Before you screw in the new flow turbine get a scotch pad and thoroughly clean out the turbine housing
Also smear some silicon grease around the O ring before you screw in
Hi Dan
Great video very clearly explained. I’ve got a Main eco 30 and have been suffering only warm water through the hot tap for a couple of months, I’ve changed the diverter valve and the heat exchanger but they didn’t help and was thinking of getting in a gas engineer when I saw this video and thought it was worth a try replacing flow sensor/restrictor £12.40. Now I’ve got piping hot water. Thanks .
Glad the video helped 👍🏻👍🏻
Yoir storey is loke ours however Mrs gave up on me and getting a new 1 but got hot water amd heating again but only by doing as I done before via resetting for hot water ....I'll put money on it being same as your issue
You're so handy man learn a lot from your videos keep it up
Thank you that means alot 😁😁😁
Are it can cause hot water issues from tap ?? Before few days i noticed some weird sound from like bearings screaming and now when i open a hot water sometimes have hit water sometimes not have just go cold water and not burning lite on on boiler also is delay sometimes burning light on
Hi Dan. Great instruction.
I have the E5 error code. I have hot water from the taps BUT no central heating at all
Please can you advise?
Where do you buy 18.5mm spanners, or is one those old 3/4 inch spanners
Great video. I've got a new flow turbo on order. I was going to clean out the silver box at the back but when I loosened it water started gushing out. Do I need to drain down the tank and if so how.
Geoff
Hi Geoff little confused, the silver plate at the back is the plate heat exchanger on a combi. Does it have a hot water tank in the property at all, it shouldn't if it's a combi boiler it's hot water on demand.
If you have isolated the boiler and drained off the Nipple then the only water will be in boiler so get a bucket and towel and let it drain down then remove the exchanger to flush out. 👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻
@@PlumbingGy
Hi Dan on your video replacing the turbine flow valve you mention removing that silver bit behind the valve housing undoing the 2 Allen bolts taking it out and giving it a flush. I undid one of the Allen bolts but water came out under pressure. I'd isolated the house cold supply.
@@PlumbingGy hi Dan just read the whole of your reply I get it now I'll drain down the boiler. One thing I remember the engineer last time put pressure in to the tank on the righthand side with the valve on it. Would I have to repressurise this?
Geoff Allen oh I see you mean inside the expansion vessel, that would mean that the vessel may have lost pressure it is a common issue but I would too up the system pressure and test the test nipple at the top of the vessel with a flat head of it spews out water it's failed and will need replacing.
Run a test on the boiler after you have ran the hot water and vented all taps then run the central heating to make sure the pressure doesn't rise above 3bar and everywhere gets hot 👍🏻
Hi dan
It's the heat exchanger at the back you mentioned it in your video taking it out and giving it a shake and rinse. When I removed the screw on the right water started pouring out. Will I need to drain the boiler and if so how. It's the same model as the one in the video.
Geoff
hi dan i have finished the job it all went to plan following your instructions and video, much appreciated just one question my hot water is now a lot hotter does this indicate it was the turbine at fault the old one looks ok just covered in grime and the light on the sensor now stays red without blinking thanks again .
It would be difficult for me to say Justin without looking, have u changed the turbine or cleaned the plate heat exchanger?
Glad it’s sorted out though 👌🏻
Do It All Dan I’ve changed the turbine thanks to your video I’ve fixed it for £39 also how much water should I put in the symphony trap I’ve cleaned it all out and filled but I can always empty some tomorrow have you done any videos on cleaning the plate heat exchanger or the main heat exchanger?
No problem Justin, I do quick explain how to remove the plate heat exchanger in the video and you can wash and shake after u remove in the sink with warm water.
The trap just fill it enough so it seals from the boiler so around 3 1/4 👌🏻
M8 where did you get an 18.5mm spanner from when you put in the new brass turbine.
Use a adjustable spanner or a pair of small grips 👌🏼
I'm sure this video will come in handy someday! I'm not that handy but have used YT videos to help me fix some stuff in the past.
You never know! Thanks for the comment guys. 💯
Thank you so much for this Tutorial and would be possible for you to make another video on how to change the pump Air vent for same model ideal logic please , As this is a bit hard to dissemble those part ,The way you do your tutorial is the best 5 star Thank you again
Sha riff thank you, I'm happy to help. I will make a video on what you have suggested as soon as one comes up. Which hopefully won't be too long as these are very common in my area.
