UPDATED REVIEW: ruclips.net/video/z6803CHHLFY/видео.html ps. There have been some reports of Lagom Mini’s stalling with espresso grinding use. I can’t speak to this as mine has never stalled - even grinding at is finest range. I hope to share more about this in the future but I’ve gotten word from option-O that this doesn’t happen to every unit and that they’re planning to fix this in the near future. But please be aware this is something to consider.
Great to see so many options for budget grinders these days. Back when I first got into home espresso 8 years ago, the Rancilio Rocky was considered the only budget option and the Mazzer Mini was the gold standard (I opted for ths middle road with the Baratza Vario). At the time, I thought someone could make a lot of money by designing an affordable, well designed grinder with a good burr set.
As someone who participated in the early trial in the Lagom Mimi 38mm, Yes you can grind espresso from mini and motor is rated for that. I asked the factory why does not say espresso on that is because it will take about 1mins30 second to grind for one dose, and they don't want people buying that for espresso and complaining about 1mins30seconds grind for espresso
Just bought this (just came back in stock!). 48mm of course, gonna b doing both filter and espresso. Just wanted to say thanks for the help choosing! Super excited
@@David-wh7rm omg i thought i did, when i had it in cart it was march, then it ran out and i had to redo checkout. Just checked my email, i got the mid-april release... damn... i bought it within like 30min of the email too. I knew it would go quite but didn't expect it would go so quick. One potential benefit of getting a later release is that they might fix or improve things, like the stalling for example. Silver lining? :)
Thanks Kyle, another fantastic video. Can I suggest, if no one else suggested already, another video on the comparison of the Lagom Mini with one or two of the premium hand grinders such as the K-plus and C40 - is speed really the only major difference between them.
The best limited space setup is the 48mm Mini and Bambino for starters. More advance users it is the 48mm + Argos. These also make great travel setups. I can’t wait to get my Mini in the mail next month.
@@KyleRowsell if you are going for portability then you can beat Nomad + Mini + Kettle fits all in your backpack. I wonder if you run the mini off a battery
My primary coffee drink is espresso with oat milk. Filter coffee I drink black. I think the Lacom Mini will be added to my list of possible grinders in the future. Right now I use the grinder built into my Breville Barista Pro. I like the design and small size factor of the Lagom Mini (in addition to all its performance pros). I make 1-2 drinks a day on my espresso machine so I think with my lower usage this might be an interesting option. Thanks Kyle for your great content!
You're great Kyle. Love your videos. Been here a long time. They keep getting better. You're my favourite coffee youtuber. I watch a lot of different coffee youtube people. Happy holidays. (no dairy)
Thanks Kyle. I really like this video. I use a comandante mk3 for filter coffee. 32 grams for 1:18 ratio for me and my wife for light days and 36 grams 1:16 ratio for normal days. Light when one of us starts feeling that anxiety thing. Recipe is always the same 64 for bloom then add 192-320-448-572. It’s a bummer that the mini won’t be able to make filter coffee for two and it seems from your video it’s for a single coffee drinker. Honestly speaking I’ve been hand grinding the MK3 since 2017 for the V60 and it’s time to go electric. Wanted to venture into espresso and bought a Flair 58 and SMH on hand grinding 18-20 grams on 5 clicks for espresso. I’m in the market for a great machine and I have been enjoying your comparisons. Keep up the good work brother! I hope I make a decision soon.
1. I do not add anything to my coffee, it is perfect just the way it is. 2. 30 seconds grind time for filter is fine, the kettle needs time to boil anyway. 3. I loved this video and learned a lot. Thank you, Kyle!
Man Kyle, you just killed it! Awesome. This will be on my late mail to 🎅. And I prefer splitting my double shots in 2. 1 for pure espresso, 1 for a cortado. So yeah, dairy is my go for when I want to enjoy pushing a coffee to its full spectrum. Btw, my 1zpresso JX-pro could grind 18-20gr espresso in 40s, and I like the feel of crushing the beans, just a personal thing. So 30s is definitely not long. It's okay as long as the grind quality is excellent.
The burr chamber design is shared by other small conical burr grinders, very similar to old isomac grinders that also use 38mm burrs. A weber style tumbler fits perfectly on top of the lagom mini and can be used to dose beans into it
Loving the content! Always showing your passion for coffee, it is inspiring in a way! Anyways. With filter coffee, always black. Espresso is mostly as a milk drink; most likely a Cortado.
