HAWAII BIG ISLAND! Volcanoes National Park and Punalu'u BLACK SAND BEACH!! (NCL Pride of America)

- Wow! This cruise is going by so fast! We are already visiting our third Hawaiian Island which is the big island of Hawaii. Today we are porting in Hilo and have plans to see a volcano and a black sand beach!
We taxi over to the airport to get our rental car... which was sooo much easier than in Maui! And they surprised us with an upgrade to a sports car!! Off to the volcano!! We arrive at Volcanoes National Park and go to the visitor's center to get the lay of the land. In speaking to a park ranger, she tells us that we won't see any red lava during the day, you really have to come at night to see this. But we can experience everything else. There are some amazing lookouts over the crater where you can see the constant smoke AND we were able to walk through the lava tubes! Pretty cool!
Then we are on the hunt for black sand! We drive about 40 minutes south to Punalu'u Black Sand Beach... and just WOW! This is like nothing we have ever seen before! It is beautiful... and hot! I mean it is volcanic after all...
On the way back, we grab some lunch and then have to find a waterfall before heading back to the ship... Akaka Falls was a beautiful waterfall to see... and a much shorter hike than the one on Oahu!! Such a fun day!

My late husband and I celebrated our 25th in Hawaii also in 1995. We went to Maui and then spent a few days on the island of Lanai. Blessings to you both and God bless. You are wonderful examples to your children.
Your reaction to the black sand reminds me of my first time in New Orleans for Jazz Festival and my amazement at the red dirt. In western Washington State dirt is brown.
Oh I so loved this one too! Everything looks so lush and green! The food at the diner looked awesome but that milkshake was the bomb! I loved the close ups of the black sand running through your fingers! I was there once a long time ago! You helped bring back those memories! Thanks for mentioning the gas prices as I was curious! Hawaii has always been expensive and you really have to plan for this kind of vacation adventure. Did you have a travel agent help with preplanning? Ohana in Hawaii means extended family and I sure do appreciate you taking us along on your travels, like family, none of us are then forgotten or left behind!🥰Happy anniversary you two!!!
Hawaii is a very expensive place for residents like myself to Iive its the ohana & beauty that keeps us here. Also it people from out of the state/other countries buy up houses make it expensive for our own local adults to purchase homes.

We actually celebrated our 25th on Tahiti! But have been to the Big Island about 5 times, twice on the Cruise ship! The last time, there on the ship....we actually decided just to stay on, we were 20 of us, that day, and we got treated like royalty! The crew had their fire drills and lifeboat drills, and they gave the few of us, lunch in one of specialty restaurants, no extra charge, and a fixed menu... which i remember was so good, and super delish.....the chef came to visit, as did all the big wigs, On the ship..... and we had no idea that they would do this. Not having alot of people, no need to waste food , like having the buffet open. It was a very special memory. We love Hawaii, snd have gone back to all the islands and stayed for extented times. On Maui...the best place to buy food and gas for the car, is Costco! The Big Island, both times we have done it, the Captain, the evening they move from Hilo to Kona side....at the southern part, turned the ship, 360° multiple times so everyone, including crew could see the volcano flowing down into the sea! I have lived on the Big Island for 45 years and it's been wonderful, both my kids were born In Hilo and I now live in Ocean View, I'm 83 in a wheelchair.

Happy Anniversary! I’m enjoying your Hawaii vlogs. I’ve been to all the places you guys are showing 😊 Greece has some amazing black sand beaches too, the problem is that I had black sand trapped in my bathing suit that never left even after washing numerous times! Lol!
Those are Char Siu Chicken thighs... usually one would only know of Char Siu pork, but the marinade has been put on chicken for ages... usually contains star anise and five spice powder in the marinade along with red food coloring..
Maybe Ethan should try to get stationed on Oahu? Hickam is a beautiful base.
