. "vacation," it depends on whether there's an article in front of it. "Take a vacation" and "take a holiday" both work, but we only say "on vacation," never "on holiday."
Gotcha!
Vacation is solely an American word to us. Occasionally used by non-english speaking people as well.
This movie is and always shall be birth control.
😂😂😂
Definitely not a date movie 😅
The original THE FLY (1958) is excellent too.
my fav part is the arm wrestling scene...i love his quick head movements, veryy insect-like..and only a good actor like goldblum could pull that off without looking ridiculous
@13:05 “pump the breaks there” lmao 🤣 yes haha
Here for the second watch! 😉
😂
Thanks for watching!
@@RyanCarrington 🙋🏼♀️🤣
A real tribute to Jeff’s Charm. His intro to his breakdown. Even you said, about that one scene… That’s the most Jeff thing I’ve ever seen. 😂
The film, as a science fiction, is crazy… is it the fly who says, I am now superior? Is the Fly in his mind, a metaphor… having gone through, the computer didn’t get mind as well as it did flesh. No fly, but a change of mind.
22:05, this was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
I looked it up and it said Cronenberg (who'se Canadian) did extensive rewrites to the script and the story is set in Toronto, so maybe Canadians say things like holiday? I dunno.
Ahhhh!
10:04, no that's the original The Fly made in 1958. Now this The Fly is how you do a remake. Totally original from the original but you should check out the original Fly series. The 1st 2 are with the great horror icon Vincent Price!!
Beginning: All the good feels.
Ending: All the bad feels.
💯💯💯
The word 'holiday' was probably used because the director, Cronenberg, is Canadian.
Best Sci-fi Psychological Body Horror film ever made! It won the Oscar for Best Makeup, and made $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget. David Cronenberg said in an interview that the film is an allegory for AIDS, stating, "if you or your lover have AIDS, then you should watch this movie, as it's a cautionary tale on how deadly and incurable this disease can be, and how it can affect your family, friends, and loved ones."
So seriously one of the most horrifying movies ever. I agree with you...I had nightmares over the whole melting hand and foot scene for days after the first time I saw this. You should watch the original. It's a very different take on the story but also in it's own way an amazing classic of a SciFi thriller. I would also watch the sequel to this movie. Not a good but it does continue the story directly and gives some closure to the whole thing.
YASSSSSSSSSS SO EXCITED!
u ever get my email?
The best sad/wholesome ever is called What Dreams May Come you should watch it if you haven't
The way I look at this version of The Fly. Consider Gena Davis' character the filmic equivalent to Esmeralda, and Brundle Fly the Hunchback, and Cronenberg the modern cinematic horror equivalent to Victor Hugo.
I haven't seen the hunchback of Notre dame but I know the gist and I got those vibes when he was on the roof looking down.
Meant to tell you, I really like your thumbnails!
Thanks so much! Makes me feel better for spending a bit longer than I should on them 😅
The long kiss goodnight, with Geena Davis
Please
9:36 Indeed, but it also brings up a (very) slight issue I have with the film in this regard.
The premise is that the computer _doesn't know what to do_ when encountering the two separate entities. However we all know the air is full of separate entities, not only small organisms but the gas molecules themselves. So perhaps the computer can be 'set' to only recognise entities of a certain size, but then why would it have been set to recognise something a small as a fly in the first place. None of this makes very much sense, but I know, it's only a film!
If I am remembering correctly, the sequel is about the baby she has.
jeff goldblum was nearly crying watching a clip in an interview....it was the part when he says I AM AN INSECT THAT DREAMT HE WAS A MAN AND LOVED IT, AND NOW THE DREAM IS OVER AND THE INSECT IS AWAKE...i love the film however its very depressing..the fly 2 i wouldn't recommend, had some seriously fcked up shit in that, despite eric stoltz being awesome as usual
If I can suggest some real tests of your endurance, I'd suggest the first two TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRES ( both directed by Tobe Hooper, and both uncut if at all possible ), Carpenter's THE THING ( 1982), RE-ANIMATOR and BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR with Jeffrey Combs, and for Halloween night, well, there are so many obvious choices, so I'll steer you toward TRICK R' TREAT, a 2007 anthology horror directed by Michael Dougherty. It's just redolent with Hallowe'en spirit, and isn't one that everyone knows about. DOKTOR G'HUL RECOMMENDS!
I agree a great movie for it's time!!
Awesome. This movie is great at getting to you to sympathize with the hero turned villian. Its a dark film thats for sure. Yeah Americans say Holiday but we say, "going on A holiday" instead of, "going on holiday". We like to say as many words as much as possible in each sentence that we speak or write any chance we get that makes no difference if we had not mentioned them at all instead of speaking something shorter in length that gets to the point much faster.
"It's not often you see arm wrestling movies isn't it?"
Yeah... ya see, there was this movie once..... "OVER THE TOP".
I actually found the fly screaming help me in the spiders web at the end of the original movie to be a very disturbing scene that i kind of wish had been adapted into this one but i understand why they chose not to.
that scene horrified audiences... the original...they parodied it in beetlejuice
One of the few modern movies that really qualifies as a tragedy. Filmmakers are reluctant these days to make a film that resolves in a way that's just awful.