Dairy for my wife and I. Just ordered the 48mm version. Super excited ! On the flip side, am also having a bit of buyers remorse… mainly brew using the mokka pot and have a JX Pro. Not sure what to expect besides a slightly more efficient work flow…
@@KyleRowsell It’s looks and my laziness 😅 Well, it also the ease of cleaning and price point. Cleaning without the use of any tools is a big plus. Costing half as much as the Niche is the icing on the cake. Could not bring myself to spend 1k on a grinder for mokka pot brewing.
This video was great, thanks for putting this all out there. Pretty much pushing me over the edge to pull the trigger on the mini. I'm upgrading from the encore, make daily filter coffee and the rare occasional espresso. I've been looking at the niche but the price point and its espresso focus have held me back. Sounds like the mini with the larger burrs is just what I've been waiting for! Dairy 90% of the time. I do love a good pure black coffee from time to time, but some light cream for me really brings out some character in many of the coffees i drink.
Very good review! However I've already pre-ordered on Nov 2021 a (Eureka Oro) for my mom which she received last week so 5 months later as the first batch was said to have a really bad quality control. The one she received seems to be pretty good so far, and that pre-order saved a significant amount of money, being 850$CAD instead of 1050$CAD! As for me, I have a (Ceado E37SD) which is significantly bigger and pricier but what surprise me the most is the Oro doesn't even need RDT or a Brush to remove all retention and barely has any static while for my Ceado it is a must, otherwise it's a nightmare! I was considering at some point the (Lagoon P-64) at first but since it was constantly unavailable "backorder" in Canada and at least twice the price like about 2000$CAD while not even being 75-83mm, I ended up going for the Oro with that 20% saving. I gotta say though if it didn't exist, this new (Lagom Mini) would prolly had been my first high quality budget choice at ~515$CAD but again same problem... it's NEVER f******* in stock! As for the price difference between the 38 and 48mm version, it is soooo small that I don't even see a reason for the 38mm to exist to be honest. As for your milk question, I never take it with milk in the morning since I would puke if I'd take it with milk right after eating a huge cereal bowl for my breakfast ^^ I don't have enough time between my breakfast, coffee and leaving for work. Then later in the evening or if I'm off and can take it mid-afternoon then I'll take it with milk, either flat white or cappuccino usually. The only way to truly taste an espresso anyway is without milk so it's never a bad thing to take it straight too but only if it's quality and fresh beans.
Thanks for these videos! My gf and I will be in the mood for lattes in the morning sometimes, but usually it's either straight-up v60 or espresso for us
If I’m doing filter coffee absolutely no dairy! If it’s an espresso drink though I love using milk, but it’s got to be oat milk (lactose intolerant). On another note, how do you think this grinder compares to the Fellow Ode? Feels like similar price range and since they both excel at filter coffee I’m curious which is best.
For dairy, depends on a few factors: Do I have it in the fridge? What kind of beans am I using? Do I like it black (or at the very least can handle whatever bitterness hits me)? Most of the time I'm buying cheap stuff due to being a student on a budget, so I usually go for something that's cheap but also as light of a roast as possible (if it means taking a medium roast over a dark roast, so be it) - and then if there's dairy in the fridge (or for me, some dairy-free creamer), I use it. If I don't have it in the fridge and if I know I can choke it down black, I take it black. Whenever I do have specialty coffee though, I'm not putting dairy anywhere near it. And as for if I'm getting coffee from someone else, I'm asking for cream and sugar unless I know the person making it is also into specialty coffee.
I love your review of the 2 grinders. Thank you! At this moment I think the ode would be a fantastic addition to my brew bar as I am currently loving pour overs! My random acts of kindness actually happen once a month paying for the order behind us in the drive through. Random acts are always needed throughout the year! Thank you for always doing yours, your reviews are incredibly kind! 💜
Filter coffee always black! But when it comes to espresso I always make a milk drink. My go to is always a cappuccino but I enjoy cortado’s and latte’s every now and then
Great video! I recall that I ordered the 48 mm mini after seeing Joshua Jones video. Your video is spot on! For context, I have a Niche Zero I use for espresso, and my son has a Lagom P64 he uses for espresso, but my daily filter brew has been with a Comandante C40 Mark III. I've seen hacks online trying to add an electric motor to C40, and thought that might be nice, and seeing the mini video, it is how a C40 might be with a motor, yes? Knowing the quality of Option-O, seemed like a no-brainer to order the mini directly from Option-O and it arrived in short time (unlike trying to order a Niche). I only use the mini for filter coffee, and the flavor is very good, and the mini works as seen, grinding in about 30 seconds. Grind looks very uniform. I usually start the mini before adding beans for less stress on the motor and my inverted dosing cup sits nicely on top and I just leave it there during grinding to prevent popcorning. Retention is 0.0g to max 0.1g. And the mini's footprint is so small on your counter, it is hard to think of a "con" about this grinder. I much prefer it to Fellow ODE with its stock burrs. And no dairy here.
