    In this video I helped a friend replace a thermostat in their 1999 Mercury Marquis. This process should work for many Mercury vehicles with the V8.

    I have a 2003 Crown Victoria. The engine set up is identical to this car. I rarely drive it. 3 nights ago I let it idle in the driveway for 25 minutes. I normally try to do that once a week if I haven't driven it. Well it ran hot. Just last night I crunk it up to see if it would start to over heat are see if there was leaks. Well there was no problems at all and it ran for 35 minutes and the last 10 was with the ac on. The fan works so I'm guess when it ran hot the other night that was a sign of the thermostat starting to fail. Well as cheap as a thermostat is and this video which makes it look so easy I will be surely trying this on my car.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  5 лет назад +1

      Sounds reasonable. I would change that as well. However, I don't agree with starting a vehicle just to let it run. Drive it or leave it parked.

    I forgot to mention - it's a very good idea to replace the cap on the coolant bottle on these Fords. Most use a 16lb cap, costs something like $7. I pressure test every radiator/coolant bottle cap I come across when I'm servicing vehicles and I've found these Fords have a very high failure rate on the caps (usually won't hold anywhere near 16psi).

      I have a question I replaced my valve covers and my intake manifold with a dorman brand intake the car was running fine now two days later the engine idles louder and requires me to hit the pedal a bit harder and the car sounds louder during acceleration. Is this because I'm using a 180 t stat instead of the 195 or do you think the intake is faulty I don't see any coolant leaking anywhere from back portion of the motor so I'm not sure what's going on thank you.

    I changed mine a month ago...I only lost about about 2 tablespoons of antifreeze when I took the housing off....I replaced the thermostat because of codes saying car was running too cold. it was 40 outside and the water temp never got above 160...after it never got above 190 with it being high 90's...most of the time running it runs a 189...it only took about 10 minutes...most auto stores wanted a 130 bucks to change it...

  • @paulferguson752

    Robert, I have a question that I hope you can answer. 5 days ago my 2009 Grand Marquis overheated. The engine light came on, the windshield fogged up and steam started coming out of the hood. I limped the car home, half a mile, opened the hood, and let it cool. The left side of the engine was soaked. After it cooled I added about 2 quarts of water. Took it to my mechanic, and he did a pressure check and found no leaks. Still, I'm heading to Florida in a couple days, pulling an 8X10 utility trailer. WHAT could have caused this leak? I was hoping it was a simple hose break, but I guess not. Could it be the thermostat? And where did the water come from all over the engine? Thanks for your response, Robert. Paul

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  Год назад

      There is no way for me to tell without looking at it. I can't see it from here. If the vehicle engine overheated, you need to determine why??? Then fix that so that it won't force coolant out of whatever leaked during the last overheating incident.

      The 2000 Crown Vic and the 1999 Grand Marquis have exactly the same type of Thermostat Housing -- located in exactly the same place.
      Correct Thermostat is : MOTORAD #5228 -195 JV -- Holds temp at 192 F to 198 F
      Correct Gasket is: MOTORCRAFT #RG-571 -- Gasket goes ON TOP of thermostat.

    fan would , would have kicked on if you would have turned on the normal air conditioning or even the heater that's how a lot of cars and up overheating because they leave their cars outside and let it idle and cool at the same time it works for new newer vehicles but not the older ones

    Hey brotha, I changed my thermostat like u showed in the video so that's new, but my temp gauge is rising still and the ac blows hot air, and yesterday I was at D.Q. in drive thru and the temp went almost to top I live 3 blocks away had my lil boy or would have walked, anyways I opened the hood and the radiator hose was swelled up, Any ideas?? It's a 99 Marquis and I'm sure water pump/ radiator are original.. Thanks Brotha
