- Myself singing lyrics to Smiles and Tears based on translation found at:

I tried my best to keep as close to the translation as possible. Yes, I have cut parts out, and stretched other parts. I'm also very aware there is a windows error "ping" in the later half of the song. I do not have my original files and since recording this, my voice has still not returned completely from when I lost it... and until I can re-record it... this will have to do.
I have always loved this song so very much, but I have always wanted to try singing it in English. I will always hold Mother 2 (Earthbound) close to my heart. This song seems very fitting for my life at the moment, even if my life has not been as adventurous and beautiful as Ness and company... I can still relate.

I had a friend that didn't live nearly half of his life, like most adults I know, but he gave me some precious memories, right here in my own heart.
R.I.P Mister Satoru Iwata. Truly a beautiful person in the gaming industry.

It's a masterpiece! As sad and happy it is, it makes everyone's heart to feel so warm. Doesn't it makes you want to go and cry to your mommy's arm and say, "I love you."
MOTHER has my favorite music.
MOTHER 2 has my favorite characters.
MOTHER 3 has my favorite story.
All 3 have my favorite villains.
All 3 have left an everlasting mark in my heart.
And in doing so, all 3 have become one of my most beloved, and deeply cherished games.
This is the first I've heard about the lyrics for Smiles and Tears. I was overjoyed to find out about this.

I have beaten Earthbound today...
This game... it's not a simple game.
You don't cry on the whole game,but at the very final,The War Against Giygas is OVER.
Then,Poo leaves first of all.
You feel a little microscopic bit of emotion in your heart.
Next,Jeff stays at the Saturn Valley to work with his father.
That emotion grows a lot,you come to think you might cry.
Then,Paula says that she wants to go home with you.
You are thinking then,there's a high chance of crying.
You read the letters at the gift boxes,you try do do not cry.
When you drop Paula at her house in Twoson,you begin to cry.
When the game ends,you cry A LOT.
This game is FANTASTIC.
It should be valorized like Chrono Trigger is,and valorized like FF7 is.
This game was EPIC.
Earthbound now is sharing room with Ocarina of Time,for most epic games that i have played.

I’m moving from high school into college next fall and this song never fails to make me cry. The lyrics capture perfectly the bittersweet feeling of looking back on your early life and realize you’ve fully lived your childhood, the sadness of having to leave behind close friends while also being joyful of all the truly meaningful experiences you’ve shared together, knowing that the sadness means your happiness was real, and the persevering love that will continue to connect everyone even once you’re apart. This song is absolutely beautiful.

I leave for college in 11 days. Listening to this song a week before college actually made me cry.
I finished this game, I actually have to say this is the most beautiful game I ever played. Love and friendship are magic, and a kid like Ness began his adventure with Paula, Jeff and Poo is totally heart warming. I love the Earthbound series so much and I pray for the Mother 4 will release on Nintendo Switch. Thanks you, Nintendo!!

I cant believe its been a decade since I found this song. I literally just remembered this song randomly, and just HAD to search for it again. Im so glad its still up!
In the entire decade that passed, Ive graduated fron high school, graduated from university, and now Im currently employed in my first job. To think that the me who listened to this 10 years ago was just a 12 year old kid who loved Earthbound! Life has been filled with ups and downs and a lot has happened in the past decade, but it still feels like the past 10 years happened in the blink of an eye.
While I definitely havent lived half my life yet, 10 years feels like an oddly short time to go from being a kid to an adult. Still, in the last decade, theres plenty of memories that were made, including this song, that is very dear to my heart.
So while I dont know if you will read this, thank you very much for this song.
I've been listening to this specific version of the song since I was 11, and I'm 24 now. EarthBound is still my favorite game of all time, and this song still makes me cry 13 years later. Thank you so much for making this, Maresuke. Your art has truly touched my heart, and will remain with me until I am dust beneath the Earth.
I'm finally back here again after 10 years and I still know all the lyrics by heart. What an oddly reassuring feeling to know I haven't fully forgotten the song that made such an impact on me as a kid. Thanks for keeping this up, your vocals still make me smile even after a decade.

I have a friend that passed away earlier this year. She was only 23 and had a rare heart problem that nobody realized until it was too late.
This song reminds me so much of her, even though she didn’t play Earthbound. She knew about it, as it was always one of my favorites, and I ranted about it quite a bit. I just read her obituary that her family released, and my name got mentioned in it. I found myself both laughing and crying simultaneously. And then it hit me...
I get this song now. I always loved it, but it has a deeper meaning for me. Smiles and Tears... odd how much they go together.

I still have not beaten the game and learned what happened, but I literally was crying at the end of this.
I cried to it while finishing the boss level its not easy as it seems it took me 5 tries to know what the weakness was worse part is you dont want to be a low level he gives you big hit attacks but you dont have to fight him it only makes him stronger but the ending was so beautiful and the cheering of all the other characters in the towns that brought tears in my eyes of joy I was to happy that it made me have faith in winning while listening to this song but when I saw the final boss as first I was creeped out cause it looks like your playing a bootleg game but your not I had nightmares from that for awhile until I beat the game I did not cause that monster creeps me out.

This is an absolutely beautiful version of the song. It's got a load of emotion behind it and brings tears to my eyes by the last line :) The artwork goes really well as well - and it's put together with great care and subtle but effective effects.