My first cup of the day is a 20/300 V60 Switch with half & half and sugar. My usual first coffe is Klatch WBC. My next two cups are always black. Usually light roast single origin.
Having used a manual grinder for the past 2 weeks as I am travelling, 30 seconds sounds like a dream! Planning a move to Oslo where apartments are tiny, the footprint on this also looks like a dream! I grind on the slighty finer side for pour overs, and I am also in the market for a new automatic grinder. I often grind 30-40 grams for 2-3 people (500-750 ml) so there is one question I don't think you answered: what's the capacity on the hopper?
Hi! I don't use dairy, except cow milk sometimes in an Aeropress. Mostly I brew espresso with a 9Barista, so I drink short shots. This grinder looks great!
Wow! I’m so excited! I will probably be buying this one. I’ve been waiting for a solid grinder that can do filter and espresso and looks better than the sette. 48 mil is coming my way soon! Also, I usually don’t add dairy to my drinks. I do like the occasional latte art practice though
spent 3 years in Brazil as a kid (9-12yrs old) started drinking espresso when i was 10 as done locally with heavy cream and cane sugar. Even though i am 54 i still love my espresso this way but I do consider the dairy as my antihero. lol
No dairy in my coffee down here in NYC. Great option, for the only person in the house that drinks coffee. Also would be a great budget pairing with my Gaggia Classic Pro and Asubo pour-over. Love the channel, and my wife says the same to me about the way I talk about coffee. Thanks
I just recently picked up the 1zpresso jx-pro and I actually enjoy the hand grinding aspect (although maybe that will change if I get an espresso machine). Just wanted to say that your production value is great, if RUclips didn't tell me I would have guessed you had hundreds of thousands of subscribers and I'm sure you will if you keep up with the content. Anyways, great video, I'm looking forward to your next. P.S. - a little half and half is my go to in my coffee at the moment 👌
I have a Baratza Encore that I use every day for my Aeropress and Breville Bambino Plus maybe a couple times a month. I've had it for maybe 3 years and it still works great. I saw this Lagom Mini on a Wacaco reel on Instagram and because I'm a sucker for a clean aesthetic and a small footprint, I had to look into it. And I put either half and half or heavy cream in my coffee, because I like my coffee to closely resemble warm melted ice cream....
So glad I stumbled on this video. I’m currently set up with a Baratza Encore but looking to upgrade (mostly filter coffee and a few espresso’s with a flair). One question: how loud is the Lagom? The Encore is loud enough to wake up everyone in my house and I’d love something a little quieter in the mornings. Also, no dairy for me, just coffee and water.
Hi, Keith. Looking forward to your review. Paused the video to tell you I use dairy in my coffee when I don't drink it black. I'm from Dublin in Ireland, btw. Enjoying your enthusaiasm for coffeecand your presentation.
Looking at the website, this thing appears to have a massive charging brick, is that true? The appeal of this grinder is being compact, but now I have to stair at this brick plugged in on my kitchen wall?
I'm looking to upgrade from a hand grinder! This was super useful. And in that vein, I think to people who're moving from hand grinders to electronic ones...30s is nothing. Especially if I'm not the one doing the work.
I was looking for a smaller form factor, as others have commented. However, having checked the Option-O website, they don't appear to ship to the UK, even though they advertise a UK plug. Not your fault, but their website ordering process is a bit limited. I only drink black coffee, but my daughter, who is the only other family member that drinks coffee, only uses Oat Milk, so no dairy here. Great video and I had my hopes up before checking out the provided links
As an utterly amateur coffee drinker (that uses a hand grinder and a moka pot) and lives alone (so I don't drink more than this baby can handle), this will be brilliant for my tiny kitchen. I've been wanting an electric grinder for a while now since the hand grinding is a pain in the a**, but they're all so damn big. I was going to get the Niche once I move to a bigger place, but the Lagom I can get now (well, when it comes back in stock, that is). so glad I accidentally stumbled on your video. I don't drink dairy at all, to be honest. I do occasionally add non-dairy milk, but I generally prefer my coffee just black, with nothing added.
I've been saving toward a niche and a home espresso machine, and I think this video, combined with the Lagom Mini's price point just swayed some of my plans
Well done Kyle, this is your best video yet! And, you were physically not all over the place. Could you please make a video on the the different coarseness settings of the grind for a French press, espresso and a mocha pot using the same grinder. No dairy!