Thank again
Mate this needs doing on my boiler. Im 18. I've showed my mum this video. It looks like such an easy fix. Turn off some stuff so nothing is running through the boiler. Undo a part. Put a new part in. Bosh done.
She's telling me it's really dangerous and that I'll cause a gas explosion. It's literally a water part I'm taking out. Is this safe to do and could anything possibly go wrong?
It isn’t legal for you to take the case off unfortunately without being gas safe, this maybe an easy fix and on the water side but I’m going to have to side with your mum Edward and say no don’t touch it please mate.
Keep safe 👍🏻
Great job just wondering how old this boiler is aprox. We are prob buying the new heat only version ,any worried there for me .
This boiler is at a guess 8-12 years old, I am not sure as it was a while ago now 😂. No worries at all there if that is the boiler you need for your system a heat only one is perfectly fine. Just be sure to do the usual flushing and cleaning prior and post install, and add inhibitor to keep the system nice and healthy.
Thanks Peter
@@PlumbingGy Many thanks mate all good info ,i will make sure this is done,
Hi dan
Any advise on electrocution and explosions or just in general messing with dangerous riddor reportable events
Looking forward to fire breathing video
Thanks
Yeah don't do them 😂
Dan any tips for getting one of these out when they don't seam to want to move ? I've used grips and a hammer but its not coming out
They can become very stiff I wouldn't spray any lubricant on them, however a lockable large pair of grips SHOULD do the trick 👍🏻
@@PlumbingGy thanks fir the tip I got a 10inch mole grip with Alan key tightening think that helped to get a solid grip then hit it with a hammer job done
Would this cause F4 fault flow thermostat?
What with different colours regulators
Hiu dan , my logic is okay on central heating so that seems to say suggest is no problem with the boiler . However on hot water it will reach 54 and then say pump overrun . I take it this is what you mean by 'intermittent hot water '??
john kendall Hi john, thanks for your comment. What I meant when I referred to intermittent hot water is when the hot tap is running and the water is getting warm then all of a sudden goes cold and this keeps happening intermittently (warm, cold, warm, cold and so on). With your boiler it's very hard for me to diagnose when I can't take a look but it could be a few things, It sounds like the boiler is calling for heat or water so I would make sure your stats are down (possible faulty) make sure you have pressure in your boiler via the gauge, if it's happening quite regular possible diverter valve fault or if there's a motorized valve on the system is check that also.
As you can see it's very hard to say if I can't take a look but I hope this helps in any way.
Thanks again John
cheers Dan . ill change the flow valve anyhow .Any vids on the diverter valve by any chance ??? if it all goes pear shaped no worries all my fault . Thanks again buddy ;-)
john kendall no worries John, the diverters can be tricky if your not used to them just take your time and you'll be fine they are difficult just awkward haha. Thanks again John and good luck
Do It All Dan Hi Dan , this morning as soon as i put hot tap on i got nothing at all . boiler didnt even fire up . only when i reset it did it fire up and then it went straight to 'pump overrun'. Does that tell you anything specific by any chance ??
Do It All Dan i also have a flashing red on the sensor on top of the flow valve . Does this indicate it is not opening enough ??
Hi dan I did this and it worked so thanks, however since I done it the monoxides alarm has been going off, is it related or is it burning off the newness?
bob bob I would get it checked over by an engineer bob, thanks for the support
Did you get it checked, I hope to god you're still alive. Did you refill the condensate drain. You probably had waste products of combustion (pocs) coming out through the u trap. It should have filled up by now though.
You talked about draining the boiler, would be great if you could explain how that is done?
In the video I show the drain nipple underneath, turn this with a large flat head and it will drain in to a bucket 👍🏻
@@PlumbingGy Fantastic thanks! that's tonight's job then. Do I need to turn any of the taps first to isolate CH or HW?
No just isolate under the boiler on each valve as I show and you will be able to do it 👍🏻
Hi have you ever done diverter valve cartridge changed on ideal logic combi?if yes which tool is ideal??
TIA
I have in the past but no videos I'm afraid, the only tools I use are grips, spanners, screwdrivers and Allen keys. I cannot remember what's holding it in place but usually these tools get the job done.
hi do you have to drain the central heating before this or just switch everything off turn mains water off at the boiler and open lowest hot tap is there anything else you need to drain on the boiler ?
