  • We have Gopher Tortoises all over the area we live, but for some reason we never see the little ones. I finally came across a very small gopher this afternoon and felt compelled to share. As you may have figured out it does not take a lot to keep me entertained.

It's a baby.....my ma raised a bunch of them. She collected the eggs and kept them warm in a shoebox over the pilot light on the stove. Pretty soon we had a bunch of babies. Cool little fellers.

That poor baby is struggling to breathe and is quite possibly sick with a respiratory infection. Breaks my heart to see it struggle so. I have lovely little gopher tortoises on my property as well and they are quite zippy little creatures for how much weight they carry around compared to their size. Hopefully, this little one will recover.

It's doing fine. I disturbed him with his mouth full of grass and his struggling to get away made him appear to be sick.

😅😅😅 I actually didn't know that there was different types of tortoises. The pattern on yours is so perfect, so symmetrical. I see a lot of tortoises ofter, I guess they aren't "Gofer "

Gopher tortoises are endangered and I believe there's fines for messing with them! I'd contact DNR or the turtle conservatory of SC I believe they're called. Just be careful friend, I love all animals but especially reptiles!!

They are not under the Endangered Species Act in SC, FL, GA, AL but there are regulations in place for protecting them from harvesting, keeping as pets and relocating.

You don't handle it like you "love all God's critters"! Have a little more compassion with it.