What would you recommend for breve's at home. Only making 2 to 4 shots at a time. Lagom Mini or Niche Zero? I'm torn between the two. My espresso machine is a Nuova simonelli oscar ii. Thank you so much for all the great videos.
I do not use dairy in my coffee. I would be interested in seeing a comparison between this and the Ode. As being a owner of the Ode myself. I would also love to see a SSP or other burr set type video for the Ode. Anyway. Love the content recently. Thank you!!!!
I always enjoy your videos, apart from information, they have very good "photography" as they say Now, as for the fact of "which is the best grinder", as you mention on the video, one must choose based to the drink and roast prefers I use to be a classic conical heavy body espresso drinker, but as the years passed, I realize that I don't like heavy body and I want clear taste with crispy acidity, that's why I have a perfect aligned super jolly that soon will have SSP burrs on it Can't choose between high uniformity or multipurpose, for espresso always
Have been very blessed with the baratza encore for couple of years now. Picked the grinder up 2nd hand for 60 euros and it completely changed my coffee life. I did somehow pair a delonghi icona to it and I had enjoyed espresso brewing for quite a while. After working in a coffee bar and realizing how crippled the workflow was at home compared to how espresso brewing could be I decided that I would wait for something like this to come out and I had the cash to afford a setup that could cover espresso brewing at home done right :) P.s. I love pouring latte and I drink milkdrinks if I have the time but not enough for filter coffees. Espresso for me is to get caffeinated fast or to experience the coffee flavour bomb
Thanks for the review, Kyle. This grinder with 48 mm burrs is tempting. Question: How noisy is it? Per your question: I almost always use cream, both to cut the acid effect of drinking too much coffee (!) and because the fat enhances both flavor and mouth feel. About one teaspoon of REAL cream per 10 ounce cup usually does the trick with reasonably strong coffee (18-20 g in aeropress). Too much cream overwhelms the coffee flavor. Espresso drinks vary, of course.
Loving each of your videos, and this one comes at the perfect time as I am looking for my first home grinder! Mainly brewing espressos, mostly to make lattes but sometimes keeping them black. Using whole milk for lattes. Thank you for the amazing content Kyle! All the best.
Hi Kyle, personally I'm on the quest to get my hands on one of this grinder, I do espresso only for myself on the flair pro2, so my needs are well covered by this, and also do filter coffe in chemex and V60, but by now in the main page of lagom for the 48mm bur set, there is only a waiting list, also the price range look awasome to me.
Use case for me is 45 gm batch for drip and 18 gm espresso most days...currently have a Baratza 270 which is too loud. Would this be a suitable replacement...needs to be quiet, ok at drip and on par or better than 270 for espresso. Would this need a larger dosing cup? Larger capacity hopper (not sure what to call input receptacle)? coffee black
The LIDO series by orphan espresso are hand grinders with 48mm burr set FYI since you mentioned you couldn't find hand grinders with this size burr set. Burrs made by Etzinger.
Because you asked... I have lattes (or latti) in the morning (dairy drink) but for everything else it's black. What's the 1:16 sign in the back? Preferred coffee ratio? Favourite verse?
I am new to the home coffee world and loving it. It’s like I never drank real coffee before. I am on the hunt for an electric grinder (I’ve been using a hand grinder for now) but haven’t been able to find an affordable decent grinder that can do both filter and espresso coffee. But this may be the one grinder to rule them all. Thanks for the review.
No dairy typically. I only use dairy on dark roasts to lighten up the bitterness and open up the cup a bit but I also rarely buy dark roasts haha. I also think that 30 secs is not too much time to grind because thats the amount of time it takes to boil water in my kettle anyway. 30 grams is also a perfect dosing size for me since I don't need more than the two cups that will produce and my size 02 v60 cant brew more than 30g at a time.
I’m forced by my gut to have no dairy in my coffee, but there’s so many good options when it comes to oat, soy and almond milk I feel like it’s no big loss. I also find that a good tasting soy milk really brings a good and interesting flavour to the cup.
Kyle! Awesome review. So well spoken and VERY informative as always. Looks like I made the right decision and I should be expecting mine early 2022. As for the dairy question, depends what I’m drinking. 1% Milk froth for my lattes and one cream in my coffees. Merry Christmas and happy new year my friend!
@@nhayes927 I can definitely let you know my thoughts on it when I get it. I ordered the one with the bigger burr set. I currently have the Breville Barista Express and it doesn’t have a great espresso grinder. This is why I purchased the 48 mm burrs. I also want to start pour overs so I needed something that could do both, well.
