    Check out the Black Friday prices on Amazon - these two devices generally see good discounts (the 830 has a BIG saving)... Edge 830: amzn.to/3Ghl1B0 | Edge 1030 Plus: amzn.to/47Osy60 [Affiliate links - as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases]

    Nice comparison review Monty. I just bought the 1030+ mainly for the larger screen (being old I'm a bit optically challenged) and the long battery life as I find the Varia drained the battery on my previous Edge 1000 very quickly. Wiggle were selling it briefly for £299.99 so it was a 'bargain'. I'm not a big fan of the chevrons used for routing, preferred the highlighted route on the 1000.
    Anyway, keep the reviews coming Monty. They always bring a smile 😊

      I purchased the 1030 plus for the exact same reasons as yourself..Unfortunately had nothing but issues with screen freeze,climb pro not working on a route and the garmin radia light doesn’t work properly with the 1030 plus…a bit of a nightmare !

    Hi. I've just switched from 830 to 1030+. First thing I've noticed is that the 1030+'s screen is somewhat pale as compared to 830. On top of that it lacks of more vivid colours like in the 830.

      there are tweaks in the map settings you can do, but from what I've seen they moved to use the glass they use on another of their computers in the Plus, to mute the glare and reflections in full sun but retain the excellent touch functionality even in rain.

      @@freshouttanope I think you might be right as for the reduction of the glare on the screen. It does not reflect as much as the 830 did.

    I your own words, ‘I like this video a lot.’
    I have a 1030+ that was gifted to me in late 2021. It hasn’t skipped a beat except for when I tried using it as a trainer and it decided the next ride not to record GPS after I changed profiles (I thought it would turn on GPS as per profile - I was wrong) and, having thought I fixed said issue, it did it again the next ride though this time I thought I was following a course - I wasn’t, though the computer decided to gaslight me with all the data and. Mapping it wasn’t recording!
    I have never liked the mapping on the Garmin system. More often than not it tells me to do a U Turn when rerouting and then the maps are so cluttered in city areas ( I live in Sydney) it is easy to miss turns.
    So, I have actually bought a Karoo 2 on yours and others reviews. Trying the 45 day trial. My rides are mamil like with mostly between 45km and 60km and occasional 160km club rides so I think the battery will be a non issue. I feel like a rarely need to charge the 1030+ and the one time it was 20%, it still completed a 70km ride with 10% left. Karoo 2 I will need to be on top of more.
    If the 45 day trial works out I will probably sell the 1030+. Thank you Monty.

New to biking as hobby and fitness routine, and I’m old enuff not to care how fast and how many horses I can pump out…it’s cool to cruise on a fast bike tho hahahaha.

    After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.

    sir, does edge devices give FTP info by themselves, without any apparatus?

    • @Sportivecyclist
      @Sportivecyclist  7 месяцев назад

      No. You need a power meter in order to measure your power output. The Edge will calculate it, either by guiding you through a dedicated FTP test or automatically based on your ride data, but as far as I am aware, this needs a power meter (and heart rate strap).

      I've read many reviews of it and they are generally very favourable and much better than the explore "1". Basically saying it's like a slightly smaller 1030+ with the more advanced training related things cut out, to not tread on the 1030/1040 buyers toes.

  • @FallNorth
    @FallNorth Год назад

    After having a perfectly good phone's sh1tty fragile micro USB socket die (which was very stupidly soldered to the main motherboard so a nightmare to try to get fixed), strangely one of the things I dislike about the 1030+ is it still didn't have the infinitely superior USB-C port, that is military grade in strength. The 1040 and Explore 2 apparently do.
    I'm swithering between the 1030+ (annoyingly missed a bargain recently on that) and the Explore 2. I suppose the 1030+ has such a good battery life it'll last really well even on a long tour and just need to charge it very carefully. I.e. not plunk a pannier on it in a cramped tent or try to charge it on the move.
    I've a Garmin watch which already gives suggestions as to running workouts and so on but not cycling though it can track cycling and even navigate it, after a fashion. It's interestign to see how the similar features go back and forth across the devices.

    Just ordered the Garmin Edge 1030 plus. I've been using my Garmin Edge 130 (not the 130 plus) since 2020 and it's been top notch on my rides simple as anything! However, I want the bigger and better animal now, plus the 1030 plus has dropped to a reasonable price like you said so a no brainer.

      I'm quite the opposite to your situation, I have the 1030 Plus but I've broken 3 non OEM garmin out mounts due to the weight, it weighs almost the same as my old Sony Xperia Compact Phone, I'm thinking getting the 130 since I have many bikes and the out front Mount is expensive

      @@MegaXtc11 Interesting you have broken a few Garmin mounts due to the 1030plus weight. I have found it fine on my MTB rides, so far, and better having it via the Garmin outward mount (out the 1030plus box) on the handlebars to where I use to have my little 130 mounted on the stem. Will have to keep an eye on that possible issue in the future if I do come across it

    My dream Cycling GPS would be an enlarged Garmin Edge Explore 2 (with a Larger 3.5" display) and (utilize the Bluetooth to Pair it to a Bluetooth speaker (like the JBL flip or charge).. That way it could be set up to give Audible Turn-by-Turn directions.. That way you don't have to take your eyes off the road to figure out which way to turn. I have some vision issues, and they make all Cycling GPS completely useless to me because i can't SEE OR HEAR, when to turn..
    Most casual cyclist don't want/need any of the fitness metrics on these computer..
    They just want to get safely from point A to point B. Until that happens, i can't justify spending $600-$700.. And Garmin won't allow you to down load Cycling Maps on a car GPS.. So Using a Car specific GPS will try to put you unsafely on the Freeway or tell you to make a U-turn on a know bike path...

      Hi, I'm down to the Explore 2 vs 1030+ myself, and like the explore 2, very close to pulling the trigger. I did see in another review the "beeps" on the 1030+ are louder than the 1030 etc, not sure about the Explore 2. If you want loud .. you could maybe use a phone app with something like RideWithGPS?
      The reason I say this as I experimented a while back with my old phone that I currently use for navigation, bluetoothed to a separate speaker that was in my top bar bag, to get loud audible alerts when my Varia Radar detected something. It worked. Kind of what you are suggesting but doable with a phone. Given these devices all have bluetooth it would certainly be good if they could pair to a speaker but I've never researched that.
      I use an old (but not very old) android phone for navigation, so if I smash it (which I've come very close to doing!) I don't smash my good phone. IT's fine but the battery life is bad if screen is on, and it's absolutely USELESS (and might die) in any rain.
      EDIT: On that phone I've also used Google maps for navigation which gives audible turn by turn but again that eats battery and it can ignore the routes I send to it and choose worse ones.. but anyway. There are various phone base apps. I mean lets face it the Karoo etc are basically like locked down phones with one app dominating.
