It's better to be right than wrong! You're very nice to say I am right! I wish I was there in person to shake your hand and say "Thank You". How'd I do CM Punk? Do I need a Grammar Slam?
Carlo Vera Soliz We figuratively need this for the survival of the English language. Not literally because, well, we're still using English and it's still being used.
Punk, please save us. New print dictionaries and online dictionaries have taken to including a second definition of literally, which is basically...figuratively. I think Google's dictionary says literally can be "used for emphasis" and Mirriam-Webster now includes "virtually" as a synonym of literally. The fact that this is happening is basically society giving up on people ever speaking correctly. So again Punk, please save us. (Oh, and we wouldn't mind having AJ back on TV to entertain us either, if you're still feeling generous after rescuing the language).
Well... the English language tends to evolve, as time progress, just look at olde English. Things will be much different in the future... LITERALLY! xD
You should watch his "then, than" episode, and then tell me how your use "then" relates to time. Don't check my typo with arbitrary adverbs at the beginning of your sentence.
Some people use "literally" figuratively, to describe figurative things. Just like not everyone uses "figuratively" literally, but to describe obvious things. Words aren't meant to be used literally all the time, and the same goes for "literally". Otherwise, about half of the phrases would make no sense.
I come back to this series often, i first watched it when i was about 12 or 13 and this video particularly, i remember watching vividly. it taught me how to properly use literally, so thank you Mr punk.
Caitlin Tierney Well, what Punk meant is when someone is on fire, it doesn't mean literally because if I put fire on your body, it would burn. Frankly, I am not a Punk fan anymore but I agree with him.
Caitlin Tierney Well, that's what the comment was said. That's why Punk corrected him and say Cena can't be literally on fire because he would be burned to a crisp.
Yes I would like to see more. Here's a concept contribution from someone I heard recently: In regards to seeing 'souls' saved during an outreach, the word 'soles' was used instead.
OMG! I subscribed immediately after I finished watching this guy's rant...LITERALLY! It doesn't matter who he is. With his education, physique and the way he carries himself this man is just what people who don't care about grammar need in order to wake them the hell up and say how do to the world.
OMG THANK YOU!!! One of my friends just got in the habit of using 'literally' wrong. Which is one of my biggest pet peeves. Along with when people use the word 'legit'. Which is something I have come to accept that same friend will never stop doing.
Wow, this is amazing. I was literally listening to CM Punk's Nerdist podcast earlier today where he and Chris Hardwick were talking about doing this show.
***** It's not apathy, when you *deliberately choose* to say something in a wrong way. It's not a choice between the easy way, or the more difficult way, like people who are too lazy to spell check and things like that. If you know the difference, any time you use it incorrectly, you *choose* to say it in a wrong way, when you could have just as easily (I'd argue _more_ easily) said it correctly.
ZarlanTheGreen And why would one deliberately choose to say something the wrong way? Because it effectively illustrates their point. Like it or not, most people know what they mean when they say that. Therefore, the only reason for them *not* to say that is because it's grammatically correct. So they have a reason to say it, and a reason *not* to say it.However, said reason has no effect if the person saying it doesn't care about said reason. And what do we call it when someone doesn't care? That's right. *Apathy.*
This is hilarious. He's brilliant. Can we get more of these? Can he just get his own RUclips series? "This week, on Grammar Slam, with me, C.M. Punk...."
from merriam webster's dictionary Definition of LITERALLY 1 : in a literal sense or manner : actually (took the remark literally) (was literally insane) 2: in effect : virtually (will literally turn the world upside down to combat cruelty or injustice - Norman Cousins) It's in the dictionary, 'literally' can be used as a hyperbole. i.e., the word 'literally' can be used figuratively. Also, I'm pretty sure this video is about semantics and not grammar-- at least not literally about grammar.
CM Punk, you're awesome! I'm a huge grammar freak with both English and my native language (Finnish) so I totally understand your need to rant over bad grammar. I'm studying to become an English teacher and I actually might use your videos in class after I graduate. Have you done a video about "would of"? That drives me crazy every time I see it. I would love that video, please please please slam that one!
Merriam-Webster: 1 : in a literal sense or manner : actually (took the remark literally) (was literally insane) 2 : in effect : virtually (will literally turn the world upside down to combat cruelty or injustice - Norman Cousins)
According to google one of the definitions for literally is: "2. Used to acknowledge that something is not literally true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling." So literally can mean figuratively.
John Cena gets into Intensive care after the fire is put out. "Where am I"
"ICU"
"No you don't"
Literally has completely replaced seriously.
Yeah literally
+My Name Is Jeff
CM Punk is now literally about to kill you