@@Alexander-gd1bs the one in the video i posted was with bigger burr set as well. I was going to pull the trigger until i saw the thread on home barista. I dont k ow why they cant put a better motor i it.
@@nhayes927 received it about 2 weeks ago now. I’m so happy with my purchase. It’s so well made and made my espresso taste so much better. No stalling yet. Been grinding espresso beans (dark roast). Might be a different story with a lighter roast? VERY happy with it.
I love dairy in my coffee but during the week I tend towards an Americano to maintain intermittent fasting while still having nice espresso before going to work. Grind time would not be a problem to me given it's designed to catch the grinds in a dosing cup. Currently using an oooold Nuovo Simonelli cafe grinder w/o the dosing chamber (27 years old...from my parents cafe). I have to sit there holding the dosing cup while it grinds. That's more annoying than grind time! I think you asked this somewhere else - scale for dosing coffee, every morning.
no dairy for me. how easy is the dialing between filter and espresso? is it as easy as the Niche or finicky like the Eureka? and how loud is the grinder? as always, nice video!
Kyle, the more I watch your different videos… Could you please consider moving your ”1 : 16“ neon sign a bit to the side - preferably to the left ;-) (1) It would become readable ;-) (2) It would not bounce into this other yellowish lamp light on the right what gives this nice moody light. (3) Would force you to come up with a better (?) solution for your obviously desired _back light_ to detach your talking head from your well chosen black background… I am not even sure that you would need an additional back light at all. I like your latest studio so much better than a year back. You are really good at having focus placed right on _relevant_ parts of your video and it is always a good choice to cut-in detail views of products that are crisp and sharp - as you usually do ;-)
If I am brewing a filter brew, I am drinking it without milk consistently. However, sometimes I drink espresso from my Flair Signature straight, but will often make a lactose free whole milk cortado.
Great video. I look forward to the day when RUclipsrs stop begging their viewers for likes and subscribes. You don’t need to ask. Your content speaks for itself.
No dairy 90% I agree with your points NZ v 48mm mini. I absolutely love my NZ because of the large turn dial. I never have to worry about how many turns to turn back when I switch between brews. Too bad I’ve had my NZ since august and don’t feel I’d want another conical grinder at this point. Can’t wait to see your review on the Eureka single dose tho
Well, I wasn’t in the market for a new filter brew grinder but I might just have to get one of these. Love the compact size and styling! Oh and I’m an non-dairy guy myself. Love the content!
I drink different coffee at different times of the day. I make a few flat whites in the morning, these are usually double luongos with a small amount of 2% milk. I’ve also used Oatley’s barista non dairy milk substitute, but I don’t love the nut flavors added to my coffee. In the later afternoon I occasionally, 3 times a week, make light roast double espresso that I drink with no milk about 2 hours prior to dinner.
@@KyleRowsell thanks for the intriguing and highly informative overview of the Lagom Mini. If this had been available 12 months ago I would have made some diffeeenr choices in my home coffee setup. Since I couldn’t find a home grinder that was good looking and small footprint I opted for a heavily customized super-auto workflow that keeps me happy. I may still get the Lagom Mini for my Aram “lever” espresso maker. Which is what I use for my afternoon double espresso
Help. Mine is broken. Do you know if its repairable? I use it 2 to 3 times a day. Its about 6 months old and i loved it but it locked up. I cleaned it out , took the burr out etc. The motor runs but if you put any pressure on it or put in beans it won't spin. I think its something in the motor and shaft. Please help. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you so much.
Another brilliant review Kyle. Really enjoy your channel. The Lagom Mini is an intriguing product with its slick looks, metal construction and solid performance. Really look forward to your comparison video for all round professional home grinders. Even though the Lagom Mini seems like a solid product….I have my concerns regarding its long term performance especially with what seems to be a slightly underpowered motor. When considering the extra cost of the 48mm burrs, import/customs fees to have it delivered to the UK…I wonder if it would be reasonable to just purchase the tried and tested Niche Zero instead. Eagerly awaiting your comparison video. Keep up the good work!
Hey Joe! Oh this means the world, THANK YOU! A comparison won’t be in the works for a little bit. For now may I suggest looking into the niche? It seems in the UK that it’s a much better value than other parts of the world. Just my 2 cents
C40 comparison? You addressed it briefly around the 4:20 timestamp in the video with the following statement: “while incredibly delicious they aren't delivering the same sweetness or magnifying glass like clarity of cups that I've produced from my C40 and K Plus” I guess we’ll have to continue to wait for someone to create a motorized grinder that can achieve the same sweetness and clarity as the C40 for filtered drip brew coffee, while not costing more than $1k.
