  • As someone who loves action and constantly needs to be entertained by gory details, this book is my absolute LEAST favourite in the entire Iliad. But alas, I'm doing a series and therefore it has to be included. I will not pretend to enjoy this 1,000 line chapter just because I love the Iliad. The funeral games truly suck.

I personally find it is a rather interesting (in terms of variety and intensity of the events covered), and insightful (in terms of the ideal of mourning, honor, prize and reward not just on the outcome but on the what and how) book! It is also a transition of Achilles rage into compassion and mutual understanding that we are going to see in the last Book.😊

I do agree about Achilles’ switch from rage to compassion in this book is a lovely change of pace for the last little bit of the Iliad

How in the world are the historians think they can even be considered as 'just' friends after reading this shit
And as much as I loved The song of Achilles I do agree with you that Patroclus's character feels so foriegn in that book compared with the Iliad

This was such a painful chapter to get through... Worse than the catalogue of ships, and so ill-timed too. Ffs, one of the main characters just died, Homer. No one cares about the Greeks playing Mario Kart 💀

17:21 - Two talents of gold?! Think of how much just one talent of *silver* was worth. I wonder why it was only fourth prize.
Athena didn't always help Odysseus all that much. Where was she when all his crew were slaughtered or for the seven years Calypso held him prisoner?

Odysseus actually asks Athena that in the Odyssey, I think Book 13, and she replies that she always wanted to help him but for a long time she could not to avoid upsetting her uncle Poseidon, a very powerful god, who was angry with Odysseus for blinding his son the Cyclops.

I didn't think it was boring :) It gives some variety towards the end and a chance to see the heroes in a more easy going situation. When I read it I was also interested in how they will match up against one another. We haven't met the other heroes for a while, especially Diomedes so it was cool to see him. Odysseus as well. So for me it was nice :) When will you make a video about Tiresias? All the best.

sacrificing dogs and horses what a waste. Was not boring at all hearing about battles all the time makes me wonder if this was the Pokemon version. Fumeral games were an important part of Ancient Greek culture it seems. So it is important they are told about also.

Hi Erica, I watched most of your summaries and completed my own reading of the book. Thank you for your hard work.
With lots of respect, I think you've missed the point of book 23. The purpose of the funeral games is hinted at during the beginning of book 24: Achilles longs for Patroclus' manhood. Here, Homer is not talking about a romantic or sexual "manhood", because Homer explicitly states that what Achilles longs for is being in battle with Patroclus and watching him fight.
Our understanding of modern day soldiers show us that combat experience creates an extremely powerful bond between men.
If you re-read book 23 in this light (rembering that the book breaks are a later arbitrary invention)... then you'll see that Homer is using the funeral games to build tension in the advancing narrative of Achilles' rage. The funeral games are Achilles' one last attempt to connect with Patroclus by observing his greatest warrior companions show off their manhood. This is basically Achilles one last grasp at honoring Patroclus before he finally lets go in his sobbing with Priam, at which point his struggle is complete.
I think the arbitrary book break and the distraction of "romantic" love may have caused you to miss the excellence of Homer's skill in building tension toward the final moment of letting go.
The entire book focuses on Achilles' rage and his struggle, and I loved Book 23 as it edges us right up to the final completion of this journey.
Maybe you can go back through and see it in this light. I wonder if you might have a new experience and might join me in my enthusiasm for book 23. I don't think Homer put a boring funeral in his story on accident. I think Homer (if there was a Homer) had a very clear purpose for putting the funeral games at one of the most pivotal moments of the story.
thanks for considering, and thanks again for all the videos!
