I was in the audience at this recording. The shows were not recording in one go. Robert Palmer was not there, it was pre-recorded. Also, Jason Donovan performed Sealed With a Kiss, but it wasn't shown until two weeks later.
I agree with you, some of my earliest memories were from 1989 and it had some great tunes from the Bangles, Nina Cherry, Madonna, Donna Summer, Kylie, Alice Cooper, Tears for fears to name a few. Music has become rubbish nowadays especially since 2016/'17, far too many twits with guitars and bland tunes.
I have a soft spot for music from the late 80s cos I was coming into my teens and was starting to understand things a bit more, and though 1989 was a pivotal and tough year for me, I remember it with fondness, whereas my childhood in the early to mid 80s, though great in so many ways, was a confusing time for me.. That said I know what you mean. I think its why in the early 90s, Grunge coming into the fore was kind of a "welcome change" for many. Same with Britpop in the mid 90s.
My favourite band is Japan and they split in December 1982. David Sylvian was the lead singer. Albums were Tin Drum, Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Quiet Life and Oil On Canvas.

About the worst old episode I've ever seen. Especially when there was some seriously great, original music being made at the time. Midnight Oil were mentioned being in the charts in the run down, to mention just one that managed to sneak through the gap into foul smelling shit that was 99% thanks to the Stock Aitken Waterman, long may they rot in hell.
Given the state of the music industry today where you have the likes of Ed Sheeran occupying 16 places in the top 30 at one point, (yeah I couldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes thinking that was just......wrong) I never ever in my wildest dreams would have considered myself saying this but Stock, Aitkin and Waterman........please come back, all is forgiven. I used to be a religious listener of the Radio 1 top 40 on a Sunday afternoon but now I find listening to Radio 1 "or" commercial radio for that matter too painful. It would appear that no station can go any longer than 3 minutes without bangin on about some reality tv crap or playing a cardboard manufactured reality tv artists song that no one is going to remember approximately 6 weeks later. At least the songs that appear here we "STILL" remember to this day and some of the bands and artists are still performing. You can't say that about anything created in the 21st Century almost like the generation today were either absent or just weren't interested when that longevity skillset was being passed on.
Alice Cooper's Poison, Aerosmith's Pump, The Bangles Eternal Flame, Texas I don't want a Lover, and Beautiful South's Song For Whoever.....they are good ones, to name a few.
Well some of this stuff obviously. That's just my opinion and whats it to you anyway? You don't like it then the answer for you is simple...."Don't listen to it" and don't bother coming on to RUclips to watch stuff you don't like. Simple really.
Just read someone’s comment the music was really going down hill then. Love the 80s , but that’s so true of the music here at the end of the 80s . Terrible
Wow, only two tracks worth a listen here. Dark dark period indeed. The only good music back then was underground only to explode in 91... Glad I was a teenager in the 90's!
1989 that was the year I'd had enough. of drugs and raves so I decided to move abroad, I went to holland for 5 years ,then came back to England because I'd had enough of Dutch drugs and raves ,that's when I realised I just needed to go with the flow
There was some crap songs and/or albums back then, But nowhere near as much as now, And this was only in May of 1989 a month later June 25th episode -Plenty of good/really good singles + albums came out in whole of 1989-And you must of seen the other songs in singles charts in the top 40 countdown they weren't awful were they
A rare live performance from Robert palmer before anyone reply I aware he might be miming. This is a good song it should have gone higher up the charts at least top twenty bill withers would be proud of palmer yodelling at least he can also hold notes.
89 and onwards is where music started to be pure crap its amazing that 1 and 2 years before this video top of the pops was full of fantastic songs other thaan donna summer in this video
2 songs in the top 40 that featured yodeling and a Gangster Rapper rhyming about pulling a ladyboy after spiking his/her drink with an afrodisiac. The 80s were fcukin awesome!
By this time the best music was behind the scenes in clubs, pirate radio stations, alot of great rap coming over from america etc, unless you were a youthful 18 year old like myself it would probably would have seemed that pop quality was on a downward spiral. I suppose that's when acid house took over as it was something new and fresh, a trend like punk in the seventies. Being a synth fan I found my calling at this time, so many great tunes with great baselines just kept on coming and coming, Hifi was all Cd and cd single, vinyl went ballistic with tons of EuroDance and American Stuff, trying to nab the latest tune in the back street record stores that were everywhere. Great times. Music was reborn but you had to like and be in the acid house scene to get the best of it, otherwise you were given what you were given from the charts and a mixed bag it was. But oh boy if you loved dance, synth and rap and a cracking baseline with many quality samples this was the best time
Always liked Funky Cold Medina. I’ve got a respect a rapper who doesn’t take themselves too seriously, for that I like Prof Green’s Need You Tonight both have very clever lyrics.
YIKES!!! I LIVED THROUGH THIS, WELL I'M GLAD THE CAPELLA SHIT PASSED ME BY. WOWZAS!! I THINK A CAR ALARM WOULD BE PREFERABLE. PWL WAS WAY TOO PROMINANT PUMPING OUT ALL HIS SIMPLISTIC SYMPHONIES AROUND THIS TIME TOO.
Edelweiss - how did that make it to #5?? I don't remember it, and for good reason! Some great artists and tunes in the charts, bit for me Stevie Nicks - Rooms on Fire is the best of that lot.
I used to feel bad for the younger generations with the pop music they have to endure, but after hearing Edelweiss from 1989, I don't feel so bad for them anymore.