New to your channel, but figured I'd comment. Dairy is a recent practice, like a week or two. Mainly for the fun of it or to spice things up. I've been dabbling with a milk frother and various flavors in a cream topping for filter coffee. But only when time permits to play around, not daily.
Not new to coffee, just new to good coffee. My morning brew is usually a pour over. I don’t see myself doing espresso at home. I have the Baratza Encore and I was hoping to move up with the Fellow Ode, but they stumbled out of the gate. Will version 2.0 be any better than 1.0 or 1.1? Is this the grinder 2.0 for me?
I make one or two macchiato's a day with ECM Syncronika, that it. I have the Specialtita, not happy with it. Mini would work with 48mm rt handed, just had rt thumb surgery MINI YES
Having an _ECM Synchronika_ myself, I am very (!) happy with my _Eureka Mignon Single Dose_ ;-) It is an excellent combo at a reasonable price for the grinder, having already spent quite a lot for the _ECM_ .
Depends on dairy, some days yes. Some days just require more velvety smoothness. I’m on the fence between this, the ode and the Df64. I mostly grind for drip coffee in many forms and recipes, my current grinder fails me for recipes like the JH pour over. I would however like a grinder for occasional espresso, my wife prefers milk drinks and her preferences weigh on this choice. I would prefer not to have two grinders, but I’m not barring the idea. I love the style and space efficiency of this little guy, but the df64 seems more robust in its performance. I’m also a avid tinkerer and have no problem modifying things to get the best from them. What are your thoughts. And as always love your content, your upbeat energy is infectious. Also love your shooting space, really dig the dark background and accent lighting on your coffee paraphernalia. Keep up the good work
Hey mike! Thanks for this thoughtful response! The DF is another amazing option. If you have the space and are willing to deal with its quirks it’s not a bad idea. Depending on where you are it will be more expensive than the mini. But the option to get SSP burrs is a huge plus. Really appreciate the kind words. Lots of work went into creating this studio space.
I’m looking to spend less than $400 on a grinder that is capable of both filter coffee and espresso. More filter coffee than espresso. Would you recommend a product like the 48mm burr mini or a manual grinder of commandante, kinu, or 1zpresso caliber? Have been leaning towards the manual grinder.
it works fine, I use the timemore chestnut+ with titanium 38mm burrs and it does well with espresso fine grinds. Sure it will take longer, but it's possible to get good shots out of it.
@@Cenot4ph Nice. I don't mind anything taking a little longer. And I don't make espresso yet, but I want to invest for the time when I do (and then at most, it'll be 2 +/- a day).
My setup is currently a super portable one out of necessity, I've got barely any countertop space to work with :P. I brew espresso with a Flair Signature combined with a hand grinder and a NanoFoamer for the dairy filled fully manual espresso experience. The Lagom Mini catches my eye quite a lot because it's so compact! I bet there's going to be a battery powered version of this waiting to happen for the luxurious camper audience out there
I'm not sure when it is important for me to upgrade the grinder I use; I have a barista express and use that for a couple daily espressos (with oat milk ). This might be the upgrade I want! Thank you
No dairy and I love the sound of this grinder but 20-25g capacity is too small for me. I always do a double v60 at 40g, having to weigh beans twice every time I brew is a little too much for me.

Thanks Simon! I’ll definitely look into it!
LACTOSE HERE! Nice video bro. Great lighting and nice info. Thank you brothaaa!
The best limited space setup is the 48mm Mini and Bambino for starters. More advance users it is the 48mm + Argos. These also make great travel setups. I can’t wait to get my Mini in the mail next month.
Great setup indeed! Any others you’d recommend?!
(no dairy)
Oh man - literally made my day!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks mike! Appreciate the response and thoughts here!
Yeah, and have a great holiday man.
@@mikele7982 I will try!
One-and-one! I love it!
Wonderful video! What many of of us want to see is a comparison between the 48mm-version and the Fellow Ode for filter 🤗
Thank you! Appreciate that!
Every video you make really deserves a BIG LIKE, Kyle. Thanks .
Ah man. Thanks friend. 🙂
Dairy for my wife and I.
Just ordered the 48mm version. Super excited !
On the flip side, am also having a bit of buyers remorse… mainly brew using the mokka pot and have a JX Pro. Not sure what to expect besides a slightly more efficient work flow…
Interesting! May I ask why you pulled the trigger? 😅
@@KyleRowsell It’s looks and my laziness 😅
Well, it also the ease of cleaning and price point.