How'd I do CM Punk? Do I need a Grammar Slam?
+Karen Catizone And it's also figuratively fantastic. It's fantastic in any forms.
Since I was 10 CM Punk has been my favorite WWE Superstar ever and he still is. He has great sense of humor.
I AM NOT LITERALLY A PIECE OF SHIT XD
Literally on fire. Man that was funny "Someone gotta put it out" LOL
+Mateus Parcianello CM Punk is going to find you and he's gonna literally smash that bottle into your head.
+Alex Udrescu Then, I will be literally bleeding.
Mateus Parcianello Then you will literally go to the hospital.
+Alex Udrescu And I will be figuratively fucked.
Mateus Parcianello I guess you will be literally fucked if a busty blonde treats you.
They should have made more episodes of this series. I've learned more watching this then I have at School.
CM Punk is figuratively the best in the world.
"As you see me stand here before you I am a human being, Literally." xD
Standing*

This is my premier annoyance in life. Great call!
Oh man, time to binge-watch these videos!
"Literally... Is just that! I don't even know how to explain it, the fuckin' definitition is literally!" I fell off my chair laughing XD
lol. Reminds me of Henry Rollins
Oh hell yeah... I so agree with that! lmao
Rollins... Did you see what Seth Rollins did last Monday Night RAW?
@@tander101Yeah he literally got jumped by Bronson Reed
A professional wrestler is teaching grammar.
The nerd age has begun.
I wish he'd do another, where he goes over, to, too, and two.
Affect and effect could be mentioned too
Carlo Vera Soliz We figuratively need this for the survival of the English language.
Not literally because, well, we're still using English and it's still being used.
Season 2 started on Monday
Cm punk tell John Cena that he sucks
He just did a week ago. After 5 damn years.
This series needs to be on tv
Punk, please save us.

It's a joke
Shaqstheman000
I actually might have had a point there
Peter Robert Wilson
I must've missclicked "view replies", pardon
I come back to this series often, i first watched it when i was about 12 or 13 and this video particularly, i remember watching vividly. it taught me how to properly use literally, so thank you Mr punk.
Where do we line up to spit on Cena?
When he is literally on fire in the ring
+Sean Avery Or when he's trying to look like he's from the Hood.
moret25 OR when he ruins the WWE and all wrestlers there.
😂 yes!
Please do more of these videos. They are brilliant!
I think pro wrestling is crap, yet here I am watching a pro wrestler and loving the guy.
It's a weird old world.
I don't like wrestling, But I like CM Punk.
I like UFC better but I like CM Punk lmao If that makes sense at all.
+Evan Hollis, well, now CM Punk just signed to join the UFC, so, you get to like both CM Punk and UFC a little more.
This is figuratively my favorite video ever. Their needs to be more of these. These are better then any of the other videos threw and threw.
He's doing really well, Punk. Not "doing really good."
His transformation into Wolverine is almost complete.
I'm just watching these to see that guy get hit with things.
Every time I hear "literally" being abused, I put this video on and it makes my day.
I am definitely guilty of this mistake. Mainly because it's easier to say literally than figuratively.
Is there another word for figuratively?????
virtually
Dumb Pagan
Oh, nice.
Caitlin Tierney
Well, what Punk meant is when someone is on fire, it doesn't mean literally because if I put fire on your body, it would burn.

Wow, u sure have a lot to say.
Yes I would like to see more. Here's a concept contribution from someone I heard recently: In regards to seeing 'souls' saved during an outreach, the word 'soles' was used instead.
Wow...who wants Punk as his English teacher?
OMG! I subscribed immediately after I finished watching this guy's rant...LITERALLY!
It doesn't matter who he is. With his education, physique and the way he carries himself this man is just what people who don't care about grammar need in order to wake them the hell up and say how do to the world.
This is literally hilarious!
I love punk when he done stuff like this
1:00 I Figuratively died hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!
These videos are amazing. Thank you, Matt and Pat.
I'd pay good money to see Cena literally on fire.
OMG THANK YOU!!! One of my friends just got in the habit of using 'literally' wrong. Which is one of my biggest pet peeves. Along with when people use the word 'legit'. Which is something I have come to accept that same friend will never stop doing.
... please do AFFECT and EFFECT :o)

Tommy Crisóstomo Inglish? XD
Make this man his own TV show IMMEDIATELY.
I suspect most people who make this "mistake" know the difference and just don't really care.
I think you may be giving them more credit than they deserve. :P
That would make it worse. They'd have to be even more stupid ...and dickish.
ZarlanTheGreen No, it would not make them more stupid, just apathetic.
***** It's not apathy, when you *deliberately choose* to say something in a wrong way.

And I know the difference. I watched the video.
I know right? The best grammar teachers always use improper grammar when teaching!!
Mike Peterson
The next video should be the difference between grammar and syntax.

CM Punk, you're awesome! I'm a huge grammar freak with both English and my native language (Finnish) so I totally understand your need to rant over bad grammar. According to google one of the definitions for literally is: "2. Used to acknowledge that something is not literally true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling."
So literally can mean figuratively.
