    My grandfather was born in Colorado from Norwegian Immigrants. He joined the 10th mountain division in 1943 at the age of 18. He had a good upbringing which helped him learn to ski at a early age. He ended up fighting the Germans in the Alps of Northern Italy, not far from Torino where the Winter Olympics were held years ago. It was a pleasure to hear his stories until his Alzheimer's got the best of him in the late 90s until 07' when he passed. Terrible disease, but very proud of him and his service. His name was Edward Andersen "Big Ed" due to his 6'4 height.

    • @HandleMyBallsYouTube
      @HandleMyBallsYouTube 5 лет назад +16

      No we didn't, we used ski troops, yes, but mostly only in the north, but by the 1940's most of the Soviet offensives came trough the karelian Isthmus, were there really wasn't enough space for motti tactics and ski troops. By that time Semyon Timoshenko had replaced Voroshilov in command, and the original plan had been scrapped, the Red Army was now planning to put all the pressure on the Isthmus, and push trough with sheer mass, which meant the only thing we could do was dig in and hold.

We're not just limited to skis. What I wanted to point out, is that this American Mountain Division isn't anything special in Norway, since almost all of our troops can go skiing. ;)

    • @MrDanielsamuelsen
      @MrDanielsamuelsen 5 лет назад +3

      Plus, let me remind you that US troops train in NORWAY for combating on skis. Which means that WE train YOUR troops. We also don't need to train in every terrain possible. We don't need to train for desert terrains, because we don't have deserts. It's only one battalion who trains for that, because they're being dragged into the Middle East by the USA.

    my dad was an officer in 10th mtn, i had a drill sergeant that was in 10th mtn too but was a private. it was weird when i realized my drill sergeant actually deployed with my dad, different companies but same unit so they actually fought alongside each other at least once. my drill sergeant always wondered why i looked so familiar, after i got out of basic i told my dad about my drill sergeant and after comparing stories i had heard from both of them, we realized that my drill sergeant saw my dad shoot a guy in the neck. the guy was laying down so the bullet went in through the neck and bounced on the floor and exited out his butt, it was something everyone laughed about at the time and later turned into one of those hella gory moments that messed people up later in life.