I want one. I most often use 1/2 & 1/2. This grinder looks perfect for my home use.
You are great at this - keep it up man
I will. 😃 Thank you!
How about we do a comparison video to cover that? 🤔
@@KyleRowsell Please do it!
Wow thank you for this kind and thoughtful response!
Super impressive, Kyle. Keep up the good work. This was definitely my most anticipated review of 2021, and it did not disappoint.
Ah man. Means the WORLD! Thanks for watching
I love the word that you called "Mini Niche" that is a good conclusion.
Thank you for this review. Good job 👏🏻
Glad you would agree!
Make almost exclusively espresso. No milk. I do enjoy milk drinks but just love my daily espresso routine. Great review. Very thorough
No dairy for me, except maybe one Saturday a month I’ll make a faux cortado with my aeropress. Keep up the exceptional content, Kyle!
My first cup of the day is a 20/300 V60 Switch with half & half and sugar. My usual first coffe is Klatch WBC. My next two cups are always black. Usually light roast single origin.
Thanks for sharing
Having used a manual grinder for the past 2 weeks as I am travelling, 30 seconds sounds like a dream! Planning a move to Oslo where apartments are tiny, the footprint on this also looks like a dream!
I grind on the slighty finer side for pour overs, and I am also in the market for a new automatic grinder. I often grind 30-40 grams for 2-3 people (500-750 ml) so there is one question I don't think you answered: what's the capacity on the hopper?
Great video bud! Exciting to hear your enthusiasm about this little firecracker of a grinder 🔥
Thank you Josh! And thank you for lending me this 38mm for testing. Much appreciated 🎉
Hey Kyle. Very insightful video. Glad you liked the mini. It's little capable grinder. I personally drink my coffee without dairy almost all the time
Thanks for watching as always Arian!
spent 3 years in Brazil as a kid (9-12yrs old) started drinking espresso when i was 10 as done locally with heavy cream and cane sugar.
Hey! That was my reel. Glad you found the channel! All the best!
Hi Mary! I’m Kyle, not Keith… but really appreciate the kind comment! All the best
Looking at the website, this thing appears to have a massive charging brick, is that true? The appeal of this grinder is being compact, but now I have to stair at this brick plugged in on my kitchen wall?
This is true
I'm looking to upgrade from a hand grinder! This was super useful. And in that vein, I think to people who're moving from hand grinders to electronic ones...30s is nothing. Especially if I'm not the one doing the work.
I drink mostly natural Ethiopian coffee so I don't put dairy in it. Thanks for the review!
Love to hear it
Both, Love my latte in the morning and then a pour over later in the day without any dairy.
What’s the sound level like when it’s grinding? This grinder has me intrigued. No dairy for us, but will make the occasional oat milk cappuccino.
Fairly quiet. They updated the motor
Lance Hedrick did just such a video.
I always enjoy your videos, apart from information, they have very good "photography" as they say
Now, as for the fact of "which is the best grinder", as you mention on the video, one must choose based to the drink and roast prefers
I use to be a classic conical heavy body espresso drinker, but as the years passed, I realize that I don't like heavy body and I want clear taste with crispy acidity, that's why I have a perfect aligned super jolly that soon will have SSP burrs on it
Can't choose between high uniformity or multipurpose, for espresso always
Have been very blessed with the baratza encore for couple of years now. Picked the grinder up 2nd hand for 60 euros and it completely changed my coffee life. I did somehow pair a delonghi icona to it and I had enjoyed espresso brewing for quite a while. After working in a coffee bar and realizing how crippled the workflow was at home compared to how espresso brewing could be I decided that I would wait for something like this to come out and I had the cash to afford a setup that could cover espresso brewing at home done right :)
They’ve updated it with a new silent motor. No issues with sound
Unfortunately videos like these don’t help with supply 😅 hopefully you’re able to get one soon!
@@KyleRowsell I signed up to be notified when they were in stock and bought as soon as they were.
That’s not what I said, I said I couldn’t find the exact burr set from the 48mm version in a hand grinder 😁
Welcome! Hopefully this fits your needs!
Great Vid! Awesome being able stay up to date on the latest gear! Always black
Thanks for watching!
I’m forced by my gut to have no dairy in my coffee, but there’s so many good options when it comes to oat, soy and almond milk I feel like it’s no big loss.
I also find that a good tasting soy milk really brings a good and interesting flavour to the cup.
LOVE THE SIZE and look... I hope to get my hand one on sooN! thanks for the info
But the 38mm are not the ones in the Comandante, right? I do use milk in my coffee, but meanwhile I don't have a good home espresso option yet.
