      I'll be making this for my boyfriend too. Could you give me an idea how much yarn I'll need per colour? I've never crocheted before so I don't have an idea on this. She said that she used 700yds which I'm assuming is per colour but ofcourse my boyfriend will need a lot more since he's tall and has a bigger build so I'm not sure how much yarn to go for

      Hi, I'm very new to crochet and the yarn I'm getting for this is no 1 weight because no 2 weight doesn't have a good stock but no 1 yarn recommends using 3mm hooks but she recommends 3.5mm hook for this project. Is it okay to use a 3.5mm hook on no 1 weight or will it make the project a disaster?

    • @ravenlunatic1177
      @ravenlunatic1177 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@tirthalily Hi. I’ll try and answer your question the best I can. I admire your willingness to dive in and mix things up. The beauty of making an item is you control all the options. You can use any yarn, weight, hook size, etc. Each will produce different results. You can absolutely substitute a #1 weight yarn for a #2 weight, but there will be differences in your finished garment. Using the lighter weight yarn will produce a lighter more open/lacy garment. You can change that by using a smaller hook to make the lacy parts smaller. By using a smaller yarn you might have to make extra rows to equal the width of the stripes the pattern states. Meaning if it calls to make 2 rows of one color you might need to make 3 or 4 rows in order to achieve the same visual results. Does that make sense? Not the most fun part of crocheting, but one of the smartest ways to help make your item turn out its best is to make a swatch. All that means is to work up a small version of the item you want to make in pattern using your intended hook and yarn. Traditionally swatches are made in 4”x 4” size or 10 x 10 centimeters. By working this swatch up you will be able to see several things; how the yarn looks in the pattern, how many stitches/ rows needed; how it drapes, etc. it’s definitely worth the time for your finished item to be successful. Just crochet the number of chains that will equal the 4”(10 cm) and follow the pattern until you make a 4”(4cm)square. You can also make the garment by holding 2 strands of your chosen yarn together - essentially creating the #2 weight yarn. You would use the hook size the designer used. You just have to be mindful that you are being consistent and not losing one of the strands while you crochet. Holding the 2 strands together might create a slightly thicker fabric. It shouldn’t cause any issues, just something to be aware of. I hope I didn’t confuse you too badly. What sounds right in my head may not translate well into words. If I’ve lost you along the way, please let me know, and I’ll try and make things clearer. Enjoy making the polo. Cheers from FL😺

    • @tirthalily
      @tirthalily 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@ravenlunatic1177 thank you so much for your reply, your explanation is actually the most detailed one I've come across after all the researching I did. I have never crocheted before, I actually don't even know the basics because I don't have a hook to practice with. I'll be getting my first hook with this project and this will also be my first project. Otherwise I know a little bit of knitting, and I made a scarf for my boyfriend last month after learning knitting basics in December. That has been all for my knitting for now. This shirt too is for my boyfriend so I don't want it to turn out in a way where it doesn't look masculine, like if I use a 3.5mm hook with #1 yarn and it gets too lacy then it might be a problem as that could look more feminine or if it gets too thin if I use 3mm hook and again starts looking feminine.. I don't know I'm just nervous and confused since I haven't even touched a crochet hook before and don't have any idea on how crocheted patterns turn out.
      I'll try looking for #2 yarns but if I still don't find a good stock then I'll just use a 3mm hook on #1 yarn and go with your suggestion of adding extra stitches. I don't want to risk using two yarns together because I'm still not familiar with crochet.

    • @ravenlunatic1177
      @ravenlunatic1177 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@tirthalily Glad I could help. Wow, I’m even more impressed you haven’t done any crocheting and want to start with a polo. I understand that the project has got you excited to try your hand at crochet. That’s great! I’m sure others have told you it would be better to start with a smaller project, just to see if you even like crocheting, don’t get too frustrated, end up not finishing it, etc. Yes, they can and in a lot of circumstances, are all true. But that excitement can overcome a lot. I will definitely recommend you swatch it out just to make sure you get the look you are after. I went back and watched her video again. She does use a #2 yarn, but says that it feels more like a #1 weight to her. Looking at the yarn, I have to say I agree with her. So that solves not being able to get the color you want in the #2 yarn. The yarn fiber type is important. The yarn she used is a blend of cotton and acrylic. That gives structure to your piece but allows it to drape (without growing). 100% cotton fiber has a tendency to stretch out (aka grow). That’s the nature of the fiber. It’s also a good idea to think about when you think this garment will be worn most - seasons, air conditioning vs. heating. That will help you decide on the fiber. Cotton is great for wearing in the warm weather months due to its light & airiness. Wool can also be a great fiber to work with as it’s very durable, it keeps you warm in the cold and cooler in the heat. The most important thing to remember when buying wool is to get a 100% super wash merino. The super wash is the important part. You need it to be washable. If it’s just the regular wool roving, if you don’t hand wash the item, you’ll end up having it felt on you. Translation - it will shrink in size from something an adult could wear, down to a child or doll sized item. A mix of fibers is usually a good way to go. Either that or 100% acrylic. Acrylic is usually the least expensive and widely available in sizes & color. It isn’t as drapey as the cotton/acrylic mix and it will tend to be a bit warmer of a garment. I’m not talking about huge degree of temperature comfort, just another thing to consider. That being said, as a beginner you might want to check local thrift shops just to get your hands on a crochet hook and yarn. Something you can learn the basic stitches and play with it to get comfortable with your tension, holding the yarn, which way you prefer to hold the hook, etc. There are a lot of beginner crochet videos out there showing basic stitches you’ll need to know to make this project. I’d check them out first just to get comfortable with the process. I’m sure this designer has videos on her channel showing you basics. I also highly recommend Bagoday crochet channel here on RUclips. She walks you through everything clearly and has over 1200 videos of anything you can possibly want to make. Check her out. She has a great teaching style. There are others who are also great teachers. Click on a video and see their style. Just because you aren’t connecting with the way someone is showing how to do the stitch, don’t give up on it. Everyone has their own style of teaching. Just click on another’s video and it might just be the one you have the “aha” moment. Don’t forget RUclips allows you to change the playback speed of a video. You can click on the gear icon either in the top right corner or directly beneath the video depending on where you are watching it. A pop up box will show you many options. That might help to clear a step up for you. If you were able to knit, you should find crochet a bit easier. You are only worried about 1 stitch and not a bunch of stitches on the needle at once. It’s a lot more forgiving. Let me know how the polo turns out. I wish you the best of luck in your crochet journey. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I’ll do my best to help. The crocheting community on RUclips is very supportive. You’ll find many people that want to see you succeed. Cheers from FL😺

    Love the shirt and your teaching methods! I've been crocheting a while but am mostly self taught. Like to find videos like yours that include written instructions as I'm trying to learn to read patterns. Having both is great for that purpose. Have a question, could you attach front panels to back panel then do sleeves? Then the sleeves would only have to be connected on the bottom side. Thx!!💜
