The Log Inn: The Oldest Restaurant in Indiana, and Abraham Lincoln Approved! (Haubstadt, Indiana)

- Off the beaten path, and a place you probably didn’t know existed! Built in 1825, the Log Inn was a stagecoach stop, trading post, tavern and a place to dance! But in 1844, future president Abraham Lincoln stopped here to get a bite to eat, and as they say: the rest is history!
Still a great place to get home cooking and wonderful pies, it’s a must stop for Abraham Lincoln fans. The room where he dined, has Lincoln memorabilia and the original log walls. Simply a great stop for dinner, in Southern Indiana!

I live in Boonville, IN, just south west of the Lincoln's boyhood home. It's rumored that Linclon frequently used the library in Boonville which has earned the city the phrase "where Lincoln learned the law."

That bar top is most likely made from a old growth poplar tree. They was in abundance and grew very large. A tree that was used for log cabins also.
Being a lifelong Civil War buff and a native Southerner my personal hero is General Robert E. Lee, so I certainly can appreciate your own feelings as a Yankee for Abe Lincoln.
Once upon a time we used to be able to all celebrate our history, heritage, and ancestors without acrimony and ugliness. Sadly, that seems to have changed in recent years and I really lament that.
Our national unity depends on mutual respect and consideration. The whole post-war reconciliation between the North and the South was founded on the belief that both sides fought with honor for earnestly held beliefs about the nature of our federal union.
The people who strive so hard to undo that today would not have found favor with either President Lincoln or with General Lee - both of whom greatly lamented the horror and bloodshed of the War Between the States. Food for thought….
I’ve left Facebook civil war forums where people try to revise history to fit modern ideas, villainizing all confederate soldiers with one paintbrush. Even as a Yankee, I understand the south’s position, the need for national reconciliation after the war, why confederate memorials were important, and believe Robert E Lee was a good man. The important thing is to learn from history, so bad things won’t happen again, not revise it to make people comfortable or superior.

I have grown up and still live about 5 miles from here. I remember when Grandpa would take the whole family here for dinner several times a year. They definitely serve family size portions.
You definitely don’t walk away hungry!
My family and I visited the Log Inn when I got my first teaching job…of course we sat in the Lincoln Room!

Thanks Michael! Rockport is another great Lincoln history stop, they even have a village that recreates his time in Indiana. I didn’t know it existed until a friend told me about it, a few years ago.

I’ve been binge watching your videos and have been enjoying them so much! My parents were born and raised in Indiana and some of my ancestors were early settlers and pioneers in southern Indiana as well as other parts of the state! Supposedly one branch of my family were neighbors to Abraham Lincoln! Thanks for teaching this history, it’s so interesting and it’s awesome that you’re sharing your knowledge ❤️
Well I have truly enjoyed the journey, places I’ve seen, and people I’ve met! It’s something I’d always wanted to do, given all the years my Parents took us on road trips. 🙂

It’s very homey and the food is great. If you’re ever in the Evansville area, it’s a short trip above I-64, think it’s 5 minutes tops.

@@ginamaria2579 Even my local KFC stopped carrying chicken livers! That was my go-to! It’s an acquired taste though, my Mother got me liking them as a kid. “These have iron and will prevent you from getting boils.”

Always had a love of old restaurants. Here in CT we have the Griswold Inn, my favorite. Maybe one day I'll get to the Log Inn, it looks great.

Very nice. My grandfather is from Fort Wayne and my father was also born there before being raised very young in Brooklyn. He has Hoosier pride like yourself. I also remeber my grandfather be a Notre Dame football fan. Thank you for the video
Glad to do it! I’m a 6th generation Hoosier, and my parents were big into weekend road-trips across the state. I’ve just really had a love for it, since I was a kid.
Over 7 years ago, I got the idea to start this channel. People kept asking me, where they could go with their families. What started off as a three month project, has taken 6 years, and there’s a lot left! 🙂

We live in the Land of Lincoln in central , Il … his house , his museum , and his tomb , and new Salem where he lived was here when he left Indiana
I’ve wanted to get over there for many years. I’m a huge Lincoln fan!
I live very close to this place and I feel they have the best fried chicken you can ask for. Ive been around the eastern US and I cannot find one except to Buckners down south of Atlanta that even compares to this place.
His father was Thomas Lincoln was sheriff of Cumberland Co KY around the time Abe would been born. There are documents that were saved from the courthouse fire that document this fact
It's a little know fact that Mr. Lincoln was the only president to design and patent his own ship. 😊
Another fun fact: he was well known as a champion wrestler in Indiana, and is memorialized in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Roger, you should check out the yellow tavern in New Harmony.
I'm sure it's not as old as log inn but it's a cool old spot to stop for a burger and a beer.
I love little old places with history, sounds like a good one! I’ve been all over New Harmony but never ate there.

Oh my goodness those Chicken Livers look so good! Have you been to The Chicken House just on the edge of New Albany? They have really good livers! ALL their food is so good!
Haven’t been to the Chicken House. Since KFC stopped carrying them, Lee’s is the only place I’ve been able to get them locally.

This is a bit old but does anyone know what Abe had for chow? Not sure what anyone was eating out in the 1850's but my mom made the best chicken livers for her fav son, by request, on my Bday.
Warrenton Indiana
The official map address is Haubstadt, but if you look up Warrenton, and zoom in: you see the Log Inn. The Log Inn brochure has both town names mentioned, with Haubstadt listed first.
The tie breaker for me, was when I typed in the name of the place, in RUclips, where you register new videos, and it pulled-up Haubstadt. This feature links to online maps, and if people click on the link, they’ll be taken to a map of how to get there.
@@AdventureswithRoger ... Oh Haubstadt!! I've been there, didn't know about Warrenton though. My husband lived not far from there, Vincennes Indiana ~ LOTS of History there!! First city in Indiana, was a village during the Revolutionary War. The Fort the soldiers stayed at is roughly 1 block behind my hubby's home. Fort Knox.