The real treat of the mini is the size. Grinders are just too crazy big… this one is perfect
Agreed!
Thank you Alexander! I hope you enjoy it!
Did you buy this for espresso? If so can post your thoughts somewhere?
Thanks Kyle!
Filter coffee is always black, but lately I’ve been enjoying Oat Milk Lattes and Almond Milk Caps.
My pleasure! And oh Betsy, sounds delicious!
no dairy for me.
how easy is the dialing between filter and espresso? is it as easy as the Niche or finicky like the Eureka?
and how loud is the grinder?
as always, nice video!
I talked about this in the second half of the video. It’s easy - but larger notches make espresso a little more finicky
Kyle, the more I watch your different videos… Could you please consider moving your ”1 : 16“ neon sign a bit to the side - preferably to the left ;-)
(1) It would become readable ;-)
(2) It would not bounce into this other yellowish lamp light on the right what gives this nice moody light.
(3) Would force you to come up with a better (?) solution for your obviously desired _back light_ to detach your talking head from your well chosen black background…
I am not even sure that you would need an additional back light at all.
No dairy 90%
I agree with your points NZ v 48mm mini. I absolutely love my NZ because of the large turn dial. I never have to worry about how many turns to turn back when I switch between brews. Too bad I’ve had my NZ since august and don’t feel I’d want another conical grinder at this point. Can’t wait to see your review on the Eureka single dose tho
The niche is 🔥 but this is a great alternative
Well, I wasn’t in the market for a new filter brew grinder but I might just have to get one of these. Love the compact size and styling! Oh and I’m an non-dairy guy myself. Love the content!
Thanks for the comment Andrew!
Great review. Thanks. What's the rpm on the 48mm mini?
So stoked for my 48mm Lagom Mini to arrive! Going to make a bunch of V60s and some yummy milk drinks from the Appartamento.
Enjoy!
Thanks for sharing Jeff!
Isn't the 1zpresso j-max a hand grinder with a 48mm burr?
You addressed it briefly around the 4:20 timestamp in the video with the following statement:
“while incredibly delicious they aren't delivering the same sweetness or magnifying glass like clarity of cups that I've produced from my C40 and K Plus”
I guess we’ll have to continue to wait for someone to create a motorized grinder that can achieve the same sweetness and clarity as the C40 for filtered drip brew coffee, while not costing more than $1k.
New to your channel, but figured I'd comment.
Dairy is a recent practice, like a week or two. Mainly for the fun of it or to spice things up. I've been dabbling with a milk frother and various flavors in a cream topping for filter coffee. But only when time permits to play around, not daily.
Thanks for commenting William! And welcome!
Great video! How loud is it? Many people might not mind how long it takes to grind if it's fairly quiet.
Just bought Niche Zero. Waiting for delivery.
Manual grinding is always the better value. But the 48mm is a great option if you’d like an electric grinder that does both
What's the difference between the 48mm "Obsydian" and the "Moonshine" burrs?
I’ve done a video on this on my recent review
Love this and love the compactness. Thanks for explaining *why* the 38mm isn't so good for espresso. Thanks!
My pleasure
it works fine, I use the timemore chestnut+ with titanium 38mm burrs and it does well with espresso fine grinds. Sure it will take longer, but it's possible to get good shots out of it.
@@Cenot4ph Nice. I don't mind anything taking a little longer. And I don't make espresso yet, but I want to invest for the time when I do (and then at most, it'll be 2 +/- a day).
@@jodyweima606 i drink two a day as a rule. It takes me probably at most 1 minute to grind 18 grams manually each time give or take
My setup is currently a super portable one out of necessity, I've got barely any countertop space to work with :P. I brew espresso with a Flair Signature combined with a hand grinder and a NanoFoamer for the dairy filled fully manual espresso experience. The Lagom Mini catches my eye quite a lot because it's so compact! I bet there's going to be a battery powered version of this waiting to happen for the luxurious camper audience out there
I'd think the motor would have an easier time grinding for espresso with the 38mm burrs due to needing less torque?
I'm not sure when it is important for me to upgrade the grinder I use; I have a barista express and use that for a couple daily espressos (with oat milk ). This might be the upgrade I want! Thank you
No dairy and I love the sound of this grinder but 20-25g capacity is too small for me. I always do a double v60 at 40g, having to weigh beans twice every time I brew is a little too much for me.
How does it compare to an SSP upgraded ODE for filter brews?
Why don’t we make a little comparison video about it?
@@KyleRowsell That would be the best!!!