To make it safe isolate the boiler underneath and drain from drain point again underneath one drained it is safe to work on 👌🏻
Cheers dan which one is the drain under the boiler I’m thinking I don’t have to drain the whole heating system? Great video
justin newton I’m not sure which boiler u are working on is it the same as video? If so you will have a black nipple underneath on the right hand side you have to gently unscrew and the water will release and drain what is inside the boiler make sure u have a bucket handy of course.
No u do not need to drain the heating system just isolate the on the compression valves under the boiler with a flat head driver. 👌🏻 hope this helps
Do It All Dan hi dan it’s a logic combi 30 I’ve closed the tap on the boiler for water coming in and now no water comes through the hot taps I’ve found the drain nipple under the boiler how do I actually drain it?
@@justinnewton9679 when I turn on the hot water taps I still have water coming out.....so does this mean I have not drained the water out...
watched the video got the new part but the old part will not move seized put it back together ,intend to file 2 edges down so a spanner will fit if this fails i will resort to the sledge hammer
Use grips to loosen, should be out in no time.
Hi Dan, very good video. Just one question. My Ideal Logic 30 is about 6 or 7 years old. It had a new primary heat exchanger a couple of months ago and since then the hot water temperature has been low at the taps, 40 DegC. You can bring it up by shutting in the tap, but it gives a really slow flow rate. I assume this boiler modulates on the flow turbine hall effect switch outputs? Since the temperature of the hot water remains steady, do you think it's most likely to be the flow turbine or fouled plate heat exchanger?
I would b more inclined to suggest the sensor, very easy to catch when carrying out works 👍🏻
Hi Dan, I have an Ideal Logic Combi 24 and the heating is fine but the water is only luke warm from the hot taps. It doesn't fluctuate but just stays luke warm (slightly warmer in the kitchen where the boiler is situated but colder in the bathroom which is further away). I've tried with the heating on and off but no change. I had a plumber take a look and said it would need a new heat exchanger or diverter valve and recommended changing both at the same time so would be about £400 as said it could be either and would be false economy to change just one at a time! I've read elsewhere it could be a thermistor sensor which is a lot cheaper and would prefer them to try that first. Any ideas please?
Hi mark, always a difficult one as I haven't seen it myself. With what your saying it definitely could be one of the three ( thermostat, heat exchanger, the diaphragm in the diverter ) in all fairness the plumber should have been able to diagnose whilst there of course this depends on the condition of the parts. I would have recommended taking out the plate heat exchanger and doing a manual flush on visit that would have helped eliminate that and what I would have done, also tested the functionality of the diverter and clean the cartridge whilst there again would have helped with indication to which it may be. I would swing more to thermostat being faulty if there is no fluctuation in water temperature or pressure but this is only an educated guess as I haven't seen.
Many thank hope this helps.
@@PlumbingGy thank you for the quick reply.
sorted my problem thanks very much
No problem thank you for watching I hope I can help again 👌🏼
Nice one 👍🏽
Hi there Dan, I have a weird issue on my ideal logic. When I use hot water in the bathroom the boiler makes a tapping sound, when I took the boiler cover off I could see the flow sensor light was flashing and the noise seemed to be coming from this part or the turbine. But when I use hot water in the kitchen this noise never happens, what do you think the issue might actually be? Pressure seems ok up and downstairs and water get hot too.
That's very odd it shouldn't make a difference which tap you use however just to be on the safe side I would get it looked at it's pretty hard to diagnose without actually seeing it 👍🏻
@@PlumbingGy yeh it's been driving me mad as I'm.still getting hot water ok . I'll get someone to take a look. Thanks
Hi Dan, how long do flow turbines last before acting up. i replaced mine about 3 years ago but sometimes you can run quite a lot of water off before it gets hot enough to wash the pots.Cheers
it honestly depends, parts can go almost immediately. let somebody take a look 👍
@@PlumbingGy Hi Dan, i repair my own boiler as im quite knowlegable, i just wondered if you had replaced any after a short time?
Hi dan I need this done on my boiler and the plumber has said I need a new boiler instead does that sound right he said the part is £450
You need a new plumber, this part is about 15-20£ 👍🏻
@@PlumbingGy than you dan
Is this the part that is affecting the heat of flow from my bath tap or something else as all the other taps in the house have hot water but my bath hot tap has to run slow in order for it to be hot???
Hmmm I’m not too sure without looking if the flow seems restricted it may be down to a washer or debris, maybe an air lock in the system.