There are few things more horrifying than the thought of a 185 lb. insect with lungs, and an exoskeleton that could carry the weight. No empathy or compassion. Just strength and savagery. I guess it could have been worse if it had been a wasp, mantis, or even a spider in the pod with him.
I saw this at the theater with a girlfriend in 1986. I was 21 she 19 and this grossed to her out to where she didn't want to meet some friends and party after like we planned. Gotta admit there was some gross parts but I'd already seen all the 70's to mid 80's horror films by then including Exorcist when I was 8, so I was pretty desensitized. I saw the original 'The Fly' with Vincent Price when I was 5 though and I had nightmares on that 'Heeelllp Meee!' scene.
This was testing my anxiety disorder by the end 😂
Any recommendations for similar stress inducing movies?
Have you seen Silence of the Lambs yet?
Silence of the Lambs! Epic movie, won zillion of Oscars, psychologically tense and just amazing. 👍😎 Howard Shore from The Fly also did the music on Silence of the Lambs, as an FYI.
Prisoners is a rather underrated, stressful thriller, and quite recent (2013).
I’ve never been one for hiking but The Ritual (2017) ensured that I’ll never do it in the Scandinavian wilderness.
Don't c "The Exorcist" on ur list? If haven't seen, IS A MUST!!! & 1 OF MOST POPULAR REACTIONS U CAN DO, along w/ 1 of GOAT's "Forrest Gump"! 100''s of views over night!!! FREAK ON, BRO!!! ✌ ❤ 🚬
Music by lord of rings/hobbit composer Howard shore.
Movie Suggestion! Split Second from 92. Great scifi-horror cheese with Rutger Hauer as a hard nose smartass cop
It's been many years since I saw The Fly 2, but if memory serves me correct it was pretty good, and equally bleak.
fun fact the baboon part was originally WAY WORSE... like 50 times worse, so they re-shot it...i regret watching the original one.
You should also do the second one! Although it's got a different vibe and admittedly is not as good as the first one, it's still worth a watch (and a reaction vid).
Is 'The Thing' from 1982 on your list? Also a remake of a 50's film.
Sure is!
Always makes me hungry
😑😂
Yee yee!
🤙🤙🤙
The sequel...Eric Stolz plays the son. It's not as good, but it's worth a watch.
Seth definitely didn't know what he had, even without being to transport living things he would have changed the world. Trade, manufacturing, space exploration the applications are only limited by the whole no organics bug which would probably be worked out pretty quick.
Exactly!
There is a sequel, it was disappointing but sad again
Man, there are so many films that I'd love to see reaction videos to. At least you're far more intelligent than some of the bimbos doing first reaction shows. I'd want to see you react to some of the classic horrors, sci fis, man , so many choices.

For what it's worth, I don't watch sad movies either. Though I still enjoyed this one for the sci-fi aspect and it's an interesting story. But I watch movies for the escapism aspect, and I don't need them to be downers. Avoid "Requiem For a Dream" at all costs!
As much as I like this movie, I don't usually watch reactions for this one, it's so gross! And even then, I LISTENED to your reaction once the gross parts started (I know the movie like the back of my hand, so it was no problem following along!) It's the only movie I won't eat during. I can eat during "Alien", "The Exorcist", but I cannot take in food during this one! But I do love Goldblum and Davis in this (they got married in real life soon after this). It's funny, watching this now, it looks sort of low budget, even though the effects are so good. But most of the movie seems to take place in his place, her place, or the ex- boyfriend's office! All the money must have gone into the effects and the actor's salaries (which couldn't have been too big)! Anyways, as usual, this was a joy to hang with you on! PS: I saw below that someone mentioned "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" with Goldblum. That is absolutely one of my favorite horror movies, and is still the movie I think of when I think of Goldblum (it was the first movie I saw him in). Definitely joining the chorus on that one. Veronica Cartright from Alien is also in it, she plays Goldblum's girlfriend. I know October is almost over, though, and you may be wanting to watch something other than a horror movie for a bit! :P
I rarely feel queasy when watching anything but this got me.
Yeah, will need a change soon haha
@@RyanCarrington Ha! I knew you would need a change soon! I think MOST reactors need a change from the relentless horror! Hey, I'll give you some great British movies for your list so you don't always have to be watching Americans all the time! "Brazil", directed by Terry Gilliam - wild, futuristic, dystopian comedy/satire, legendary movie of the 80s! "The Man Who Would Be King", starring both Sean Connery AND Michael Caine, fantastic adventure movie, those two guys together is movie gold, let me tel you. "Alfie", also with Michael Caine is hilarious, his breakout role. "Mona Lisa" is a great 80s British mob/crime movie (again with Michael Caine in a small part; this is all coincidence!). "24 Hour Party People" from 2003 is a hilarious movie about the Manchester music scene in the 70s-80s with Steve Coogan. "Monty Python's Life Of Brian" is in my top three comedies of all time. "Blow Up" is an incredible hard-to-describe movie, it's a bit of a mystery, one of the first real "modern" movies ("Alfie" also).
It IS a good movie -
Good reaction.