80's music was at it's best in the early to mid 80's by the end of the decade I couldn't help feel something was missing.

i thought the music at in the early to mid 80s was borderline outstanding, but something started going a bit wonky towards the end of the decade...

this is a true epic episode!! the theme from prisoner c block and funky cold medina! just brought back the whole year to me this episode did

Especially Donna Summer. What a legend of a song !
Yeah, I do have a soft spot for the year. It was a difficult one for me but I still have a soft spot for it.

I really enjoyed TOP OF THE POPS '85.. a lot more then '89.

Thankfully in 1989 I was in a secure psychiatric care unit and they didn't let us watch disturbing shit like this. I was one of the lucky ones.....
There might have been a lot of shite in 1989, but there was some good stuff. I have a soft spot for the year personally.
100% shite. There was literally nothing good in 1989. Even Morrissey was shit.
Alice Cooper's Poison, Aerosmith's Pump, The Bangles Eternal Flame, Texas I don't want a Lover, and Beautiful South's Song For Whoever.....they are good ones, to name a few.

Some real classics in there. Rather liked that first song. Even PC Hollis turned up..And a by the book stock Aiken and Waterman song by Donna.

Fun Fact: Edelweiss were sued by Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA as they did not have their permission to sample SOS on their song heard here.

Apart from Donna summer I've no idea who rest are and no memory of the songs .I was past watching it by then .my time was early 80s.the best
Notice the mistake after the Lynne Hamilton performance, Simon says it was Lynne Anderson!
I beg your pardon?!😂
Plenty good acts 89 Madonna Gloria Estevan Texas neah cherry Cyndi lauper Donna summer and Belinda Carlile to name a few.

The theme tune to Prisoner cell block H... and we tell the younger generation how better our music was back then. This episode says different 😂
Not all of it was shit in May of 1989, singles + albums wise, I mean the showing of the singles chart in this come on now pal

Ferry Across The Mersey was a good rendition. Liked it!

What a mess of a show in terms of music. Especially the first one...what the hell?!

Never mind kids, Madchester/baggy is just around the corner and things will never be the same again...
I love the 80s but at the end it really had got bad (for the most part)
NOTTINGHAM FOREST FOREVER
Only good bit was wasp at end
Is that the KLF in disguise?
Too many annoying music samples in 1989, practically every other song was a song remix of another song.
True, and sounds like what a music critic might say about 2010s music!
i wouldn't know, as far as i know music stopped being made about 25 years ago.
Yeh, I lost count of how many songs had the sample 'Aaah Yehh' 😆
It's been like that ever since.
Mayo messes up his introduction to Lyn Hamilton by saying Radio 1 rather than Top Of The Pops. LOL.
At this time TOTP was show live and simulcast on Radio 1, so not entirely wrong. Saying TOTP would have made more sense though.
Appeared on TOTP with a few dogs... Ended up in Ace Ventura..
No not Simon Mayo.
Sam Brown's video featuring Jeff Stewart aka Reg from The Bill.

The music was great for its time ⏲️ but where did they dig that 🤔 fake audience from 🙄😳 ?
What is that bloke doing with that doll in the back during Edelweiss.
the first 2 songs were the kind of stupidity pop music hasn't even yet recovered from