If the Tao works fine but not getting hot when at full bore it could be a factor another could be the plate heat exchanger could be shaled up and need cleaning, maybe replacing
Hope this helps
do it all dan
cheers for you response
i cleared the sump underneath by removing the plastic cap that you unscrew and alot ofr debris was in it but no change
It does sound like it is definitely in need of a service to check over 👍🏻
how much does solving this particular fault costs excluding parts and VAT? assume call out to diagnose and then return to replace the flow turbine and its sensor. thanks
Would depend on an individual engineers callout charge mine would be £80-£120 to diagnose etc
Return to repair with new parts £150-200
@@PlumbingGy would that be a minimum £80 + £150 ? Or £150 all in ?
Hi Mac, it really would depend on area and engineer but £150 is reasonable a little low for myself but definitely in the ballpark
How do u drain the boiler before u change the flow turbine.
It's shown on the video, isolate and drain plug 👍🏻
Hi Dan ...Damsel in distress here!!!! ive got the replacement part mentioned....valves off.. gas isolated.. but the damn thing wont budge...I've got a good grip on it with a spanner ..to the left ...then even tugging to the right in desperation......nothing...it wont move t.. could it be that perhaps that I havent drained the boiler enough or is it just corroded like the rest of the boiler ...God help me... you make it look so easy lol
Hi hun, more than likely stuck solid u may need to try using lubricants to free the turbine, also if you have a stubby hammer just very lightly tap around the edge it may free it that way. Once they are seized it’s very difficult to manipulate out. Hope u manage it after this thank you 💛
To add to this - it took the force of arnold swarzenneger to get mine out we nearly pulled the boiler off the wall however next time we put part in used plenty of white tape!!
Good one
A Gas enginner arranged to fix my intermitting waterflow ..he didnt turn up so i looked at this video Boom saved my self prob £80 or more? boom ! Thanks
You shouldn't be taking a boiler case off unless qualified let alone working on a boiler.
@@omarabdalla1473hope they did their 26.9 checks after removing the case
My daughers bath hot tap has started running cold, but all other taps working fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bob
Hi Bob is all the other taps running absolutely fine no problems? And it's only the bath hot tap?
Of so I would consider looking for another solution, is the bath hot tap on a mixer unit? Maybe that is at fault.
If the problem is only with the bath tap I wouldn't say it was anything to do with the turbine or heat exchanger.
What is the bath tap pressure like? Running normally just cold?
Thanks
@@PlumbingGy Hi Dan, thanks for getting back to me so soon ! All the other taps in the house are fine, I asked my daughter to run the basin unit till it was hot, then turn off and when she tried hot tap on bath again, it started to run luke warm, but went cold again. And yes she just said its on a mixer unit. Appreciate your time...Bob
No problem bob, I would suggest taking a look at the mixer it may need adjusting or could have failed and need a new one installing. I have no doubt that will be the issue, thanks Bob 👌🏻
Also she just sent vid of mixer hot tap running and plenty of pressure
Maybe the aerator needs cleaning ? Changing it. The house is about 7/8 years old
What was the reason you changed the flow turbine
Intermittent hot and cold 👍🏻
Hi Dan, what do you mean when you say vent your taps please can you explain or make a video in regards to this. Thank you in advance
All as I mean by vent the taps are turn the hot on full and flush out all the air, the taps will splutter slightly. On a combi boiler this is very minimal if any air at all but good practice.
Hope this helps
Thank you for the reply going to attempt this in a couple of days still doing some research into it all. Do I need to drain the boiler ? Isolate the water etc
Yeah u would be ok with the video, I mention to isolate the supplies and drain from the boiler hope all goes well 👌🏼
❤ thankyou
Hi dan just did one this morning it was bloody well tight would not move soaked it in wd40 still would move put bar on it and it snapped off half way threaded part still lodged in body need to order new body as would not come out
Hi Peter, that’s nasty! Sometimes you get these though and unfortunately it sounds like yours didn’t end well either. On the upside at least you’re getting a whole new body and a new part LOL good effort though 👍🏻
Good vid..can you explain venting the taps
Opening them up to purge air 👍🏻
Hi Dan. In what situations would you change the flow turbine? How would you know its faulty what would you be looking for. Thanks
The major tell tale sign would be intermittent hot water, fast fluctuations of hot and cold bursts 👌🏻
@@PlumbingGy thanks for getting back to me
abdul hafiz no problem, just be cautious before you order a flow turbine make sure there is no debris in the plate heat exchanger at the back as it give similar effects but not the same if it's a grey area for you it can be difficult to diagnose. What I will say is remove the plate heat exchanger after you have isolated and drained the boiler by un screwing the Allen bolts and give it a rinse out and a few shakes to remove any shale then re install and test 👌🏻🤞🏻
@@PlumbingGy yes will do. Thanks. I'm trying to get out of installation and getting into boiler breakdown, but there's so much to learn! Your vids are a big help
abdul hafiz no worries, feel free to ask away at any point and I will get back to you as soon as I can 👌🏻
I have replaced mine about two years ago and it has gone again with a part from Wolsley … can anyone recommend a genuine good part please? Thanks
By direct but it probably Hasn’t gone because of a faulty part what is your system like how dirty is it
I've been complaining to my landlord for a year about hot water issues and now it's finally given up completely. I can order the turbine and have it fitted by tomorrow but legally I'm not supposed to. I work on my motorbike so I'm mechanically minded enough.
