- Timothy Winter's (Shaykh Abdul Hakim Murad) BBC Radio 3 interview on his conversion to Islam with Joan Bakewell.
Joan Bakewell talks to Cambridge University chaplain and Muslim convert Tim Winter, known as Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad. He explores the moral sense of the sacred, instilled in him by his mother, his search for a connection with his creator and what it means to be a Muslim convert in Britain today.
Winter made his own journey towards Islam via the Unitarian church, bringing Western academic methods to his studies of Islam and its history. He is strongly critical of Wahhabism and of the kinds of Islamic interpretation and fundamentalism which underlie extremism and justifications of violence. A participant in inter-faith dialogue at high levels, he has recently returned from the Vatican in an attempt to improve Muslim Catholic relations. (December, 2009)

Selam from Albania. I left Islam at the age of 15 and spent 7 years as an atheist & anti-theist who hated Islam and religions. Then I read Carl Jung's book "Archetypes and The Collective Unconscious" where among stories from other religions, he interpreted Surah Al-Kahf in the light of religious belief explained as a necessary thing, almost inherent to the human consciousness.
That book made me change my mind about religion so I started researching all major religions. I came to the point where either I'd be a pseudo-Buddhist (because I accepted Buddha to be a great man) or a Sufi Muslim with a Perennial understanding of religion. Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad and Shaykh Hamza Yusuf were the most influential figures that made me choose Islam.
Shaykh Abdal Hakim is super intelligent and I just enjoy listening to his voice with a British accent talkin about the man that in 7th century Arabia gave us the Rahmah that now influences the souls of billions of people.
Maa shaa Allah but there is no one who understands Islam properly and then becomes an atheist or agnostic its impossible, only those who don't understand try to look for something else.

This is so awesome, we are close in age and have a similar experience...converting alone in an academic fashion, not really knowing muslims until staying in the middle east, first visit Morroco, loving and learning Arabic from the start.
I am sunni and dont enjoy music as my brother does, yet in Islam we are totally free to live and let live.

@Yassin Zao the prophet encouraged people to sing and enjoy entertainment in a positive light he used to travel sing himself and tell others to inorder to speed up the journey and make it easier. Only Allah prohibits and there is no prohibition of music what so ever. Allah created people with musical talents and they express it through singing or play instruments. Its human expression created by Allah, its upto the one's with such talent to use it in good service.
@Enlighten life I haven't heard of anything regarding the Prophet (PBUH) encouraging singing. Could you kindly provide references to support this as well as the story about the Prophet (PBUH) encouraging people to sing to make the journey seem easier?

@@MotorStorm66 That is not the reason, but he speaks like the real scholars i know from the Arab world, scholars speak in a different way from people working in dawah, they have that extra something and i noticed he talks like them.

Dr. Murad is right that many European govts. are not good towards muslim refugees, but when it comes to Pakistan, it has a considerable Christian population, but since some years back there are some terrible crimes being committed against Christians along with other minority communities in the name of blasphemy. Pakistan is the country of my birth and I am deeply troubled by these criminal acts against all commumities.

I'm looking at Sufism (via Guenon), a lot appeals. I don't think a peoples choosing to not allow mosques to be built is a problem however.
To allow that an imposed liberal democracy is a bad universal template, and then believe in universalist religious freedom, is a little inconsistent.
Mr Winter speaks of admiration of Mohammed as a nationalist hero, working to manifest justice in an imperfect world. Many European nationalist movements feel the same way. Maybe the argument for such nationalism in US, Canada or Australia say is different, but more power surely to French that want France to remain French. I would even say that peaceful conversion of France to Islam subsequently is MORE likely when Islam listens to the feeling of injustice of the European Identitarians and nativists. The liberal democratic and Christian establishments certainly are not listening.
That multiculturalism is causing tensions and disunity in Europe is clear. I think the most noble and long term strategy and etiquette for the Muslim world is to respect the cultural trouble that is happening and stand back, maybe even support European nationalism and native spirituality, rather than exploit the spiritual weakness. Show the better way, then convert via example rather than division.
If the respect for other Peoples of the Book is real, there is no need to build mosques in places whose ancestors have long been Christian and is now being eaten by Modernity. Go to other countries for mosques, continue to pray and be devout and be a living example if living in Western Europe without the buildings. Is that so unreasonable a proposal?
Guenon moved to Egypt to stay ensconsed authentically in his chosen Tradition. Are Muslims that demand the right to build Mosques wherever they are (modern state defined) citizens really doing so for the sake of the Divine?
Christians in some of the Arab Muslim world would install a very large cross in the mountains and villages with no permission but rather they see it as something normal to do lol. Mosques in Europe are not mosque like, they are designed to not be extremely visible rather looks ike an obscure one or a cultural centre. I think anyone who truly loves God would be fair and non intimid but then there's many sects in 1 religion and its followers express it differently.
If we'll go by you're logic then Hindus can't have temples and Jews no synagogue. Or is you're problem with Muslims and mosques only. People travel and become citizens Of different countries whats the problem if they have a place of worship?

@@enlightenlife2840 It could be as you say re: religions staying until Judgement, even as the Qur'an and Trinitarianism are in direct contradiction.
On the other hand, "Paganisms" like indigenous and eskimo traditions, even say a faithful Confucianism, don't fare so well compared to "religions" (which it's worth mentioning，many scholars don't consider the Indians traditions of what we now call Hinduism before British rule a religion, it instead became one to survive and defend itself).
The religious form has a strong tendency to dislodge time/place/body/ancestry connections, which aids modern disassociation and abstraction. Perhaps Islam least of all, but still. A bias towards Heaven and against Earth, even though the Creator (at least by the Qur'an) is of neither.

Wahhabism isn't a real thing, it's a Western and Orientalist production. Nobody who the West or some other Muslims would call Wahhabi ever refers to themselves as such. It's little better than when the non-Muslims used to call us Muhammadans. There are people who claim to and try and follow the Salaf. That is, the first 3 pious generations of Muslims of the Ummah. The actions and statements of those who claim to be Salafi and in actual fact go against the way if the Salaf, that does not make the term Salafi less correct and valuable. Any orthodox and practising Muslim who wishes to follow the pure, organic, orthodox Sunnah Islam, is by necessity, Salafi.

Interesting, and granted a 30 minute interview did not give him time to got into specifics, but I find Tim's skirting around the fact that Qu'ran and Hadiths definitely do put women on a 2nd tier to men, rather disingenuous. I get the impression of a C of E vicar becoming rather embarrassed when confronting the specific rules on slave keeping in Exodus

Aisha RA was a scholar in academia too, and had famous male scholars as students. fatima zahra RA use to give sermons in the holy prophet SAW mosque in medina. it wasn't restricted to the noble family, but Imam Malik's daughter was also a scholar. in islam women are allowed to hold high positions including that of a judge. i wonder what steven sakur would think of what u said after meeting prime minister hasina begum!!! so all in all more progress than hilary clinton