i have the similar issue. Could you please let me know if this fixes your hot water problem after replacing. thank you very much in advance
@@gurituna Take the front cover off the boiler and run the hot water. There's an LED on top of the turbine that should be solid red if it's working. If you see it flickering like in my case the turbine is sticking. I'm still waiting for delivery of the new turbine (£12 on Ebay) but I'll let you know if it fixes the issue.
@@6Twisted many thanks it is a big help. mine should be a different fault. the red light is on constantly during the how water is running. there is little warm at the beginning then cold water coming and no hot water at all :(
@@gurituna Sorry for the late reply, RUclips didn't notify me of your reply. I can confirm changing the turbine fixed the hot water in my case. Is your boiler changing to mode D when you run the hot water? If it is changing to mode D and your heating still works my guess would be the diverter valve.
Is that heat exchange upside down or the boiler 😅
Reading through the vid I can do it, just wanted to check if any other problem ?
You should use spanner
Thanks for the vid. I can’t unscrew mine. Tried a wrench but can’t get a tight enough grip. Will have to buy a pair of grips. I just hope this is the problem after trying this. When I turn the boiler back on, I do get hot water for a few mins. The display shows P. But then goes back to 0 and it goes cold. Sound like the turbine? Thanks again bud :-)
mrjaffa1013 mrjaffa1013 hi, I would more than likely say it was the turbine. If in the meantime you can remove the plate heat exchanger and wash it out that may help. Inside the plate heat exchanger there are very thin fins that can collect bits that restrict the flow. If you decide to do this just run water through it and put your thumbs over the holes and shake for a few seconds do this a few times 😁hope this helps thanks
Thanks for the quick reply! I may give that a go too, was just a bit concerned going that far as my only knowledge on all this is from a few RUclips videos, so I probably should be paying for someone to come out. But, I’ve turned all the electrics off, turned the gas tap (yellow) off just not sure if I’m suppose to drain the boiler or turn one of the other taps off. If you were in my area I’d give you the business 👍😜
mrjaffa1013 haha I appreciate that, just make sure you isolate all the taps below including the flow and return for heating then you definitely know there's no water coming back into the boiler (as I'm not there I can only give advice haha). Then drain the boiler out of the boiler drain nipple on the bottom of boiler it may be near the return valve. If your unsure check specs online for your boiler, once drained disconnect the plate heat exchanger by two Alan key screws holding it in place. You may need a small towel to mop up any small amounts of water. Then just wash it out and re connect 😁 hope that helps
Do It All Dan it’s the exact same model as in the vid, logic 35. I laughed when you mentioned how someone had already tried to repair that one as it looked shredded, mine looks exactly like that now! Cheers Dan.
mrjaffa1013 hahahaa thanks for the support I appreciate it 😁👌🏼
Why do people place the electrics directly under the boiler! Water will leak onto them at some point
@@gregorydavison3421 yup
Is your thumb ok
It is now
I can't find a 18.5mm spanner or socket anywhere!!
Changed flow Turbine today with a pair of Grips!
Not the best of ways really
Not really Andy haha but at least u have done it 👍🏻
👍👍👍
what happens if you dont vent the taps asking in the name of science
I don't understand, they will vent when you use them either way 👍🏻
Really shouldn't be showing people how to do this. People should even be taking the front cover off let along working on the boiler.
The video has a disclaimer, and for use for trained individuals
Surprisingly not illegal tho 😉
No and there's no reason it would be illegal to show if that was the case then I'm sure many national TV production companies wouldl be locked up 😂
@@PlumbingGy in other news. Thanks for posting this. Spot on. However mines so damn seized in I’ve elected to farm it out. Win some lose some lol.
😂😂😂😂
